Background / History

Itsuki was a reader of Jujutsu Kaisen who objected to the handling of Satoru Gojo’s death. He was not a self-described Gojo fanboy; his complaint concerned the characterization and execution of the scene. After posting an abusive, parody-filled rant, he suffered a fatal episode. An immense entity in a dark, dying universe noticed his departing spiritual light, bestowed a power on it, and sent him to another world 1.

He awakened outside Sugisawa Third High School at the beginning of Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro’s story. Initially believing himself powerless, he unsuccessfully tried to summon abilities from Chainsaw Man and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. He intended to leave Japan for China rather than become involved with curses. The awakening of the Death Omen Star’s power reversed that decision, giving him the confidence to intervene and reshape the plot 1.

After protecting students and fighting Sukuna, Itsuki asked Gojo to admit him to Jujutsu High. His claim that he wanted to save lives and protect Earth concealed a more immediate motive: Sukuna’s negative emotions tasted exceptionally good, and he wanted to gather all twenty fingers to savor them. Gojo accepted him, and Principal Yaga subsequently passed his entrance interview despite his flippant answers 5 6.

Appearance

  • Human vessel: A handsome, graceful young man with a slender build rather than a hulking physique 2 43.
  • Hair and face: Black hair, striking “sword-like” eyebrows, and “starry” eyes 28 43.
  • Power manifestation: Purple light flickers in his eyes, while purple-black energy coats his hands or surrounds his body 1 2.
  • Clothing: Does not wear the school uniform when meeting Nobara, explaining that he intends to travel rather than remain at school 8.
  • Altered forms: Can reshape his vessel into monstrous forms and assume the armored form of Mordekaiser 27 46.

Personality

Itsuki is irreverent, theatrical, and openly vain about his strength. He makes elaborate declarations, borrows language from other fictional works, and turns serious encounters into jokes. After receiving his Special Grade ID, he pins it to his chest while insisting that he does not like showing off 1 3 20.

He treats combat as entertainment and frequently prolongs encounters to test himself, train others, or humiliate enemies. His cruelty is particularly apparent against Jogo and Mahito: he keeps Jogo conscious during a beating and takes pleasure in exposing Mahito’s manipulation as a failure. Gojo describes him as someone who treats life like a game and considers nothing off-limits; Nanami believes he could slaughter the higher-ups simply for fun 12 16 26 32.

His willingness to protect people coexists with coercive methods. He shields Sasaki and Iguchi, saves Nanami from an ambush, and refuses to sacrifice allies during a hostage exchange. Yet he also beats Junpei into leaving Mahito and forces weaker students into dangerous training situations 2 10 25 28 36.

Itsuki rejects authority that cannot enforce its demands. He threatens the jujutsu leadership over his promotion and ultimately kills and enslaves Gakuganji. His interest in changing events is not consistently heroic: he also invites Geto to make his plans more chaotic, cruel, and bloody 12 16 46 47.

Abilities & Skills

Death Omen Star Energy and Devouring

Itsuki’s power is distinct from ordinary cursed energy. He attributes it to the negative emotions of celestial bodies—the fear of planets, dying stars, and the universe itself 7 8.

  • Absorbs cursed spirits’ negative emotions and cursed energy to grow 2 11.
  • Creates black vortices that swallow Jogo’s flames 13.
  • Uses purple-black flames to destroy lesser curses 9.
  • Releases an area-wide surge that crushes every Grade 3 spirit in the Goodwill Event forest while deliberately sparing the Grade 2 target 40.
  • Geto interprets his resistance as devouring attacks, kinetic energy, and heat. Geto’s suggestion that simultaneous attacks might overwhelm this ability remains untested in the provided encounter 16.

Conceptual Body and Restoration

Following contact with the Death Omen Star, Itsuki becomes an energy-based, conceptual existence. His visible body is a vessel he can reshape and repair 28.

  • Transforms his body without using Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration 27.
  • Restores the severe chest wound caused by Sukuna’s Dismantle 4.
  • Challenges Mahito’s claim that bodily form is governed by the soul; Mahito cannot readily account for his transformation or affect him as expected 27 28.
  • Can heal another person’s injuries, removing Junpei’s cigarette-burn scars 25.

Physical Strength, Speed, and Combat

Itsuki’s slender vessel possesses enough strength to launch Sukuna through buildings and overwhelm Special Grade curses 4 10.

  • Endures Sukuna’s punches and the Finger Bearer’s cursed-energy barrage 4 10.
  • Survives Jogo and Hanami’s sustained combined assault without visible injury 14.
  • Uses throws, joint control, trips, combinations, and a Step-In Side Kick against Todo 21 22.
  • Defeats multiple students by reading openings, controlling distance, and exploiting their reactions 43 44.
  • His early fighting style is explicitly amateurish despite his claims of deliberately taking hits. Later encounters show precise counters and controlled hand-to-hand technique 5 21 44.

Cursed-Energy Imitation

With Gojo’s help, Itsuki learns to reproduce cursed-energy fluctuations using Death Omen Star energy. He has no innate cursed technique of his own 8.

  • Initially adopts imitation to avoid being mistaken for someone with a heavenly restriction 8.
  • Can turn the conversion off, allowing him to move without a detectable cursed-energy signal 14.
  • His excessive simulated output immobilizes Nobara during a rescue, demonstrating poor control over its pressure at that point 8.
  • Imitation does not automatically bypass Gojo’s Limitless; his attempt to reach Gojo’s hand is stopped 7.

Rhaast and Rift Shadow

Itsuki commands Rhaast, a living scythe and bloodthirsty demon forged from the remains of a dead star 4 7.

  • Allows Rhaast to take control of his vessel during the fight with Sukuna, then reclaims control 4 5.
  • Uses Giant Scythe Sweep, cutting through surrounding buildings 5.
  • Uses Rift Shadow after marking an opponent: he becomes untargetable, enters the opponent’s body, and attacks from within. He escapes Malevolent Shrine this way and emerges through Sukuna’s chest 5.
  • Summons Rhaast as a separate combatant to keep Geto and the other curses from interrupting his fight 15.
  • Can return Rhaast to the Void Realm and compel obedience through his authority as Lord of the Death Star 5 17.

Iceborn Power

Itsuki manifests intense frost associated with Lissandra, the master of the Iceborn bloodline 14.

  • Extinguishes flames and freezes the ruined battlefield after Jogo and Hanami’s assault 14.
  • Launches a colossal ice attack that Jogo’s fire and Hanami’s trees fail to stop 15.
  • Converts ice shattered by Geto’s Uzumaki into a hailstorm 15.
  • Uses ice to block Jogo’s flames and prevent him from intervening against Rhaast 15.

Sako’s Impersonation and Shared Control

Itsuki orchestrates a deception using Death Omen Star Sako, the Demon Jester. Sako impersonates Junpei with his memories and personality while the real Junpei remains hidden 32.

  • Takes control of Sako’s disguised body when needed 32.
  • Alternates between Sako’s indifference, Junpei’s timid personality, and his own mockery 32.
  • Turns Mahito’s intended hostage into an attacker wielding a purple-black dagger 31.
  • Steadies Yuji after Sako’s revealed presence temporarily stops his heart 32.

Mordekaiser and Undead Servitude

Itsuki assumes the armored form of Death Omen Star Mordekaiser during his confrontation with Gakuganji 46.

  • Uses spectral or astral hands to tear apart Juzo Kumiya, seize Gakuganji, and crush three supporting sorcerers 46.
  • Breaks through Gakuganji’s sound-based cursed-energy attacks 46.
  • Uses Nightfall to resurrect Gakuganji and the three men as undead servants 46.
  • Forces the resurrected Gakuganji to kneel and obey despite his continued resentment 46 47.

Foreknowledge and Tactical Guidance

Itsuki’s knowledge of the original story lets him anticipate threats and identify information unavailable to his companions 3 12 20.

  • Recognizes Yuji’s suitability as Sukuna’s vessel before Gojo evaluates him 3.
  • Explains Megumi’s Ten Shadows inheritance and expresses interest in testing Mahoraga’s adaptability 9.
  • Tells Megumi about Toji’s death and the cursed technique affecting Tsumiki 12.
  • Explains binding vows, Cursed Technique Disclosure, and the risks of casually yielding control to Sukuna 26.
  • Coaches Yuji on observation and Divergent Fist’s limitations, while urging Megumi to develop a Domain rather than rely on a suicidal last resort 44 45.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Rhaast — A blood-red scythe nearly as tall as a person, with a curved shaft, enormous blade, malicious eye, and independent voice. Itsuki explicitly states that it is a demon, not a cursed tool 4 7.
  • Special Grade student ID — Proof of his official rank and a favored object for boasting. He lends it to Yuji before sparring with Todo and later discovers that Yuji has left with it 20 21 23.
  • Sukuna’s fingers — Handles the first finger, encourages Yuji to consume it, and later gives him the finger recovered from the detention-center curse 3 12.

Relationships

  • Satoru Gojo — Teacher and sponsor. Admits him to Jujutsu High, helps him imitate cursed energy, and supports his Special Grade recognition. Their interactions are marked by mutual teasing and curiosity about each other’s powers 5 7 8 20.
  • Yuji Itadori — Classmate, ally, and frequent training target. Itsuki helps him become Sukuna’s vessel, protects his companions, and pushes him to improve, but also encourages him to consider Sukuna’s suspicious binding-vow offer 3 20 36 44.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Classmate and informal pupil. Megumi initially considers him a monster, but asks Gojo to protect him. Itsuki encourages his Ten Shadows development and gives him information about his family 2 5 9 12.
  • Nobara Kugisaki — Classmate. Rescues her and a child during her first test, although his aura also immobilizes her. She later scolds him with Yuji and Megumi for leaving her behind at the detention center 8 12.
  • Rhaast — Subordinate Death Omen Star and weapon partner. Itsuki permits violence against curses but forbids interference with his plans or an uncontrolled human massacre 4 15 17.
  • Sako — Death Omen Star subordinate whose impersonation Itsuki uses to deceive Mahito and conceal the real Junpei 32.
  • Junpei Yoshino — A bullied student he recruits and removes from Mahito’s influence. Itsuki heals his scars and hides him while Sako assumes his identity 24 25 32.
  • Kento Nanami — Mission partner. Itsuki saves him from a curse ambush and later secures his release from captivity, but Nanami remains disturbed by his cruelty 26 28 36.
  • Aoi Todo — Sparring opponent. Itsuki defeats him decisively and recognizes his tactical intelligence; Todo later challenges him alongside Yuji 21 22 41.
  • Maki Zenin — Fellow student whose weapon skills he praises. He suggests seeking Naobito’s help with her inability to see curses unaided and reminds her to obtain promotion recommendations 44 49.
  • Ryomen Sukuna — Opponent and prized source of negative emotions. Itsuki wants him restored to twenty fingers for their taste, while Sukuna resents his taunts and interference 5 7 20.
  • Jogo and Mahito — Enemies he repeatedly overpowers and humiliates. Their hatred contributes to the curse group’s explicit plan to kill him 16 32 39.
  • Suguru Geto / the “brain” — Enemy strategist whose plans Itsuki appears to understand. Itsuki invites him to escalate the chaos; the strategist regards Itsuki’s unknown abilities as a major obstacle 16 34 39.
  • Yoshinobu Gakuganji — Institutional opponent turned undead servant. Blocks his Special Grade recommendation before being killed, resurrected, and forced into obedience 19 20 46 47.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sugisawa School and Sukuna’s Awakening

Itsuki deliberately removes the finger’s seals, turning the resulting curse invasion into a feeding opportunity while shielding Sasaki and Iguchi. He then encourages Yuji to eat the finger and confronts the newly manifested Sukuna. Their fight introduces Rhaast and Rift Shadow before Itsuki ends it by asking Yuji to reclaim control 2 3 4 5.

Detention-Center Mission

Itsuki makes the Finger Bearer a training opponent for Yuji and Megumi, first mutilating it to reduce the danger. When Megumi’s coordinated shikigami assault fails to finish it, Itsuki kills and consumes it himself. His intervention prevents Yuji’s original death at the detention center, removing the resurrection leverage Sukuna would otherwise have used to obtain a binding vow 9 10 11 20.

Confrontation with Geto’s Curse Group

After overhearing their plans in a café, Itsuki fights Jogo and Hanami, reveals Iceborn power, and summons Rhaast independently. He interrupts Jogo’s Domain Expansion and leaves him alive after a prolonged beating. Rather than dismantle the group’s scheme, he urges Geto to make it more extreme 13 14 15 16.

Junpei and Mahito

Itsuki approaches Junpei before the theater incident, then pulls him away from Mahito after his recruitment. He replaces Junpei with Sako, allowing Mahito to believe his manipulation is succeeding. The apparent killing of Nagi involves a lookalike body left in her place, and the later reveal identifies the disguised “Junpei” as Sako rather than the real boy 24 25 30 32.

At Rizakura High, the disguised hostage attacks Mahito, exposing Itsuki’s trap. Itsuki humiliates the curse and later permits a hostage exchange to recover Nanami and Ino. He nevertheless arranges another demonic attack on the departing curses; Rhaast’s subsequent killing of Dagon helps turn their revenge against him into a central objective 31 32 36 39.

Goodwill Event and Gakuganji’s Subjugation

Itsuki eliminates every Grade 3 target and hides the Grade 2 spirit, forcing the other students to challenge him. He defeats Miwa and multiple stronger students while offering pointed assessments of their weaknesses 40 41 43 44.

During the enemy invasion, he leaves Hanami to the students and confronts Gakuganji. As Mordekaiser, he kills the principal and his supporters, then resurrects them as servants. He later returns to the students, rescues Megumi from Hanami’s roots, and warns the group away from Gojo’s approaching Purple 45 46 47 49.

Afterward, Itsuki argues that the Goodwill Event should continue so the students gain experience and can survive even if Gojo is defeated. The resumed competition becomes baseball rather than the further fights he proposes 50.
