| First Appearance | Chapter 105, named introduction 105 |
Background
Ju Lei’s assigned character is Meng Le’s former boyfriend. Their relationship ended a year before the camping trip, leaving them practically strangers, although his character still has feelings for her. He joins the return trip to Talles Camp both to win her back and to protect her after learning that a club member died by suicide following the previous visit 105.
His character did not attend that earlier trip and has no firsthand knowledge of the incident. Meng Le corroborates part of his introduction: her own description mentions an ex-boyfriend among the participants but does not identify him by name 105.
Personality
Ju Lei is described as a technology geek who is oblivious to romance. Unlike Gong Yan and Ke Jiaxi, he does not court Meng Le’s attention during the camp’s early activities. His concern for her emerges through earnest attempts to solve the escape questions rather than flirtation 108 110.
He is highly susceptible to fear but remains willing to help. After a night of supernatural harassment, he refuses to uncover his taped-shut eyes even when Meng Le comes to his aid. Later, he fights back against attacking spirits, assists the investigation, and prepares to volunteer himself as a sacrifice. He also acknowledges his limitations, crediting Che Quan rather than claiming responsibility for the monsters’ defeat 116 120 124 129.
Abilities & Skills
Logical Deduction
Ju Lei analyzes the instance’s wording and translates abstract clues into practical advice.
- Escape-question reasoning: Recommends that Meng Le remain still in complete darkness because choosing an unseen direction would amount to guesswork; the system confirms his answer is correct 110.
- Interpreting guidance: Explains Che Quan’s reasoning about the ghost’s connection to the thirteenth floor so Meng Le can act on it 112.
- Question-system analysis: Deduces that personal questions arise from indecision, while escape questions appear when a player is closest to death 120.
- Environmental deduction: Suggests that the objects and monster missing from the mayor’s photograph have materialized inside the office 131.
Practical Survival
Ju Lei relies on precautions, improvised tools, and cooperation rather than demonstrated supernatural abilities.
- Tapes his eyes shut to avoid opening them during the nighttime attacks 116.
- Strikes a hostile guard with a broom while attempting to help Che Quan escape 123.
- Physically resists the spirits of Ke Jiaxi and Gong Yan throughout the night 124.
- Remains vulnerable to hypnosis and concealed attacks, requiring help from Meng Le and Che Quan 127 131 132.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Adhesive tape — Used to keep his eyes closed during the camp’s nighttime haunting 116.
- Broom — Briefly used as an improvised weapon against a guard in the mayor’s office 123.
- Serpent Idols — Used with Meng Le to smash the fountain sculpture and later destroy other idols by striking them together 128 129.
- Small key — Recovered by emptying the withered plant pot. Ju Lei carries it until Che Quan uses it to destroy the Primitive Idol hidden inside the monster 130 131 132.
Relationships
- Meng Le — His ex-girlfriend within their assigned instance backstory. As players, they become cooperative companions: he helps with her escape questions, while she later protects him from the slime monster and breaks his hypnosis. He admires her decision to spend her points reviving their teammates 105 110 131 134.
- Che Quan — Teammate and principal protector. Ju Lei calls him “Boss,” follows his instructions, and openly attributes their survival to his abilities 110 120 122 129.
- Xia Lan — Teammate with whom he shares his account of the boys’ nighttime ordeal. He feels guilty that he could not hold on to her when she rushed toward a false cry for help 117 120.
- Sang Shiwen — Upon her revival, Ju Lei makes sure she knows that Meng Le paid the points to rescue her 134.
- Gong Yan and Ke Jiaxi — Fellow occupants of the boys’ room. Their returning spirit forms later attack Ju Lei, attempting to force open his eyelids and mouth 116 124.
- Zhang Yun — Hostile camp guide involved in the ritual surrounding his captivity. Her hypnotic attack makes him repeatedly strike his head against a statue 126 127.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Screening-Room Escape
Ju Lei secures one of the screening room’s six chairs before Meng Le is trapped inside a horror film. His chair is numbered six, making him the first player assigned to advise her 109 110.
He recommends waiting rather than moving blindly through the dark corridor and suggests using a “Save and Retry” chance as protection. Meng Le initially doubts him but follows his advice; the answer succeeds, and the retry is refunded. He subsequently reads the film’s premise aloud and helps interpret Che Quan’s deductions 110 111 112.
Nighttime Haunting and Forest Hide-and-Seek
Ju Lei survives the first night with his eyes taped shut, but the experience leaves him so distressed that he mistakes his rescuers for monsters. During hide-and-seek, he tells Xia Lan that a creature impersonated Meng Le and coaxed Ke Jiaxi into opening his eyes 116 117.
After Xia Lan disappears, Ju Lei accompanies Che Quan to Meng Le’s rescue and helps her back to camp. He explains his deductions about the question system and admits that Xia Lan likely received no personal question because she rushed to help without doubting the voice she heard 120.
Miracle Town and the Returning Spirits
Ju Lei investigates Miracle Town with Meng Le and Che Quan, identifying the mayor’s office as a likely place to search for the source of the disturbances. When guards attack, he strikes one with a broom before Che Quan immobilizes them 122 123.
The group then encounters four dead teammates apparently restored to life. Recognizing them as dangerous spirits, Ju Lei conceals his alarm. Back at camp, the spirits of Ke Jiaxi and Gong Yan spend the night trying to force his eyes and mouth open 124.
Captivity and the Sacrifice Trap
Ju Lei goes missing and is found bound and gagged among the idols on the Central Building’s second floor. During Zhang Yun’s attack, hypnosis compels him to smash his head against a statue until Che Quan interrupts the spell 126 127.
Following Che Quan’s instructions, Ju Lei and Meng Le destroy the fountain’s Serpent Sculpture with the smaller idols, turning their initial fear into a competition. When the deity demands two souls, Ju Lei is about to volunteer himself, but Che Quan rejects the sacrifice and directs them to destroy the townspeople’s idols instead 128 129.
Primitive Idol and Instance Clearance
In the mayor’s office, Ju Lei recovers the small key and helps search for the original idol. Meng Le saves him from a camouflaged slime monster and later uses pain to free him from hypnosis. Che Quan ultimately protects both players and destroys the Primitive Idol with the key 130 131 132.
Ju Lei reaches the Life Gate alongside Meng Le, kicking aside the snakes obstructing their escape. All three surviving players clear the instance and receive an additional 30,000 points for completing its storyline. After Meng Le purchases two Soul Crystals, he witnesses Xia Lan and Sang Shiwen’s revival and credits her for their rescue 133 134.
