Shopping?
Esnie seemed to see right through what Jonas was thinking and gently rested a finger against his lips.
The corners of her mouth curled up slightly.
"Just browsing clothing stores and places like that, Mr. Jonas. I've been wondering whether you keep looking at other people because I'm simply not attractive enough."
Why did Esnie seem a little angry?
"I actually have plenty of time, but have you decided where you want to buy clothes, Esnie?"
Only after hearing Jonas say he had time did Esnie sit down and use her knife to cut into the lamb chop, which was already tender enough to fall apart.
"Probably those clothing stores owned by our Alt Conglomerate. I did consider shopping elsewhere, but then I thought we were only going to pick out clothes anyway, so those stores would be better. That way, Mr. Jonas's face won't cause a commotion."
Esnie swallowed her food, amusement in her eyes. "It's different when I go out and when you go out, Mr. Jonas. People might not even recognize me, but you're different. You could cause a commotion just by stepping outside."
That was true.
Jonas's reputation in District 25 was so great that his appearance might draw a crowd, followed by more and more people coming over to see what was happening.
"Then why don't we exercise a little capitalist privilege?"
Jonas clearly wasn't concerned about that possibility. "Close off the mall so it's just the two of us and the staff... doesn't that feel like something out of a novel from a long, long time ago?"
Having someone close off the mall so that only he and Esnie could shop there really did feel like one of those old novels with an invincible protagonist.
