Background / History
Hongjun was already renowned throughout the Primordial World during the Dragon–Phoenix clans’ struggle for supremacy, before his ascension or public sermons 382. His earlier history includes joining Yinyang Ancestor and Qiankun Ancestor to slay Luo Hou. Pangu had also humiliated him, leaving a lasting psychological shadow that resurfaces when Pangu’s descendants challenge him 495 520.
His ultimate ambition is to bring the Primordial World under his control through the Heavenly Dao, then achieve true transcendence and pursue the Great Dao. Advancing the Heavenly Dao’s control strengthens him, while the independent awakening of the Human Dao and Earth Dao threatens that ambition 509 510 520 522.
Appearance
Hongjun appears as an elderly Daoist with an immortal bearing and an unfathomable presence, described as resembling the source of heaven and earth 416.
- White robes during his first appearance before the Zixiao Palace guests 416.
- Hemp robes while cultivating in Zixiao Palace and confronting Nuwa 450 451.
- Purple Daoist robes when intervening in the Witch–Demon War 495.
- A manifested eye in his brow that emits sacred white light during his battle with the Human Dao Golden Dragon 524.
Personality
Hongjun maintains a calm, detached public manner, presenting his decisions as service to the Primordial World and expressions of the Heavenly Dao’s will. Behind that authority, he treats powerful cultivators and entire races as pieces in a long-term scheme to secure control over the world 416 448 495 496.
He is calculating rather than indiscriminately aggressive. When Nuwa attains Primordial Unity and escapes his control, he restrains his anger because she knows enough of his secrets to damage his plans if pressed too far 451. His composure breaks when anomalies threaten his path to the Dao: identifying Ling Feng as their source provokes unprecedented killing intent 520.
His resentment toward Pangu remains especially personal. The Ancestral Witches’ defiance and their recreation of Pangu’s form revive both his fear of Pangu and his anger at being humiliated 494 495.
Abilities & Skills
Dao Teaching
Hongjun’s sermons convey cultivation principles beyond the audience’s existing understanding 411 416.
- His first lecture helps Nuwa, Laozi, Yuanshi, Tongtian, and other leading cultivators achieve breakthroughs, with their Three Flowers blooming at the ninth grade 416.
- Much of the teaching exceeds the listeners’ comprehension; they must study it further in seclusion 416 417.
- Completes three lectures and accepts the Six Disciples of the Xuan Sect 445.
Fortune Absorption
Hongjun uses the fortune of powerful beings to increase his cultivation 416.
- The Three Thousand Guests’ salute gathers fortune around him and raises him from the early to middle Saint stage 416.
- His lecture balances the exchange by canceling the associated karmic debt 416.
- Ling Feng’s system protects his fortune from being affected 416.
Heavenly Dao Authority
After merging with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun can impose overwhelming pressure and directly suppress lesser powers 495 496.
- Freezes Ling Feng’s Creation Quasi-Saints before they can self-destruct 495.
- Halts the Pangu True Body, then shatters it with heavenly might, gravely injuring all twelve Ancestral Witches 495 496.
- His pressure forces ordinary beings to the ground and makes Quasi-Saints’ souls tremble; Saints and the Pangu True Body withstand that pressure 496.
- Freezes the Blood Sea, wind, and clouds during the later confrontation, although Saints and the Human Dao Golden Dragon remain unaffected 524.
Lightning and Heavenly Eye
Hongjun channels destructive power through enormous eyes manifested above the Primordial World 496 521 523.
- Transforms purple lightning into a vast thunder dragon to counter the Pangu True Body’s Heaven-Opening strike 496.
- Overwhelms Ling Feng and Houtu’s combined defense with purple lightning 521.
- Uses a white beam from his brow eye to steadily wear down the Human Dao Golden Dragon 524.
Divination and Concealment
Hongjun reads the Heavenly Dao’s grand course and investigates deviations from it 495 509 520.
- Uses the Heavenly Dao Wheel and incomplete Jade Disc of Creation to strengthen his divination 520.
- Cannot initially account for Ling Feng or his Creation Quasi-Saints 416 495.
- Concealed heavenly workings prevent him from discovering the ambush against Shang Yang’s delegation 509.
- Eventually identifies Ling Feng after Houtu’s attainment exposes the relevant heavenly secrets, but suffers severe backlash and spits blood during the attempt 520.
- Seals the Blood Sea behind fractured space to contain the threatened destruction of a Saint’s self-detonation 523.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Jade Disc of Creation — An incomplete fragment, not a complete Chaos Treasure. Assists divination, emits three thousand Great Dao halos, and helps Hongjun restrain the Human Dao Golden Dragon 520 523 526.
- God-Slaying Spear — The Primordial World’s foremost supreme treasure of slaughter. Hongjun uses it to keep Ling Feng on the defensive and repeatedly strike the Chaos Bell, though he does not immediately breach its combined defense under Ling Feng and Houtu 521 522.
- Heavenly Dao Wheel — A manifested instrument of his Heavenly Dao power, used in battle, divination, and sealing the Blood Sea 496 520 523.
- Primordial purple qi — Bestows strands upon his six disciples and Hongyun. Places a retrieval spell on Hongyun’s strand so that it returns to him after serving its purpose 445 448.
Relationships
- Ling Feng — Listener turned principal adversary. Initially inscrutable to Hongjun’s calculations; later identified as the greatest anomaly obstructing his path to the Dao 416 520 521.
- Nuwa — Disciple who escapes his control by attaining Primordial Unity rather than accepting Heaven-Ordained sainthood. Their relationship becomes one of mutual suspicion and restraint 450 451.
- Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian — Disciples who attend his sermons and later marvel at his superiority over the Pangu True Body 411 451 496.
- Two Western Saints — Saint disciples who witness his battle against the Ancestral Witches and acknowledge the gulf between their strength and his 495 496.
- Hongyun — Recipient of a deliberately dangerous strand of primordial purple qi. Hongjun uses his pursuit of sainthood to provoke conflict and initiate the Witch–Demon Tribulation 445 448.
- Di Jun and Eastern Emperor Taiyi — Demon leaders preserved as pieces in his larger plan. They mistake his intervention for genuine support of the Demon Race 495 497 509.
- Twelve Ancestral Witches — Defiant opponents whom he defeats through their Pangu formation. Their survival depends on reluctantly accepting his truce 495 496 497.
- Houtu — Her independent attainment and awakening of the Earth Dao threaten his intended world order. He attacks her alongside Ling Feng, although her essential role in reincarnation constrains his ability to kill her outright 520 521 522.
- Haotian and Yaochi — Zixiao Palace attendants who announce his arrival and are later terrified by his killing intent 416 520.
- Pangu — Source of an enduring humiliation; Hongjun admits that the true Pangu would give him reservations, unlike the Witches’ recreated body 495 496.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Zixiao Palace Sermons
Hongjun’s ascension draws the Primordial World’s strongest cultivators toward Zixiao Palace. At the first gathering, he confirms the seats of the Six Fated Ones without insisting on their exact order, then begins his teachings 411 416. After the third sermon, he accepts six disciples and distributes primordial purple qi, including the strand given to Hongyun 445.
Engineering the Witch–Demon Tribulation
Hongyun’s supposed opportunity is a trap: competition over his purple qi draws powerful cultivators, witches, and demons into conflict. His death doubles the world’s baleful energy and helps begin a world-spanning tribulation, while the qi itself returns to Hongjun 448.
Nuwa’s independent attainment subsequently disrupts his plans. He rebukes her but withdraws rather than risk exposing his schemes; the manifestation of the Human Dao later provokes another furious reaction without immediate intervention 450 451 457.
Intervention in the Witch–Demon War
Hongjun waits for a decisive moment to preserve the Demon Race, but Ling Feng’s self-destructing Quasi-Saints disrupt his timing 494 495. When the Ancestral Witches reject his decree, he defeats their Pangu True Body and leaves both races badly depleted. Ling Feng and Nuwa recognize the outcome as serving his effort to restore a usable balance between them 496.
He imposes a truce lasting ten cosmic cycles: demons govern the heavens, and witches rule the earth 497. He then seeks to complete Di Jun’s Heavenly Marriage, intending to restore the Demon Race’s fortune before resuming the tribulation and ushering in the age of Saints 509.
Blood Sea Confrontation
Houtu’s attainment finally exposes Ling Feng as the source of the mounting anomalies. Hongjun leaves Zixiao Palace and attacks them above the Blood Sea, then answers Ling Feng’s Chaos Bell with the God-Slaying Spear 520 521.
Unable to defeat him directly, Ling Feng prepares a substitute to stage his death while Houtu completes the Underworld and awakens the Earth Dao 522. Hongjun seals the Blood Sea against the threatened explosion and later clashes with the Human Dao Golden Dragon 523 524. By the confrontation’s end, he is possessed by the Heavenly Dao and no longer dares provoke Nuwa after she recalls the dragon 525.
Ling Feng subsequently seeks the Star Tower and further cultivation as preparation for returning to challenge Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao 526 533.
