| Name | Holy Light Clerics |
| Original Name | 圣职者 |
| Organization Type | Holy Light–empowered professionals serving as clergy, soldiers, healers, artisans, and administrators 9 17 25 26. |
| Affiliation | Church of the Holy Light, reorganized as the Holy Church 17. |
| Leader | Leah, also identified as Artoria; she leads the Church as bishop and signs its agreement with Amegakure as archbishop. Later chapters identify the Church’s leader as Pope Ria 29 32 134 299. |
| Source of Power | Li Ming, the Holy Light; individual strength develops through faith, determination, effort, knowledge, and righteous conviction. Betraying one’s honor causes the Holy Light to withdraw its power 3 8 318 321. |
| Base of Operations | Initially Huayu Town; the Church’s leadership later relocates to Corona City. Its later headquarters in the Shinobi World occupies a towering castle, while branches and military bases operate across other worlds 9 23 168 274 299. |
| Occupation/Role | Spreading the Holy Light, protecting civilians, providing public services, enforcing Holy Law, and defending Church territory. Later operations include interworld missions, social reform, epidemic relief, and campaigns against demons and undead 10 26 38 166 317 356 382. |
| Status | Active and expanding beyond the Land of Rain into multiple worlds and among nearly every civilized race in Azeroth 47 49 50 299 353. |
| First Appearance | The initial professional awakenings occur when Leah’s younger siblings receive Holy Light classes 5. |
Power Progression
These milestones track the clerics’ collective development; they do not indicate that every member advances simultaneously.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial class awakening | 5 6 | Leah’s siblings awaken as Holy Knights, Priests, Holy Armorers, and a Holy Cantor. Meli gains Healing Technique immediately upon awakening her Holy Light Seed, demonstrating unusually strong faith. |
| Above level 10 | 10 11 | About twenty qualified clerics form five four-person missionary teams. Level-ten paladins gain access to a secret realm where they can obtain mounts. |
| Broad advancement beyond level 10 | 13 | Nearly all seventy-odd clerics remaining in Huayu Town pass level ten during cathedral construction; several approach level twenty. Nearly two hundred new clerics also emerge. |
| Large level-20 combat force | 17 | After just over a year, Huayu Town and its surrounding villages support more than a thousand level-20 combat clerics. Total cleric membership grows from hundreds to several thousand. |
| Level-30 high-ranking clerics | 25 | After roughly a year and a half, the Church has more than sixty high-ranking clerics described as comparable to jōnin. Several Earth Holy Knights are approaching advancement. |
| High-ranking priest with resurrection | 37 | Aili reveals that she has secretly advanced to high-ranking priest and uses Basic Resurrection to restore a dead infant. |
| Regional armies: minimum level 20 | 47 | Every military region permanently stations more than ten thousand clerics, with the lowest-ranked at level twenty. The elite First Army averages level thirty, excluding squad leaders and regiment commanders. |
| Level-40 personnel in competing legions | 88 | Military-district legions compare their numbers of tier-40 clerics; Jia’er’s legion has only ten fewer than the district’s First Legion. |
| Level-50 Regiment Commanders and Chief Judges | 134 | Clerics advance one rank every ten levels. Regiment Commanders and Chief Judges are level fifty, with Legion Commanders and Judgment Chiefs above them. |
| Gold Cloth–assisted level 70 | 166 | Twelve Legion Commanders, already infinitely close to level seventy, receive Gold Cloths that bring them to level seventy, equivalent to newly entering the Six Paths level. They also gain their Cloths’ distinctive skills. |
| Pope’s projected advancement from level 89 to 91 | 166 | Ria receives a separate Gold Cloth intended to help her cross from level eighty-nine to ninety-one and experience Demigod laws; the chapter describes the equipment’s purpose rather than confirming completion of the advancement. |
| Full upper-rank scale explained | 317 | Rich identifies level fifty as Transcendent, sixty as Legendary, seventy as Epic, eighty as the beginning of the Demigod realm, ninety as the path to godhood, and one hundred as “mortal god” strength. These are system thresholds, not a claim that all clerics have reached them. |
| Regular legion entry: minimum level 30 | 323 | Even the weakest regular legion requires recruits to reach at least level thirty. Newly empowered Stormwind soldiers remain below this standard despite substantial gains in strength and speed. |
| Archimonde campaign force: minimum level 40 | 378 | The clerics facing Archimonde are all at least level forty. Improved armor and defensive formations preserve their lives despite serious injuries and the destruction of their combined Giants of Light. |
Membership and Professions
“Holy Light Cleric” is an umbrella designation, not a synonym for Priest. By the Church’s international expansion, other countries recognize clerics as a profession distinct from ninja 25 47.
The mature system distinguishes Priests’ spellcasting and healing, Holy Knights’ close combat and physical cultivation, Holy Armored Ones’ machinery and natural sciences, and Holy Cantors’ arts and matters of the soul. Azeroth’s inhabitants initially mistake the visiting clerics collectively for priests, but the Church explicitly explains these professional differences 305 316.
| Profession | Principal Duties | Documented Members |
|---|---|---|
| Holy Knights / Paladins | Front-line combat, mounted operations, formation warfare, patrols, and civilian protection 9 11 22 25. | A-Ping and Rich lead knight forces 28. |
| Priests | Healing, purification, potion-making, Truth Spells, and judicial work 10 24 25 30. | Meli, Yui, Mina, Jimu, Aili, Reilly, and Will 12 24 26 28 37 49. |
| Holy Armored Ones / Holy Armorers | Enchantment, weapons development, construction, industrial research, and civilian machinery 9 23 25. | Iron Mountain heads their research reports and commands the Armored Legion 25 28. |
| Holy Cantors | Group buffs, musical illusions, sonic attacks, broadcasting, and cultural work 23 25. | Shui Sha and Orville 23 25. |
Recruitment and Training
- Holy Light Seeds: Seeds provide the initial connection to the Holy Light. The profession a recipient awakens depends on their deepest desires, including protective, priestly, or noncombat callings 4 5.
- Personal effort: Belief provides a “seed of hope,” but developing its power requires the recipient’s own determination and work 3 8.
- Church-based training: Magic arrays and church facilities accelerate cultivation of holy power 8 10.
- Knowledge access: Li Ming organizes the Holy Light Knowledge Base into tiers suited to clerics at different stages and simplifies his understood laws for believers to learn 32.
- Commoner recruitment: Schools provide meals and offer children the prospect of becoming clerics. Improved living conditions also bring more adults into the Church 17.
- Admission across class boundaries: Will insists that the noblewoman Fengsha receive a chance to prove herself, despite his teammates’ initial prejudice against nobles. Her acceptance remains conditional on enduring the Church’s trials 50.
- Power accompanied by obligations: Before giving Tatsumi, Yas, and Sayo Holy Light Seeds, Yi Yong teaches them to bring hope, correct their shortcomings, and protect others. Fushu subsequently gives them mechanical backpacks and teaches them to activate their armor, while Yi Yong emphasizes the responsibility it represents 120 121.
- Universal potential: Everyone has the potential to become a cleric regardless of physical talent. Strength is tied to conviction, while later instruction emphasizes willpower, morality, and knowledge rather than exceptional physical aptitude 169 214 321.
- Moral dependence: A righteous heart and fidelity to one’s honor are necessary to retain Holy Light power. Rich states that a cleric who betrays that honor becomes an ordinary person, retaining knowledge but losing the Light 318.
- Instruction before combat: Stormwind’s volunteer training begins with studying the Holy Light’s teachings rather than physical drills or prayer. Recruits must sincerely understand and accept the principles and may leave if they cannot agree with them 321.
- Daily physical practice: Yi Yong’s unit conducts early-morning training in the mountains, maintaining orderly spacing, coordinated movements, and structured breathing 120.
- Cross-racial eligibility: The Church’s response is not limited to humans. Any intelligent being who sincerely believes in the Holy Light can receive a response, and the Church establishes a presence among nearly every civilized race in Azeroth 344 353.
Military Organization
| Formation / Office | Documented Organization and Role |
|---|---|
| Early missionary team | Qualified clerics initially depart in four-person teams to establish churches and serve nearby villages 10 11. |
| Standard later squad | Generally ten members: four Knights, two Priests, three Armored Warriors, and one Holy Cantor. This combined-profession arrangement provides healing, crowd control, protection, and coordinated attacks 58. |
| Regiment leadership | Regiment Commanders are level-fifty clerics. Will and Yi Yong are explicitly addressed by this title during operations in the Imperial world 134 140 148. |
| Legion leadership | Legion Commanders stand above Regiment Commanders. Twelve commanders receive Gold Cloths for the next world-travel mission 134 166. |
| Military districts | Only the top ten legions in each district receive names. Competition among legions is described as fair and open, with defeated competitors accepting the result 88. |
| Army groups and marshal | Later interworld deployments include Marshal Axel, Rich of the First Army Group, and four top army groups. Other forces include the Third Army Group 173 299. |
| Judgment hierarchy | Level-fifty Chief Judges serve beneath Judgment Chiefs. The Judgment Hall’s strongest leaders accompany Ria’s Azeroth expedition 134 299. |
| Auxiliary forces | Auxiliary personnel support Church operations, with some described as capable of matching an entire cleric army group alone. Auxiliary squads later receive missions and intelligence for clearing undead while the strongest Church forces address the Old Gods’ leaking power 134 365. |
Additional documented clerics include Tatsumi, Yas, Sayo, Fushu, Iron Hammer, Le’er, Locke, Hexia, and Anduin Lothar. Night Raid’s members collectively receive Holy Light Seeds and become clerics 121 134 148 166 310 323 332 344.
Background and History
Formation in Huayu Town
Leah’s union with the Holy Light establishes the basis for a wider community of empowered believers. She gives Holy Light Seeds to her younger siblings, who awaken professions and begin training. Meli subsequently becomes a Priest, and her clinic becomes the starting point for spreading the faith 3 4 5 6.
The completed church houses a luminous portion of Li Ming within its central cross. Healing, worship, and community assistance attract townspeople. Within two months, the Church shelters homeless children in its school, employs impoverished refugees, and fields more than fifty Holy Knights, twenty Priests, thirteen Holy Armored Ones, and five Holy Cantors 8 9.
Missionary Expansion
An attack by Xiliu’s shinobi squad demonstrates both the clerics’ defensive coordination and their vulnerability to stronger enemies. After the attack, Leah orders qualified clerics to form four-person teams, establish churches in nearby villages, and prepare the Huayu church’s upgrade 9 10.
Five teams depart with mounts and Holy Light Keystones. A-Ping’s group earns villagers’ trust through patient assistance, healing, repairs, and protection rather than forcing entry or demanding belief. Other squads defeat bandits and thugs; Rich’s squad deposes an oppressive lord. Their new churches establish communications with Huayu Town and recruit more than twenty Junior Holy Light Clerics 11 12 13.
Political Reorganization and Territorial Expansion
Leah concludes that missionary work alone cannot transform the country. She recalls the clerics and reorganizes the Church of the Holy Light into the Holy Church, combining religious leadership with secular government. Clerics suppress hostile factions, establish schools, develop industry, and introduce public-welfare measures 17.
The growing combat force defeats Tetsui’s five thousand warriors at Foxling Wetland using Holy Light Rifles. A-Ping then advances toward Corona City, where the Church later relocates its leadership. Clerics install Magic Towers and conduct public trials of former nobles, using Truth Spells to assist testimony and investigation 18 19 23 24.
Conflict and Cooperation with Amegakure
When Hanzō marches on Corona City, the clerics mobilize its defenders. Barriers, artillery, machine guns, knight formations, purification, and healing defeat the Rain ninja’s principal tactics. Leah nevertheless seeks a settlement because eliminating Hanzō could draw the great nations into the conflict 28 29 30.
After forcing an end to the battle, Leah proposes cooperation: the Church will liberate half the Land of Rain over two years while Hanzō occupies the Daimyo’s attention, and Amegakure will receive twice its existing national aid. Leah and Hanzō sign their agreement under the Holy Light’s witness 31 32.
Rat-Plague Relief and International Missions
Clerics deploy troops, airships, and supplies when a rat infestation drives refugees from the eastern region. At Fuyu City, they overcome defenses maintained by nobles who have massacred fleeing civilians, then search for survivors. Oli’s squad later makes a fatal stand against mutated rats rather than abandon the people it protects 37 40.
The investigation uncovers an Evil God altar and the remains of sacrificed children. Judgment Hall clerics pursue the implicated nobles; A-Ping later explains that the ritual killed more than a thousand children and caused the rat plague 42 44.
As the Holy Church gains nearly every city in the Land of Rain, clerics remain to rebuild devastated settlements. Overseas expansion follows through the Dawn Merchant Association and new churches. In the Land of Wind, Will’s team rejects a lavish church, sells its gold statue to fund aid, and establishes itself among impoverished residents 47 49.
Later clashes establish the effectiveness of ten-person cleric squads against conventional ninja teams. Their healing, coordinated formations, resistance to comparable-level genjutsu, and Malice Perception force shinobi villages to assign additional personnel to missions involving cleric opponents 58.
As the Church approaches its final unification campaign, Ria explains that its usual method combines popular support with military deterrence to avoid fighting. The decision to depart from peaceful methods follows the loss of three cleric squads and the enemy’s growing awareness of the Church’s approach 107.
Imperial-World Missions and Longxi City
Yi Yong’s unit wins the trust of a village through practical assistance and disciplined conduct. After restraining and killing a Thundercloud Lionhorn Beast during morning training, Yi Yong recognizes the courage of Tatsumi and his companions and offers them Holy Light Seeds. Their subsequent awakening, new armor, and the clerics’ work alongside villagers help persuade the village chief to trust the unit 120 121.
In Longxi City, Will confronts the Path of Peace’s deputy leader and exposes the inadequacy of its supposed miracle. Holy Knights and Priests perform the Holy Light Descent Ritual under Aili’s priestly leadership. When the rival faction attempts murder, the Knights shield bystanders and Will kills the Four Rakshasa Demons and their patron 137 138.
The clerics arrest malicious missionaries and discover the imprisoned founder of the rival church. Will recognizes the founder’s sincere concern for the people and welcomes him as a prospective cleric. Later, Le’er is shown serving in the legion and taking comfort in the citizens’ return from religious frenzy to ordinary life 138 148.
Rich commands the cleric force outside Longxi against Budo’s hundred-thousand-strong Imperial army. Holy Armored Ones bombard the enemy from the city walls, while Rich shields his legion from artillery and leads the Knights’ countercharge. Budo’s strongest attack fails against Rich’s Invincible Holy Shield, and Budo is killed in the rout 149.
After taking the Imperial Capital, the clerics use portable sleeping pods in the streets rather than occupy residents’ homes. The Church returns wealth seized by nobles, lowers taxes, aids refugees and homeless children, and suppresses criminal gangs. Trials of 284 nobles find only two with relatively clean hands 159.
Interworld Expansion
Night Raid’s members become Holy Light Clerics when Ria plants Holy Light Seeds in them. Li Ming modifies their Imperial Arms to operate with Holy Power, preserving their distinctive qualities and strengthening some abilities. He also supplies thirteen Gold Cloths and a Holy Grail for the next world-travel mission; Ria distributes twelve Cloths to Legion Commanders and entrusts the Grail to Axel 166.
In the next world, Kumata’s force surveys a settlement whose residents survive by scavenging garbage. He orders relief and cleanup while reserving the area around the Portal for a forward military base. Holy Armored Ones are to construct the base and deploy satellites for reconnaissance 168.
The Church’s forces later assert authority over the East Blue and confront armed pirates. Cooperation with Dragon’s former Revolutionary Army also supports commoner movements in which new clerics arise independently through faith, particularly in smaller villages 201 216.
After Li Ming absorbs the Black Bullet world’s laws, the Church gains access to passages leading to many smaller worlds. Ria sends surplus clerics and eager recruits to establish branches. She then leads an elite expedition to investigate another form of holy light, accompanied by Marshal Axel, Rich, four top army groups, Judgment Hall leaders, and numerous high-ranking clerics 299.
Arrival and Reform in Azeroth
The expedition finds a holy light that shares an apparent source with its own but emphasizes individual virtues rather than the Holy Church’s collective social mission. The clerics regard many of those virtues as already required by their service to the greater good 299 301.
Rich’s thousand-strong contingent separates to investigate different settlements, with one hundred clerics approaching Stormwind openly. Their first contact with the public centers on healing: dozens of Priests bathe the crowd at the city gate in restorative light. Rich refuses a noble family’s attempt to secure them as retainers and rejects the local agreement that gives nobles priority in priestly service 305 306.
Anduin Lothar witnesses their warmth toward ordinary citizens and children, then escorts Rich and his deputy An Ting to King Llane. Rich leaves most of his force behind to continue treating the public. Bishop Aures is astonished by the visitors’ Holy Power, with Rich’s power exceeding even that of the Naaru Aures has sensed 307 308.
Church offices spread through the kingdom. In Moonbrook, clerics provide inexpensive treatment, protect farms, introduce labor-saving machinery, and discuss food security with local officials. Their farmers’ associations provoke nobles to impose arbitrary taxes; clerics drive away tax collectors and defeat the soldiers sent to expel them 310 312.
During an epidemic at Lakeshire, clerics organize treatment, quarantine, and Holy Power cleansing. Their conduct helps convince Llane and Lothar of the Church’s commitment to ordinary people. Rich explains its vision of universal education and commoner participation in government, and Llane agrees to cooperate despite the possibility of condemnation by other human kingdoms 316 317 318.
At Llane’s invitation, clerics train Stormwind volunteers in the Holy Light’s principles and powers. Lothar himself acquires Holy Power. Tens of thousands of clerics later enter Stormwind, where commoners welcome them and nobles fear the loss of their inherited authority 321 323 332.
Clerics also assist after Sasuke defeats Medivh, promising treatment to the cursed Khadgar and bringing out the Holy Grail. Sasuke places the eye containing Sargeras into it; the demon’s apparent escape ultimately delivers him to Li Ming, who devours him 337.
Stormwind subsequently abolishes nobility, institutes rule by law, and expands education through Holy Light Schools. Its local Church of the Holy Light merges with the Holy Church, while the wider Azerothian Holy Light Grand Cathedral remains institutionally distinct and is initially unaware of the Holy Church’s expansion across the Seven Kingdoms 344 345 347.
Undead Relief and Demon Campaigns
The Church’s presence spreads beyond humanity to nearly every civilized race in Azeroth. Its mobilization includes forces and equipment that astonish the High Elves, Orcs, Gnomes, Dwarves, and other residents of its settlements 353.
During the evacuation of undead-threatened communities, ten clerics hold a church entrance that hundreds of local defenders had struggled to protect. Refugee camps provide schooling for children, paid work for adults, and food and lodging. Auxiliary squads subsequently receive undead-clearing assignments while the strongest Church forces concentrate on power leaking from the Old Gods’ loosened seals 356 360 365.
A cleric legion resists Archimonde’s Evil Spirit Curse with coordinated fire and a Super Purifying Holy Light Bullet, then forms three Giants of Light through a Combined Attack. Archimonde destroys the giants and gravely injures many clerics, but their improved armor prevents the demons from killing the fallen soldiers and even withstands his direct strike against one cleric 378.
Another legion’s overwhelming defeat of demon forces brings it into contact with seven Naaru. Axel escorts them through a Void Gate to the Holy City, where Ria introduces them to Li Ming. After Li Ming transforms them into golden Light Spirits, he assures them that the Holy Church will welcome and care for their followers 382.
Ideals and Conduct
- Hope rather than tribute: Cleric teachings present the Holy Light as hope for a better life, not a power that demands souls in payment 3 8.
- Service as legitimacy: Leah explicitly ties the organization’s strength to improving ordinary people’s lives and earning their trust 26.
- No punishment for unbelief: A-Ping states that the Church has neither killed nor expelled people for refusing to believe in the Holy Light 25.
- Protection of children: Clerics treat children as the future of their faith. Oli’s squad protects an orphaned baby, while Will intervenes against a samurai attacking a child accused of stealing water 40 49.
- Severe punishment for proven abuse: Clerics enforce Holy Law harshly against nobles who dehumanize civilians, particularly those responsible for killing children 24 38.
- Everyday equality: Knights gently redirect children who obstruct patrols, and a cleric declines an offered place at the front of a ticket queue 22 44.
- Practical religious buildings: Branch churches generally resemble local homes and prioritize necessary facilities. Renovations are adjusted to local living standards rather than imposed as displays of luxury 49.
- Rational belief rather than fanaticism: Clerics want people to understand and embrace the Holy Light’s ideals, not become ecstatic worshippers seeking escape from hardship. Their reaction to Longxi’s religious frenzy is unease rather than satisfaction 138 148.
- Actions before preaching: The Church first delivers practical results, then explains its teachings to people who wish to learn. It rejects coercion, empty promises, and claims that the Holy Light is an omnipotent solution to every problem 214.
- Deterrence before war: The usual policy is to build popular support and use military superiority to subdue opposition without fighting, minimizing war’s harm where possible 107.
- Respect for civilians’ homes: Clerics occupying the Imperial Capital sleep in portable pods outdoors while barracks are built rather than disturb residents 159.
- Nobility through deeds: Rich defines personal nobility through conduct and devotion, not surnames, ancestry, or inherited rank 306 308.
- Education and popular authority: The Church seeks to educate commoners so that they can participate equally in government and technological development. Its teachings locate political authority and social glory in the labor and support of ordinary people 318 321.
- Mutual support, not patronage: Locke tells Moonbrook’s mayor that clerics depend on the townspeople’s support and should not be treated as untouchable superiors 310.
- Peace across racial boundaries: Clerics are willing to negotiate with other races seeking peace if war criminals are surrendered. Their mission is not exclusively human; any race yearning for a better future may become their companion 333 335.
Abilities and Skills
Holy Power and Church Support
Holy power supports the clerics’ combat skills and their specialized professional abilities 9 25.
- Basic churches accelerate training, detect hostile intent, provide Holy Light Barrier protection, and strengthen clerics within their domain 10.
- The level-two cathedral expands the basic church’s range a hundredfold and doubles training acceleration 10.
- Collective construction and rituals require clerics to expend holy power, sometimes repeatedly in one day 10.
- Holy Light equipment requires holy power to operate, preventing its straightforward sale to ordinary users 9.
- Clerics can burn and erupt their Holy Power rather than use the inner cosmos associated with the Cloths’ original system 165.
- Later branches connect with headquarters, support teleportation and summoning, and serve as central energy sources for cities under Holy Light Protection 345.
- Power depends on conviction and honorable conduct; abandoning that honor results in the loss of holy power 214 318.
Healing, Purification, and Resurrection
Priests provide routine medical care and battlefield recovery 9 12 30.
- Healing Technique: Restores sick and injured patients; coordinated healing allows wounded knights to return to fighting 9 12.
- Greater Purification: Priests collectively disperse Ibuse’s poisonous smoke 30.
- Potion-making: Developed products include energy, antidote, strength, agility-enhancement, stamina, and life potions 25.
- Basic Resurrection: Aili restores a dead infant after revealing her high-ranking priest advancement 37.
- Limits: Ordinary Priests cannot perform the sustained cleansing Leah uses against Chiyo’s poison. Antidote potions only suppress Ibuse’s poison, requiring additional treatment 16 30.
- Mass healing: Dozens of Priests collectively emit white light across Stormwind’s city gate, easing the ailments of the assembled public 305.
- Epidemic management: Clerics combine treatment with masks, severity-based patient sorting, quarantine, and Holy Power cleansing before moving recovered patients to safe areas 317.
- Dark-power treatment: Ria promises Meli’s help for Kurome’s bodily damage, provided the darkness has not harmed her mind, and warns Night Raid against dark power 166.
- Emergency recovery: The Church can restore critically injured clerics so long as they remain alive, making survival-focused armor a major part of its medical and military strategy 378.
Knight Formation Warfare
Holy Knights combine mounted mobility with coordinated legion formations 11 25.
- Holy Spear Charge Formation: Offensive formation 25.
- Legion Defense Formation: Defensive formation 25.
- Eight Gates Golden Lock Formation: Traps and kills enemies 25.
- Knights split and encircle Rain ninja with a rotating formation that attacks using blades of light 30.
- Level-ten paladins can seek battle companions in the Holy Light’s mount realm 11.
- Shields of Courage: Golden shields protect bystanders during Will’s confrontation with the Path of Peace and form a rectangular defensive enclosure around children during travel 137 278.
- War Stomp: Used during an arrowhead charge to crush and injure Imperial fighters outside Longxi 149.
- Holy Light Protection: Rich shields his entire legion from Imperial artillery 149.
- Invincible Holy Shield: Rich blocks Budo’s Thunder God’s Wrath 149.
- Oath aura: Will immobilizes the Four Rakshasa Demons and their patron before killing them 138.
Enchantment and Engineering
Holy Armored Ones enhance equipment made by ordinary craftspeople and develop technology from the Holy Light Knowledge Base 9 17.
- Research divides into military and civilian branches as membership grows 25.
- Military work includes improved armor and weapons, cannons, machine guns, siege tanks, and airships 25.
- Civilian designs include rapid seeders, fertilizer, waterwheels, rails, and Holy Power Railcars 25.
- Large-scale production depends on supporting factories, manpower, and materials 25 26.
- Later work encompasses natural sciences, machinery, and humanity’s expansion beyond individual worlds 316.
- Holy Armored Ones construct forward bases and deploy satellites to survey unfamiliar worlds 168.
- Battlefield machines can integrate with clerics’ greatshields, turning a squad formation into a small weapons-equipped bunker 325.
- Holy Armored Ones raise Holy Light Statues from magic circles to support volunteer instruction 321.
Cantor Music and Communications
Holy Cantors support both public life and combat through music and sound 25 28.
- Apply group buffs, create musical illusions, and launch sonic attacks 25.
- Amplify warnings and broadcast announcements 9 23.
- Provide soothing music and artistic works 25 28.
- The profession is uncommon and particularly dependent on talent 25.
- During coordinated travel, four airborne performers summon musical instruments and project waves that help give the formation three-dimensional awareness over several thousand meters 278.
Investigation and Justice
Clerics administer courts and investigate crimes under Holy Law 24 38 44.
- Truth Spell: Helps obtain information from prisoners and verify testimony 10 24.
- Evil Detection: Distinguishes a neutral lord such as Bob from rulers judged evil 17.
- Judgment Hall: Organizes public trials and investigates nobles implicated in the eastern sacrifices 24 44.
- Holy Light Judgment: Priests use descending light to execute condemned offenders 24.
- Security screening: Stormwind branch guards apply Evil Detection to visitors, including powerful guests such as the Red Dragon Queen, as a safeguard against demons 344.
- Authorized force: Article 125 of Holy Law’s criminal code permits clerics to use force against resisting criminals until they lose the ability to resist. In the Imperial Capital, clerics combine severe beatings with priestly healing when subduing a child-trafficking gang boss 159.
- Judgment by conduct: Imperial Capital trials distinguish the two relatively innocent nobles from the guilty majority, rather than treating noble status alone as proof of criminality 159.
Squad Coordination and Sensory Abilities
- Genjutsu resistance: Clerics are almost immune to genjutsu from opponents of the same level, greatly reducing a standard ninja advantage 58.
- Malice Perception: Detects hostile intent and undermines conventional ambush tactics 58.
- Chains of Light: Yi Yong’s unit restrains a Thundercloud Lionhorn Beast with golden chains before killing it with machine-gun fire 120.
- Lightness Spell: Priests reduce the apparent weight of protected travelers during a coordinated mounted journey 278.
- Shared Perception: Golden connections link Knights and their Holy Light Wolves as part of the formation’s shared sensory system 278.
- Holy Power Link: A frequently used coordination skill employed alongside shared perception and other group enhancements 278.
- Strength-enhancing halo: A Priest’s battlefield halo triples the squad members’ strength, while another Priest supplies a translucent protective barrier 325.
- Combined Attack: A legion facing Archimonde forms three enormous Giants of Light. Their radiance burns skeletal wraiths, and their Lightsabers cut through undead, although sustained curse and fel-meteor attacks eventually destroy the forms 378.
Holy Light Descent Ritual
The Holy Light Descent Ritual combines mounted Holy Knights, raised Knight Swords, and a procession of Priests. Aili leads the priestly group through the Knights’ ranks toward Longxi’s central square 137.
The ritual fills the city with holy radiance, luminous wings, and gentle rain that brings peace and comfort. Although it wins public recognition of the Holy Light, the clerics remain wary when the crowd’s response turns into irrational religious fervor 137 138.
Equipment and Infrastructure

- Airships and rail transport — Support relief deployments and travel within Church territory 37 44.
- Cathedrals — The level-two church is completed in Huayu Town; Corona City later houses a completed Level Three Holy Church 13 28.

- Optical Computers — Distribute mission intelligence to auxiliary forces; the devices used for the undead-clearing assignments have received Light Spirit blessings 365.
- Advanced Holy Light Armor — Later generations use active titanium alloy and integrated Defensive Formations. Archimonde’s troops cannot pierce the fallen clerics’ armor, and his own strike cracks a visor without killing its wearer. Heavy concussive force can still gravely injure the body beneath 378.
- Super Purifying Holy Light Bullets — Fired over friendly troops to disperse Archimonde’s Evil Spirit Curse 378.
- Branch command centers — Connect to headquarters and provide teleportation, summoning, and citywide Holy Light Protection energy support 345.

- Rich instructs clerics to treat the spirits as fallen comrades, not curiosities, and arranges for those separated from their units to return home 42.
- Corona City holds a solemn homecoming in which bereaved families receive the Light Spirits of their relatives 44.
- This rebirth is not a complete reversal of death: Li Ming explicitly states that his Holy Light cannot yet fully reverse the laws of life and death 41.
- Light Spirits can turn their bodies into light particles, summon the Divine Kingdom’s gates, and travel anywhere within Church territory. Provoking one may bring a whole group to its aid 78.
- Their Divine Arts exceed those of most clerics; only a handful of the very best clerics can compare. They are nevertheless generally gentle toward beings that are not evil 78.
- Light Spirits bless Optical Computers used to distribute mission information to auxiliary forces 365.
- Not all later Light Spirits originate as fallen clerics: Li Ming transforms seven Naaru into golden Light Spirits, granting them mobile bodies and welcoming them into his Divine Kingdom 382.
Relationships
- Li Ming / Holy Light — Empowers the clerics, provides knowledge, develops their mount realm, and grants fallen members new lives as Light Spirits 3 11 32 41. Later supplies Gold Cloths, modifies Night Raid’s weapons, and supports interworld expansion. The clerics’ power comes directly from him rather than through Naaru guidance 166 299 316.
- Ordinary civilians — The principal source of recruits and support. Healing, education, reconstruction, and refugee assistance earn the clerics widespread loyalty 17 26 28 47. Their work in Azeroth similarly builds trust through farming assistance, epidemic relief, and protection against abusive nobles 310 312 317.
- Dawn Merchant Association — Supplies an economic and intelligence network; clerics protect its operations, while its branches support Church expansion 26 47.
- Hanzō and Amegakure — Initially enemies; become treaty partners after the failed assault on Corona City 30 31 32.
- Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato — Witness the clerics’ service and sacrifice. Yahiko admires their courage but disputes their reliance on force as a path to peace 24 25 40 42.
- Regional nobility — Frequent opponents during territorial expansion and criminal investigations, though individual nobles are judged differently and sincere applicants are offered a chance to join 17 38 44 50. This conflict continues in the Imperial world and Azeroth, where clerics challenge inherited privilege and judge nobles by their conduct 159 306 312 332.
- Land of Wind Daimyo — Invites churches into his country, but Will’s team finds that his luxurious religious patronage conceals severe poverty among commoners 47 48 49.
- Sunagakure — Hostile to the Church’s merchant association, contrasting with the Land of Wind Daimyo’s welcome 47.
- Tatsumi, Yas, and Sayo — Recruited and mentored by Yi Yong and Fushu after demonstrating courage and a desire to bring hope to others 120 121.
- Path of Peace / Path of Tranquility — Its corrupt deputy leader and malicious missionaries oppose the Holy Church in Longxi. Its imprisoned founder is treated differently because of his sincere compassion and later serves the Holy Light as Le’er 137 138 148.
- Budo and the Imperial army — Military opponents defeated outside Longxi by Rich’s legion and the Church’s artillery 149.
- Night Raid — Witnesses the Church’s restraint toward civilians and severity toward criminals, then joins the clerics through Holy Light Seeds. Their Imperial Arms are adapted to their new powers 159 166.
- Dragon’s former Revolutionary Army — Cooperates with Church personnel in supporting commoner uprisings and newly emerging clerics 216.
- King Llane and Anduin Lothar — Initially cautious about the Church’s intentions, then become partners after witnessing its service and hearing Rich’s reform program. Lothar acquires Holy Power, and Llane provides barracks for arriving cleric forces 307 318 323 332.
- Azeroth’s Holy Light Grand Cathedral — Shares a related form of holy power but differs in source, organization, and social practice. Rich rejects its noble-priority agreement; Faol is initially unaware of the separate Holy Church’s activities 306 316 347. The Stormwind Church of the Holy Light later merges with the Holy Church 345.
- Medivh and Khadgar — Rich detects something wrong with Medivh before Llane seeks his advice. Clerics later assist the cursed Khadgar and use the Holy Grail during Sargeras’s containment. Medivh subsequently explains the Church’s powers and reforms to Aegwynn and the Red Dragon Queen 317 337 344.
- Other civilized races of Azeroth — Potential allies and recruits, not excluded by the Church’s human origins. Its branches and clerics spread among nearly every civilized race 333 335 353.
- Undead, demons, and Old Gods’ forces — Threats confronted through evacuation, refugee care, combined arms, purification, and specialized deployments. Archimonde discovers that even gravely wounded clerics are difficult to kill through their advanced armor 356 360 365 378.
- Naaru and their followers — Initially puzzled by the legion’s power, seven Naaru accept Axel’s invitation to meet Li Ming. They become Light Spirits, while Li Ming promises that the Church will welcome their followers 382.
