The convoy hadn't had anything like a pickup before, so after the Anomalies had hit them once, they had stopped considering driving in.
The danger was one thing; the lack of suitable vehicles was another.
The convoy had no pickups capable of carrying large amounts of supplies. Most of their vehicles were sedans or SUVs.
"In that case, that's great!"
Zhu Qing clapped his hands. "I've been sick of lugging sacks around to collect supplies for ages."
An Xi nodded beside him.
"If it's just one vehicle, we should be fine. We just need to move a little faster."
Seeing that the three had settled on a plan, Captain Hui said, "Then get going!"
"I performed a divination earlier. If we set off again within two hours, the Anomalies pursuing us won't catch up. But if we're still here after two hours, we'll be in danger."
"So we'll wait here for two hours. If you haven't come out by then..."
He didn't finish, but everyone present understood what he meant.
Chu Sheng glanced at him, then at the Small Town nearby. "It's only a small town. As long as there aren't any powerful Anomalies inside, we won't even need an hour to replenish our food and supplies."
"Let's go!"
Zhu Qing and An Xi jumped straight into the bed of his pickup. Chu Sheng started the engine, floored the accelerator, and sped toward the Small Town.
As the three of them left, the other survivors exchanged looks. The Sequence Adepts had driven off. How were they supposed to keep up?
Some of those with cars gritted their teeth, stepped on the gas, and followed.
But others who had cars got out, intending to walk over with everyone else.
Zhou Dun stood with Li Qian and Li Lin, watching the Pickup Truck disappear into the distance. He said nothing, merely tightening his grip on the machete in his hand.
"Brother Zhou, are we going?" Li Lin looked at Zhou Dun, hesitation on her grimy face. "We still have some food, probably enough for another ten days or so. We could replenish our food and supplies next time."
"They've already gone ahead. It'll be more dangerous for us to go in than it was before."
"We're going!" Zhou Dun didn't hesitate. "Ling, this is the apocalypse."
"Our food might last another ten days or so, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get more food and supplies. If we don't go this time, we'll have to go next time. If we don't go next time, we'll have to go the time after that!"
"Okay, I understand." Li Ling nodded. She had only been asking, after all. Before, they had always gone in with the Sequence Adepts. This time, they would have to rely on themselves, and no one knew what dangers might await them.
The three headed toward the Small Town, accompanied by seven or eight others.
As for everyone else...
"Have they lost their minds? They actually dare to go in by themselves. Do they think there's no danger?"
"The food we brought back last time will last a few more days. Without the Sequence Adepts, I'm not going in this time. If we run into an Anomalies, we're dead."
Captain Hui and Old Man Li remained with the convoy, watching these people chatter. Neither spoke, but there was disdain in their eyes.
It was the fucking apocalypse. People who merely muddled through were bound to be weeded out.
By contrast, gathering supplies now was dangerous, but not all that dangerous. After all, Chu Sheng and the other two had gone in first. If there were any Anomalies, they would be the first targets.
More supplies and more food meant a greater ability to withstand risks, and thus a better chance of surviving the apocalypse.
It was simple logic, but many people didn't seem to understand it. Or perhaps they understood and still didn't dare to go.
Meanwhile, Chu Sheng and the other two had already entered the Small Town.
The Pickup Truck gradually slowed, and Zhu Qing and An Xi stood in the bed, watching their surroundings warily.
Just then, an eerie voice reached their ears.
"Come play with me..."
"Play with me..."
Chu Sheng narrowed his eyes at the little boy who had suddenly appeared ahead. The boy held a rotting human head in his arms and stared at them with pitch-black eyes devoid of whites.
His expression never changed, but his voice was steeped in eeriness.
"You little son of a bitch. Next time, I'm upgrading this pickup into a sacrificial item. Then I'll run creepy little shits like you right over!"
Chu Sheng muttered under his breath. Though he badly wanted to run over this Anomalies that looked like a bratty kid, he knew his current pickup couldn't do it.
Upgraded objects could hurt Anomalies, but he had an inexplicable feeling that ramming it would wreck the pickup.
At that moment, An Xi, holding the White Jade Spear, spotted the creature as well. She immediately planted her right foot on the Pickup Truck's roof and launched herself into the air.
A pale golden gleam bloomed over the White Jade Spear. With a slight flick of An Xi's wrist, it shot straight toward the brat Anomalies like an arrow loosed from a bow.
The spear streaked through the air, leaving a pale golden trail of light.
Whoosh!
There wasn't much force behind the White Jade Spear, but imbued with Geng Metal Power, it was incredibly sharp. It pierced straight through the brat Anomalies, then buried its tip in the ground, its shaft humming and trembling.
"A Sequence 9 Anomalies. Not even that strong, really!" An Xi landed beside the brat Anomalies. Watching it struggle to get up, she brought her boot down on its head as a faint golden glow appeared around her foot.
Chu Sheng had already stopped the vehicle. His eyes lit up when he saw that the brat Anomalies could no longer move.
"Aargh! Ah!!"
But before he could celebrate for long, An Xi began pressing down harder on the brat's head. The brat Anomalies let out a piercing scream, and wisps of black vapor seeped from its mouth, nose, and the wound made by the White Jade Spear.
"Wait!" Chu Sheng immediately panicked. Those are all my Survival Points!
"Huh?!" An Xi froze and looked at him in confusion.
"I have a blood feud with the Anomalies. Let me finish it off!" As he spoke, Chu Sheng drew the Butcher Knife from his waist and moved beside An Xi.
Before she could react, the Butcher Knife came straight down, severing the brat Anomalies's head. But Chu Sheng wasn't finished. He gouged out its pitch-black eyes, then chopped off its limbs.
Then he slit open its belly, exposing the writhing black organs inside.
An Xi watched it all with a deep frown, unconsciously withdrawing the foot she had planted on the brat Anomalies's head.
"Aren't you being a little disgusting?"
The creature before them might have been an Anomalies, but its appearance wasn't much different from a human's. Even its organs were the same, aside from their color.
Chu Sheng's actions made her suspect he was a little twisted in the head.
"What do you know? This is how you obtain supernatural materials."
"If circumstances allowed, I'd keep a few Anomalies and harvest supernatural materials from them regularly."
"You're getting into farming now?!" Zhu Qing had been silently watching from the sidelines, but he couldn't keep it together after hearing that.
"What's wrong with farming? We can raise chickens and ducks. Why not Anomalies?"
Chu Sheng continued dissecting the Anomalies as he spoke.
As he removed its organs, the Anomalies grew weaker and weaker. In moments, it dissolved into black vapor and dispersed.
What remained was a beating heart in Chu Sheng's left hand and a pair of pitch-black eyes in his right.
