Background / History
Six months after the sky shattered, Chu Sheng had escaped Changjiang City, where almost all of its two million residents died. He survived through scavenging and eventually traveled with Zhang Hui’s convoy, whose rules prohibited trouble during migration and left stragglers behind 1.
His distrust of others began during the city’s evacuation. A powerful, kindhearted neighbor protected fleeing survivors, only for those she saved to ambush and kill her at an abandoned factory. They believed consuming an awakened person could grant supernatural abilities. Chu Sheng watched them eat her remains but refused the soup offered to him; the account does not establish that their method worked 50.
Afterward, he separated from those survivors and encountered several convoys. The first he joined required a portion of scavenged supplies but allowed members to leave freely rather than treating them as slaves 50.
Appearance
- Young and handsome: Often presents himself as a cheerful, bashful, apparently harmless young man 17 36.
- Silvery-white hair: His fairly long hair changes color upon awakening Heavenly Craftsman. Zhu Qing identifies this as his apparent Sequence price, which Chu Sheng accepts as “permanent hair dye” 12.
- Crimson eyes: Acquires scarlet eyes after creating Human Eyes, Cat Pupils; his white hair and red eyes become immediately recognizable features 31 35.
- Misleading smile: His shy, sunny expression persists during and after brutal killings, making the contrast especially disturbing to witnesses 2 17.
Personality
Chu Sheng is suspicious, calculating, and intensely survival-oriented. He anticipates ambushes, keeps weapons close, and prefers intimidation to prolonged discussion. Even unconscious, he instinctively reaches for an absent knife and swings when An Xi pokes him 2 6 29.
He responds to theft and attacks with disproportionate, often gruesome violence. Returning his stolen bicycle does not save its thief, and a woman attempting to steal from him is killed after he severs her forearm. He nevertheless insists he is not an indiscriminate murderer: his stated boundary is having a justification tied to survival 2 3 17 35 36.
His business practices are equally calculating. He demands payment upfront, conceals his true capacity, and describes upgrades as unpredictable to preserve favorable trading terms. He treats food, gasoline, liquor, spare parts, and supernatural materials as interconnected resources rather than isolated necessities 11 15 16 22.
His concern for others is selective. He values fellow Sequence Adepts because losing any one of them reduces the convoy’s survival chances, while showing little responsibility toward ordinary strangers. Nevertheless, the convoy’s catastrophic losses affect him, and he later deliberately tries to adopt a more positive, agreeable persona 13 29 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Survival Point Upgrade System
- Item enhancement: Improves weapons, clothing, and vehicles; larger transformations can change an object’s entire form 1 7 23 24.
- Custom specifications: Lets him choose components and properties, including blade sharpness, toughness, vehicle storage, and power systems 7 22.
- Anomaly damage: Weapons upgraded through the system can injure Anomalies, unlike the ordinary weapons Chu Sheng had previously seen used against them 5 11.
- Point acquisition: Injuring and killing Anomalies produces Survival Points, but repeated attacks on the same creature have a reward limit 5 6.
- Material savings: Supplying existing parts reduces upgrade costs. Salvaged batteries, wheels, body panels, and windows help make vehicle transformations affordable 10 22 23.
- Inspection: Uses the ability to examine an electric scooter’s condition before salvaging its batteries 22.
- Constraints: Upgrades consume points and are not an economical replacement for ordinary repairs. He repeatedly cuts comfort features to afford essential functions 7 9 23.
Sequence 9: Heavenly Craftsman
- Sacrificial Item creation: Fuses supernatural materials from Anomalies with ordinary objects 12.
- Further fusion: Existing Sacrificial Items can accept additional materials and gain stronger abilities or improved rankings 33.
- Material-to-material fusion: Human Eyes, Cat Pupils demonstrates that two supernatural materials can also be combined directly 30 31.
- Compatibility assessment: Base-object quality and compatibility with the material influence the result; he advises customers on suitable weapon, shield, garment, and vehicle components 15 16 39 47.
- Recovery requirements: Fusion expends mental energy rather than Survival Points. His recovery interval shortens as his Sequence develops, but excessive use risks exhaustion or fainting 20 34 48.
- Concealed limits: His claim that a fusion requires three or four days of recovery is a business tactic, not his demonstrated recovery interval 15 20.
Sacrificial Item Usage-Cost Exemption
- Items he creates display a hidden attribute exempting Chu Sheng from their usage costs 15 31 34.
- This lets him safely use creations that otherwise demand daily sharpening, fresh blood, self-cursing, or replacement of the user’s eyes 13 15 31 34.
- The exemption is not shown to apply universally to acquired items: he initially considers the traded Black Glove effectively unusable because of its cost 39.
Human Eyes, Cat Pupils
- Crimson vision: Sees the world through a red tint 31 35.
- Mental resistance: Provides resistance to mental attacks under the Blood Moon 31.
- Eye-contact attack: Delivers a mental blow to anyone maintaining eye contact for more than three seconds 31.
- Anomaly detection: Detects nearby Anomalies, including an approaching Black Zombie several hundred meters away 31.
- Material detection: Reveals concentrations of supernatural material within an Anomaly’s body 31.
- Illusion interference: His glowing gaze appears to disrupt the Sun Pattern eyeball Anomaly’s illusion waves, opening a gap around him 42.
Combat and Material Harvesting
- Ambush tactics: Predicts how attackers will collapse his tent and positions his blade to intercept them 2.
- Improvised counterattacks: Conceals and upgrades a second knife mid-fight to surprise the Eerie Cat 5.
- Dissection: Extracts supernatural eyes, organs, claws, fangs, and nails, often after An Xi and Zhu Qing restrain the target 5 25 31.
- Anomaly knowledge: Recognizes black mist as the foundation of an Anomaly’s life; exhausting it kills the creature even without conventional wounds 19.
- Risk management: Avoids stronger enemies and leaves frontline containment to combat specialists when possible 5 31.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
Personal Weapons and Supernatural Items
- Butcher Knife: Originally a rusty, long-strip blade found in a village with a whetstone. Becomes his principal weapon after repeated upgrades 1 7.
- Cat-Claw Butcher Knife: First fused form, ranked 9,633. A black blade with a blood-red fuller and a claw-like extension at the handle; enhances sharpness, toughness, and damage against Anomalies, especially pig-like and cat-like ones 12 13.
- Corpse-Poison Cat-Slaying Knife: Later form incorporating four zombie fangs. Can infect a target with corpse poison and turn it into a controllable zombie. Its daily blood requirement does not apply to Chu Sheng 33.
- Upgraded kitchen knife: Secondary weapon used to bisect the Eerie Cat after a concealed draw 5.
- Human Eyes, Cat Pupils: Sacrificial Item ranked 5,721, made from the Eerie Cat’s scarlet eyes and a childlike Anomaly’s black eyes 30 31.
- Black Glove: Acquired through the inter-convoy trade; grants a 5% strength boost and a perfect fit. Later transferred to Zhu Qing to settle two owed fusions 38 39 40.
Vehicle Line
- Bicycle: His original transport; recovered when its frightened thief returns it 2.
- Sidecar motorcycle: Created from the bicycle for 4,400 Survival Points. Its ten-liter tank initially receives three liters of scavenged gasoline; costly extras are omitted 7.
- Battle-Damaged Pickup Truck: Created for 13,500 points. Uses gasoline and electricity, with a roof-mounted solar panel and approximately 30 kilometers of electric range 23.
- Sacrificial pickup: Gains stability, wear resistance, automatic repairs, and Wild Boar Charge, described as increasing speed by 300%. Its hooved-tire charge later reaches 648 km/h, severely straining the vehicle 39 44.
- Rampage Truck: Adds an enclosed, lengthened cargo box, two extra tires, and a sleeping area above the cab with direct access to the driver’s seat. Rampage transforms its tires into boar hooves and increases speed and ramming force 47 48.
Notable Creations for Others
| Creation | Recipient | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Spear +1 | An Xi | Cutting-edge upgrade costing 200 points; makes her ordinary spear capable of harming Anomalies 11. |
| Stretch shorts | Zhu Qing | A deliberately reduced, 60-point upgrade that enhances only part of his stretch pants 14. |
| White Jade Spear | An Xi | Ranked 6,761; conducts supernatural energy, improves damage against skeletons, and returns from within 50 meters. Requires fresh blood daily 15. |
| Elastic Combat Suit | Zhu Qing | A 500-point upgrade intended to keep his clothing from tearing during giant transformations 24. |
| Black Jade Bone Spear | An Xi | Adds a zombie spine to the White Jade Spear; improves durability and energy conduction, extends return range to 100 meters, and adds delayed poison 33. |
| Bone-Poison Dagger | Zhang Hui | Ranked 3,714; inflicts corpse poison and a curse capable of killing a same-Sequence target within three days after breaching their defenses. Requires its user to curse themselves 100 times daily 34. |
Relationships
- Zhang Hui / Brother Hui / Captain Hui — Convoy leader and guide. Supplies Chu Sheng with gasoline, welcomes him among the Sequence Adepts, commissions the Bone-Poison Dagger, and promotes his crafting services. Later entrusts him with leading the convoy out of a lethal encirclement 9 34 42.
- An Xi — Combat partner and frequent customer. Chu Sheng upgrades and repeatedly fuses her spear; their cooperation is punctuated by insults, bargaining, and teasing. She guards him while he is unconscious but is troubled by his sacrifice of two fleeing men 11 15 28 29 33.
- Zhu Qing — Combat partner and customer. Explains Sequence prices, restrains Anomalies for dissection, and commissions transformation-compatible clothing. Gives up a share of materials after crediting Chu Sheng and An Xi with saving him 12 24 30 31.
- Old Man Li — Supplier and trading partner. Agrees to provide supernatural cherry tomatoes in exchange for baijiu, giving Chu Sheng access to stamina-restoring supplies and potential resale goods 16 36.
- Zhou Dun — Recurring customer and paid helper. Trades equipment for awakening information, performs fuel-related work, and helps rebuild the truck in exchange for material-selection advice. Seeks safety through association without expecting Chu Sheng to protect him 13 22 23 47.
- Li Ling and Li Qian — Zhou Dun’s companions. Participate in trades and errands but fear Chu Sheng’s violence; Zhou advises them to leave dealings with him to himself 13 17 47.
- Li Feifei — Leader of another convoy. Her wind-based perception warns that a “devil” lives in Chu Sheng’s heart, leading her to caution Zhou Qi and Wei Haoran about him 35 36.
- Unnamed awakened neighbor — Former protector whose betrayal and murder shattered Chu Sheng’s trust in human kindness 50.
