Background / History

Childhood and Service

Jiang Cong grew up impoverished and rejected by both humans and vampires because of his mixed ancestry. While begging in a snowstorm to pay for his sick mother’s treatment, he accidentally blocked Che Quan’s carriage. Ashamed of appearing destitute before him, Jiang Cong struggled to finish his request. Che Quan gave him a money pouch and a ruby, helping his family survive; Jiang Cong treasured the gifts and remembered the encounter as the beginning of his love 26 27.

After Che Quan’s banishment, Jiang Cong became his sole attendant at the Old Castle. He wore a mask, rarely spoke beyond his duties, and maintained the formal distance between servant and master. He prepared meals, dressed Che Quan, and supplied his blood 78 91 95 136.

The Old Castle Attack

Jiang Cong secretly negotiated with the ancient entity Chaos, then destroyed his mask. A guard denounced him as a traitor for revealing his face, and Jiang Cong killed him before returning to the castle. His bloodstained appearance and the nearby corpses made Che Quan suspicious, despite Jiang Cong’s promise never to harm him 137.

Dess subsequently attacked with vampire soldiers and trapped Che Quan in a blood-draining array intended to sacrifice him for the younger prince. Jiang Cong’s fury released overwhelming black-mist power: he destroyed the array, erased the guards’ souls, and tore Dess apart. Che Quan survived, but severe damage to his soul left him unconscious 138 139.

Revenge and Centuries of Waiting

Jiang Cong placed Che Quan in a crystal coffin and kept a sleepless vigil. He initially drove away the court’s searching nobles rather than kill them near Che Quan. After another conversation with Chaos, he carried Che Quan to the Royal Court, where the scent of Che Quan’s stolen blood in the youngest prince provoked him into killing the prince 139.

He killed the king’s favored consort and subjected the king to a blood-draining circle that consumed both his blood and soul. Jiang Cong also destroyed nobles attempting to claim the throne. Humans and half-vampires began hunting their former vampire oppressors, and Jiang Cong took power 140.

After razing the Royal Court, he built a new palace with a forbidden chamber for Che Quan’s coffin. During centuries of waiting, he read Che Quan’s diary and learned that he admired elegant, composed, refined, and powerful people. Jiang Cong deliberately studied etiquette, instruments, and even smiling to become someone Che Quan might appreciate 140.

Creation of the Escape Games

When Che Quan still did not awaken, Jiang Cong forced Chaos into a second bargain. He would supply souls, but determine the format and rules himself; Chaos would help awaken Che Quan after consuming enough evil souls. Jiang Cong created escape-game instances drawn from dark events in reality, with failed participants’ souls consumed by Chaos 141.

He did not exterminate every vampire. He spared kindly pureblood commoners, made all surviving vampires players, and also brought humans and half-vampires into the games. His decisions nevertheless harmed innocents, something he acknowledges when facing Che Quan’s judgment 141.

At the Lake of Hope, Jiang Cong later reveals another part of Che Quan’s awakening: the final wish lantern he sent across the lake remained alight until it reached the opposite shore. He used the blood inside it—his own—to wake Che Quan 154.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, slender, and long-legged; the tallest member of the first instance’s group 8 21.
  • Hair: Moonlight-silver, silky, and waist-length; sometimes tied up 8 27 53.
  • Eyes: Pale irises in deep, narrow eyes, which darken during hypnosis or intense emotion 101 137.
  • Bearing: Refined, languid, and composed even in casual clothing 8 9.
  • Former mask: Worn during his service at the Old Castle and later deliberately destroyed 78 137.
  • Hospital attire: A fitted white coat, thin-framed glasses, and a stethoscope 80.

Personality

Jiang Cong’s elegant composure is partly cultivated rather than innate. His polished smile and manners developed through years of practice based on Che Quan’s preferences. Outside that presentation, he can be cold, ruthless, and indifferent to suffering, particularly when punishing those who have harmed Che Quan 95 140.

His devotion combines attentive care with possessiveness and manipulation. He cooks, supplies blood, offers comfortable sleeping arrangements, and protects Che Quan from institutional punishment. He also monitors him through surveillance equipment, engineers circumstances that force closeness, and resents others looking at him 43 44 86 96 101 141.

Despite immense wealth and authority, Jiang Cong considers himself undeserving of comfort. He builds an extravagant courtyard for Che Quan while living in a cramped, dilapidated room himself. Even a gentle push from Che Quan fills him with happiness because it contrasts with their earlier encounters, when Che Quan stabbed him through the heart 125.

His confidence gives way to anxiety when Che Quan might reject him. After admitting responsibility for the harmful instance settings, he asks for forgiveness rather than denying them. As their relationship becomes mutual, he increasingly asks permission, accommodates their different expectations of intimacy, and worries about Che Quan’s comfort in public 141 142 151 153 154.
