Background / History

Meruem begins as a transmigrator awakening within the Chimera Ant Queen's womb. He merges with the Ant King identity, recognizes the Queen's care before his birth, and emerges in a perfected form after Netero's assault on the nest 1 2 3.

Unlike the original Ant King, Meruem initially pursues survival through negotiation. He asks Netero to secure territory for the Chimera Ants, offers intelligence on the Dark Continent, and threatens war if coexistence is refused. At the same time, he promises to kill Netero in three months to avenge the Queen 3.

After the Queen's death, Meruem permits the surviving ants to leave rather than forcing obedience. More than half depart; he retains a smaller core of loyal subordinates, then humbles them with information about the Dark Continent and pushes them into Nen training 4 5 6. He conquers the East Gorteau Republic, installs ant officials, prohibits human flesh consumption, begins artificial-ant production, and develops the Chimera Ant Army into an organized state 7.

Meruem ultimately survives the Hunter Association's extermination campaign and confronts multiple elite Nen users. He defeats Lovskiy after learning his martial arts, withstands coordinated attacks by Zeno, Silva, Beyond, and others, and uses Hyakki Yagyō to break their restraints 34 35 36. During the final conflict, he transfers Netero's nuclear weapon to Hunter Association headquarters and conceals the circumstances of Netero's death from the surviving Hunters 30.

He sacrifices his physical form and memories to revive Pitou, then leaves Earth with the remaining Chimera Ants. He awakens in Konoha as a weakened child under Uchiha Ruiko's care 41 42. In the Naruto World, he rebuilds his army, appoints Pitou as Queen, infiltrates and conquers the Mist Ninja Village, and pursues increasingly powerful bloodlines and techniques through absorption 85 86 98.

After defeating Kaguya, Nue, and Abe no Yoshihira, Meruem consumes the Chakra Fruit and leaves for the Dragon Ball World 136 137. He learns Ki-based techniques across several planets, defeats Cooler, later confronts Frieza, and continues strengthening his army for interstellar conflict 145 153 171 172.

In later worlds, he learns Cosmo, creates Source, becomes Athena's guardian, steals Abel's Divinity, and eventually defeats the Great Emperor's Army of the King before forcing Gilgamesh to retreat 176 234 334 338.

Appearance

Meruem is born resembling a dark-green-skinned human youth rather than the original Ant King's more insectoid appearance. He deliberately shaped his body toward human proportions during rebirth, removing features such as the mushroom-like head and syringe tail 2 3.

Personality

Meruem is pragmatic, calculating, and deeply concerned with long-term survival. He recognizes that the Chimera Ants are vulnerable despite their strength, deliberately warns his followers against arrogance, and prioritizes training, organization, intelligence, and population growth over indiscriminate slaughter 4 6 7.

He is ruthless when pursuing power or eliminating threats. He manipulates the account of Netero's death, treats revived Hokage as targets for absorption, and plans to use Komugi's body in an attempt to obtain a stronger, potentially immortal body 30 98 270.

His protectiveness is highly selective. Meruem values Pitou enough to sacrifice his life force to revive her, and he considers Ruiko one of the only people he genuinely wishes to protect 41 44. He also respects opponents who demonstrate perseverance, sparing Lovskiy so that they may fight again in the future 35.
