Background / History
In his previous life, Tang San was an obscure Outer Sect disciple of the Tang Sect. He secretly learned the sect’s orthodox arts by stealing them, but could not openly display that knowledge. After crossing over to the Douluo Continent, he retained his knowledge of the Tang Sect’s techniques 15 17 20.
Tang San grew up without experiencing a mother’s love, while Tang Hao’s poverty left him largely unnoticed. He initially knew little about Ah Yin or the inheritance she had left him 5 15. Tang Hao secretly followed him at the academy and during his first soul-ring hunt, a form of protection Tang San only discovered when his father emerged from hiding 2 5 17.
Shortly before his first appearance, Yu Xiaogang recognized his twin martial souls and persuaded him to become a disciple. Tang San accepted him as a learned authority, unaware that Yu Xiaogang intended to use him to validate his theories 1.
Appearance
Tang San is described as diminutive and scrawny, markedly smaller than Chen Ci after the latter’s bloodline-induced growth spurt 15 19.
- Blue Silver King manifestation: Thicker stems and broader, heavier leaves than ordinary Blue Silver Grass, giving it a stronger appearance 16.
- Entanglement vines: Described as purple when deployed during the academy duel 18.
Personality
Tang San is deeply deferential to his teacher. After Yu Xiaogang’s public humiliation, he volunteers to defeat Chen Ci to prove the teacher’s theories correct. Even when Chen Ci demonstrates that binding is an innate ability of Blue Silver Grass, Tang San suppresses his doubts and reassures himself that Yu Xiaogang must possess genuine expertise 3 18 19.
He enjoys public recognition and anticipates using Chen Ci’s defeat as a stepping stone to personal glory. His confidence repeatedly rests on the supposed superiority of his martial souls, though Chen Ci’s presence intimidates him before their duel begins 15 16 19.
Tang San regards the Blue Silver Emperor awakening and his mother’s keepsake as things that should have belonged to him. After seeing Ah Yin beside Chen Ci, he assumes she has been coerced despite her declared loyalty. His resentment escalates into murderous intent, culminating in a concealed attack during their sparring match 17 18 19.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver King
An evolved form of Tang San’s original Blue Silver Grass, awakened through the bloodline inherited from Ah Yin 16 17.
- Produces stronger-looking vegetation with thicker stems and heavier leaves 16.
- Can spread outward under his control for others to examine 16.
- Is subordinate to the Blue Silver Emperor: when Chen Ci summons his martial soul, Tang San’s Blue Silver King slips out of his control, prostrates itself, and trembles 16 17.
- Does not grant Tang San the Blue Silver Emperor status he and Tang Hao had sought 17.
First Soul Skill: Entanglement
A control-type skill obtained from Tang San’s 423-year-old Mandala Snake soul ring 15 18.
- Sends Blue Silver King vines through the surrounding water to bind Chen Ci 18.
- Initially prevents Chen Ci from breaking free by struggling 18.
- Fails to keep Chen Ci restrained once he enhances himself with Golden Dragon Body 18.
- Its value is challenged when Chen Ci demonstrates binding without activating a soul ring 18.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San’s second martial soul and a major source of his confidence. Yu Xiaogang identifies it as the world’s greatest tool martial soul 1 17.
- Its manifestation accompanies a burst of force that frees Tang San from the Blue Silver Emperor’s binding 19.
- Used for direct, strength-based attacks after his control tactics fail 19.
- Cannot overcome Chen Ci’s combination of Golden Dragon Body and the Golden Dragon Spear 19.
- Publicly exposed in anger during the duel, revealing his twin martial souls to the spectators 19.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A movement technique used to approach Chen Ci and evade attacks 18.
- Allows Tang San to narrowly dodge a two-meter water blade 18.
- Severely hindered by Chen Ci’s waist-deep water, leaving him unable to close the distance effectively 18.
Tang Sect Arts and Hidden Weapons
Tang San retains the Tang Sect’s Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record and considers its teachings a central advantage beyond his martial souls 17 19.
- Possesses fighting techniques described as more refined than Chen Ci’s, though that advantage cannot overcome their strength disparity 19.
- Crafts and deploys a concealed sleeve-arrow weapon 19 20.
- Invokes the Treasure Record’s principle of striking first against an established enemy to justify attacking Chen Ci 19.
Perception of Ah Yin
Tang San can perceive Ah Yin’s manifested presence through their shared bloodline, even when ordinary people cannot see her 18.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — His first hidden weapon, painstakingly crafted and concealed in his sleeve. It strikes Chen Ci’s chest but rebounds from his golden scales; Chen Ci subsequently crushes it into powder 19 20.
- Intended inheritance: Blue Silver Emperor Right Leg Bone — A hundred-thousand-year soul bone Ah Yin had left for him. Tang San never receives it: Ah Yin gives it to Chen Ci before Tang Hao brings him to the storage chamber 4 5.
Relationships
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher whom Tang San initially reveres as a sage. Tang San’s proposed duel is intended to vindicate his theories; he remains loyal even after briefly questioning the usefulness of Entanglement 1 3 18 19.
- Tang Hao — Father and covert protector. Helps awaken his Blue Silver King, urges him to kill Ah Yin’s master, and ultimately rescues him from Chen Ci 2 6 17 20.
- Ah Yin — Mother and source of his Blue Silver Empress bloodline. She relinquishes her ties to father and son to follow Chen Ci, later warning Tang San not to oppose her lord 5 17 18.
- Chen Ci — Fellow student who becomes his rival and then a personal enemy. Tang San blames him for losing his hoped-for awakening, inheritance, and mother; their duel ends with Tang San defeated and nearly killed after attempting a lethal hidden-weapon attack 15 17 19 20.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Enrollment and the Challenge to Yu Xiaogang
Yu Xiaogang initially plans for Chen Ci to acquire support skills and assist Tang San, whose Clear Sky Hammer he considers the more promising martial soul. Chen Ci challenges this arrangement and the proposed soul-ring choices 1.
When Chen Ci’s bloodline pressure causes Luo Sanpao to turn its attack against its own master, Tang San and Yu Xiaogang are knocked unconscious. After recovering, Tang San promises to defeat Chen Ci once both acquire their first rings 2 3.
First Soul Ring and Lost Inheritance
Tang San obtains his first soul ring while Chen Ci uses Tang Hao’s absence to acquire Ah Yin’s legacy. Tang Hao then takes Tang San to the chamber behind the waterfall near Holy Soul Village, where they discover that both Ah Yin’s Seed of Life and the right leg soul bone are gone 4 5.
Ah Yin’s remaining message tells them she has given both to her new master. Tang San agrees to his father’s demand that he find and kill that master, then undergoes an awakening that produces the Blue Silver King rather than the hoped-for Blue Silver Emperor 5 6 17.
Academy Duel and Rescue
Tang San enters the public duel expecting to vindicate Yu Xiaogang and overwhelm Chen Ci with the Blue Silver King. Instead, his martial soul submits to Chen Ci’s Blue Silver Emperor. Ah Yin’s appearance beside Chen Ci makes the dispute personal, and Tang San attacks 15 16 17 18.
Entanglement briefly restrains Chen Ci, but Tang San is subsequently bound, slapped with a water-formed hand, and forced to reveal the Clear Sky Hammer. Unable to win through strength or technique, he fires his Silent Sleeve Arrow at Chen Ci’s chest 18 19.
The failed hidden-weapon attack prompts Chen Ci to attempt to kill him. Tang Hao intervenes, frees Tang San, and escapes with him after Bibi Dong arrives to protect Chen Ci 20.
