| Level 30 high-ranking cleric | 25 | Participates in the leadership meeting attended by level-30 high-ranking clerics, whose strength is described as comparable to jōnin. Reports the First Holy Knight Legion’s mastery of three formations. |

| Above level 80 | 166 | Explicitly stated to have broken past level 80. Ria considers him the only Church member besides herself able to withstand the next world’s rejection briefly and entrusts him with the Holy Grail. |
| Gold Cloth-equipped expedition commander | 166 167 | Receives one of the twelve Gold Cloths issued to the leading commanders. Despite his advanced strength and Invincibility skill, the new world’s repulsive force overwhelms him; the Holy Grail enables him to survive and opens safe passage for the legions. |
Background
Axel grew up among the war orphans cared for by Leah, also called Ria and Artoria. Before receiving Holy Light power, he and Rich gathered wild vegetables and mushrooms outside their border town, where nearby shinobi battles made searching for food dangerous. Watching Leah grow thinner made him wish he could grow up faster and share her responsibilities 2 4.
When Leah failed to return home on time, Axel comforted Xiao Cao and Xiao Shu and prepared to search for her with Rich. After hearing that she had been robbed and beaten, he and the other children wanted to retaliate, only to learn that Leah had already dealt with her attackers 4.
His service develops alongside the Church’s transformation from an orphan household’s religious movement into a political and military institution. He rises from leading young Knights to commanding a military district, multiple army groups, and ultimately all of the Church’s armed forces. His later responsibilities include establishing footholds in other worlds and representing the Church in negotiations with foreign leaders 5 17 67 142 166 186 299.
Appearance
- Early clothing: He leads the young Holy Knights’ first morning run in heavily patched but clean, presentable clothes 5.
- Knight armor: During Peace Village’s defense, he wears sleek, fully enclosed silver-white armor and carries a large shield 14.
- Mounted silhouette: His enormous white wolf stands over two meters tall, making the armored defenders immediately conspicuous to the approaching Sand shinobi 14.
- Military district commander: During negotiations with Earth and Fire, he has short blond hair and a clean, gentle face, wearing fitted silver-white armor and a crimson cape 67.
- Final Shinobi World battle: Wears Golden Exoskeleton Armor and a red cape while using God Descends 112.
- Marshal’s ceremonial appearance: Receives Night Raid with numerous golden medals on his chest, a resolute expression, and bright, piercing eyes 165.
- Later bearing: Dragon describes him as a young man with golden hair, a sunny expression, and a warm, approachable manner 186.
Personality
Axel’s determination centers on protecting his found family. During his class awakening, memories of the children laughing together and Leah’s gentle gaze restore his identity when he is nearly consumed by darkness. His willingness to die for Yui later shows how far that protective instinct extends; even after returning to life, he blames himself for failing to keep her safe 5 15 16.
He is unusually disciplined. He wakes his siblings at dawn for training, studies the Holy Light knowledge base, and maintains unwavering faith. Leah and Meli explicitly credit his rise to command to his strength, ability, and effort rather than his family connection to Leah 5 23.
His approach to civilians is patient and practical. Faced with villagers who fear his team, he rejects forcing entry and instead earns their trust through assistance. Against entrenched oppression, however, he argues that dialogue without equality cannot produce peace. This conviction becomes harsher during his dispute with Yahiko over the punishment of nobles implicated in the Evil Cult’s crimes 11 12 24 45.
Axel can respect disagreement without immediately rejecting friendship: he accepts Yahiko’s decision to follow Jiraiya’s ideals and shares a meal with him. Insults toward the Holy Light provoke a much sharper response, as shown when Hanzō’s accusations nearly turn negotiations into another confrontation 25 31.
His devotion can also make him neglect his personal life. Ria has to pull him away from unfinished work for a shopping trip, and he initially fails to recognize Mina’s attractiveness outside her clerical clothing. After her confession, he accepts their mutual affection without abandoning his commitment to the Church’s unfinished mission. Ria subsequently hopes he will learn to remember the people supporting him as well as the cause he serves 52 53.
As a senior commander, he combines courtesy with coercive resolve. He greets Ōnoki and Minato politely, uses evidence of atrocities to defend intervention, and proposes embassies to reduce international tensions. Against Kumogakure, he deliberately bombards surrounding mountains rather than civilians, but treats monitoring and missionary access as nonnegotiable terms 67 68 69 70.
Axel rejects peace imposed through an illusory escape from reality. In his confrontation with Madara and Obito, he argues that suffering must be understood, confronted, and resolved through practical effort, and condemns sacrificing other people for a supposedly peaceful world. Even when exhausted, he refuses Madara’s offer of submission 111 113.
His defense of faith distinguishes sincere questioning from hostile denunciation. When Dragon asks whether the Church’s deity contradicts equality, Axel welcomes the question, explains Holy Light as a guiding conviction, and explicitly rejects demands for unconditional belief. He maintains that deeds should earn trust rather than preaching alone 186.
He also recognizes limits to military administration. When the Pirate World’s instability grows, he chooses to support local adventurers and revolutionaries rather than occupy territory the Church lacks personnel to maintain. At the World Assembly, he advocates equal rights among races and practical inclusion, while defining the Church’s political aim as protecting relative fairness for the majority 211 215 240 241.
Abilities & Skills
Holy Knight Training
His power develops through faith, physical cultivation, meditation, and study 5 23.
- Leads the other young Holy Knights through organized physical training 5 7.
- Regularly studies the Holy Light knowledge base alongside his practical training 23.
- Initially possesses training methods rather than a full set of combat skills; further abilities depend on increasing levels and individual talent 5.
Shield of Courage
Axel and his two companions raise enormous magical shields to intercept incoming attacks 14.
- The shields rise over two meters tall and block most of the Sand shinobi’s kunai 14.
- Explosive attacks crack and eventually shatter them; they are not invulnerable 14.
Weapon Transformation and Mounted Charge
He uses Holy Knight Weapon Transformation: Holy Spear Mode and coordinates mounted charges with other Knights 14.
- Forms a triangular charge surrounded by a spear-point-shaped wave of light 14.
- Reinforces the formation with holy power to force a passage through Rasa’s wind-and-sand attack 14.
- Activates a group charge during the assault on Corona City, driving through defenders at the gateway 19.
- Can still suffer severe injuries when forcing his way through powerful enemy techniques 14.
- In his giant form, uses a Knight’s Lance and a similarly enlarged Holy Light Wolf King to charge the Ten-Tails 112.
- Uses a Z-Move to evade the Ten-Tails’ sweeping tails before striking its abdomen 112.
War Stomp
Axel orders his injured teammates into a back-to-back formation and commands their wolves to use War Stomp during the Sand attack 14.
- The wolves raise their forelegs and slam them into the ground, producing the attack’s shockwave 14.
- Knocks down nearby attackers and disrupts enemy techniques 14.
- Creates breathing room while the Knights are surrounded and their visibility is impaired by sand 14.
Rapid Movement
- Teleports to catch an elderly woman when she slips while carrying water 12.
- The passage does not name the technique or establish its range 12.
Legion Formations
As commander, Axel reports that the First Holy Knight Legion has mastered three specialized formations 25. He later uses additional unity formations to combine the power of large clerical forces 112.
| Formation | Function |
|---|---|
| Holy Spear Charge Formation | Attack 25 |
| Legion Defense Formation | Defense 25 |
| Eight Gates Golden Lock Formation | Trapping and killing enemies 25 |
| Holy Light Cleric Unity Formation | Links the holy power of more than twenty thousand clerics and channels it into Axel to strengthen his descending Holy Sword 112 |
| Holy Light Unity Formation | Combines the power of four army-group Giants of Light, restoring Axel’s diminished giant form and enabling their coordinated assault on the Ten-Tails 112 |
Giant Sword of Light
- Transforms his Knight Sword into an enormous lightsaber 111.
- Cuts Madara’s falling meteor into tiny fragments with repeated swings 111.
- Footage of this feat is later shown to Night Raid as evidence of the Church’s strength 135.
Oath, Holy Sword Judgment
- Throws his Knight Sword into the sky and summons an immense golden sword descending toward the enemy 111.
- Strengthens the sword through the Holy Light Cleric Unity Formation, breaking Madara’s Perfect Susanoo and forcing Madara and Obito to evade 112.
- Can detonate the embedded sword after impact 112.
- Its resulting golden flames attack reincarnated ninja at the soul, destroying many despite their apparent immortality 112.
God Descends
- Gathers the legion’s holy power and enlarges himself until he rivals the Ten-Tails in size; his mount enlarges with him 112.
- Allows him to wound the Ten-Tails through mounted lance attacks and fight it directly 112.
- Consumes substantial holy power. His form begins shrinking as his reserves fall, and the Ten-Tails’ regeneration makes the prolonged fight increasingly difficult 112.
- With Rich, Kumata, and Shishu’s Giants of Light joining the unity formation, his size is restored and the four overwhelm the beast, stripping away all but one of its tails 112.
Holy Shield and Invincibility
- Uses Holy Shield: Light Refraction to redirect a powerful red chakra beam back toward the Ten-Tails through a full 180-degree reversal 112.
- The reflection drives him backward before taking effect, and he notes afterward that a third of his holy power has been consumed 112.
- Calls for combined holy power and uses Holy Shield! Invincibility! to resist Madara’s Truth-Seeking Orbs. The opposing powers erode one another, but the clerics’ exhausted reserves make sustained defense untenable 113.
- Identifies the Truth-Seeking Orbs as wielding the power of rules, which he says is normally possessed by level-80 Holy Light Clerics 113.
- Activates the Holy Knight’s ultimate Invincibility skill before entering the Pirate World, but its repulsive force immediately shatters that protection 167.
Mental Protection
- Axel and the Holy Light Clerics avoid being trapped by Infinite Tsukuyomi because Holy Light protects their minds 114.
- This protection does not prevent Madara from threatening them with subsequent physical attacks; Ria intervenes against his meteor barrage 114.
Command and Church Establishment
- Organizes civilian evacuation into the church barrier and keeps inexperienced Knights out of the frontline battle 14.
- Coordinates artillery, encirclement, occupation duties, and the division of troops after victory 18 19.
- Directs Corona City’s registration effort and the distribution of identification cards 21.
- Helps activate a village church by channeling light into a stone tablet placed within its altar 13.
- Leads joint military-district operations, assembles legion commanders for briefings, and prioritizes rescuing war victims and punishing confirmed attacks on civilians 64.
- Uses reconnaissance, Sky Carriers, artillery, and coordinated army-group formations during large-scale campaigns 64 69 112.
- Directs cross-world base construction, including preparations for a shipyard near the Pirate World’s portal 172 173.
- Orders naval interception and surface-to-air missile targeting when Shiki’s flying island enters the East Blue 205.
- Coordinates Holy Church forces, the Adventurers’ Guild, and the Revolutionary Army under orders to minimize unrest and protect civilian lives and property 235.
Diplomacy and Public Advocacy
- Uses filmed atrocities and humanitarian relief work to answer accusations of aggression during negotiations with Earth and Fire 68.
- Proposes reciprocal embassies to encourage exchange and reduce conflict 68.
- Secures an alliance with Dragon by explaining the Church’s principles and offering concrete military support 186.
- Negotiates with Imu despite the threat of worldwide magnetic destabilization, securing acceptance of the Church’s terms against the adult Celestial Dragons 237.
- Addresses rulers and minority races at the World Assembly, explaining legal equality, public-service opportunities, and the Church’s interstellar development plans 240 241.
Equipment & Mount
- Silver-white armor — Fully enclosed armor worn during Peace Village’s defense 14.
- Shield — Used to block kunai at close range, separately from the larger magical Shield of Courage 14.
- Greatsword — Wielded during the assault on Corona City 19.
- Holy Light Wolf — A huge white mount used for travel and coordinated cavalry attacks 11 14 19.
- Church-activation stone tablet — Used jointly with his mission companions to establish the village church 13.
- Supporting artillery — Commands Holy Armored Ones operating Holy Light Rifles and Holy Light Armor-Piercing Cannons; these are unit weapons rather than his personal armament 18 19.
- Holy Light Wolf King — His mount during the confrontation with Madara and Obito; grows alongside him under God Descends 111 112.
- Knight Sword and Knight’s Lance — Used for his large-scale sword techniques and giant mounted combat 111 112.
- Golden Exoskeleton Armor — Worn with a red cape in the final Shinobi World campaign 112.
- Gold Cloth — One of twelve powerful Cloths distributed to the leading commanders before the next world-travel mission 166.
- Holy Grail — Entrusted to him by Ria to alter a law of the destination world. His wish to remain there opens safe passage for the Church; the Grail intercepts the world’s retaliatory lightning and loses part of its rim 166 167.
- Fleet and missile assets — Commands naval fleets and surface-to-air missile units in the Pirate World; these remain organizational resources rather than personal weapons 205.
Relationships
- Leah / Ria / Artoria — Older-sister figure, protector, and superior. He affectionately calls her “Boss,” misses her during his first mission away from home, and maintains formal respect for her in public. She resurrects him and praises his development into a capable commander. Their familial bond remains strong after his military rise: she embraces him on his return to New Rain Capital, entrusts him with the Holy Grail, and anxiously oversees his recovery after the dangerous world crossing 13 15 16 23 91 166 167.
- Yui — Younger-sister figure and mission teammate. Her healing supports him in battle; he sacrifices himself when she is taken hostage. After his revival, she clings to him in fear of losing him again 11 14 15 17.
- Rich — Found-family brother and fellow Holy Knight. They gather food together before awakening their powers and later share responsibility for military operations. Rich admires Axel’s strength and hopes to keep pace with him; they express a mutual wish to remain close to their family. Rich later assists him against the Ten-Tails and confirms his promotion to full marshal 4 5 18 30 71 112 142.
- Meli — Member of his found family and a supportive senior cleric. She recognizes his hard work and joins Leah in preparing a reunion dinner for him. Later, she helps Ria arrange private time for Axel and Mina and celebrates their relationship 7 23 25 52 53.
- Li Ming / Holy Light — Source of his class, training knowledge, and faith. Axel treats the Holy Light as wisdom and hope and fiercely objects to its being called an evil god. He later explains that Holy Light guides the Church’s direction while its followers must carry out the work themselves, and that sincere belief in its ideals matters more than unquestioning worship 5 23 31 32 111 186.
- Kumata and Shishu — Subordinates and close companions. Their teasing punctures his formal commander’s demeanor, and they socialize and perform public works together. Both join him as Giants of Light against the Ten-Tails. Kumata later rescues him after his first crossing into the Pirate World and works closely with him on base construction and military planning 23 24 26 112 167 173 205 211.
- Yahiko — Friend and ideological rival. Their shared orphan backgrounds help them connect, but disagreements over resistance, the ninja system, and punishment increasingly divide them 24 25 45 46.
- Konan and Nagato — Friends met through Yahiko. Konan tries to calm the later dispute between Axel and Yahiko, while Nagato interprets the Church’s harshness through its clerics’ commoner origins 25 45.
- Mina — Cleric, capable assistant, and romantic partner. Initially, she worries about his emotional well-being while he remains unaware of her affection. She confesses during their shopping outing, and he admits that he enjoys being with her and wants to continue forward together. Their subsequent exchanges show an established, affectionate relationship, though he remains awkward about public intimacy. He later thanks her for her support and promises to visit Lixing with her after their mission 46 52 53 64 67 91 205.
- Rasa — Enemy commander who uses Yui as a hostage to force Axel’s fatal sacrifice 15.
- Yi Yong — Younger found-family brother. Yi Yong admires Axel’s advancement, while Axel restrains his wish to embrace him during Night Raid’s formal reception in order to fulfill his ceremonial duties 142 165.
- Minato Namikaze — Diplomatic counterpart and later battlefield ally. Axel greets him courteously, helps secure Fire’s withdrawal from the war, and proposes exchanges between their countries. Minato later intervenes alongside Hashirama and Tobirama when Axel’s exhausted forces face Madara 67 68 113.
- Ōnoki — Negotiating counterpart. Despite challenging the Church’s motives, he accepts unconditional withdrawal after Axel presents evidence of wartime atrocities and agrees to the embassy proposal 67 68.
- Fourth Raikage A and Killer B — Defeated opponents confronted with evidence of Cloud shinobi atrocities. Axel uses their personal grief and the Church’s overwhelming strength to compel acceptance of monitoring and missionary access 69 70.
- Madara Uchiha and Obito — Military and ideological enemies. Axel rejects their Eye of the Moon Plan as escapism and fights their reincarnated army and the Ten-Tails, refusing Madara’s later demand for allegiance 111 112 113.
- Tatsumi and Night Raid — Cross-world allies. Tatsumi views Axel as an idol after seeing footage of his battle, and Axel personally welcomes the group to the Shinobi World. He later praises their work supporting Dragon’s Revolutionary Army 135 165 211.
- Dragon — Revolutionary ally. Their frank discussion of oppression, faith, and equality leads Axel to offer a combat unit to assist the Revolutionary Army. Dragon later participates in the Church-led counteroffensive and new world government 186 211 235 240.
- Sengoku, Garp, and Zephyr — Former Marine leaders whom Axel recruits to administer the Adventurers’ Guild. He frames their work as a way to replace the pirate era with a constructive adventurer era, and Sengoku accepts the guild presidency 215.
- Imu / Uranus — Final negotiating opponent in the Pirate World. Imu offers service to Holy Light in exchange for sparing the Celestial Dragons, but ultimately accepts Axel’s demand that their adult members die 237.
- Shirahoshi and Mansherry — Representatives of minority races whose concerns he addresses at the World Assembly. He promises equal legal protection and recognizes the Tontatta’s healing abilities as a valuable contribution to public service 240 241.
- Alleria, Sylvanas, and Vereesa Windrunner — High Elf allies accepted into the Church’s Auxiliary Forces. Axel reassures them that prejudice among their elders would not cause the Church to abandon ordinary High Elves to demonic attack, then welcomes their voluntary contribution 354.

- Channels more than twenty thousand clerics’ power to break Perfect Susanoo and detonates his Holy Sword, destroying reincarnated enemies through soul-burning flames. Sky Carrier bombardment eliminates most of the remaining undead army 112.
- Uses God Descends to engage the Ten-Tails and reflects its chakra beam, but begins losing ground as his reserves diminish and the beast regenerates 112.
- Combines forces with Rich, Kumata, and Shishu, restoring his giant form and overwhelming the Ten-Tails 112.
- Refuses the resurrected Madara’s offer of service. His exhausted army-group shield struggles against the Truth-Seeking Orbs, and the clerics scatter while Hashirama, Minato, and Tobirama intervene 113.
