Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Suppressed psychic talent 3 Despite Malcador’s suppression, intuitively locates Malak, senses space, and briefly alters local time, allowing him to land a sparring hit on a Custodian.
Developing martial skill and psychic empathy 4 Can last three rounds against Malak despite his frail mortal body. Experiences a dying Thunder Warrior’s emotions and memories; his growing power becomes increasingly difficult to suppress.
First vast psychic storm 7 Stops enemy weapons, reshapes terrain and weather, and destroys a giant war fortress. Exhaustion leaves him asleep for a month; Malcador agrees to teach him control.
Empowerment by the Four Powers 13 Accepts Chaos power and training to prevent the Emperor’s foretold fate. Competing impulses enter his mind, alongside a previously unnoticed golden power.
Arena-trained combatant 15 Learns techniques from Aeldari, Orks, and humans while fighting through eight arenas. His Emperor-empowered Chainsword makes even Bloodthirsters reluctant to challenge him.
Demonstrated restorative blood 43 Applies blood from a cut finger to Bals’s Dreadnought, rapidly restoring the dying warrior’s vital signs.
Demonstrated extreme regeneration 55 Shoots off his own palm and regrows it. Uses organs from his body as the basis for proposed Astartes modifications.

Universe-forming release 251 Throws himself into the Well of Eternity. His unchecked power destroys everything and supplies the energy of a new cosmos, whose development is shaped by his memories.

Appearance

  • Childhood: Small and physically frail, standing below a Custodian’s chest; usually wears white robes 2.
  • After awakening: Has powerful muscles, black hair resembling the Emperor’s, and a resolute gaze 25.
  • Usual clothing: Continues wearing distinctive white robes as an adult. His early robe bears a golden eagle capable of driving away manifestations of the Four Powers 9 40 50.
  • Underhive disguise: Replaces his robes with filthy clothes and covers his face with dust and machine oil, making him difficult for Horus to recognize 50.
  • Later impairment: Is blinded after an encounter with the God-Emperor’s presence, but continues governing and confronting visiting Primarchs 134 138.

Personality

Bona’s earliest ambition is to help his father rather than remain a protected dependent. He resents confinement, asks to undergo genetic enhancement, and persists until Malak agrees to train him. Malcador teaches him to seek cooperation through sincerity rather than rank or commands 2 3.

His compassion repeatedly directs his work. He searches for a cure for the Thunder Warriors, personally experiences the lives of Hive City workers, and insists that ordinary people are the foundation of human civilization. His warmth encourages strangers to confide in him, while praise and romantic attention can leave him embarrassed 8 10 50 51.

That compassion does not make him gentle in the exercise of power. He threatens Antonia and his successors with death, executes rebellious nobles, and imposes punitive transformations on defeated Necron Overlords. He justifies radical methods as necessary for humanity’s survival, including cooperation with Chaos and xenos 53 57 184.

Bona resists pleasure, acclaim, inherited glory, and supernatural promises of rest. Nevertheless, his determination frequently becomes self-neglect: he overworks, uses his body in experiments, and injures himself to escape illusions. Guilt over Malak, Malcador, and the Emperor repeatedly appears in dreams and hostile doubles of himself 15 52 55 154 168 231.

Abilities & Skills

Psychic Power

Bona’s psychic talent manifests even while suppressed; Malcador compares him to a miniature Warp entity walking the material world 3.

  • Spatial and temporal manipulation: Finds hidden people by intuition, briefly alters local time, freezes incoming ammunition, and later accelerates his own time while reconstructing a ship 3 27 230.
  • Telekinesis: Crushes weapons, dismembers a war fortress, restrains Perturabo, and disables Skitarii and concealed defenses 7 27 53 138.
  • Lightning and environmental destruction: Calls down lethal lightning and reshapes ground, mountains, magma, and glaciers during his first major outburst 7.
  • Empathic perception: Experiences a dying warrior’s memories and emotions; later perceives souls and otherwise faint Warp beings 4 113.
  • Dream influence: Targets Yvraine through her dreams as part of his arrangement with Slaanesh 42.
  • Warp suppression: His released white-light field destroys daemonic opposition and suppresses the Warp around it 228.
  • Limitations: Early use is crude and catastrophically exhausting. Leaving the Warp weakens his connection to it, while anti-psychic chains nearly rob him of sensation in his limbs 7 28 154.

Martial Arts and Adaptive Learning

Malak provides Bona’s first formal combat training. His later arena victories depend heavily on his ability to learn from opponents rather than simply overpower them 3 15.

  • Learns psychic techniques from Aeldari, applications of strength from Orks, and survival methods from human fighters 15.
  • Combines firearms, swordsmanship, mobility, and psychic attacks against stronger opponents 15 169.
  • Can overpower Daemon Primarchs in later encounters, including Angron and Mortarion 217 234.
  • Is not invulnerable in close combat: Calgar seriously injures him, Fulgrim exploits his hesitation, and Khorne initially defeats him when external powers are removed 67 169 236.

C’tan Object Control and Creation

Magdaleros’s merger grants Bona access to the C’tan’s particle-level manipulation and perceptions 107.

  • Assembles matter into new structures and later combines this authority with the First Pen to rebuild an entire spacecraft 107 230.
  • Blocks Necron command signals, rewrites Amarkun’s logic, and prevents backup bodies from activating if their current bodies are destroyed 107.
  • Senses other instances of the merged C’tan, including those associated with Mars and Holy Terra 107.
  • Detects the deteriorating condition of a World Engine through the merged fragment 201.
  • Creates weapons on demand, but these are not necessarily divine-quality armaments; Khorne exploits a hidden crack to break one during their duel 236.

Regeneration and Restorative Blood

  • Restores Bals from a critically failing condition by placing his blood against the Dreadnought 43.
  • Regrows a palm after shooting it off during a laboratory demonstration 55.
  • Considers healing Guilliman’s Chaos-tainted wound with his blood, but declines because Nurgle might exploit the procedure to corrupt him 65.
  • Receives a separate, vision-linked restoration from his younger self during the duel with Khorne 237.

Genetics and Biological Engineering

  • Diagnoses the Thunder Warriors’ damaged nervous systems and unstable genes, then develops a treatment that restores Scher’s sanity and memories 9 10.
  • Improves genetic stability and vitality at the cost of some strength and considerable reaction speed 10.
  • Proposes replacing the Astartes’ Omophagea and gene-seed storage gland, using cloned bodies to mass-produce gene-seed 55.
  • Designs a Thunder Warrior-derived Gene Keystone for stability, compatibility, and Warp resistance, alongside four additional organs derived from his body 55.
  • Offers to perform Amarkun’s conversion to a living body and oversees the broader fulfillment of Szarekh’s wish for the Necrontyr 156 184.

Administration and Strategy

  • Applies his childhood education under Malcador to government work, reviewing accumulated major documents in two days after returning from an absence 109.
  • Expands the Dawn Fleet by dividing crews between ships, helping secure a decisive victory at Hexen 78.
  • Exploits the T’au’s growing reliance on automated forces through a hostile intelligence developed with the Dark Mechanicum 130.
  • Proposes using the Staff of Eternal Glory as bait to draw Imotekh’s forces away from their Dolmen Gates 179.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Imperial Chainsword — His recurring weapon from the Chaos arenas onward. Its golden Aquila becomes imbued with the Emperor’s power, theoretically allowing permanent harm to Warp daemons 14 15 34.
  • Bolt weapons — Uses a boltgun to finish an Ork Warboss and carries a Bolt Pistol during the Commorragh operation 15 40.
  • Power Sword — Used to cut off two of Fulgrim’s arms during their duel 169.
  • Book of Omniscience — A white-covered compendium marked with a six-pointed star and Aquila. Contains genetic procedures, agricultural knowledge, ancient weapon information, and Warp-related material; some passages appear to change 8 9.
  • Blank Shield — Acquired to suppress his own power despite the intense discomfort it causes him 30.
  • Blackstone psychic suppression array — Specially made equipment worn as his continually swelling psychic power becomes harder to contain 154.
  • Staff / Scepter of Eternal Glory — Given by Szarekh; contains the Necrontyr homeworld and signifies supreme rulership over the Necrontyr 156.
  • First Pen — An unfamiliar power associated with perception, analysis, and understanding, which he combines with Creation 230.
  • Silver Warblade — Created after his restoration and used to defeat and behead Khorne 237.

History

Protected Childhood and the Unification Wars

Bona grows up under the Emperor’s protection, accompanied around the clock by twelve Custodians and eight Sisters of Silence. Even sleep offers little privacy: two Custodians remain inside his room. He calls the guards “big corn cobs” after discovering the ancient crop in archival records 2.

Frustrated that protection prevents him from helping others, Bona asks Malcador how to learn to fight. He repeatedly seeks out Malak, brings gifts, and eventually earns training by winning a test with a wooden stick. His uncanny success alerts Malcador to abilities that should be impossible for a physically ordinary boy 2 3.

The Emperor eventually permits him to visit the front. There, Bona experiences a dying Thunder Warrior’s suffering and offers his eighteen Custodians to help the collapsing northern line. His subsequent psychic storm destroys the Nordic war fortress, but only four of those Custodians survive; the accompanying Astartes recruits and Thunder Warriors are almost entirely lost 4 7.

Saving the Thunder Warriors

Confined again to the Himalazian Mountain Base, Bona searches for a way to prevent the Thunder Warriors’ deterioration. The Book of Omniscience supplies apparent genetic-modification knowledge, though its supernatural passages make him question its reliability 8.

He secretly examines a dead warrior and develops a treatment with Dakan’s assistance. Scher’s recovery restores his identity and ability to serve, despite reduced combat performance. The Fifth Company pledges itself to Bona, and Malcador’s report leads the Emperor to tear up the order to execute uncontrollable Thunder Warriors 9 10.

Chaos Training and the Heresy

Tzeentch shows Bona a vision of the Emperor wounded by a traitorous son and confined to the Golden Throne. Desperate to prevent it, Bona accepts the Four Powers’ offer of training and strength, intending to kill the future traitor. Meanwhile, Horus learns that Bona was widely respected as the Emperor’s earlier son and likely heir, provoking his jealousy 13.

Bona trains in Khorne’s arenas and passes through Slaanesh’s Six Rings without yielding to their temptations. A Lord of Change later presents the Microcosmic Galaxy, claiming that history repeatedly converges on the same outcome and that Bona alone can destabilize its fixed pattern 14 15 23.

During the fighting, Bona appears as an enormous daemon and fires himself from a Macro-cannon onto the Vengeful Spirit. Later accounts connect his intervention to the Heresy’s outbreak, while his nightmares accuse him of killing Malak and destroying the Emperor’s dream. He eventually accepts responsibility for his part in the tragedy 22 25 52 231.

Awakening in the Forty-First Millennium

Bona awakens from his coffin after ten thousand years and learns that the date is 982.M41. Dakan’s warriors recognize him, and Inquisitor Arlith joins the group as he sets out to discover what the Imperium has become 25.

Horus’s surviving soul has taken refuge within him and claims to have protected his sleeping body. Bona secures Nurgle’s help to restore Horus’s original body, explicitly refusing any additions. Learning about the Ecclesiarchy further alienates him from the present Imperium, whose practices contradict the Imperial Truth he remembers 25 26 28.

Gathering a New Following

Bona bargains with Slaanesh for assistance in Commorragh. In return, he agrees to make Yvraine and Roboute Guilliman fall in love, initially unaware that Guilliman is a Primarch in stasis. The mission also rescues Bals, whom Bona later revives with his blood 31 34 43.

After returning Bals to Huron, Bona negotiates permission to recruit Astartes and obtain a fleet capable of conquering a Forge World. Roughly two thousand warriors accept his invitation to serve humanity without promised pay, plunder, or glory 45 46.

Tarankd and the Thunderhawk Empire

After seizing a Hive City, Bona grants Colonel Sakot a three-month trial to judge his rule. Rather than immediately reorganize the population from above, he lives among Underhivers, factory workers, and Mid Hive worshippers 50 51.

His Human Codex proposes resettlement, ecological restoration, welfare, and industrial development. He also recruits Antonia into the Black Adeptus Mechanicus through a combination of technological opportunity, argument, and explicit threats 51 53.

Over four years, Tarankd’s Hive City is dismantled, settlements and factories are built, and living conditions improve. Tarankd declares independence; Bona suppresses Chaos and noble rebellion, and Sakot accepts his invitation to build the Dawn Army 57.

A visit to Macragge strengthens Bona’s belief that competent government and better lives can reduce rebellion and Chaos worship. He nevertheless continues fulfilling Slaanesh’s bargain, directing Teresa to influence Guilliman through soul-to-soul contact while disguised as Yvraine 65 68.

Expansion and Escalating Power

The Dawn Fleet secures Hexen against an Imperial expedition. Later, Bona merges with Magdaleros while escaping Necron confinement, acquiring new control over matter and machines 78 107.

He resumes expansion toward the T’au while agreeing to support Ultramar against Nurgle. During the T’au campaign, his restraint conceals a plan to turn the enemy’s automated military against itself using an intelligence that cannot be switched off 109 130.

His rising power brings worsening fatigue, psychic trials, blindness, and the need for blackstone suppression. Despite these problems, he continues directing major weapons projects and refuses Perturabo control of the Planet Annihilator because of his temperament 113 134 138 154.

Primarchs and the Necrontyr

Fulgrim’s attack ends in both combatants gravely wounded. Within the ensuing illusions, Bona recovers his identity through the Book of Omniscience and confronts Uranikore, the ancient daemon associated with Fulgrim’s possession. Fulgrim subsequently appears under Bona’s authority and is ordered into the Redemption Legion 169 170 171 173.

Szarekh relinquishes the Scepter of Eternal Glory to Bona and requests permission to leave in self-imposed exile. Bona later crushes a Necron rebellion and forces defeated Overlords into living-body conversion without replacement bodies, condemning them to die within a century 156 184.

Bona also subdues Angron and enters his inner battlefield using the Book of Omniscience and psychic power. Angron subsequently joins Fulgrim in the Redemption Legion 217 219.

The Chaos Trials and Final Duel

Bona leads a coalition of eleven Primarchs and human, Aeldari, and Necron forces against the Black Legion. After clearing their path with his formerly restrained psychic power, he enters a Warp Rift and leaves the coalition to continue the assault 228.

Slaanesh tests him with visions of an ideal Imperium and a loving family, exposing his longing for a better society and his guilt over his lost childhood. He acknowledges the blame but recalls the Emperor’s warning not to become consumed by revenge or remorse 231.

Khorne’s final trial removes external powers and pits them against each other as two ordinary souls. Initially defeated and mutilated, Bona receives strength from his younger self, returns to battle, and beheads Khorne. He awakens to find the Blood God’s Sanctuary abandoned and the Brass Throne empty 236 237.

The Second Siege and the Well of Eternity

During the Second Siege of Terra, Bona entrusts Dakan with stopping Thunderhawk’s militarized society from consuming humanity. He explains that the war machine he built for survival must eventually stop, even if restraining its leaders requires purges 247.

Overwhelmed by competing Chaos powers, Bona reaches the Well of Eternity and throws himself in seeking rest. His released power becomes a new universe. When his memories awaken, they shape its civilizations and wars until history again reaches the Emperor’s Great Crusade 251.

Government and Reforms

Policy / Project Purpose and implementation
Human Codex Proposes moving Hive City populations to Wasteland Worlds, developing colonies over ten years, restoring ecosystems, and providing welfare with Mechanicus assistance 51.
Legion Code of War Defines Astartes as members of humanity, obliges them to protect citizens, penalizes unnecessary civilian sacrifice, and places them under the Departmento Munitorum. Horus is its principal author 51.
Black Adeptus Mechanicus Permits controlled use of forbidden technology and requires members to share half their exclusive knowledge and technology 53.
New Astartes Project Seeks mass-produced gene-seed and revised organs that improve stability, regeneration, emotional understanding, and rational judgment 55.
Dawn Army Established with Sakot’s assistance to defend humanity and provide a hopeful future rather than merely uphold existing Imperial authority 57.
Commissariat reform Requires Commissars to gain frontline experience so they can exercise battlefield judgment and maintain cohesion rather than simply enforce doctrine 113.
Technological controls Rejects proposals involving uncontrolled weapons, daemons, and expendable mortal lives, while supporting major projects such as psychic broadcasting and a planet-sized weapon 101.
  • Contradictory risk tolerance: Despite his earlier rejection of uncontrolled weapons, Bona later develops a machine-infecting intelligence with no shutdown mechanism 101 130.
  • Militarization: Thunderhawk’s education, propaganda, military benefits, and war culture mobilize enormous numbers of recruits; veterans worry that simplified enemy portrayals leave them overconfident 113.
  • Recognition of the danger: Bona ultimately orders Dakan to restrain this system, acknowledging that endless mobilization could destroy the humanity it was meant to protect 247.

Relationships

  • The Emperor — Father and original inspiration for Bona’s service. His foretold suffering drives Bona toward Chaos training; memories of his affection and counsel remain central to Bona’s resistance against temptation 2 13 231.
  • Malcador — Teacher and guardian, addressed as “Grandpa Malcador.” Educates Bona, suppresses his early psychic power, and guides his pursuit of martial training. Bona fiercely defends his memory 2 3 109 234.
  • Malak — Custodian combat instructor, addressed as “Uncle Malak.” Reluctantly agrees to train him; Bona’s later guilt includes killing Malak when the Custodian tried to bring him to his senses 3 52 231.
  • Valdor — Protective Custodian commander whose duty to safeguard Bona repeatedly conflicts with Bona’s willingness to endanger himself for civilians 3 179.
  • Dakan — Thunder Warrior captain, early research accomplice, and enduring follower. Bona eventually calls him the person he trusts most and charges him with preventing humanity’s self-destruction 10 25 247.
  • Horus — Rival turned companion and adviser. His soul shelters inside Bona before receiving a restored body; their relationship develops into teasing familiarity, strategic cooperation, and Horus’s concern for Bona’s self-destructive habits 13 25 26 51 55.
  • Khorne — Patron, combat guide, and final opponent. Values Bona’s resolve and tests whether his worth survives the removal of borrowed power; Bona ultimately defeats and beheads him 14 236 237.
  • Tzeentch — Exploits Bona’s fear for the Emperor by showing him the Heresy and offering strength. His influence is already associated with Bona’s psychic development before the offer 8 13.
  • Slaanesh — Tempter and bargaining partner. Supplies Teresa in exchange for manipulating Yvraine and Guilliman’s feelings, then later tests Bona through visions of society and family 31 231.
  • Nurgle — Restores Horus’s body at Bona’s request. Bona nevertheless fears Nurgle could exploit his blood to corrupt Guilliman 26 65.
  • Arlith — Ordo Originatus Inquisitor and uneasy ally. Observes Bona’s willingness to use Chaos and xenos power, questions his ideals, and helps oversee construction while he is away 25 43 51.
  • Teresa — Keeper of Secrets supplied by Slaanesh. Assists Bona’s dream manipulation and impersonates Yvraine during the attempt to influence Guilliman 31 42 65.
  • Antonia — First Fabricator-General of the Black Adeptus Mechanicus. Initially coerced into joining, later cooperates with Bona on major technological and military projects 53 101.
  • Colonel Sakot — Initially monitors Bona as a potential Chaos threat. Tarankd’s transformation persuades him to join and help build the Dawn Army 50 57.
  • Roboute Guilliman — Subject of Bona’s bargain with Slaanesh and a model for effective government. Bona admires the enduring prosperity produced by Guilliman’s laws 31 65.
  • Magdaleros — C’tan fragment who becomes Bona’s symbiotic source of object control. Merges with him partly to avoid being consumed by stronger versions of itself 107.
  • Szarekh — Entrusts Bona with Necrontyr sovereignty and the restoration of his people to living bodies, then leaves to pursue atonement 156.
  • Slaaneshi — Elven herbalist encountered during a vivid dreamlike episode. Offers companionship and peace, but Bona leaves to pursue a responsibility he cannot remember 172.
