Background
Gold Saints are the twelve elite Saints entrusted with guarding the Twelve Palaces, the final defensive route to Athena's Kami's Lookout. Silver Saints guard the Sanctuary's outer buildings and routes, while Bronze Saints ordinarily support them; Gold Saints are deployed outside the Palaces only for exceptional missions. 200
Their shared rank does not make them equals in combat. The stated difference between the strongest and weakest Gold Saints can rival the gulf between a Bronze Saint and a Gold Saint. 183 Reaching the Seventh Sense is the basic threshold for Gold Saint-level strength, but the gap between its initial and peak stages is itself immense. 254
The order was fractured when Saga, the Gemini Gold Saint, assassinated Pope Shion and usurped the papal throne on Athena's birth day. Deathmask was among the only two Gold Saints aware of Saga's true identity, while many other Saints continued to trust the Pope's authority. 174 183
After Saori revealed herself as Athena, the Gold Saints were forced to choose between Saga's regime and their duty to Athena. Mu openly received Saori at Aries Palace, and most of the surviving Gold Saints later assembled against Black Saga. 191 198
Appearance
Gold Saints wear radiant Gold Cloths, typically accompanied by ornate helmets and flowing capes. Their armor marks them immediately as the Sanctuary's highest-tier Saints. 183 196
- Gold Cloths provide exceptional defense and enhance their wearer's Cosmo. 184 206
- Individual Cloth designs correspond to the Saint's assigned zodiac constellation, such as Leo, Cancer, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Pisces. 183 196
- Former Gold Saints later receive black, Gold Cloth-patterned armors whose durability and Cosmo enhancement equal the original Gold Cloths. 253
Abilities & Skills
Seventh Sense Cosmo
The Seventh Sense is the defining power threshold of a Gold Saint. Gold Saints can perceive and react far beyond Bronze and Silver Saints, including through superior sensory ability. 191 192
- A Saint who reaches the Seventh Sense is considered Gold Saint-level. 254
- Gold Saints can communicate battle plans through Cosmo without speaking aloud. 192
- Their five senses greatly exceed those of Silver and Bronze Saints. 192
- Even Gold Saints recognized as weaker than their peers can dominate multiple Seventh Sense Bronze Saints. 191
Light Speed Fist
Every Gold Saint can use the Light Speed Fist, attacks delivered at light speed. 205
- It can be unleashed from more than the fists; Aiolia demonstrates that any body part can employ it. 190
- Deathmask and Shura combine Light Speed Fists to shatter Scylla's Scale Cloth and incapacitate him immediately. 205
- Individual Saints adapt the principle into personal styles, including Aiolia's lightning-based punches and Deathmask's Cancer Light Speed Fist. 226 245
Specialized Techniques
Each Gold Saint supplements shared Gold Saint fundamentals with distinctive techniques and combat styles.
- Deathmask uses Sekishiki Meikai Ha, an Underworld Wave that sends targets to the Underworld. 192
- Shura uses the Saint Sword Excalibur, capable of cutting through Berenice's supposedly unbreakable divine hair. 226
- Aphrodite employs poisonous roses, plant communication, and hypnosis; his Royal Rose poison is especially effective against large numbers of Berserkers. 196 227 247
- Aldebaran combines the defensive Iai Defense with the offensive Great Horn. 226
- Milo's Scarlet Needle can be used as a prolonged execution technique or aimed lethally at vital points for a swift kill. 239
Combined Techniques
Gold Saints can coordinate their Cosmos for techniques unavailable to individual Saints.
- Athena Exclamation requires three Gold Saints and is described as a forbidden trinity technique with power capable of rivaling the Big Bang; using it carries the penalty of losing Saint status. 230
- Zodiac Twelve Howl combines the strongest techniques of all twelve Gold Saints into a single concentrated attack capable of destroying heaven and earth. 340
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gold Cloths — constellation-linked armor that provides major defensive and Cosmo-enhancing benefits. 184 206
- God of War's golden shield — an emergency divine artifact used by the Gold Saints to block Loki's Gungnir. 250
- Divine spear — carried with the shield as a prearranged countermeasure against Loki during the North Europe operation. 249
- Black Gold Cloth-style armors — Cloths created for the former Gold Saints, matching original Gold Cloths in sturdiness and Cosmo enhancement. 253
Relationships
- Athena / Saori Kido — their goddess and highest loyalty; both current and resurrected former Gold Saints choose to serve her. 191 198 243
- Pope Shion — former Pope assassinated by Saga during the Sanctuary coup. 174
- Saga — Gemini Gold Saint whose secret coup divided the Sanctuary; later leads Gold Saints during the World Tree crisis. 174 247
- Silver Saints and Bronze Saints — subordinate Saint ranks; Gold Saints train, command, and at times fight alongside them in Sanctuary-wide conflicts. 200 260
- Former Gold Saints — eleven Saints from an earlier generation resurrected by Meruem; they continue serving Athena while the current twelve retain their positions. 243 253
- Meruem — provides strategic direction, training resources, emergency artifacts, and the resurrection of former Gold Saints. 241 243 249
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sanctuary Succession Crisis
Saga's murder of Shion and seizure of the Pope's position place the Gold Saints under a false authority. Saori's return as Athena forces the Twelve Palaces' guardians to confront the truth and choose their allegiance. 174 191 198
Twelve Palaces Battle
The Five Little Strong Ones challenge the Twelve Palaces as both a test and a means of gaining Gold Saint support. Mu aids their ascent, while Deathmask, Camus, Shura, Aphrodite, Milo, and Saga oppose them at different stages. 191 192 195 196 197
Wars against Kami and External Armies
Gold Saints fight Sea Fighters, Corona Saints, Berserkers, and Abel's forces as the Sanctuary faces threats beyond its internal conflict. They demonstrate coordinated combat against armies and powerful individual enemies, but Abel's strength leaves even top Gold Saints unable to harm him directly. 205 226 227 230
World Tree Incident
A Gold Saint team led by Saga intervenes in North Europe against Andreas and the World Tree. The group battles God Warriors, exposes Andreas as Loki, and ultimately confronts Loki after he acquires Gungnir. 247 248 249 250
Expansion of the Sanctuary
Meruem resurrects eleven former Gold Saints, who reaffirm their loyalty to Athena. Rather than replace the current Twelve Palace guardians, the former Saints receive equivalent black Cloths and become an additional force within the Sanctuary. 243 253
Little Sanctuary and Pallasite Conflicts
The appearance of Mars's Little Sanctuary introduces another group calling itself Gold Saints, including warriors who vary sharply in Seventh Sense mastery. As later threats escalate, the main Sanctuary's Gold Saints train the younger Saints while former Gold Saints focus on preventing Specter infiltrations. 255 256 260 342
Trivia
- Gold Saints are not forbidden from marrying; the Sanctuary encourages it because descendants of outstanding Gold Saints are generally expected to possess strong potential. 247
- The title “Gold Saint” denotes a power threshold rather than equal combat ability; an initial Seventh Sense warrior and a peak Seventh Sense warrior may be separated by an enormous gap. 254
- Gold Saints themselves acknowledge that the God Cloths of the Five Little Strong Ones surpass any non-divine battle attire, including Gold Cloths. 346
