Background / History
Before enrolling, Yuta had been bullied and carried deep guilt over people being hurt because of his curse. His future classmates hear a rumor that he injured other students by trapping them in a locker; the incident is presented as a rumor rather than directly shown. The Jujutsu Higher-Ups secretly sentenced him to death because of the danger posed by Rika, but Satoru Gojo saved him and brought him to Jujutsu High 21 23 29 47.
His classroom introduction immediately becomes a confrontation. Maki, Panda, and Inumaki prepare to attack or restrain the cursed presence surrounding him, provoking Rika’s retaliation. Dai Li draws her attention and defends against her until Gojo intervenes. Afterward, Dai reassures Yuta and offers help, giving him hope that he can make friends at the school 22.
Yuta’s initial goal is to control his cursed energy and break Rika’s curse. He persists through difficult conditioning despite lagging behind his classmates, while Gojo develops a cursed-tool training method and Maki pushes his close-combat skills through sparring 27 28.
Personality
Yuta initially appears shy, anxious, and quick to blame himself. Maki’s comments about his victim-like behavior leave him visibly frightened, and Kyoto’s hostile reception makes him wonder whether he is causing trouble for his companions. He fears that using his strength will hurt others or trigger Rika’s loss of control 23 29 37 43.
His gentleness persists as his confidence grows. He apologizes while attacking Hakari, checks on him after winning, and accepts praise modestly. He regards Rika’s power as something meant to protect his companions rather than harm them 35 36 39.
The Goodwill Event brings out his competitive spirit. Inspired by Dai Li’s encouragement and Hakari’s enthusiasm, he asks Dai to fight seriously if they meet. During the final, he continues despite a deep shoulder wound, then accepts defeat when his body can no longer sustain the battle 37 42 45.
His loyalty also becomes more decisive: after hearing that the Higher-Ups might condemn Dai Li as an incarnated ancient sorcerer, Yuta privately resolves to intervene against any execution order 49.
Abilities & Skills
Bond with Rika Orimoto
Rika is a Special Grade Vengeful Cursed Spirit bound to Yuta. Her immense power initially protects him without reliable restraint, but training allows them to act as coordinated partners 22 29 36.
- Automatic protection: Perceived attacks or bullying can provoke Rika into manifesting and retaliating 22.
- Cursed-energy supply: Yuta draws on Rika’s energy through his ring and channels it into his blade 33 36.
- Pincer attacks: Rika’s physical assaults and Yuta’s sword attacks leave Hakari no opening to complete his Domain Expansion 36.
- Adaptation to position swaps: By staying close and moving together, they prevent Todo from exploiting Boogie Woogie’s openings 39.
- Combined reinforcement: Yuta merges their strength, allowing Rika to support his own attacks directly 44 45.
- Control limit: Before the event, Yuta admits that improved obedience does not guarantee Rika will never run wild again 29.
Copy
Before Rika’s curse is lifted, Yuta’s Copy technique allows him to copy cursed techniques without conditions. Its demonstrated application is reproducing Dai Li’s Projection Cursed Technique during their final 42.
- Projects more than a thousand cursed tools to meet Dai’s weapon barrage 42.
- Creates replacement swords and a short blade during close combat 45.
- Does not automatically reproduce Dai’s efficiency or control: Yuta’s projections form more slowly, consume more energy, and are repeatedly destroyed before he can use them 43.
- Requires substantial concentration to control a large weapon swarm 43.
Swordsmanship & Close Combat
Training with Maki improves Yuta from an awkward beginner into a fighter capable of counterattacking under pressure. Gojo later observes that his movements have become fluid and assertive 27 28.
- Reacts to Kamo’s blood projectile and quickly closes the distance for a sword attack 33.
- Counters Hakari with the blunt edge of his sword after evading a train-door attack 36.
- Adjusts his sword angle to deflect Dai Li’s blade, then follows with a projected short-blade attack 45.
- Remains vulnerable to distraction during training; turning toward Gojo mid-spar allows Maki to strike him in the face 27.
Cursed Energy & Endurance
Yuta possesses Special Grade strength, supported by Rika’s enormous cursed-energy supply. His control and physical conditioning, however, remain less developed than his raw power 36 41 43.
- Reinforces his sword with pink cursed energy 33 36.
- Continues fighting after injuries to his shoulder, face, and abdomen 42 44.
- Uses copied Projection less efficiently than Dai Li, creating a disadvantage in sustained exchanges 43.
- Loses the final because his injured body gives out before his cursed energy does 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword / cursed tool — Gojo’s training method has Yuta imbue a tool with his curse and draw on the curse contained within it to reduce the risk of Rika going berserk 27 29.
- Ring — Releases Rika’s cursed energy during combat and precedes her controlled summoning against Hakari 33 36.
- Projected cursed tools — Temporary weapons created with copied Projection, including massed weapon barrages, replacement swords, and a short blade 42 45.
Relationships
- Rika Orimoto — His beloved and bound vengeful spirit. Yuta openly affirms his love for her and intends to break her curse; their combat relationship develops from automatic protection into mutual support 22 30 44.
- Dai Li — Classmate, trusted friend, and tournament rival. Dai welcomes and encourages him; Yuta considers Dai his most dependable classmate and later resolves to protect him from the Higher-Ups 22 31 34 49.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and protector. Saves Yuta from execution, teaches him to control his curse, defends his participation at Kyoto, and praises his effort after the final 27 29 45.
- Maki Zenin — Classmate and sparring partner. Initially confronts him harshly, then helps develop his combat skills. Yuta respects her resilience despite the Zenin Clan’s treatment of her 23 27 29.
- Panda and Toge Inumaki — Classmates who oppose Maki’s harsh treatment of Yuta and later recognize his training progress 23 27.
- Kinji Hakari and Kirara Hoshi — Upperclassmen who reassure him after Kyoto’s hostile welcome. Hakari later loses to Yuta and acknowledges his ability without resentment 29 36.
- Aoi Todo — Rival who respects Yuta’s devotion to Rika. After losing their semifinal, Todo promises to defeat him next time 30 39.
- Shoko Ieiri — Treats his tournament injuries with externally applied Reverse Cursed Technique 45 48.
- Suguru Geto — Targets Yuta to obtain Rika’s power for his sorcerer-only world 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event
Gojo selects Yuta and Dai Li as Tokyo’s first-year representatives. Kyoto’s leadership objects to Yuta’s attendance because of Rika, while Dai frames the event as a chance to demonstrate that Yuta can act beyond simply relying on her protection 29 31.
| Match / Phase | Opponent or Objective | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Team battle | Locate and exorcise the marked Grade 2 cursed spirit | Kamo intercepts Yuta, but Yuta ultimately exorcises the target, securing Tokyo’s victory and earning Gojo’s MVP praise 33 34. |
| Individual match | Kinji Hakari | Wins after summoning Rika; their coordinated pressure prevents Hakari from expanding his domain and forces his surrender 36. |
| Semifinal | Aoi Todo | Wins through close coordination with Rika, adapting to Boogie Woogie and stopping Todo’s final attack 38 39. |
| Final | Dai Li | Copies Projection and combines strength with Rika, but loses after sustained injuries and physical exhaustion 42 43 44 45. |
Recovery and Emerging Threats
- Medical recovery: Shoko heals most of Yuta’s injuries, although exhaustion persists. He remains concerned about Dai Li despite having just fought him 48.
- Geto’s plan: Geto makes Yuta his primary target and prepares the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons as part of his attempt to seize Rika 47 48.
- Loyalty against the Higher-Ups: Hearing that Dai could face execution over his two techniques, Yuta resolves to stand with him and Gojo against the authorities 49.
