Background / History

Fang Ci grew up with Gu Cheng and remained extremely close to him. When Bai En imprisoned the ten-year-old Gu Cheng for invasive experiments, Fang Ci found people to help rescue him. He also knew about Gu Cheng’s subsequent chip-related loss of control—a history unknown to later recruits Yu Jingjing, Li Rang, and Lu Jiayi 103 130.

Before the apocalypse, the Special People carried out overseas missions as mercenaries. Fang Ci accompanied Gu Cheng in resisting Headquarters’ demands concerning relationships and reproduction, receiving three days of confinement alongside him. He later remembered an overseas New Year celebration after a mission in which the First Team had suffered no casualties 11 23 105.

Before their formal introduction in South City, Fang Ci briefly saw Ye Ruan training the Third Team. Although he witnessed Ye Ruan defeat a sparring opponent within two exchanges, his strongest memory was of the young captain’s profile, eyelashes, and red eyes 4.

Appearance

Fang Ci is described as fair-skinned and tall, with a gentle smile, refined manners, and an unhurried way of speaking 4 76 82.

  • Warm expression: Ye Ruan thinks his gentle demeanor resembles a Samoyed more than a husky 10.
  • Intimidating when angered: His eyes turn icy when he stops Huo Qi from touching Tang Tang 82.
  • Temporary mobility impairment: A broken leg leaves him using a wheelchair during the Shanhu District arc and his subsequent recovery; it has healed by the mountain exercise 27 50 57.

Personality

Fang Ci is courteous and considerate without habitually seeking intimacy. Yu Jingjing observes that, despite his gentle manner, he normally does not initiate contact with others; his attentiveness toward Ye Ruan is therefore conspicuous. He rejects the survivors’ offer of intimate “services,” treating their protection as his duty and preferring a relationship with someone he genuinely likes 5 11.

His sense of responsibility extends beyond fighting. He argues that the team must honor the survivors’ trust and follow its orders, and he restrains Gu Cheng from beating Ren Bing to death in front of the man’s daughter. His caution does not prevent decisive violence: he severs Shang Xiong’s hand when the base leader attempts an attack 18 19 84.

Fang Ci is reserved about romantic feelings and initially struggles to separate kindness from encouragement. After rejecting Yang Xiaomian, he continues offering help, only to be confronted with the possibility that this gives false hope. Once they become partners, he grows openly affectionate and attentive to Yang’s fear of abandonment 93 173.

He also participates in the First Team’s irreverent banter. Gu Cheng’s romantic boasting regularly draws dry objections—and, eventually, an outright demand that his captain show some shame 57 59.

Abilities & Skills

Marksmanship

Fang Ci is an outstanding shot, though his shooting ability is below Gu Cheng’s 41.

  • Placed second in a shooting competition five years earlier, behind Gu Cheng 41.
  • Can operate a machine gun and withstand its recoil 41.
  • Uses a scoped firearm to assess the apparently dead Level Three monster outside the scrapyard 8.

Strength, Reflexes, and Close Combat

Fang Ci ranks among the top ten Special People in overall ability. Gu Cheng considers him a plausible sparring opponent for Ye Ruan, unlike several other First Team members 52 123.

  • Catches Yang Xiaomian when he falls from a tree 62.
  • Stops Huo Qi with a crushing grip on his forearm 82.
  • Anticipates Shang Xiong’s concealed attack and cuts off his outstretched hand 84.
  • Tackles Ye Ruan clear of a falling utility pole, twisting his own arm in the process 88.
  • Limit: A powerful Level Three monster throws him hard enough to break his leg 27 30.

Leadership and Logistics

As deputy captain, Fang Ci takes responsibility for the separated First Team and coordinates practical survival tasks 27.

  • Secures shelter at Hu Fu’s printing factory and asks its residents to watch for Gu Cheng 27.
  • Recognizes Zhao Quan as a continuing danger despite the group’s escape from the bus attack 27.
  • Helps assess travel routes, favoring a national highway with fewer nearby buildings and people 115.

Cooking and Caretaking

Fang Ci prepares communal meals and provides practical care for sick or injured companions 10 76 111 173 174.

  • Makes ginger-seasoned seaweed and egg-drop soup for the chilled Ye Ruan 10.
  • Cooks oatmeal, egg-fried steamed buns, and vegetable side dishes for the group 76.
  • Tears a strip from his shirt to bandage Yang Xiaomian’s bleeding hand 111.
  • Buys fever medicine, provides warm water, and monitors Yang Xiaomian through his illness 173 174.
  • Adapts meals to Yang’s preferences, peeling shrimp and adding extra sugar to steamed buns 174.

Knowledge of Chip Aftereffects

Fang Ci recognizes Gu Cheng’s memory disruption as a likely consequence of renewed chip control, drawing on their childhood experience 127 130.

  • Questions Gu Cheng about Bai En to assess his condition 127.
  • Explains the connection between the chip, confused memories, and agitation 128.
  • Privately warns Ye Ruan that repeated activation worsens the aftereffects 130.
  • His assessment is based on observation and personal history, rather than a stated medical qualification 127 130.

  • Ye Ruan — Former romantic interest and trusted comrade. Fang Ci accepts Ye Ruan’s relationship with Gu Cheng, gradually placing greater value on their friendship while still reacting strongly when Ye Ruan is endangered 33 50 88 91.
  • Yang Xiaomian — Boyfriend. Their relationship develops from rescue and hesitant kindness through rejection, a drunken kiss, cohabitation, and Fang Ci’s explicit confession. They later plan to face military missions together 62 93 101 121 175.
  • Yu Jingjing — Teammate and frequent teasing partner. She exposes his crush on Ye Ruan, encourages his closeness with Yang Xiaomian, and receives discreet extra food from him 27 76 80.
