Background / History
Childhood and medical work
Meli’s mother died while she was young. When Meli was six, her father discovered that she lacked aptitude for becoming a ninja and grew indifferent toward her. He spent much of his time away on missions and eventually never returned, leaving her with memories of an isolated childhood 6 7.
As a doctor in a border town in the Land of Rain, Meli charged very little for treatment and helped residents who could not afford care. Before Leah gained Holy Light powers, Meli had already treated one of the children in her group and provided food and money for medicine. She wanted to take the children in, but feared that Scarface would use them to threaten her 5 6 8.
Rescue and conversion
Scarface’s gang repeatedly disrupted Meli’s clinic after she refused his advances. He eventually arrived with armed followers and a wedding dress, attempting to force her into marriage. Although Meli resisted, the surrounding patients were too afraid of his ninja abilities to intervene. Leah stepped in and killed him, then declared Meli under her protection 5 6.
Meli initially offered her savings as thanks. After recognizing Leah beneath her hood and learning the source of her power, she asked to become a believer herself so that she could protect herself and others. Her awakening as a Priest gave her an immediate healing skill 6.
Establishing the first church
When Leah explained that she lacked funds to build a church, Meli offered her centrally located clinic instead. She also welcomed Leah and the children into her home. Their first shared dinner brought her to tears, and she asked whether they were now family; Leah and the children affirmed that they were 6 7.
Local craftsmen helped convert the building out of gratitude for Meli’s past care. Meli insisted on paying them despite their guilt over failing to confront Scarface, explaining that ordinary people could not safely oppose a ninja. After the church opened, she continued treating patients in a second-floor room and was initially its only Priest with Healing Technique 7 8.
Supporting the Holy Church
As refugee relief and training expenses strained the church’s finances, Meli introduced Leah to merchant Reilly. Their meeting secured a buyer for holy water at 5,000 ryo per bottle. After an attack on the church, Meli used Truth Spell on the captured shinobi, revealing their intelligence mission and a possible impending Sand offensive 9 10.
Meli remained responsible for the church while Leah went to reinforce Peace Village, and later moved with the Holy Church to Corona City. She reported the Priests’ progress in potion-making and recommended Reilly for the new intelligence department 14 23 25 26.
During negotiations with Hanzō, Meli printed the cooperation agreement and accompanied the delegation to the Holy Light Hall for its signing. By her later mention as a Silvermoon Priest, she was preparing tea capable of slowing aging 31 32 47.
As the Church continued expanding, Meli delivered Phil’s intelligence about Nagato’s abduction by a mysterious Uchiha using Space-Time Ninjutsu. She offered to fight if necessary, but Ria judged that the situation did not require her intervention. After comforting Ria with takoyaki, Meli agreed to help sort the mounting paperwork rather than leave to look after the younger children 78.
Meli was working alongside Ria when news arrived that the Fourth Hokage had authorized the Holy Church to maintain order in Konoha. Both welcomed the development as a major breakthrough for the Church’s influence in the Land of Fire. After reading the intelligence, Meli agreed with Ria’s favorable assessment of Minato 87.
Helping Axel and Mina
Meli joined Ria, Axel, and Mina on a shopping outing after Ria persuaded her work-focused younger brother to leave his duties for a while. Recognizing the pair’s affection, Meli helped Ria give Axel and Mina time alone, allowing Mina to confess her feelings 52.
Watching the couple from a distance, Meli defended Axel’s romantic obliviousness as a consequence of his dedication to the Holy Light. She gently teased Ria, acknowledged the difficulties Axel had endured, and suggested returning home to prepare a celebratory feast. The two welcomed Mina’s relationship with him as the addition of another family member 53.
Welcoming Night Raid and treating Kurome
Before Night Raid’s formal audience at Holy Church Headquarters, Meli reminded Ria of the approaching ceremony and tidied her hair while gently chiding her for being flustered. She then accompanied Ria to the church and helped present Medals of Courage to the visiting Night Raid members 165.
After Night Raid received Holy Light Seeds, Akame asked Ria to help Kurome, whose body had been damaged by the dark power of her Imperial Arms. Ria assigned Meli, explicitly identifying her as the Church’s strongest Priest, to examine and treat Kurome. Ria explained that recovery should be manageable after the invading darkness was dispelled, provided it had not affected Kurome’s mind. Meli then took the Night Raid members to treat her; the passage does not separately describe the treatment’s outcome 166.
Responsibility during the Azeroth expedition
When Ria prepared to accompany the expedition investigating another holy light in Azeroth, she entrusted their home world to Meli. Meli worried about the danger and was reluctant to be separated from her, but accepted that Ria’s responsibilities as Pope required the journey 299.
Their farewell was emotional. Meli asked Ria to be careful and promised to await her return at home. The narration likens her attachment to that of someone who has watched her own child grow, emphasizing the years they had spent together 299.
Appearance
- Described as a beautiful, full-figured woman with a graceful, dignified bearing 6 7.
- Has slender eyebrows and a familiar gentle smile when receiving patients 6.
- Moves with small, elegant steps; a later passage describes her red lips 25 31.
- Wears a fashionable white sunhat, a small black shoulder bag, and a fitted dark green qipao patterned with plum blossoms for the shopping outing with Ria, Axel, and Mina 52.
- Has a rosy complexion and a slender waist in her later domestic interactions with Ria 78.
- By the Azeroth expedition, her bearing has become increasingly dignified and elegant; even her simple priest’s robe is described as charming 299.
Personality
Meli’s compassion is practical: she provides affordable treatment, shares food, offers her property to the Church, and insists that workers receive payment. She does not condemn the townspeople for failing to rescue her, recognizing that their fear reflects a genuine lack of power rather than indifference 5 6 8.
Her gentleness does not prevent her from being firm. She refuses Scarface, persists until Leah accepts her clinic, and reprimands Leah for underage drinking because the older children must set an example. Within the household, she combines affectionate teasing with concern for everyone’s meals, rest, and safety 6 25 33.
Meli is less confident with administration than with medicine or cooking. When Leah asks for help with paperwork, she retreats to preparing lunch—not simply from laziness, but because she fears making mistakes that Leah would have to correct 28.
Despite this reluctance, she later sets aside her own plans to help Ria with paperwork because she cannot bear to see her continually working late into the night. Aside from the Holy Light, the children of their chosen family are identified as the people who matter most to her 78.
She is understanding about the tension between duty and personal happiness. Having watched Axel grow up, she recognizes why devotion to the Holy Light leaves him inattentive to romance, while still taking pleasure in his relationship with Mina 53.
Her affection for Ria remains intimate even after Ria becomes Pope. She continues offering ordinary familial care, such as straightening her hair before an audience, and finds their eventual separation difficult. Nevertheless, she respects Ria’s maturity and responsibilities rather than trying to prevent her departure 165 299.

- Unlocks Healing Technique immediately upon awakening 6.
- Heals patients’ minor aches and ailments with white light 8.
- Continues providing medical care after her clinic becomes a church 8.
- Explains that faith offers the possibility of gaining power, but personal effort remains necessary 8.
- Is chosen to treat Kurome’s bodily damage from dark power. Ria expects her to restore Kurome’s health after the darkness is dispelled, conditional on Kurome’s mind remaining unaffected 166.
Truth Spell
Meli can compel otherwise uncooperative prisoners to disclose information 10.
- Uses the spell on Xiliu’s two captured students 10.
- Obtains their mission details and warning of possible Sand shinobi activity 10.
Potion-Making and Restorative Tea
Meli reports the Priests’ collective breakthroughs in medicinal research; the text does not attribute every recipe to her individually 25.

- Their life potions are described as comparable to holy water, offering an alternative to its production process 25.

Standing and Combat Readiness
Although Meli rarely takes action in combat, she holds the honor of being the foremost Priest, and no Holy Light Cleric dares underestimate her. She offers to fight after learning about the masked Uchiha threat, but Ria declines because the problem does not require her direct intervention 78.
Iron Hammer later includes the legendary Meli among the Church’s highest-level figures when explaining its hierarchy to Tatsumi and his companions. Ria likewise calls her the Holy Church’s strongest Priest when entrusting Kurome’s treatment to her. These statements establish her standing without specifying a new level or demonstrating additional named combat techniques 134 166.

- Delivers printed intelligence and helps Ria sort through Church documents despite her earlier reluctance toward paperwork 78.

Relationships
- Leah / Artoria / Ria — Former acquaintance, rescuer, fellow believer, and chosen younger sister. Leah protects Meli, while Meli provides a home, medical support, meals, and guidance 6 7 25 33. Their familial closeness continues after Ria becomes Pope: Meli helps ease her workload, assists with her preparations for formal ceremonies, and remains someone with whom Ria can behave affectionately rather than maintain papal dignity. Ria entrusts their home world to her during the Azeroth expedition, and their farewell emphasizes Meli’s almost maternal attachment 78 165 299.
