Background / History

Recruitment and Early Reputation

Wang Ziling’s parents died early. According to a story relayed by Old Meat from the steward who recruited him, Ziling returned to his village after a two-year absence and poisoned its inhabitants the following day, sparing neither adults nor children. The alleged death toll exceeded one hundred. The steward reportedly brought him to the Wang Household to fulfill his quota for finding mortals with immortal roots 27 28.

Within little more than ten days of arriving, Ziling joined a group of outside disciples. In less than half a year, he became their adviser, devising malicious tricks. Wang Yan fell into his traps several times and came to hate him 4.

Back Mountain Trial

Ziling obtained information about medicinal herbs on a mountain peak, collected the herbs, and waited to ambush exhausted disciples climbing toward them. When Wang Yan arrived, he demanded his herbs and magic artifact. Their fight left Wang Yan with a burned shoulder and Ziling with a neck wound. Unwilling to risk his life against Wang Yan’s desperate sword attacks, Ziling withdrew and proposed friendship 4.

He offered a Qi-Returning Pill as an apology, then directed Wang Yan toward more herbs. Wang Yan discarded the pill rather than risk taking it. Soon afterward, Wang Yan discovered a cave containing the corpses of trial participants, including several of Ziling’s associates, and suspected him of murdering them with poison 5 6 28.

Ziling had only pretended to leave. He waited until Wang Yan approached a Century Green Shade Herb and was incapacitated by drugged mist. After beating and robbing him, Ziling drove Wang Yan’s own short sword into his dantian, then threw him from a cliff into a lake. He departed without remorse, believing he had disposed of his rival 7.

Rise Within the Wang Household

Ziling returned from the trial with the largest collection of spirit herbs. His performance won the Clan Chief’s favor, admission to the Inner Clan, and acceptance as her disciple. His rapid cultivation advancement made Wang Yan increasingly wary of confronting him 27 29.

With the patriarch’s approval, he entered the mountain’s Cultivation Chamber. His newfound value to the household protected him from being traded away: the Ma Family’s Third Elder failed to purchase him even for three hundred Spirit Stones 28.

Framing and the Ma Family Conflict

Wang Yan retaliated indirectly by changing the name on his own unprotected identity token to “Wang Ziling” and leaving it near evidence connected to the Ma Family’s missing treasure map. He subsequently sold information about Ziling’s cultivation and status to the Ma cultivators 26 29.

When the Third Elder infiltrated the Wang Household, Wang Yan attacked the elder’s companions elsewhere and briefly impersonated Ziling. This strengthened the Ma Family’s belief that Ziling was responsible for their losses, although Wang Yan was the actual attacker 31 32.

Before the Clan Chief, Ziling maintained that he had not left Azure Spirit Mountain since the trial and knew of no offense he had committed against the Ma Family. She ordered him to remain in the Cultivation Chamber, arranged protection, and separately instructed a subordinate to monitor him. Ziling privately vowed to destroy the Ma Family if they continued provoking him 31.

The Ma Clan Chief rejected another immediate attack and instead ordered agents within the Wang Household to watch Ziling and capture him alive whenever he ventured out alone 32.

Cloud Mountain Treasure Land Expedition

The Wang Household sent Ziling to assist the Purple Flame Sect during the Cloud Mountain Treasure Land expedition. The household had considered sending either him or Wang Qing, but chose Ziling because he was an outsider, whereas Wang Qing was a direct descendant and a potential successor to the Clan Chief. Ziling resented the assignment and preferred to exploit the expedition’s disorder for his own benefit 95 202.

Inside the treasure land, he concealed demonic poison beneath a red-petaled spirit medicine. A young cultivator attempting to harvest it inhaled gray mist and became helpless. Ziling dismissed the victim’s antidote as ineffective, burned his head with red-black flames, and took his spirit medicine, Storage Bag, and other belongings. He expressed pleasure in the killing and regretted that the uprooted medicine could no longer serve repeatedly as bait 95.

Fairy Purple Smoke later discovered him spying on the Purple Flame Sect’s party. He presented himself as a trial recruit and asked to join their mission, but she refused and warned him not to follow. She spared him because she considered his apparent ability potentially valuable to the sect. Afterward, Ziling consulted an eerie unseen voice and decided to approach Cloud Mountain from the opposite side, seeking treasure while remaining interested in Purple Smoke 111.

While cultivating in a hidden cave, Ziling’s adviser urged him to avoid further risks and promised two Qi Condensation Pills to help him reach the Core Condensation Realm after the expedition. Ziling refused to abandon an unfinished plan involving a woman, and the voice reluctantly permitted him to proceed while warning him to be careful 117.

Assault on Fairy Purple Smoke and Battle with Wang Yan

Ziling trapped Fairy Purple Smoke with a black-red rune formation and thorny vines that suppressed her ability to resist. The demonic presence within him demanded compensation for its expenditure of energy, and he agreed to give it her flesh and blood. He then used ghost heads to release Passion-Inducing Mist and prepared to sexually assault her 125.

Wang Yan had recognized Ziling’s voice and followed him secretly, resisting the impulse to attack before he had a decisive opening. When Ziling’s attention was fixed on Purple Smoke, Wang Yan ambushed him with Infinite Fire God Needles and Red-Light Fireballs. Needles struck Ziling’s shoulder and thigh, but he deflected most of the continuing attack with phantom black-red claws and a Metal Skull. He recognized Wang Yan and was shocked that the rival he had left for dead was alive 125 126.

Under the Devil Lord’s influence, Ziling’s body displayed early Core Condensation strength and initially overwhelmed Wang Yan. His Metal Skull badly damaged the Ironwood Shield, while his black-flame attacks and blades forced Wang Yan to rely on evasion. Although confident in his superior power, Ziling was surprised by Wang Yan’s increasingly inventive movements and attacks 127.

Wang Yan ultimately drove him toward a passage prepared with more than a dozen fire-blast traps and over a hundred Explosive Fire Talismans. Their detonation collapsed the passage and left Ziling severely injured beneath the rubble. Facing death, he accepted the Devil Lord’s proposal to merge, trusting its assurance that he would remain alive 128.

Ziling emerged from the rubble with all his wounds healed, stronger magic power, demonic horns, and red eyes. His speech at this point was identified as the Devil Lord’s, raising the question of whether it had seized his body. Wang Yan, meanwhile, received the Card Fairy’s possession-assisted power and reversed the battle 129 130.

Wang Yan shattered the Metal Skull, melted Ziling’s black sabers, and burned away his ghost heads and Passion-Inducing Mist. Ziling used Purple Smoke as a distraction by kicking her toward Wang Yan, then attempted to escape through a hole in the hall wall. A final Fire Fist badly injured him and hurled him through the opening, but Purple Smoke’s mist-induced clinging prevented immediate pursuit. Wang Yan later assumed Ziling might have fallen to his death, while acknowledging that he had not seen a corpse 130 135.

Return to Azure Spirit Mountain and Wang Yanyu’s Death

Years after the expedition, Ziling returned secretly to the Wang Household with the Devil Lord. They drained Clan Chief Wang Yanyu of her power, leaving her unable to answer when the Ma Family patriarch, Ma Ang, arrived to confront the household. Ziling complained that the intrusion had interrupted him just short of another advancement. He and the Devil Lord considered fleeing because they expected at best a draw against Ma Ang’s minor Golden Core cultivation 201.

Wang Qing, unaware of Ziling’s concealed return, told Ma Ang that Ziling had been sent to the Purple Flame Sect years earlier and should still be there if alive. Ma Ang demanded that the household produce Ziling within three days and took Wang Qing hostage. Watching in concealment, Wang Yan recognized the confrontation as a lingering consequence of his earlier framing over the Moon-Embracing Purple Mountain Treasure Map 202.

Wang Yan then recognized Ziling moving through a nearby valley and identified his cultivation as great completion of Core Condensation. He and the Card Fairy suspected that Ziling had exploited Wang Yanyu’s cultivation. Rather than confront him directly, Wang Yan sent Ma Ang a voice transmission revealing his hiding place, hoping to have one enemy eliminate the other 203.

In the valley, Ziling and the Devil Lord discussed plundering the household and sacrificing its people, along with Wang Yanyu’s corpse, to create a Blood Demon. Ma Ang discovered them, and Ziling used his Demonization Divine Ability and two Ghost-Head Great Sabers to fight him. Ma Ang gradually gained the advantage and pursued him into the sky 203.

Betrayal of the Wang Household and Apparent Destruction

Ma Ang’s Silver Bell disrupted Ziling’s defenses, and his spear shattered Ziling’s shield and knocked him into the household’s buildings. Unable to escape or win, Ziling attempted to explain that he had neither harmed the Ma Family nor taken its property. He cited his earlier seclusion as evidence that he could not have committed the offenses attributed to him 204.

Ma Ang offered to spare him if he surrendered the disputed property and joined the Ma Family. The Wang elders urged Ziling to remain loyal and even offered to make him Clan Chief, but he declared that he did not care which lineage he belonged to. When Ma Ang showed uncertainty about the accusation, Ziling proposed killing the Wang elders and joining the Ma Family as proof of his sincerity 204.

With Ma Ang’s approval, Ziling swallowed a blood-red pill and attacked the elders. His amplified demonic power shattered their hastily assembled formation, destroyed or scattered their treasures, and allowed him to begin cutting them down. He declared his intention to destroy the entire Wang Household and expressed resentment toward the elders who had sent him into danger during the expedition 205.

Wang Qing unexpectedly returned and struck Ziling with a golden sword ray. A subsequent golden-lightning sword attack overwhelmed Ziling’s skull-shaped treasure, ghostly defenses, and other artifacts, apparently blasting him into nothingness. The attacker was later revealed to be the Wang Household’s Old Ancestor acting through Wang Qing’s body 205 206 207.

The Old Ancestor explicitly identified Ziling as Wang Yanyu’s killer and appointed Wang Qing as the new Clan Chief. Despite the apparent annihilation, black mist subsequently seeped from a rock crevice beneath a cliff and re-formed into the handsome Ziling, revealing that he had survived 207.

Wartime Predation and Recovery

When Lin Nation invaded Cloud Nation, the gravely injured Ziling disguised himself as a Lin Nation cultivator and infiltrated its forces. He secretly killed cultivators from both countries and devoured them to restore his strength through demonic cultivation. The war’s disorder allowed him to operate with little attention, and he expected to recover completely within a few months 277.

His hatred of Wang Yan remained undiminished. He named Wang Yan his lifelong nemesis and vowed to subject him to prolonged torment once his recovery was complete 277.

Ziling was later seen at the Wicked Poison Sect in Lin Nation, where his recovery had benefited from an encounter with the fleeing Nascent Soul of the Dark Cyan Poison Venerable. News of Wang Yan’s growing fame provoked another furious vow of revenge. An unseen voice rebuked his complaints and reminded him that his own recovery had depended on luck 298.

Appearance

  • Handsome, delicate features: His friendly expression makes his apologies appear sincere; his face is again described as handsome at the clan assembly 4 31.
  • Youthful appearance: Roughly twelve during the trial and thirteen or fourteen at the later assembly 5 31.
  • Trap precautions: Wears a strip of cloth over his nose when approaching Wang Yan through the drugged mist 7.
  • Post-fusion appearance: After merging with the Devil Lord, he retains his extraordinarily handsome face but has two demonic horns, a pale complexion, and red eyes 129.
  • Demonized form: Develops a monstrous appearance with ghostlike claws and black, fleshy wings during the Azure Spirit Mountain confrontation 203 205.
  • Reconstituted appearance: Returns to the form of an exceptionally handsome young male cultivator after gathering from black mist beneath a cliff 207.

Personality

Ziling is calculating and patient, preferring a decisive advantage over a fair fight. He retreats when Wang Yan’s swordsmanship makes a direct confrontation dangerous, then replaces aggression with apologies and apparent generosity. Privately, he concludes that Wang Yan’s caution and skill make him a future rival who must not remain alive 4 5.

His cruelty extends beyond practical elimination. While Wang Yan lies helpless, Ziling mocks him with suggestions of skinning or dismemberment, destroys his cultivation, and treats killing a fellow disciple as casually as slaughtering a chicken 7.

He presents a composed, obedient face to authority. At the clan assembly, he remains neither arrogant nor servile and declares unwavering loyalty to the Wang Household. His private threat against the Ma Family reveals the vindictiveness concealed beneath that respectful bearing 31.

His later conduct demonstrates enjoyment of suffering and predatory opportunism. In the treasure land, he savors burning a helpless cultivator to death and treats spirit medicine as reusable bait for further victims. His fixation on Fairy Purple Smoke overrides his adviser’s caution and leaves him distracted enough for Wang Yan to ambush him 95 117 125.

His caution coexists with arrogance when empowered. He initially delights in his overwhelming strength against Wang Yan, but becomes desperate when superior tactics or stronger opponents threaten his life. He accepts fusion with the Devil Lord to survive and later abandons his professed household loyalty when Ma Ang offers an escape from defeat 127 128 204.

Ziling’s affiliations are ultimately subordinate to self-preservation, revenge, and personal advancement. He kills his former master, plans to sacrifice the household, and attacks its elders despite his earlier oath of loyalty. During the war, he preys indiscriminately on both armies and remains consumed by jealousy and hatred toward Wang Yan 203 205 207 277 298.

Abilities & Skills

Fire-Element Cultivation

Ziling practices a fire-element cultivation art and channels magical power directly through his body and weapon 4 7.

  • Produces scorching red light around his iron claw, burning Wang Yan’s shoulder 4.
  • Enhances his speed through forceful steps, crossing several meters rapidly and retreating several dozen feet 4.
  • Channels heat through his foot and strengthens his arm with magical power while tormenting Wang Yan 7.
  • Initially has a weaker cultivation base than Wang Yan; his first ambush relies on Wang Yan’s exhaustion 4.
  • Later produces red-black flames capable of burning a helpless cultivator’s head down to a skull 95.
  • In his Devil Lord-empowered state, releases giant black-flame hands, black-light blades, and close-range black-light blasts 127 128.

Poison and Drugged Traps

  • Uses incapacitating mist to leave Wang Yan unable to move or circulate magical power 6 7.
  • Covers his nose before entering the affected area 7.
  • Is suspected of poisoning his former trial companions and is alleged to have poisoned his home village; the poison’s identity is unknown 6 28.

  • Later plans with the Devil Lord to use the Wang Household’s inhabitants and Wang Yanyu’s corpse in a blood sacrifice to create a Blood Demon. The planned sacrifice is not shown being completed 203.

Devil Lord Possession and Demonization

  • Receives advice and assistance from a sinister voice, later identified as the Devil Lord. Its promised pills, expenditure of energy, and demands for compensation show that the collaboration is transactional 111 117 125 128.
  • His possessed body attains early Core Condensation-level strength during the battle with Wang Yan 127.
  • Produces phantom black-red claws that deflect fiery needles and other incoming attacks 125.
  • Merges with the Devil Lord when near death, healing his wounds and further increasing his power. The Devil Lord’s voice then speaks from his altered body; the precise division of control after fusion is not fully established 128 129.
  • Uses the Demonization Divine Ability to assume a monstrous combat form and challenge a Golden Core cultivator despite his Core Condensation cultivation 203 205.
  • Employs black, fleshy wings for rapid airborne movement and fights with enlarged ghostlike claws and ghost-headed sabers 205.

Survival and Demonic Recovery

  • Survives being badly injured and hurled out of the treasure-land hall, despite Wang Yan’s later assumption that the fall might have killed him 130 135 201.
  • Re-forms from black mist after the Old Ancestor’s attack apparently destroys him. The exact mechanism and limits of this survival ability are not explained 206 207.
  • Restores his strength and cultivation rapidly by killing and devouring cultivators through his demonic cultivation art 277.
  • Transforms into a mass of black-light flame and vanishes from the scene during his wartime recovery 277.
  • Gains further recovery benefits from encountering the Dark Cyan Poison Venerable’s fleeing Nascent Soul; the exact process is not specified 298.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Stolen belongings: Takes Wang Yan’s short-sword magic artifact, medicinal herbs, storage bag, and other valuables 7 11 22.
  • Century Green Shade Herb: Associated with the trap. Wang Yan and Old Meat suspect Ziling consumed it to accelerate his cultivation 27.
  • Red-petaled spirit medicine: Used as bait for a gray-mist poison trap in Cloud Mountain Treasure Land, then collected along with his victim’s possessions 95.
  • Qi Condensation Pills: Two are promised by his adviser as a means of advancing after the expedition; their consumption is not shown in the supplied passages 117.

  • Skull-shaped treasure and other artifacts: Used in his final defense against the Old Ancestor’s golden-lightning sword attack, which overwhelms them. The skull-shaped treasure is not established as the same Metal Skull previously destroyed in the treasure land 130 206.

Relationships

  • Wang Yan — Fellow disciple and mortal enemy. Ziling repeatedly schemes against him, destroys his dantian, and leaves him for dead; Wang Yan survives and later frames him to provoke the Ma Family. They fight directly in Cloud Mountain Treasure Land, where Wang Yan severely wounds him. Wang Yan later reveals his hiding place to Ma Ang, while Ziling continues to call him his lifelong nemesis and vows revenge during his recovery 4 7 26 31 125 128 130 203 277 298.
  • Wang Household Clan Chief / Wang Yanyu — Former master and protector. Accepts him as her disciple, praises his declared loyalty, and orders both protection and surveillance. Ziling later returns with the Devil Lord and drains her power; the Old Ancestor explicitly identifies him as her killer 27 31 201 207.
  • Outside-disciple associates — Initially his companions and beneficiaries of his schemes. Several are later found dead during the trial, with Wang Yan suspecting Ziling’s involvement 4 5 6.
  • Ma Family Third Elder — Attempts to purchase and then pursue him, believing he is connected to the missing map and deaths of Ma relatives 28 31 32.
  • Ma Clan Chief — Orders Ziling watched and captured alive rather than risking another open confrontation with the allied Wang Household 32.
  • Card Fairy — Initially praises his cunning as an asset in the cultivation world, but later warns that he is dangerously vicious. Her suggestion that rapid pill-assisted advancement could destabilize him remains an assessment, not a demonstrated setback. She later helps Wang Yan oppose him, including empowering Wang Yan through possession during their treasure-land confrontation 15 28 29 129 130.
  • Devil Lord — Demonic adviser, power source, and fusion partner. Warns him against unnecessary risks, promises cultivation assistance, and helps subdue Fairy Purple Smoke in exchange for compensation. Ziling agrees to merge with it to survive Wang Yan’s trap; they later cooperate in draining Wang Yanyu and planning a Blood Demon sacrifice 117 125 128 129 201 203.
  • Fairy Purple Smoke — Object of his attraction and later victim of a calculated assault. She initially spares him as a potentially valuable recruit but refuses to let him join her mission. He subsequently restrains and drugs her, intends to sexually assault her, and promises her flesh and blood to the Devil Lord. Wang Yan’s intervention interrupts the attack 111 125 130.
  • Wang Qing — Fellow household disciple whose status as a direct descendant leads the elders to spare him and send Ziling on the dangerous treasure-land expedition instead. Years later, Wang Qing becomes Ma Ang’s hostage over Ziling’s whereabouts. The Old Ancestor uses Wang Qing’s body to interrupt Ziling’s massacre and apparently destroy him 202 205 206 207.
  • Wang Household elders — Former authorities and eventual targets of his resentment. Their decision to send him into danger contributes to his hostility; he later offers to kill them in exchange for Ma Ang’s protection, attacks their formation, and declares his intention to destroy the household 202 204 205.
  • Ma Ang — Ma Family patriarch and Golden Core opponent. Pursues Ziling over accusations stemming from Wang Yan’s framing, defeats him in combat, and then agrees to accept him into the Ma Family if he attacks the Wang elders. Their temporary alignment defeats Wang Yan’s attempt to turn them against each other 202 203 204 205.
  • Wang Household’s Old Ancestor — Identifies him as Wang Yanyu’s murderer and attacks through Wang Qing’s body, apparently annihilating him. Ziling’s subsequent reconstitution reveals that the attack did not permanently kill him 206 207.
  • Dark Cyan Poison Venerable — Ziling encounters the cultivator’s fleeing Nascent Soul, an event that benefits his later recovery. The exact nature of the encounter and any continuing relationship are unspecified 298.

Notable Quotes

“Come now, Senior Brother! We’re all disciples of the same clan. Why should we fight and kill one another? This is only a trial!” 4

“In life, I belong to the Wang Household; in death, I will be its ghost!” 31

“I don’t care which lineage I belong to!” 204

“Wang Yan! You are my lifelong nemesis! Once I, Wang Ziling, recover, I will never let you go! When the time comes, I’ll make you beg for life and be denied, beg for death and be refused!” 277

Trivia

  • Ziling’s destruction of Wang Yan’s dantian indirectly leads to the Immortal Card Artifact replacing it and enabling Wang Yan’s new cultivation path 1 8 9.
  • The apparent identification of the dying Ma youth as “Wang Ziling” in the ambush sequence does not establish Ziling’s death. The following chapter explicitly explains Wang Yan’s impersonation and shows the real Ziling alive before the Clan Chief 30 31.
  • His survival repeatedly overturns apparent victories: Wang Yan does not confirm a corpse after the treasure-land fight, and Ziling later returns; the Old Ancestor’s apparent annihilation is followed by his reconstitution from black mist 130 135 201 206 207.
  • The Wang Household initially values his talent enough to refuse a sale for three hundred Spirit Stones, yet later chooses him for the dangerous treasure-land expedition specifically because he is an outsider rather than a direct descendant 28 202.
  • His declaration of absolute loyalty to the Wang Household contrasts with his later assertion that he does not care which lineage he belongs to and his attempt to destroy the household 31 204 205.
  • His ability to battle Golden Core cultivators does not establish that he has reached the Golden Core Stage: his explicitly reported cultivation is great completion of Core Condensation, and his exceptional combat strength is associated with demonization and external empowerment 203 205 277.
