Background / History

Earlier responsibilities

Jiraiya studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside his fellow Sannin, Tsunade and Orochimaru. He later taught Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, whom he calls his finest student 1 2 8 13.

Minato and Kushina entrusted Naruto to him. Jiraiya says Konoha’s higher-ups previously refused to let him take Naruto along when he left on missions and intelligence work. He initially intended to begin teaching his godson a year later, or after Naruto’s first Chunin Exams 1.

Taking Naruto as his student

After witnessing Naruto defeat Mizuki, Jiraiya advances his plans and claims Naruto as his personal student. He rejects a jonin’s suggestion that he choose Sasuke instead, defending Naruto’s perseverance and arguing that the boy needs help more than the favored Uchiha does 1.

His first lesson exposes Naruto’s weak taijutsu by making him fight five of his own shadow clones. Following the Land of Waves mission, Jiraiya explains why Naruto’s anger and grief triggered an involuntary release of Nine-Tails chakra. He resumes control training and obtains Hiruzen’s approval for Naruto to enter the Chunin Exams alone 7.

He accepts Naruto’s clone-assisted Rasengan method rather than insisting on conventional execution. Jiraiya declines an Anbu escort and takes Naruto on the search for Tsunade. Before departing, he helps Naruto recover his resolve by urging him to honor Hiruzen through becoming stronger and protecting those he loves 24.

Tsunade drugs Jiraiya before meeting Orochimaru, leaving him physically weak and disrupting his chakra. After Shizune treats him, he accompanies the others to Tsunade’s aid and fights Orochimaru while Naruto confronts Kabuto. The confrontation ends with Tsunade accepting the Hokage position and Orochimaru retreating 28 29 30.

Further training and Naruto’s rescue

Jiraiya takes an interest in Naruto and Yugito’s unusually synchronized combination ninjutsu, inviting Yugito to spar with them to develop their teamwork. Back in Konoha, he recruits the Anbu operative Sparrow to construct a waterfall for Naruto’s Wind Release training. He later intervenes with Kakashi when Naruto and Sasuke’s rooftop spar escalates into a potentially lethal clash 33 37 38 40.

While visiting Mount Myōboku to discuss Naruto’s future training, Jiraiya learns that Naruto’s name is disappearing from the summoning contract. Nearly in tears, he begs the toads to save him.
