Background / History

Dong Santong worked as an errand boy in a brothel before Buddha Xuanmen brought him to the Heavenly Dao Sect. At his introduction, he had joined roughly three years earlier. He initially resented being taken away, but came to enjoy immortal arts and hoped to return to his former workplace to show off his abilities 146.

His rare light root was the reason Xuanmen accepted him as a disciple. Dong’s unruly behavior led his master to confine him with restrictions, but after beginning cultivation he accidentally discovered that he could pass through them. Xuanmen stopped relying on confinement and warned him not to use the ability recklessly 151 506.

Dong’s origins later acquired political importance: the Dragon Race suspected that he was the Immortal Race’s missing Child of Light, while Human Race leaders feared the consequences of his disappearance. Daode Daoist Patriarch concealed him and refused to disclose his identity because of a sworn pact. Dong eventually returned to the Immortal Race, where he underwent prolonged cultivation and study in a role he had not chosen for himself 1925 1974 1975 2207 2264.

Appearance

Dong initially appears as a plump, fair-skinned, bald man dressed like a monk. He denies actually being a monk, explaining that he copied his master’s appearance because he considered it handsome 146.

  • Early appearance: Chubby face, small eyes, and a bulging belly 146 1224.
  • After Treasure Mountain: Extremely thin and lanky, with defined abdominal muscles. His bald head, clothing, and familiar aura remain recognizable 1224.
  • Later appearance: Plump and fair-skinned again; at his Immortal Race reunion, he wears white robes and a gold crown over a full head of hair 1254 2207.
  • Emergency combat form: Can swell to three or four times his normal size, becoming a ball-like body covered in black runes and white light 1077.

Personality

Dong is boastful, irreverent, sociable, and eager to attract attention. He teases Li Xiaoya about romance, volunteers for fights to “steal the limelight,” and treats reunions as opportunities to spar. His love of food persists even after centuries of cultivation: immediately after returning from Treasure Mountain, he asks for something to eat 146 526 1224 1225.

His loyalty is far more serious than his banter. He repeatedly risks his life for Li Xiaoya, protects Li’s loved ones, and regards his senior brother’s affairs as his own. After Li disappears, this devotion becomes a centuries-long campaign of revenge against the Dragon Race 608 616 628 851 1802 1925.

Dong can be observant and tactically inventive in combat, identifying concealed equipment and adapting when direct attacks fail. Outside battle, however, he is impulsive and comparatively vulnerable to elaborate schemes. Fu Yuchen exploits that weakness, while Heavenly Feather True Immortal explicitly considers him unable to keep a secret 526 1289 2208 2264.

Abilities & Skills

Light-Attribute Divine Abilities

Dong’s mutated light root provides exceptional speed and versatile offensive techniques at both close and long range 151 175.

  • Produces concentrated beams, light swords, conjured hands, white blades, and White-Light Feathers 175 176 486 1254.
  • Uses white spheres to blind opponents and exploit the Demon Dragon General’s discomfort with light 1289 1801.
  • Develops a concealed strike that allows him to remain invisible after attacking. Its use against King Ten-Thousand-Zhangs consumes half his magic power 1076.
  • Later launches enormous blades that track White Ghost True Devil through repeated teleportation, followed by translucent longblade slashes capable of damaging the devil’s bone-bladed arms 2408 2410.

Invisibility and Shadow Body Arts

Dong uses Light Invisibility Art, Light-Shadow Body Art, and Shadow Body Art to conceal himself, misdirect opponents, and deliver ambushes 176 484 1287.

  • Can disappear from multiple cultivators’ divine sense; by the Race Battlefield period, ordinary Mighty One Stage cultivators cannot detect him with divine sense from a hundred miles away when he uses full concealment 484 1773.
  • Creates attacking copies that reform after destruction and can be indistinguishable from his real body 486 1566 1753.
  • Uses substitutes to survive apparent killing blows and escape pursuit 608 1076 1567.
  • Deploys explosive white-light figures to interrupt the Great Qian Devil Lord’s teleportation 1298.
  • Limits: Li Xiaoya detects his early invisibility through unusually strong divine sense. King Ten-Thousand-Zhangs exposes him with golden light, and the big-nosed cultivator tracks him by scent 176 617 1076.

Restriction-Bypassing Ability

An innate ability unique to Dong’s light-root aptitude allows him to pass through restrictions rather than destroy them. Its discovery dates to his escape from Xuanmen’s confinement; a later account associates it with his tongue 506 1225.

  • Carries the unconscious Li Xiaoya through the Heavenly Earth Tower’s restrictions 616.
  • Passes through Treasure Mountain’s Five-Colored Light Curtain, which withstands King Ten-Thousand-Zhangs’s Demon Core attack 1078 1225.
  • Limits: Repeated use contributes to severe magic-power depletion during the rescue. It does not free him from Fu Yuchen’s specially prepared cord and possession trap 616 2263 2264.

Six-Light Shield

Dong conjures a reflective shield that redirects incoming spells toward their caster 176.

  • Reflects Flame Blades, Cross Flame Blades, and fire serpents 176.
  • Can deploy two shields simultaneously to block Qi Qinglong’s thirty-six spiritual knives 526.
  • Limit: Li Xiaoya pressures the defense by splitting attacks and sending them from four directions 176.

Soft Body Tempering

Dong’s supple-body art emphasizes flexibility and absorption rather than the hardness of Li Xiaoya’s body tempering 1004.

  • Makes his body extraordinarily flexible and resistant to physical battering 1004.
  • Supports a swollen, rune-covered form that deflects attacks while he forces his way through a demon-beast horde 1077.
  • Allows him to survive Yan Longzi’s tail strike while shielding Li Xiaoya, though he is severely injured 1802.

Movement, Spatial Techniques, and Eyesight

Dong combines light-based movement with specialized equipment and later learns a Spatial Law Divine Ability from the Immortal Sovereign 1077 2266.

  • Uses wing-assisted teleportation to evade King Ten-Thousand-Zhangs’s expanding golden rings 1077.
  • Can sacrifice lifespan and cultivation for a major speed increase 1077.
  • Uses the Spatial Law Divine Ability during his escape as a Nascent Soul 2266.
  • Possesses exceptional eyesight, detecting distant mountains and following Li Xiaoya and Yan Longzi across unobstructed void from over a thousand kilometers away 1076 1801.
  • Limits: His winged treasure has a finite teleportation reserve; sacrificing lifespan and cultivation makes prolonged flight costly 1077.

Earth Spirit Overlord Armor

After losing his body to Fu Yuchen, Dong takes control of the Earth Spirit Overlord’s immense Light Crystal Immortal Stone armor. The Overlord’s true form is a sentient crystal essence, not the gigantic exterior; Dong traps the essence inside its own body, where it dies. This is not possession of the Overlord 2280.

  • Supplies enormous physical strength, helping him and Li Xiaoya kill the Light-Winged Dragon King 2275.
  • Blocks divine sense so effectively that Li Xiaoya and Xiao Qian can hide inside it 2289.
  • Enables Dong to impersonate the Overlord, move through demon-beast territory, and enter Ten Thousand Demon City 2289.
  • Makes him, by his own assessment, stronger than before despite losses of cultivation and equipment 2289.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Moonlight Crescent Saber — His life-bound magic treasure, refined by Second Better. Can split into phantom sabers or a storm of blades. Repeated strengthening raises it to exceptional grade; it is badly damaged by King Ten-Thousand-Zhangs and again during the possession ordeal, but Xiao Qian returns it to him 603 1077 1565 1782 2207 2289.
  • Moon-Slaying Divine Light Blade — A gift from Li Xiaoya. Dong refines it beneath his tongue with a fragment of his spirit; this hidden preparation enables his Nascent Soul to escape Fu Yuchen’s trap 2265 2267.
  • Azure-Wind Light Wings — Manifested alongside a giant bird phantom during his battle with the reception envoys and surrounding cultivators 1565.
  • Golden protective orb — An emergency item supplied by Buddha Xuanmen before entering seclusion. Its lightning destroys the big-nosed cultivator’s poisonous bird and damages his flying sword 617.
  • Light Crystal Immortal Stone armor — The Earth Spirit Overlord’s former exterior, later used as Dong’s combat shell, disguise, and concealed transport for allies 2280 2289.
  • Emergency Message Talisman — Sends Qianshan an image of the floating Treasure Mountain before Dong approaches it 1076 1078.
  • Soul Life-Bound Lamps — Given to Li Xiaoya and Xiao Qian; their weakening aura alerts the pair that Dong is in danger 2266.
  • Cross-marked sphere — A mission-specific targeting marker secretly planted beneath the demon army’s Black Flying Boat for the Fire Rain Meteor Formation 1287.

Relationships

  • Li Xiaoya — Senior martial brother, closest friend, and sworn brother regarded as closer than flesh and blood. Their competitive sparring accompanies repeated mutual rescues, shared secrets, and coordinated battles 486 1786 1801 1802 1925 1298.
  • Buddha Xuanmen — Master and the only person to accept Dong as a disciple. Their relationship combines discipline and teasing with deep affection; Dong repeatedly seeks news during Xuanmen’s dangerous recovery 146 995 998 1224.
  • Zhang Cai — Senior cultivator entrusted with Dong’s care while Xuanmen is in seclusion. Their association is marked by scolding, complaints, and destructive mischief, though they continue the Zhang Family murder investigation together 409 460 487.
  • High Person Qianshan — Senior sect authority who entrusts Dong with reconnaissance and covert missions and helps keep his Great Void breakthrough secret 1074 1254 1287.
  • Liu Xian’er — Fellow disciple close to Dong through Li Xiaoya. Dong informs Li of her secret searches for him, later fights to protect her during qi deviation, and undertakes a search for treatment materials 487 1224 1565 1575 1579.
  • Zhang Hong — Fellow disciple close to him through Li Xiaoya; her disappearance contributes to his distress during the reception-envoy conflict 1224 1565.
  • Second Better — Friend and artifact refiner who made the Moonlight Crescent Saber for him. Dong later promises to arrange spirit stones for Second Better’s Soul Space Teleportation Device 2207.
  • Daode Daoist Patriarch — Protector who hides Dong following his Dragon Race raids and keeps his special identity secret under a sworn pact 1925 1974 1975.
  • Immortal Sovereign — Teaches Dong a Spatial Law Divine Ability and seeks Li Xiaoya’s assistance with Dong’s planned trial 2207 2266.
  • Xiao Qian — Ally in the Bright Star Realm who helps defeat the Light-Winged Dragon King, supports Dong’s infiltration plan, and returns his damaged saber 2275 2289.
  • Fu Yuchen — Betrayer who steals Dong’s body in an attempt to obtain his identity and Child of Light bloodline. Dong survives, and Li Xiaoya later hands him the imprisoned Fu Yuchen 2264 2266 2289.
