Background / History
Lei grew up within the circle of NAT personnel that included his older sister Remiya, Chris, Hao Yin, and Shi Jinse. An old photograph shows him as a silver-haired child beside Shi. The two were the same age when Remiya took in nine-year-old Shi from the postwar ruins. Lei wanted a pet rabbit as a child but never had one 7 10 11.
Damon once saved the young Lei from a Heteromorph using a silver gun that deployed a lethal Laser Net. By the main story, Lei has become one of NAT’s principal fighters, although Damon remains a stronger opponent in their direct confrontations 3 9 11.
Three years before the main story, Lei shot Shen Weilai, the respected captain of Squad Two. The killing made him notorious: representatives of other bases condemned NAT for retaining him, while Shen’s student Li Weisen sought revenge. Chris later reveals that Shen had been infected while saving her and was threatening others. Unable to shoot her transformed lover herself, she froze; Lei fired the necessary shot and subsequently bore the blame 3 9.
Appearance
- Silver hair and deep blue eyes, with an icy, difficult-to-read gaze 2.
- Lean, tall frame; Chris has to raise her head to meet his eyes during an argument 3 6.
- Handsome, cold appearance, compared to unmelted mountain snow 10.
- Weapon harness and black straps; outside his combat jacket, he wears a shirt with a subtle pale-blue pattern 3 8.
- Strong resemblance to Remiya, noticed by Qin Miaomiao 7.
Personality
Lei is taciturn, defiant, and outwardly indifferent. He switches off his communicator rather than obey an order to return, openly dismisses base regulations, and answers Li Weisen’s provocations with cutting remarks. His reputation as a cold killing machine is reinforced by his willingness to make brutal decisions without hesitation, including amputating an infected resident’s leg to save him 2 3 4.
His composure also conceals loneliness and a troubling disregard for his own survival. During the desert battle, he stops dodging an apparently fatal attack and seems ready to accept death. Li later confronts him directly about treating his life as worthless, reminding him that Qin suffers when he is hurt 5 8.
Lei expresses affection through protection more readily than words. Although he repeatedly jokes about eating Qin, he never intended to do so. He shields the rabbit from public harassment, seeks him out after his escape, and keeps a rabbit-care book. Qin’s companionship gradually changes him; by the final chapter, Chris sees hope for a future in his eyes 4 6 7 10 11.
Abilities & Skills
Armed Combat
Lei fights with firearms and blades, using Heavenly Bane for both ranged attacks and close combat 2 3 10.
- Fires precisely enough to free Qin from a mutant’s grip without injuring him 5.
- Provides covering fire while Li Weisen engages a Level III Peacock Mantis Shrimp 10.
- Uses a concealed throwing weapon to pin a Heteromorph threatening Qin 11.
- Holds a Level III combat rating, but no subsequent rating advancement is documented 5.
Agility and Evasion
- Dodges the Botanical Garden Heteromorph with narrowly measured movement 3.
- Evades Hao Yin’s arrow traps and successive defensive mechanisms 7.
- Kills an aberrant within seconds while moving across a heap of abandoned cables 6.
- Cannot sustain the same performance indefinitely: injury and exhaustion leave him vulnerable in the burning Fog Forest 8.
Tactical Analysis and Coordination
Lei studies enemy behavior rather than relying solely on firepower 5 8.
- Recognizes that the regenerating squid manifestation is not the true target and attacks the surrounding structure to disrupt it 5.
- Draws the artificial heart’s defenses while Qin attempts to destroy it with Li’s blade 5.
- Identifies the Five-Element Beast’s mutually reinforcing attributes and decides that locating its core is preferable to a frontal attack 8.
- Coordinates with Qin and Chris to strike the Twin Mutants at the required moment 10.
Field Treatment and Piloting
- Treats his own wounds with practiced movements described as comparable to a medic’s 3.
- Performs an emergency amputation to remove an infected leg before evacuating the injured resident 3.
- Pilots combat aircraft, including the fighter used in the final attack on the Heteromorph nest 5 11.
Communication with Qin
- Eventually confirms that he can understand Qin’s otherwise unspoken rabbit speech “more or less.” Qin notices his earpiece during this revelation, but the precise mechanism is not explained 11.
Limitations
- Remains physically human: severe injuries, blood loss, and pain can incapacitate him 6 8 9.
- Is disadvantaged against Damon in their direct fights 9 11.
- Cannot defeat the desert variant without finding and destroying its hearts 5.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heavenly Bane — his signature weapon, capable of changing into a blade; also used for ranged combat 2 3 10.

- Li Weisen’s ancestral blade — temporarily borrowed during the desert mission and passed to Qin to destroy the artificial heart 5.
- Crocheted rabbit — a gift from a little girl he rescues, modeled on Qin with a small green bag 7.
- Rabbit books — One Hundred Ways to Cook a Rabbit fuels his teasing; How to Care for a Rabbit reveals his practical interest in keeping Qin 3 9 10.
- Braided Peace Knot — made by Lei as a child, given to Qin by Remiya, and later tied around Qin’s ankle by Lei 10 11.
Relationships
- Qin Miaomiao — rescued rabbit companion and eventual combat partner. Qin repeatedly risks himself for Lei, while Lei accepts his unusual abilities, protects him from the base, and trusts his account of Remiya’s disappearance 2 5 9 10 11.
- Remiya — older sister and researcher. She treats his injuries, cares for Qin at his request, and is one of the few people before whom he openly shows helplessness 3 6 9.
- Chris — superior officer who argues with him but defends his importance to NAT. Her confession explains the circumstances of Shen Weilai’s death 2 3 5 9.
- Li Weisen — hostile rival who initially wants revenge for Shen. Repeated rescues and cooperation gradually lead Li to protect Qin and assist Lei despite their unresolved antagonism 3 5 8 9 11.
- Shen Weilai — former teammate and Squad Two captain, shot by Lei after infection made him a danger to others 3 9.
- Damon — base commander and childhood rescuer who becomes an adversary. Their conflict centers on Qin’s captivity and culminates in combat during Remiya’s rescue 9 11.
- Hao Yin — longtime acquaintance and weapons inventor. Lei overcomes his traps and negotiates Qin’s release from his custody 7.
- Shi Jinse — childhood acquaintance and doctor, later revealed as a Level V Heteromorph. Lei accepts his help in locating Remiya after Qin insists on bringing him 7 10 11.
- Brode and the unnamed boy — initially targets of Lei’s mutant hunt. After Qin intervenes and Brode helps save the group, Lei frees the boy from a mutant-trapping cage 8.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Qin and the Desert Mission
Lei first encounters Qin in the ruined city, kills the fused monster pursuing him, and carries him back to NAT. Their early bond is strained by Lei’s food jokes and Qin’s fear of his ruthlessness. When Li sends Qin into the Variant Prison, Lei and Remiya find him, and Lei shoots the monster attacking him 2 3 4.
In the Chaozhou Desert, Lei rescues Li from a massive variant and continues fighting after Li leaves to alert the base. Qin arrives to save him, and they destroy the creature’s artificial main heart together. After Qin disappears in the collapse, Lei uses Li’s tracker to find the buried rabbit and reassures him despite his mutation 5.
Water Source Plan A and the Fog Forest
Lei retrieves Qin from Hao Yin and takes him on his solo assignment for Water Source Plan A. His fight with Brode brings him into conflict with Qin, who protects the mutant and his human companion. Lei accepts Qin’s choice when the rabbit returns to help him 7 8.
After the authorities burn the forest to force Brode to produce water, Lei survives the fighting and frees the captive boy. Returning to NAT, he refuses to let officials separate him from Qin, then confronts Damon when the rabbit is taken again 8 9.
Twin Mutants and the Final Operation
Lei chooses Qin as his partner after Li is injured during the Twin Mutant attack. Their synchronized strikes, supported by Chris’s laser cannon, end the threat. The victory is followed by Remiya’s disappearance and Qin’s renewed imprisonment 10.
In the final rescue, Lei believes Qin without hesitation and fights Damon alongside him. When Qin is caught in the Laser Net, Lei restrains Damon and threatens to kill him unless Qin is released 11.
After Shi’s sacrifice allows the survivors to escape, Remiya explains that suppressant must be carried to the Heteromorph nest’s core. Lei volunteers to pilot the fighter into the flames despite Qin’s protests. Qin returns to his original world with Lei’s braided cord still on his ankle; an escape-room scenario writer then introduces himself with the surname Lei. The ending suggests a connection without confirming the writer’s identity or Lei Ouyan’s survival 11.
