As he spoke, he looked Chu Sheng up and down, then nodded. "Looks like I was right."
"It's perfectly normal not to know any of this."
"After awakening a sequence, you naturally learn its abilities and its name, but there's still a process involved."
"Take me, for example. When I first awakened, I somehow felt I could tell fortunes. Then, on the second day, I suddenly knew I'd awakened a sequence, and I knew its name too."
"It was only after I learned the sequence's name that my body grew stronger. What you're going through is exactly what happened to me!"
Brother Hui patted Chu Sheng's shoulder as he spoke, then sighed. "With another Sequence Adept, we've got a better chance of surviving."
"Since you've awakened, I should tell you a few things about the convoy."
Chu Sheng said nothing, watching Brother Hui talk away and fill in the blanks all on his own.
Brother Hui didn't mind. He simply continued, "Our convoy doesn't do discrimination or slavery or any of that."
"You already know that. We've run into other convoys lately, and you've seen a bit of how they operate, so I won't go into all that."
Chu Sheng nodded.
That was also why he had stayed with this convoy.
Although the human population had plummeted after the apocalypse, there were still quite a few convoys around, and theirs occasionally encountered others.
Those convoys came in all sorts.
Some practiced slavery, some had established feudal monarchies, and others used democratic systems.
There were even some that centrally allocated all their supplies, though convoys like that were rare. Chu Sheng had only heard about them from people in other convoys.
Their current convoy didn't have nearly as much nonsense going on. The Sequence Adepts stayed out of their affairs, and the survivors had established their own rules.
"Let's leave ordinary people's affairs aside. I'll explain the rules our convoy uses."
Brother Hui glanced toward the Small Town as he spoke and sighed. "The rules among us Sequence Adepts are mutual assistance and fair exchange."
"If you need any supplies, you can trade other supplies for them, as long as both sides think it's a fair deal."
"As for..."
Just as Brother Hui was about to continue explaining, Old Man Li's voice carried over from a short distance away.
"Captain Hui! Time to move!"
Brother Hui's expression changed at that. He sprinted straight toward his vehicle, though he still left Chu Sheng with a final remark.
"We'll talk later. Get ready to pull out!"
Chu Sheng looked toward the Small Town.
More than twenty people were running from that direction.
Behind them were Zhu Qing and An Xi.
Unlike before, they were now carrying two enormous backpacks while still fighting the zombie.
From a distance, it looked as though two backpacks were fighting.
The coffin lid Zhu Qing had been swinging earlier was already partly shattered.
The two of them were buying time for the other survivors.
The survivors behind them could only curse the fact that they hadn't grown two extra pairs of legs.
"Faster! Move faster!"
"Fuck, how is that zombie so terrifying? Even two Sequence Adepts can't beat it!"
"Shit! Just run! Stop talking!"
Chu Sheng tied down everything in his truck bed to keep it from falling out, then drove straight over beside Captain Hui's vehicle.
When he pulled up, Chu Sheng could just make out Captain Hui tossing copper coins inside his vehicle.
The survivors soon reached the convoy, but before they could get aboard, Captain Hui drove off.
The moment his vehicle moved, Old Man Li followed.
Chu Sheng had already driven ahead before Captain Hui's vehicle even started moving.
Watching Chu Sheng drive away from inside his vehicle, Brother Hui's mouth twitched.
"That kid really is afraid of dying!"
Old Man Li, following behind him, couldn't help twitching his lips too.
In all his years, he had never seen anyone so afraid of death.
With the two of them taking the lead, the other vehicles followed. Some survivors even handed over food just to be allowed to cling to a vehicle's roof.
In the distance, Zhu Qing and An Xi breathed a sigh of relief when they saw the convoy moving.
"Xiao Qing, get ready to retreat. Just knock this filthy thing away!"
"Got it!" Zhu Qing's three-meter-tall body stood in front of An Xi, his voice deep and resonant.
Gripping the coffin lid with both hands, he raised it, its leading end already shattered. His muscles bulged, and his veins stood out.
The zombie was already a ragged mess. Zhu Qing had repeatedly knocked it flying with the coffin lid, while An Xi had kept attacking it with her spear. Its clothes had long since been reduced to strips, exposing the shriveled, overlapping folds of black skin beneath.
Despite its battered appearance, the zombie hadn't been injured.
Neither Zhu Qing's nor An Xi's attacks could penetrate its defenses.
"Roar!"
The zombie roared and leaped at Zhu Qing, opening its jaws to suck his blood.
In its eyes, everything around it was food, but the food right in front of it smelled the best and would taste the best.
As the zombie lunged toward him, Zhu Qing brought the raised coffin lid crashing into it, putting all his strength into the blow.
The strike sent the zombie arcing through the air, knocking it all the way into the Small Town.
With the blow landed, neither of them lingered to fight. They turned and ran.
Zhu Qing was fast, covering two or three meters with every stride as he raced toward the convoy, seemingly tireless.
An Xi ran ahead of him, even faster than Zhu Qing, often covering four or five meters in a single step.
Neither looked back, but they could hear the zombie roaring in the Small Town.
The Ironclad Zombie had outstanding defenses, but it wasn't particularly fast. It was a little faster than an ordinary person, but its speed was nothing compared to theirs.
If they hadn't been covering the survivors' retreat, they wouldn't have needed to fight the zombie at all.
"An Xi, we really lost out this time!"
Behind An Xi, Zhu Qing kept running. "I only cleared out four or five shelves. I didn't even get a good look at what I grabbed!"
"Same here!"
The girl's voice was clear and delicate, though a hint of complaint could now be heard in it.
"I never thought we'd run into such a powerful supernatural creature."
"Those people were really lucky, though. They ran into something that strong, but it only seemed interested in you." There was a teasing note in An Xi's voice.
Zhu Qing was momentarily speechless.
"I have the giant sequence, so of course my blood and vitality are powerful. If I were a zombie, I'd want to take a few bites out of myself too."
As they chatted, they caught up with the convoy in just five or six minutes. The zombie had been left so far behind that not even a trace of it could be seen.
An Xi ran straight to her vehicle and climbed through the open window into the front passenger seat.
"Xixi, you're finally back!"
Before you continue
