Power Progression
The documented milestones concern Orochimaru’s established strength, appointments, and acquisition of forbidden techniques. His development of life-extension ninjutsu does not establish unlimited immortality.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kage-level shinobi — established baseline | 20 21 | Chihane considers him exceptionally difficult to kill. Their assessment fight ends before Orochimaru resorts to his strongest ninjutsu and forbidden techniques. |
| Chihane’s Jonin team leader | 22 | Becomes Chihane’s teacher following the academy team assignments; begins examining his physique and directing his training. |
| Fourth Hokage — political appointment | 133 140 141 | Wins the village’s selection vote, receives the Daimyo’s appointment letter, and formally takes office. This is an office rather than a new combat tier. |
| Impure World Reincarnation | 148 149 | Studies the technique in the Scroll of Seals and successfully summons Tobirama Senju as a research partner. |
| Successful soul-transfer experiment | 179 | An experiment involving a prisoner and a wild boar produces a revived boar, validating the direction of his immortality research. |

Background / History
Orochimaru became Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student after graduating from the Ninja Academy. By the beginning of the war against Iwagakure, their teacher–student relationship had lasted more than twenty years 19 28.
During the Second Shinobi World War, he fought alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade against Hanzō of Amegakure and earned his place among the Sannin. He also witnessed Kumogakure’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode, later using his understanding of its principles to guide Chihane’s training 23.
Hiruko grew up alongside the three Sannin and was as close to them as a sibling. When Hiruzen ordered Hiruko killed for researching forbidden ninjutsu, Orochimaru helped him escape. Years later, as Hokage, he sought Hiruko’s return as a researcher rather than an enemy 189 191.
Appearance
- Pale face: Usually described as sinister, though the villagers see him as dignified and kindly during his inauguration 141.
- Purple eyeshadow and slit pupils: His eyes are explicitly compared to those of a snake 127 189.
- Long hair: He brushes aside the hair hanging beside his ear while recalling Hiruko 189.
- Sinister smile: A recurring expression when observing talent, questioning Chihane, or anticipating political developments 16 22 143.
- No forehead protector: He is specifically noted not to wear one when introducing himself to the reincarnated Tobirama 149.
Personality
Orochimaru is driven by scientific curiosity and the pursuit of immortality. He believes that bodies inevitably decay and that the soul offers the more promising route to lasting life. New techniques and unusual constitutions excite him more than routine administration; after spending a year developing conveniences for Konoha, he insists on returning to immortality research 23 148.
His research methods are ruthless. He preserves human organs, experiments on captives and death-row prisoners, and treats repeated failures as reasons to continue rather than abandon a project. Nevertheless, he stops Chihane’s electrical training when the student reaches his limit, showing that his willingness to expose others to danger does not eliminate concern for them 22 26 96 150 179.
He retains strong emotional attachments in this story. He gently comforts Anko, remains moved by Hiruzen despite their political conflict, and is prepared to face the Five Kage Summit without expecting to return alive if doing so protects Chihane. Jiraiya and Tsunade’s support also matters deeply to him 109 118 121 141.
Politically, Orochimaru is patient and calculating. He deliberately makes Chihane’s strength visible within Konoha, bargains with the Uchiha for support, and later uses allies to steer public opinion. His fondness for teasing Chihane appears in both discussions of paperwork and explanations of possible medical solutions to the Eight Gates 27 29 126 143 144.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Orochimaru holds a summoning contract with Dragon-Snake Cave and uses snakes for direct attacks, battlefield support, and mobility 46.
- Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases several venomous snakes from his hand to attack an opponent 20 234.
- Winding Evil Snake: Summons a massive snake; uses it both against Chihane and to launch him toward Kitsuchi during battle 21 32.
- Manda: Can summon Manda to oppose a transformed tailed beast temporarily. He also summons Manda when confronting the alien warships above Konoha 46 229.
- Limit: The psychic strategist in Bal’s army immobilizes his attacking snakes with an invisible force 234.
Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Sealing
His broad command of ninjutsu, genjutsu, forbidden techniques, and sealing makes him a dangerous opponent even for a perfect jinchūriki 46.
| Technique / Skill | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Hell Viewing Technique | Attempts to confuse Chihane with genjutsu; Chihane resists it 20 21. |
| Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique | Uses the A-rank technique during Chihane’s assessment 20. |
| Substitution Technique | Replaces himself after recognizing Chihane’s resistance to genjutsu 21. |
| Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall | Briefly obstructs Chihane’s sword attack 21. |
| Body Flicker Technique | Creates distance and ends the assessment fight 21. |
| Rashomon Technique | Holds back the enormous hills created by Kitsuchi’s Mountain Earth Technique 32. |
| Sealing expertise | Helps deter Han, whose jinchūriki abilities make sealing specialists particularly threatening 46. |
Body Manipulation and Survival
Orochimaru can alter his body in ways that make conventional lethal injuries unreliable 20 234.
- Extends his neck inhumanly and launches a Kusanagi Sword from his mouth 234.
- After being impaled and pinned by a stone spear, produces a fresh body through his mouth and emerges apparently unharmed 234.
- His recovery occurs after Tsunade forces the psychic attacker to retreat, freeing him from the restraining force 234.
- This demonstrated survival method is distinct from his research into Living Corpse Reincarnation; the passages do not establish that he personally performs a soul transfer 189 234.
Human Anatomy and Kekkei Genkai Research
Orochimaru conducts detailed physical examinations, collects biological samples, and designs training around the results 23.
- Measures Chihane’s physique and collects blood, skin, and hair for analysis 23.
- Studies the captive Takei Sōchin and Minazuki Izumi and their Land of Water kekkei genkai 96.
- Works with Hashirama’s cells; his experiments with Danzo produce Yamato, a successful Wood Release subject later assigned to Konoha’s construction department 177.
- Determines experimentally that combining ordinary water- and earth-nature chakra does not reproduce Hashirama’s Wood Release. He attributes it to an unusually active chakra within Hashirama’s body 177.
- Cannot reproduce that extraordinary chakra or reverse-engineer chakra’s origin to manufacture artificial chakra 177.
Training and Technique Development
Orochimaru identifies Chihane’s weaknesses in speed, range, and offensive variety, rather than judging him solely by his exceptional strength 23.
- Lightning Release Chakra Mode research: Does not know Kumogakure’s training method, but proposes developing an equivalent from its general principles. Uses electrical equipment and recorded measurements during repeated experiments 23 26.
- Chakra shortage: Suggests Tsunade’s Yin Seal as a way for Chihane to accumulate chakra outside battle 23.
- Hashirama-cell transplantation: Considers it as another solution but initially rejects it because the experiments are immature and his trust in Chihane remains incomplete 23.
- Eight Gates analysis: Recognizes the technique as unlocking the body’s “gene locks” and studies Chihane and Might Duy in combat 112 113.
Eight Gates of Death Research
Orochimaru develops a testing plan aimed at reducing the Gate of Death’s lethal consequences, working with Tsunade’s medical expertise 143 144.
- Proposes protecting and repairing the heart with Yin Healing Wound Destruction, but judges Chihane incapable of the required precise chakra control 144.
- Instead arranges instrument-monitored trials: Chihane opens the Gate of Death, closes it as damage begins, and receives treatment afterward 144.
- Uses Healing Resuscitation Regeneration Technique, performed by Tsunade, to reconstruct damaged tissue between trials 144.
- Excludes Might Duy because his accumulated injuries make participation unsafe 144.
- The method requires repeated painful injuries and recovery; the supplied passages show the testing program beginning, not a completed, risk-free modification 144.
Soul Research and Life Extension
Orochimaru recruits Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation to investigate immortality through the soul 148 149.
- Measures changes in a dying prisoner’s weight as evidence of the soul leaving the body 150.
- Reaches the soul-transfer testing stage while remaining in Konoha during the Chunin Exams 151.
- Co-develops Living Corpse Reincarnation, allowing a sufficiently strong soul to occupy another body and extend its lifespan 179 189.
- Explicitly acknowledges that the technique has drawbacks and does not permit unlimited reincarnation 189.
- Reports that attempts at true resurrection have failed; restoring Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation is not equivalent to permanently returning a dead person to ordinary life 149 189.
Engineering
Given a rough explanation of a machine’s principles, Orochimaru can work backward to construct it 148.
- Develops refrigerators, electric lights, and other conveniences for Konoha 147 148.
- Dedicates a year to improving villagers’ daily lives before resuming his principal immortality project 148.
- Investigates captured alien technology and identifies planetary cores as the warships’ fuel source 239.
- Considers Nine-Tails chakra a possible substitute but warns that it could run out during space travel 239.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Swords — Owns multiple exceptionally durable blades. Gives one to Chihane and later uses another as a mouth-launched weapon against Bal’s strategist 22 234.
- Sealing scrolls — Stores important objects and information in scrolls kept inside his mouth, including Chihane’s sword and Hiruko’s information 22 189.
- Hidden laboratory — Located within a mountain on Konoha’s outskirts, accessed through a passage opened with hand seals 22 109.
- Preserved specimens — Keeps labeled human material associated with Shikotsumyaku, Sharingan, Ice Release, and other research subjects 149.
- Research instruments — Uses electrical generators, monitoring equipment, and measurement devices in physical-conditioning and soul experiments 26 144 150.
- Konoha’s forbidden-technique archive — Accesses the secret collection beneath the Hokage Building while planning Chihane’s Eight Gates experiments 144.
Relationships
- Chihane Hatake / Chihane — Student, principal supporter, and research participant. Their initially wary relationship becomes one of deep trust; Orochimaru risks his life to protect him, while Chihane supports his research and saves him from Danzo’s final attack 22 118 133 148.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and predecessor. Hiruzen promises him the Hokage position while maneuvering to retain control and favor Minato. Orochimaru eventually opposes him, but remains emotionally attached and later entrusts him with routine administration 19 20 109 116 141 143.
- Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin and longstanding companion. Volunteers to accompany him to the Five Kage Summit, though Orochimaru frequently finds his impulsiveness frustrating 118 227.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin, political supporter, and medical research partner. Insists on joining the summit intervention and frees him from the alien strategist’s psychic restraint 118 144 234.
- Mitaraishi Anko — New disciple and war orphan. Orochimaru comforts her gently when she becomes frightened around Chihane 109.
- Tobirama Senju — Reincarnated research partner and eventual Research Department director. Their collaboration produces Living Corpse Reincarnation, although Orochimaru insists that Tobirama’s former office does not grant him authority over the current village 149 177 189.
- Uchiha Kageyama — Political ally recruited through promises of Uchiha participation in village leadership and training for his grandson. Dies fighting Iwa shinobi 29 109.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Early supporter who helps shape public opinion in Orochimaru’s favor, later a conspirator seeking his removal. Orochimaru nevertheless limits his punishment before reducing the clan’s institutional power 126 195 210 212.
- Minato Namikaze — Rival Hokage candidate whom Orochimaru respects and does not wish to harm. Later serves under his administration and handles investigations 42 144 177.
- Kakashi Hatake — Trusted ANBU stationed in his office. Along with Chihane, belongs to the pair of people Orochimaru trusts most 144.
- Might Duy — Collaborator in Eight Gates research whose inherited technique earns Orochimaru’s admiration 109 113.
- Hiruko — Childhood friend and fellow forbidden-technique researcher. Orochimaru helps him escape execution, then sends Chihane to bring him back safely for the Research Department 189 191.
- Danzo — Political opponent and former collaborator in human experimentation. Attacks Orochimaru with the Reverse Four Symbols Seal after losing the Hokage selection; Chihane intervenes 19 133 177.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Teaching Chihane
After watching Chihane defeat Makoto Uchiha, Orochimaru expresses interest in leading his team. Hiruzen assigns the boy to him, and Orochimaru conducts an unannounced combat assessment before formally becoming his teacher 16 19 20 21 22.
He reassures Chihane that Sakumo’s past assistance gives him reason not to harm the boy, gifts him a Kusanagi Sword, and begins laboratory examinations and experimental training. Their electrical-conditioning project becomes an early foundation of their working relationship 22 23 26.
Command Against Iwagakure
Hiruzen assigns Orochimaru only ten Jonin and two thousand Chunin and Genin while promising him the Hokage position if he wins. Suspicious of the arrangement, Orochimaru secures Uchiha support through an agreement with Kageyama 28 29.
On the front, he coordinates attacks with Chihane, receives captured supplies, and directs massed fire-and-wind combination ninjutsu. After Chihane kills Kitsuchi and Minato kills Higashishibito, he stops Konoha’s pursuit as Han withdraws. The victory gives him a reputation and loyal following that Hiruzen can no longer easily control 32 41 45 46 48.
Five Kage Summit and Hokage Selection
When political attacks threaten Chihane, Orochimaru resolves to fight back against Hiruzen. He plans to confront the summit alone, but Jiraiya and Tsunade insist on accompanying him. At the gathering, he offers to take his student’s place despite having little confidence that he will survive 116 118 121.
The crisis ends with Orochimaru and Chihane celebrated as village heroes. Fugaku and their supporters guide the resulting public support toward Orochimaru’s candidacy. He wins the selection vote, survives Danzo’s attack through Chihane’s intervention, obtains the Daimyo’s approval, and becomes Fourth Hokage 126 133 140 141.
Research and Administrative Reform
To escape the paperwork consuming his time, Orochimaru returns routine administration to Hiruzen and resumes research. His projects include the Eight Gates trials, household inventions, Tobirama’s reincarnation, and the development of Living Corpse Reincarnation 143 144 148 149 189.
He establishes a Research Department under Tobirama and approves its headquarters on Back Mountain. Later, amid conflict with Fugaku and Hiruzen, he creates the Internal Affairs Department under Shikaku Nara, transfers Hiruzen’s administrative authority to it, and appoints Chiriku deputy chief of the Military Police with oversight powers 189 212.
Alien Invasion and the Dragon Vein
When five warships demand Konoha’s immortality researcher, Orochimaru pretends to cooperate while civilians evacuate. He later fights Bal’s psychic strategist, survives impalement, and recovers after Tsunade breaks the enemy’s control 229 234.
Afterward, he studies a Four-Armed Race corpse and the captured warships. He warns Chihane about the technological gap and the need for planetary-core fuel. Chihane’s proposal to use the Dragon Vein’s space-and-time-distorting chakra gives him an alternative to collecting all nine tailed beasts 239.
