Background / History
Ryu lived in the Mutsu region roughly four hundred years before the modern Culling Game. He grew up hearing stories about Hajime Kashimo’s victories and wanted to challenge him, but Kashimo died before they could meet. Ryu considered this missed encounter one of his life’s regrets 17.
Finding his own era boring and lacking opponents who could match him, Ryu chose to cooperate with Kenjaku and return through incarnation. Kenjaku also recommended Ryu as an opponent to Kashimo four centuries before their eventual meeting 16 17.
After reincarnating, Ryu devoted himself to earning points and challenging powerful opponents in Sendai. His pursuit of battle left him little time to appreciate the modern world until his defeat forced him to stop 21.
Appearance
Ryu is a tall man whose prominent pompadour serves as the firing point for his Cursed Energy Cannon 10 16.
- Pompadour: A source of considerable pride; insults about it provoke him more than ordinary combat taunts 18.
- Cannon opening: Blue light gathers at the top of his head before he fires 16 17.
- Overheating: Sustained cannon fire makes his hairstyle turn red and burst apart; he subsequently repairs it with a comb 20.
Personality
Ryu treats satisfying combat like a meal, describing opponents and attacks as “dessert,” “sweet,” or a “main course.” He considers his opening attack on Lu Yun a greeting rather than a sneak attack, arguing that anyone unable to withstand it does not deserve to fight him 10 16 17.
His aggression readily becomes camaraderie when he encounters someone he respects. Discovering that Kashimo is both his contemporary and the legendary fighter he admired, Ryu enthusiastically embraces him and calls him “big bro.” He repeatedly defends Kashimo against Uro’s mockery, even while seeking to resume their duel 17 19 20.
Ryu accepts death as a possible consequence of challenging someone stronger. Initially questioning why Kashimo spared him, he ultimately accepts the opportunity to improve and promises a rematch rather than dwelling on his defeat 21.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Energy Output and Reinforcement
Kenjaku praises Ryu as having the highest cursed energy output of any Culling Game player. His output exceeds Kashimo’s in their direct exchanges, forcing Kashimo to rely on speed and redirection rather than repeatedly blocking his blows 9 20.
- Blocks a fully charged strike from Kashimo’s staff with his arms, suffering only slight reddening of the skin 17.
- Catches Kashimo’s knee strike and holds his leg in place despite being pushed several meters backward 18.
- Continues fighting after an electrically assisted punch makes him cough blood 18.
- His durability does not prevent Kashimo from accumulating electrical charges inside his body and detonating them 20.
Cursed Energy Discharge / Cursed Energy Cannon
Ryu’s cursed technique discharges cursed energy as powerful blue blasts from his pompadour. He uses it at long range, in close combat, and to restrict an opponent’s movement 12 17 19.
- Spread fire: Splits a beam into numerous smaller streaks that rain down along Kashimo’s route 17.
- Confined-space fire: A blast inside a building gains enough power that Kashimo cannot split it with his staff 17.
- Feints: Fires an intimidating blast without maintaining it, using the distraction to get behind Uro and punch her 18.
- Covering fire: Forces Uro to dodge, creating an opening for Kashimo to seize her 20.
- Counter: Because his blasts follow trajectories, Uro can redirect them through Sky Manipulation 18.
- Limit: Repeated firing overheats and disrupts his pompadour 20.
Domain Expansion
Ryu activates Domain Expansion during the three-way battle with Kashimo and Uro. His domain has a sure-hit effect, but not a sure-kill effect; its name and specific landscape are not described 19 23.
- Clashes evenly with Uro’s domain, canceling their respective sure-hit effects 19.
- The enclosing domain boundary collapses after both domain users suffer injuries that prevent them from maintaining it 20.
Combat Tactics and Recognition
- Combines grappling with point-blank cannon fire, attempting to shoot Kashimo while holding his leg 18.
- Coordinates with Kashimo to lure the concealed Uro into an ambush 20.
- Recognizes that Lu Yun is not Kashimo despite their identical body and cursed-energy signature, becoming suspicious before Lu Yun explains their shared-body arrangement 24.
Equipment / Items
- Comb — Carried inside his clothes and used to restore his pompadour after excessive cannon fire 20.
Relationships
- Hajime Kashimo — Childhood idol, fellow sorcerer from his era, friend, and desired rival. Their first meeting fulfills Ryu’s longstanding wish to fight him; after losing, Ryu vows to challenge him again 17 20 21.
- Lu Yun — Initially a target of Ryu’s probing cannon attack. After learning how Lu Yun shares Kashimo’s body, Ryu agrees to help him fight Sukuna 12 24.
- Takako Uro — Sendai opponent whose spatial technique counters his cannon. Her interruption of his duel and insults about his hair intensify their hostility; Lu Yun later asks her to work alongside Ryu in Sendai 18 25.
- Kenjaku — The sorcerer Ryu cooperated with to obtain a second life. Kenjaku praises his output and previously recommended him as an opponent to Kashimo 9 16 17.
- Ryomen Sukuna — A legendary opponent Ryu is curious to face. He accepts Lu Yun’s invitation to join a future confrontation with the King of Curses 24.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sendai Colony Battles
Ryu is introduced fighting Uro before the colony settles into its expected four-way standoff. Sensing Lu Yun’s substantial cursed energy, he fires a distant probing shot that knocks him into Sendai Stadium without injuring him 10 12.
After Kashimo defeats Dhruv Lakdawalla and Kurourushi, Ryu attacks him from a rooftop. Their ensuing duel destroys a building and earns mutual praise. Learning Kashimo’s identity transforms the encounter into an enthusiastic reunion between warriors from the same era 16 17.
Uro interrupts their renewed duel, escalating it into a three-way battle. Ryu and Uro expand their domains, but Ryu increasingly cooperates with Kashimo to remove her from the fight. Their coordinated ambush succeeds when Ryu’s cannon fire exposes Uro to Kashimo’s electrical attack 18 19 20.
Ryu expects a final domain confrontation with Kashimo. Instead, Kashimo triggers the charges accumulated in Ryu during their earlier exchanges, incapacitating him and winning the battle 20.
Survival and Recruitment
Kashimo deliberately detonates only part of the charge inside Ryu, leaving him alive but temporarily unable to move. Ryu accepts Kashimo’s challenge to grow stronger and promises to fight him again after recovering 21.
While Ryu remains injured, Lu Yun covertly uses him to test Cursed Energy Erosion. Ryu mistakes the small shock for an insect bite, unaware that the implanted charge is consuming his cursed energy 22 23.
Lu Yun prevents Angel from killing Ryu and Uro, intending to recruit them. Ryu accepts the invitation to fight Sukuna; Lu Yun subsequently asks Uro to remain with Ryu in Sendai, protect civilians, and provide earned points to Yuta Okkotsu. Their completion of those tasks is not shown 24 25.
Influence on Lu Yun’s Abilities
- Defeating Ryu grants Lu Yun Cursed Energy Discharge, allowing him to fire large cursed-energy blasts without adopting Ryu’s cannon hairstyle 23.
- Lu Yun combines that ability with his Thunder Beast transformation to create the Thunder Beast Bomb. Its destruction of buildings within a two-hundred-meter radius prompts him to reconsider his earlier dismissal of Ryu’s ability 35.
