The daemons around Victor and Evan grew vastly more powerful.
The daemon before Evan rivaled a Siege Tank in size. Several other daemons stood on its back, attacking him from above.
He saw a naked daemon seize a long-tailed daemon and forcibly tear out its long, black, pointed tail. It flourished the tail like a whip, then lashed it through the air, trying to bind Evan.
He saw the beast open its enormous mouth. Each pointed tooth was made of gold, diamond, or jade, rendered especially hard by the power of the Warp.
He saw a lesser daemon sitting inside the beast's mouth, greedily counting gold coins. Those coins were actually growing out of the coating on the daemon's tongue.
The lesser daemon plucked a coin from the tongue covered in "coins all over the floor," licked it greedily, then tossed it behind its backside and kept pulling out other treasures. The saliva-covered coin seemed to receive some nourishment; when it landed back on the tongue, it grew larger and took root.
When the open mouth caught sight of the gleaming golden Evan, an unspoken terror began to roam through it. The lesser daemon shrieked and tried to flee, but when it saw the coins on the ground smoking white and disappearing, the miser's whole body bristled. It lunged at Evan to fight him to the death.
Evan's blade was holding off the beast and its "riders." He had not expected another lesser daemon, and he had no hand free to deal with it.
The lesser daemon pounced, clung to Evan's head, and began scratching him with both claws.
Evan had the simplest weapons of any warrior on the field: a Cross Sword and an Ion Pistol. The Combat Knife on his leg had already vanished somewhere.
But Evan gave
