History
Rise and Formal Establishment
The Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin tribes’ withdrawal after devastating losses leaves the Primordial World’s hundred races without a dominant leader. Most belong to the Demon Race, whose members lose territory to the expanding Witch Race and are hunted for food 418.
Di Jun deliberately waits for this pressure to create demand for leadership. He and Taiyi travel the Primordial World rescuing demons, building their reputation until the Ten Great Demon Saints petition them for protection. The brothers accept the Demon Emperor thrones and unite most demons on the Primordial Continent 418.
They then proclaim the Demon Race and establish its Court on the Sun Star. The Heavenly Dao recognizes their oath and grants merit, divided among Di Jun, Taiyi, Fuxi, and Nuwa. Naming the latter two emperors is a calculated attempt to secure powerful supporters: Fuxi accepts, but Nuwa resents the imposed title 419.
Consolidation and the First Major Clash
The new regime remains loosely organized. Many demons cannot even fly to the Sun Star for protection, while independent experts refuse to submit. Di Jun proposes spreading improved cultivation arts based on Hongjun’s teachings and finding an accessible, defensible homeland 420.
A struggle over Hongyun’s primordial purple qi produces the first major clash between the factions’ strongest fighters. Di Jun and Taiyi summon the Ten Great Demon Sages against Dijiang and Xuan Ming; the remaining Ancestral Witches arrive in response. The Witches hold the advantage, and the demons retreat after Hongyun’s fatal self-destruction disrupts the battlefield 447 448.
Four Demon Sages had also participated in the pursuit of Hongyun and survived his earlier feigned self-destruction. Believing the Demon Race responsible for his friend’s apparent death, Zhenyuanzi vows revenge 446.
Acquisition of the Heavenly Court
Using Di Jun’s River Map and Luo Writing, Fuxi locates a sacred cultivation ground in the Thirty-Three Heavens. The three rulers and ten Sages break its innate formation, revealing a palace complex rich in stellar power behind the Southern Heavenly Gate 448.
Di Jun claims the Heavenly Court as the new Demon Court, and the demons on the Sun Star migrate there. Its vast capacity, fortune, and access to stellar power give the race a secure base for recuperation and expansion 449.
After more than a thousand years, Di Jun seeks to unite the remaining independent demons. Ji Meng recommends first subduing Kunpeng, then attracting other experts through duty and substantial benefits. Kunpeng is a difficult target: he rivals Di Jun in cultivation and prestige, commands tens of billions of demons, and has created the widely useful demon script. The supplied account establishes the proposal, not its completion 449.
Conflict with Humanity and Nuwa’s Departure
Human expansion produces territorial disputes with demons, particularly because the wild beasts humans hunt are descendants of the Demon Race 452.
Ji Meng later attempts to devour humans on a massive scale after learning that doing so can rapidly enhance cultivation. He assumes Nuwa’s nominal position as Empress Wa—and her previous lack of intervention—means she approves. Nuwa instead descends and suppresses the invading demons 459 460.
When Di Jun and Fuxi appeal to her Demon Race ties, Nuwa declares that she never accepted the Wa Sovereign title. Her public renunciation immediately reduces the race’s fortune and causes Di Jun to spit blood. She spares Ji Meng to settle her remaining karmic connection, expels the invaders, and seals Human territory against them 461 462.
The loss leaves the Court without her protection. Jieyin and Zhunti’s subsequent attainment of sainthood makes their existing hostility especially dangerous, since the Demon Race had previously humiliated them during the contest for the Kongtong Seal 456 470.
Witch-Demon War and Catastrophic Defeat
Years of rivalry culminate in all-out war. Although the Witches have the stronger core fighters, the Demon Race sustains a grinding stalemate through its own powerful experts and magical treasures 493.
The decisive formation battle goes badly for the demons. Their incomplete Cosmic Stars Formation cannot withstand the Pangu True Body summoned by the Twelve Heavenly Gods and Fiends Formation. Its destruction inflicts heavy casualties and severe backlash on Di Jun and the other leaders 494.
Ling Feng then secretly teleports mass-produced Quasi-Saint puppets into the demon ranks and detonates them. Hongjun intervenes before another wave explodes, preventing the race’s destruction. He ultimately decrees that demons will rule the heavens, witches the earth, and neither may fight for ten cosmic cycles 494 495 497.
The returning Court has fewer than one in ten of its former demons remaining, has lost two mighty Quasi-Saints, and has suffered lasting damage to its foundations. Ji Meng urges recuperation, replenishment of high-level fighters, and completion of the Cosmic Stars Formation 500.
Lunar Star Marriage Scheme
Ji Meng proposes bringing the Lunar Star into the Court through Di Jun’s marriage to its two Quasi-Saint goddesses, Changxi and Xihe. Their strength and stellar authority could repair the formation’s principal weakness. Fuxi agrees to ask Nuwa to act as matchmaker 500 502.
Shang Yang subsequently leads a lavish proposal procession. Both sisters refuse, and his courteous approach becomes a threat of invasion. Changxi uses the Lunar Star’s power and her Moonlight Treasure Wheel to wound and expel him 506.
Ling Feng arrives after the sisters contact him, openly taking their side despite the Demon Race’s power. Following the failed mission and Shang Yang’s cultivation loss, Di Jun orders a march against the Lunar Star. Hongjun later notes that Di Jun still has not completed the Heavenly Marriage 507 509 510.
Abilities and Military Strength
Cultivation Arts
- Most early demons cultivate instinctively or use crude arts, leaving many unable to advance 420.
- Di Jun asks the leaders to refine and distribute teachings capable of reaching Daluo Golden Immortal, using Hongjun’s lectures as their foundation 420.
- Kunpeng’s demon script removes the advanced-cultivation restrictions associated with profound Dao script, making it better suited to transmitting knowledge among demons 449.
Cosmic Stars Formation
- Draws upon the Primordial World’s stars; Di Jun activates it by stirring the Sun Star with peak Quasi-Saint power 494.
- Manifests a stellar giant, but its wartime version lacks the Lunar Star’s light and support from several other stars 494.
- Its defeat causes severe backlash to the leaders and widespread casualties among the participating demons 494.
- Restoring Quasi-Saint personnel and securing the Lunar Star are essential parts of Ji Meng’s reconstruction plan 500 502.
Battlefield Strengths and Limits
- Numerical superiority: Vast numbers help the Demon Race survive its early disadvantage against the Witches 420.
- Magical treasures: Di Jun uses treasures and ranged attacks against Dijiang, exploiting the Witches’ inability to wield such items 493.
- Weaker core forces: The Ancestral Witches and Great Witches generally outperform the Demon Race’s corresponding elite fighters; ordinary troops have little influence against such opponents 470.
- No protection against Saints: Losing Nuwa exposes the Court to powers far beyond its emperors’ military reach 470.
Headquarters and Resources
- Sun Star Demon Court — Original headquarters, established amid Sun True Fire; inaccessible to many weaker demons 418 419 420.
- Heavenly Court — Located in the Thirty-Three Heavens at Mount Buzhou. Di Jun states that it can accommodate hundreds of billions and provides access to stellar power and tremendous fortune 448 449.
- River Map and Luo Writing — Di Jun’s treasures, used by Fuxi to locate the Heavenly Court 448.
- Chaos Bell — Taiyi’s major defensive and combat treasure; freezes Zhurong’s attacking fire dragons during their first major battle 447.
- Ren Water Flat Peach Tree — Already removed by Ling Feng before the Demon Race acquires the Heavenly Court; most of the Court’s other resources and fortune remain intact 449.
Relationships
- Witch Race — Principal rival. Territorial expansion and hunting create the original hostility, which grows into a blood feud and open war 418 493 499.
- Nuwa — Unwillingly named an emperor and later invoked as the Court’s protector. She renounces the position and severs her ties after the invasion of Human territory 419 457 461 462.
- Human Race — Territorial competitor and target of demon predation; protected by Nuwa’s explicit prohibition against further harm 452 459 462.
- Hongjun — Grants teachings and prevents the race’s destruction, but secretly manipulates both demons and witches as instruments of the tribulation. The demon leaders mistake his intervention for genuine favor 420 448 495 497.
- Ling Feng — Enemy of Taiyi and protector of humanity. Secretly cripples the Demon Race to delay the tribulation and disrupt Hongjun’s plans 425 426 494 500.
- Kunpeng — Independent demon power and creator of demon script. His following, cultivation, and reputation make him a major obstacle to Di Jun’s complete unification 449.
- Zhenyuanzi — Vows revenge after blaming the Demon Race for Hongyun’s apparent death 446.
- Jieyin and Zhunti — Become enemies after the Demon Race drives them back during the Kongtong Seal dispute; intend to exploit Witch-Demon conflict for revenge 456 470.
- Changxi and Xihe — Reject Di Jun’s proposed marriages and resist the Court’s attempt to force their submission 506 509.
