Power Progression
The system evaluates Dai Li’s combat strength separately from Jujutsu Society’s official certification 14 23 28.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 4 — initial awakening | 1 | Awakens Life and Binding. His cursed energy is Grade 4, while his physical ability is that of an ordinary person. |
| First cursed-energy increase | 1 | Vows never to cut down a tree, slightly increasing his reserves. Activating the technique exhausts his remaining cursed energy. |
| Grade 2 overall; Grade 1 cursed energy | 4 | Permanently sacrifices natural cursed-energy growth for a massive reserve increase. An ordinary binding vow makes this activation cost no cursed energy; poor control and ordinary physical ability keep his overall rating lower. |
| Temporary automatic control and triple output | 5 | Gains automatic offense and defense in exchange for reduced efficiency afterward. Additional vows triple his output and draw future recovery into the current fight. |
| Semi-Grade 1 — system rating | 14 | After two months, his cursed energy recovers. Reserves remain Grade 1 and physical fitness remains average; the system includes his technique when assessing overall strength. |
| Second innate technique | 18 19 | Sacrifices the cursed power within Sukuna’s Finger to awaken Projection Cursed Technique, engraved directly onto his soul. |
| Projection arsenal established | 20 | Analyzes Jujutsu High’s cursed-tool collection and becomes able to summon about twenty tools simultaneously, though independent control is taxing. |
| Grade 2 — official mission designation | 23 | Undertakes a solo exorcism assignment and destroys a Semi-Grade 1 curse with fifty-eight projected tools. |
| Grade 1 — system rating | 24 | After two months of missions and daily training, his reserves have increased by 20%. His panel lists Grade 1 overall strength and cursed energy, with Grade 3 physical ability. |
| Falling Blossom Emotion mastered | 24 25 | Gives up the ability to learn Hollow Wicker Basket and spends roughly 30% of his cursed energy to immediately master the domain countermeasure. |
| Semi-Grade 1 — official promotion | 28 | Completes three Grade 1-or-higher missions with Mei Mei and qualifies for promotion. Institutional obstruction delays further recognition. |
| Special Grade — system rating | 40 41 | Sacrifices some memories for an enormous cursed-energy increase. Both overall strength and cursed energy reach Special Grade; physical ability remains Grade 2. |
| Projection’s “true essence” and improved barrier understanding | 45 | Claims rewards for defeating Yuta and Rika, unlocking reproduction of other techniques’ effects and greater understanding of Barrier Technique. Successfully imitates Boogie Woogie. |
Background / History
Before transmigrating, Dai Li was an enthusiastic Jujutsu Kaisen fan who argued online about power rankings, particularly his claim that Sukuna obtained the World-Cutting Slash by “taking out loans.” He studied Japanese in high school and college because his fascination with anime and manga had made him imagine becoming a summoned hero 1 2.
A manga giveaway unexpectedly awarded him the chance to challenge Sukuna, transporting him into the jujutsu world. He awoke cold and muddy in a rice field near Sendai with a newly awakened cursed technique, but no fighting experience or legal identity 1 10.
His system initially offered only technique awakening, status information, and a mission to defeat Sukuna. It provided no beginner’s reward or revival; the mission notice specified that he must, at minimum, fight a fully incarnated Sukuna with the power of twenty fingers 1 2 3.
Appearance
- Early clothing: A white T-shirt and cargo pants borrowed from the Sawada household; the outfit is described as dated for someone his age 2 4.
- School clothing: Wears a Jujutsu High uniform after enrollment. It is torn and blood-soaked when he emerges from his battle with Miss Delia 26.
- Cursed-energy color: Deliberately changes his energy to red for dramatic effect during the Geto fight; later weapon barrages also trail red light 7 23 42.
Personality
Dai Li is boastful, argumentative, and quick to turn danger into trash talk or anime references. His confidence repeatedly exceeds his actual experience: he initially imagines limitless borrowing will make him invincible, only to exhaust himself through his first minor vow 1 4 7.
His bravado does not eliminate fear. He initially considers avoiding Geto’s conflict, knowing that death would be permanent, but chooses to protect the Sawadas rather than watch them be murdered. His opposition to treating ordinary people as disposable later drives his anger toward violent curse users, whom he kills with little guilt 3 28.
He enjoys gaming, snacks, and sleep, spending his first two months at school almost entirely at leisure. Nevertheless, he eventually recognizes his weaknesses and commits to daily control exercises, missions, and practice with classmates rather than relying exclusively on raw reserves 14 20 24 43.
Dai Li wants to become mature and dependable, even when his attempts at a reserved persona collapse under Gojo’s teasing. After sacrificing memories, he refuses to regret the decision: his priority is gaining the strength to protect others and change a tragic future, while valuing his present life over uncertain recollections 11 41 46.
Abilities & Skills
Life and Binding
Dai Li’s original innate technique enhances the benefits of self-imposed binding vows and sacrifices. It can alter cursed-energy capacity, output, recovery, and technique performance, but still requires equivalent exchange and cursed energy to activate 1 7.
- Permanent growth: Can raise his cursed-energy ceiling through meaningful sacrifices, including natural growth potential and memories 4 40 41.
- Immediate combat benefits: Grants automatic reinforcement, increased output, and accelerated access to future cursed-energy recovery 5.
- Technique improvement: Can increase the efficiency of Projection rather than simply enlarging his reserves 24 43.
- Ordinary-vow combinations: Conventional binding vows function alongside it without receiving its enhancement or consuming activation energy. His one-time zero-cost combination enables the initial Grade 1 reserve increase 4.
- Ownership restriction: Cannot sacrifice an object he does not own, as demonstrated by his failed attempt to sacrifice a tree 1.
- No infinite compounding: Activation costs scale with the benefits obtained; exchanging cursed energy for more cursed energy cannot produce endless returns 1.
- Physical limits: Rapid reserve increases can exceed his body’s capacity and potentially make it burst apart 5.
- Consequences: Gojo warns that violating its conditions may carry severe penalties comparable to breaking a vow between two people 12.
Life and Binding: Tempering
A technique extension that rewards victories achieved under deliberate restrictions 24 37.
- Reduces his combat effectiveness to earn improvements in reserves, energy efficiency, technique efficiency, or control 24.
- Grants rewards only once per day; repeated victories over Grade 1 and Semi-Grade 1 spirits produce diminishing returns 24 37.
- Improved Projection efficiency lowers maintenance costs and increases both initial weapon strength and the energy each tool can accept 37.
- During the final against Yuta, reduces reserves, technique efficiency, energy efficiency, and control precision by at least 25%, while disabling Life and Binding during combat. Greater restrictions improve the chance of stronger rewards 42.
- Reward tiers depend on the strength gap after the restrictions are applied 45.
Projection Cursed Technique
Using the activation phrase “Trace On,” Dai Li reproduces objects as temporary cursed-energy constructs. The technique recreates their appearance, structure, function, and—in analyzed cursed tools—the contained curse 19 20.
- Analysis: Ordinary tools can be analyzed by sight; stronger curses may require direct contact. Complex projections depend on how well he understands the original 20 49.
- Remote control: Directs projected weapons through the air while also fighting at close range 23 43.
- Weapon-handling memories: Receives memories of how previous wielders handled an item, helping him learn it quickly. These do not grant the wielder’s life memories or immediate mastery 20.
- Versatile constructs: Produces blades, axes, halberds, darts, blunt weapons, and shields for offense, defense, and positioning 23 25 38.
- Large-scale barrages: Advances from approximately twenty simultaneous tools to more than a thousand 20 42.
- Maintenance cost: Constructs disappear when their cursed-energy supply is cut off; prolonged existence requires continued expenditure 19.
- Control demands: Missed attacks waste energy, and managing many independently moving tools requires precise allocation and concentration 21 43.
Projection: Technique-Effect Reproduction
After mastering Projection’s “true essence,” Dai Li can analyze a sorcerer’s cursed energy and construct the effects of their technique 45.
- Boogie Woogie: Successfully reproduces Todo’s positional swap, exchanging places with a pebble 45.
- Initial strain: First-time analysis requires enormous energy expenditure and can briefly destabilize his cursed energy and make his movements sluggish 46.
- Understanding requirement: Cannot reproduce another technique through imagination alone; witnessing an effect is not equivalent to understanding its mechanism 50.
- Failed Red imitation: Produces a flickering orb, but it collapses because he has copied the outward structure without the stable energy cycle and underlying reversal of Limitless 49 50.
Falling Blossom Emotion
An automatic defense obtained through Life and Binding while trapped in Miss Delia’s domain 24 25.
- Responds to sure-hit attacks with an equivalent release of cursed energy and also repels physical strikes 25.
- Requires no hand signs or conscious tracking of an attack’s direction and timing 25.
- Helps resist the domain’s downward pull while Dai Li balances on projected tower shields 25.
- Cannot make him invulnerable to the domain’s cursed sewage, whose accumulated curses exceed his available energy 25.
Reinforcement and Close-Quarters Combat
Dai Li initially relies on overwhelming cursed-energy reinforcement, then develops a mixed style combining weapon barrages, feints, targeted kicks, and melee pressure 5 16 38 43.
- Wind King Iron Fist: Compresses cursed energy around his fist into a high-pressure blast. Knocks down the Double-Pupiled General and destroys many weaker spirits behind it 6.
- Night Guy: An all-out, red-energy kick powered by stacked vows and concentrated borrowed energy. Breaks through Geto’s restrained Uzumaki and strikes his face 7.
- Tactical targeting: Attacks Maki’s sword wrist and uses ranged weapons as cover before closing on Mechamaru with a warhammer 16 38.
- Remaining limitation: His physical ability is only Grade 2 when his system rates him Special Grade 41.
Barrier Knowledge
- Cannot expand his own domain during the Miss Delia encounter because his understanding of barriers is too shallow 24.
- Selects greater understanding of Barrier Technique as a reward after the Goodwill final. No completed Domain Expansion is documented in the provided chapters 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Projected cursed-tool arsenal — Based largely on weapons analyzed in Jujutsu High’s storeroom; includes swords, daggers, axes, spears, blunt weapons, and shields rather than a single permanent weapon 20 23 25 38.
- Maki’s long-handled blade replica — His first demonstrated projection, reproduced with its red ribbon 19.
- Imitation Soul Liberation Blade — An imagined weapon with a dark-gray blade and fur-like hilt decoration. Exceptionally sturdy and sharp, but unable to cut souls because Dai Li lacks the necessary understanding of their shape 44 49.
- Sukuna’s Finger — Sacrifices its cursed power to acquire Projection. The physical finger remains, but its missing curse draws institutional scrutiny 18 19 20.
Relationships
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher, recruiter, and protector. Trains Dai Li’s cursed-energy control, shields him from the higher-ups, and encourages him to build strength through understanding rather than shortcuts 11 20 21 46 50.
- Yuta Okkotsu — Classmate, friend, and Goodwill final opponent. Dai Li reassures him and helps oversee him and Rika; Yuta later resolves to oppose any execution order against Dai Li 23 31 45 49.
- Maki Zenin — Classmate and sparring rival. Her discipline clashes with his laziness, but she identifies his poor control and contributes to his later practice 15 16 43.
- Panda — Welcoming classmate who introduces him to campus life and describes Jujutsu High as a home 13.
- Toge Inumaki — Classmate whose ingredient-based speech Dai Li initially mistakes for a comment about food 14.
- Kiyotaka Ijichi — Mission supervisor and practical supporter. Helps with purchases, administers first aid, transports him for treatment, and helps conceal sensitive information in reports 14 23 26.
- Masamichi Yaga — Principal who tests his resolve through a cursed-corpse fight, admits him, and recognizes both his potential and weak fundamentals 12 13.
- Shoko Ieiri — Treats his injuries after the Miss Delia battle 26.
- Mei Mei — Paid mission leader and promotion evaluator. Oversees his qualifying assignments and later praises his precise control 28 41.
- Suguru Geto — Ideological opponent. Dai Li fights him to protect the Sawadas and distrusts him after he breaks the confrontation’s terms 3 6 7.
- Aoi Todo — Competitive rival whose Boogie Woogie counters Dai Li’s weapon swarms. Their team-event duel ends without a decisive result 32 34.
- The Sawadas — Civilian benefactors who give him shelter, clothing, and food. Their kindness motivates him to repay them and risk his life for their safety 2 3.
- Ryomen Sukuna — Target of his system mission and personal ambition; Dai Li remains determined to confront him even after losing memories 2 41.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival and the Sawada Confrontation
The Sawadas shelter Dai Li after his arrival, and he repays them by exorcising a weak spirit attached to Uncle Sawada. When Geto threatens to kill the couple, Dai Li challenges him despite their enormous strength difference 2 3.
Successive vows transform the fight from Geto’s casual test into an escalating clash involving Playful Cloud, the Double-Pupiled General, and Maximum: Uzumaki. Dai Li’s final kick injures Geto and ends the confrontation, but Geto had held back; Dai Li collapses only after watching him depart 4 5 6 7.
Enrollment and Training
Gojo traces Dai Li through cursed-energy residue left at a pachinko parlor and recruits him over sushi. The promise of legal identification helps secure his acceptance, while designation as Gojo’s student offers protection from institutional interference 10 11.
Dai Li passes Yaga’s entrance test, initially neglects training, and then begins addressing his poor control after acquiring Projection. Gojo’s exercises require him to supply different amounts of cursed energy to ten cat-shaped cursed corpses simultaneously 13 14 19 20 21.
Miss Delia and Promotion
After completing a school exorcism, Dai Li is trapped in Miss Delia’s lethal restroom domain. He acquires Falling Blossom Emotion, uses projected shields to avoid cursed sewage, wounds the spirit with a saturation attack, and finishes her after the domain collapses into technique burnout 24 25.
His severe injuries require treatment, but the victory earns Gojo’s support for promotion. Subsequent qualifying missions with Mei Mei include his first killings of human curse users and lead to official Semi-Grade 1 status 26 28.
Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event
| Match / Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Team battle against Aoi Todo | Interrupted when the team competition ends; neither fighter has been decisively defeated 34. |
| Individual draw against Momo Nishimiya | Advances by immediate forfeit 35. |
| Match against Noritoshi Kamo | Forces a rapid surrender through projected blades and a close-range sword attack 35. |
| Semifinal against Mechamaru | Uses a weapon barrage as cover, then disables the puppet with a warhammer 38. |
| Final against Yuta and Rika | Wins under Tempering restrictions after overpowering Yuta’s copied projections and stopping his final strike short of Yuta’s chest 42 43 45. |
Before the final, Dai Li publicly activates Life and Binding and sacrifices memories to reach Special Grade. The revelation of his second technique alarms Gakuganji and intensifies scrutiny from the higher-ups 40 41.
Memory Loss and Independent Growth
The sacrifice removes much of Dai Li’s knowledge of Jujutsu Kaisen, though fragments and repeated phrases remain. Gojo detects that part of his soul’s core appears to have been replaced; Dai Li suspects he left a conditional safeguard, but memory restoration is not confirmed 41 45 46.
After winning the final, he chooses stronger abilities rather than investigating his missing memories. His unsuccessful attempt to reproduce Red reinforces a new direction: studying techniques, tools, and souls to develop powers that belong to him rather than depending on foreknowledge 45 49 50.
