Two days later.
The blazing sun scorched the earth as the convoy traveled down the deserted road in lonely silence. Here and there, bleached bones lay exposed amid the rampant weeds.
Chu Sheng looked at the road around them, with its scattered traces of human civilization, then at the endless stretch ahead. He could not help asking Captain Hui, "Didn't you say we'd reach a supply point within a couple of days?"
"Why haven't we found one yet?"
"Young man, I know you're anxious, but don't get impatient." Captain Hui gave him an inscrutable look.
"An Xi was right. You ought to carry a fortune-teller's banner and become a charlatan!"
"You! Ah, forget it."
Captain Hui wanted to argue, but then he remembered how confidently he had promised two days ago that they would find a supply point. He really did not have a leg to stand on. He stopped paying attention to Chu Sheng and addressed the others instead.
"The Gas Station isn't far ahead. We should see it tomorrow. Let's try to refuel tomorrow, then pick up some other supplies."
Chu Sheng really was anxious. Although his bicycle had been upgraded into a Sidecar Motorcycle, something even better would make survival easier.
In the apocalypse, aside from awakening a Sequence, the most important thing was not food, but a vehicle.
After all, not everyone was like Chu Sheng. Even half a year into the apocalypse, bleeding hearts still existed. Besides, if you ran out of food, you could always rob someone else.
That father and son had tried to kill Chu Sheng for his food, for instance, and the blond thug had tried to steal his bike.
But with an off-road vehicle like Captain Hui and the others had, none of that would be a problem.
You could sleep right inside it at night. Not only would it shelter you from the elements, but it would also protect you from ambushes, and keeping your food inside would stop others from stealing it.
Thinking about all this, Chu Sheng sighed. Leaning against his Sidecar Motorcycle, he put the dried noodles in his hand into the small pot of boiling water.
Then he drew the Butcher Knife. The black blade with its blood-red fuller flew from his hand, followed by a scream.
"Aaaah!!!"
The sudden scream made everyone preparing lunch instinctively turn to look.
They saw a filthy-looking young woman lying on the ground, clutching a forearm that was now missing a section and howling in agony.
"Of all the people you could steal from, you had to pick me." Shaking his head as he spoke, Chu Sheng walked over to her and retrieved the Butcher Knife, its blade buried completely in the dirt.
Ever since becoming a sacrificial item, the Butcher Knife had become much sharper and better to handle. He had barely put any strength into that throw, yet it had cleanly severed her forearm.
Even the bone visible in the stump had been sliced clean through.
"No! No! I was wrong! Please spare me!" Seeing Chu Sheng approach, the young woman stopped howling. Clearly, she had now remembered how he had killed those three people earlier.
Chu Sheng showed little reaction to her pleas. He merely gave her a shy smile, looking every bit like a cheerful, bashful young man.
"Don't worry. You'll thank me!"
At those words, she scrambled up from the ground and began apologizing and thanking him over and over.
Under the effects of fear and adrenaline, she could no longer feel the pain in her arm at all.
"This apocalypse is so cruel." Beneath the grime on her face, Chu Sheng could make out what she had once looked like.
"Judging by your looks, you must have been a beauty before the apocalypse, right?"
Although he phrased it as a question, his tone was certain.
"Yes, yes! As long as you spare me, I'll do anything!" She nodded frantically.
"How nice... but I don't want to let the apocalypse torment you anymore."
Before he had finished speaking, the Butcher Knife pierced her chest beneath her incredulous gaze. With a slight exertion, Chu Sheng sliced her torso open, exposing the organs within.
Blood splashed onto his face and trickled down under gravity, leaving several bloody streaks.
"If I kill you, the apocalypse won't be able to torment you anymore."
"Really, you should thank me."
Chu Sheng murmured those words, then gave another shy, sunny smile. Yet that "sunny" smile on his face sent a chill through everyone who witnessed the scene.
"That guy is so... mmph!" Li Ling, who was cooking nearby, shuddered at the sight and instinctively started to speak.
But the moment Li Qian heard her, she clapped a hand over her mouth before she could finish.
"Ling, don't say things like that. This is the apocalypse!"
Li Qian signaled her with her eyes and shook her head slightly. Coming to her senses, Li Ling instinctively glanced at Chu Sheng, especially the blood on his face, then shivered and nodded repeatedly.
Zhou Dun was not as cautious as the two of them. After observing them for so many days, he had more or less figured out the personalities of the convoy's Sequence users.
Although Chu Sheng had only recently awakened and they had barely interacted before, Zhou Dun's observations suggested that someone like him posed little danger as long as you did not provoke him.
Chu Sheng might seem ruthless and decisive when it came to killing, but at least he did not slaughter innocent people indiscriminately. Every single person he had killed had provoked him.
"Just don't provoke him, either of you." At that, he thought for a moment, shook his head, and continued, "Actually, forget it. Stay away from him from now on. Leave dealing with him to me."
"Okay!" Li Qian and Li Ling nodded repeatedly.
Meanwhile, at the front of the convoy, Zhu Qing looked toward Chu Sheng with distaste.
"Chu Sheng is way too bloody."
"What? Getting all softhearted?"
Beside Zhu Qing, Old Man Li sipped some liquor from a little cup, hissed at the burn, and looked over.
"No, it's just a bit gory. Couldn't he have simply beaten that thief to death and tossed her out?"
"Then why the hell are you yammering?" Old Man Li clicked his tongue and went back to drinking.
An Xi, who was busy eating on top of a vehicle, had also witnessed the scene. She showed no reaction, however, and simply watched in silence as the rice in her bowl steadily dwindled.
Nothing could interrupt her meal!
"Xixi, isn't that guy disgusting?" A Xin was also holding a bowl of rice. She looked at Chu Sheng, then at the cured pork ribs in her bowl, and suddenly lost much of her appetite.
"I think it's fine," An Xi said from the roof, her words muffled by food. "That guy likes cutting people open."
"You'll probably see it again."
After swallowing the rice in her mouth, An Xi asked, "By the way, what kind of weapon do you want?"
"Huh?" A Xin froze at the question and looked at her in confusion, unsure why she had brought it up.
"That guy can upgrade items. The things he upgrades can hurt Anomalies. I'm planning to get you a weapon so you'll be a little safer."
