Family Loss and Team 7

Sasuke describes losing his entire family in a single night. His desire to avenge that loss by killing Itachi becomes the reason he pursues greater power, eventually placing revenge above his ties to Konoha 22 45.

After graduation, he joins Team 7 alongside Sakura and Sai, with Kakashi as their instructor. Naruto is trained separately by Jiraiya and only accompanies the team on particular assignments 1 2.

Land of Waves

During the escort mission for Tazuna, Sasuke and Sai subdue one of the Demon Brothers while Naruto handles the other. Sasuke agrees to continue after the mission’s concealed danger is exposed, refusing to leave his first C-rank assignment unfinished 3.

Zabuza’s killing intent initially terrifies him so severely that he raises a kunai toward his own throat; Kakashi intervenes. Sasuke nevertheless steps forward to support Naruto’s rescue plan when Kakashi is trapped in a water prison, providing covering attacks with Sai 3.

In the later bridge battle, Haku traps Sasuke inside the Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals. His Great Fireball Technique cannot destroy the mirrors, but the pressure of the fight awakens his Sharingan. Its strain and Haku’s needle attacks leave him overwhelmed before Naruto arrives 6.

Chunin Exams and Konoha Invasion

Before the exams, Sasuke ignores Naruto’s warning about Rock Lee and is quickly defeated. In the Forest of Death, Orochimaru marks him with a Cursed Seal. Despite the seal’s painful reaction to chakra use, Sasuke defeats Akado Yoroi in the preliminaries with the Lion Combo, after which Kakashi takes him away to stabilize the mark 9 12 13.

Kakashi’s subsequent training gives Sasuke substantially greater speed and Chidori. In his finals match, he pierces Gaara’s sand sphere and wounds him. The invasion interrupts the match, and Genma orders Sasuke to pursue the retreating Sunagakure siblings 19.

Gaara later overwhelms him, forcing Naruto to rescue him from a sand attack. Watching Naruto battle Gaara and Shukaku intensifies Sasuke’s jealousy and his fear that he has not grown strong enough to kill Itachi. He initially refuses to retreat because he wants to measure Naruto’s strength, but eventually obeys Pakkun’s order 21 22.

Hospital Confrontation and Defection

Sasuke is hospitalized following a mental attack. After awakening, he challenges Naruto to fight immediately and throws a kunai when Naruto tries to leave. Their rooftop spar escalates when Naruto outmaneuvers his Sharingan with a concealed clone. Sasuke responds with Chidori, prompting Kakashi and Jiraiya to intervene before it collides with Naruto’s Rasengan 34 39 40.

Orochimaru’s four followers plan to persuade Sasuke with the promise of power rather than simply abduct him. That night, he leaves Konoha with an Otogakure squad. Tsunade orders Naruto and Shikamaru to assemble a retrieval team, but the Sound ninja repeatedly split off to delay the pursuit while transporting Sasuke in a coffin 41 42 43.

After the ritual is completed, Sasuke emerges transformed, ignores Naruto, and continues toward Orochimaru 44.

Valley of the End

Naruto catches Sasuke at the Valley of the End and warns that Orochimaru intends to take his body. Sasuke refuses to return, arguing that Naruto cannot understand his family’s slaughter. Their fight escalates through Sasuke’s first-stage Cursed Seal, a Rasengan–Chidori clash, and a Chidori strike through Naruto’s chest 45.

Naruto heals and manifests a one-tail cloak. Sasuke activates the Cursed Seal’s second state and briefly closes the gap, but Naruto’s second tail gives him decisive superiority. A massive chakra arm knocks Sasuke unconscious and deactivates his seal 45 46.

Kabuto prevents Naruto from carrying Sasuke back to Konoha. After waking, Sasuke drives another Chidori into the exhausted Naruto’s chest and orders Kabuto to throw him into the river. Sasuke leaves, and the retrieval mission fails. Although Konoha initially believes Naruto dead, Jiraiya later reveals that he survived 47 48 49.

Sasuke places great importance on his Uchiha heritage and repeatedly treats it as proof that he deserves superiority. Gaara’s dismissal of him provokes an aggressive response, while Naruto’s improvement feels to him like an affront to his standing as an elite. During their rooftop fight, he explicitly belittles Naruto for lacking a clan 19 21 40.

He is determined under pressure: he supports the attempt to free Kakashi, continues fighting Haku despite mounting injuries, and wins against Yoroi while struggling with the Cursed Seal. That resolve becomes increasingly tied to his fixation on revenge rather than teamwork 3 6 13 22.

His resentment eventually overrides restraint. He uses an assassination technique against Naruto during a spar, refuses to abandon Orochimaru despite warnings about becoming a vessel, and attacks Naruto again after Kabuto has left him defenseless 40 45 47.
