Background / History
Kakashi is Sakumo Hatake's younger son and Chihane's younger brother. His early achievements sharply contrasted with Chihane's reputation as the Academy's “Dead Last,” leading many villagers to regard Kakashi as Konoha's future White Fang 1.
Sakumo's suicide following malicious rumors profoundly changed Kakashi. He became withdrawn, sensitive to others' judgments, and determined to complete missions regardless of his own safety. Chihane's presence kept him from isolating himself completely, but Kakashi remained afraid of people invoking their father's abandoned mission and death 5.
Kakashi trained under Minato Namikaze before Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara joined Minato's team. He later pursued the goal of inheriting White Fang's title and restoring the Hatake Clan's glory, rather than leaving his father's reputation behind 10 22 30 43.
Appearance
Kakashi closely resembles Chihane, but is shorter and less muscular than his older brother in their early appearances 2 5.
- Hair: Long silver hair 5.
- Face covering: Wears a mask 5.
- Signature weapon: Carries the White Fang short sword on his back 43.
- Temporary accessory: Chihane ties his green bandana around Kakashi's head before returning from the war front 49.
Personality
Kakashi acts like a small adult from childhood: reserved, proud, and reluctant to reveal vulnerability. He worries about Chihane's reckless training while maintaining a petulant manner, and dislikes having his head touched 5 183.
His calm, analytical approach makes him a meticulous tactician, but Chihane identifies a lack of confidence beneath it. Against his brother, Kakashi initially seeks to force the use of stronger techniques rather than seriously considering victory. Chihane believes this reliance on calculation and ambush prevents him from advancing as a swordsman 182.
After his Swordmaster breakthrough, Kakashi rejects the comfort of living under Chihane's protection and seeks dangerous work to temper himself. Mastering Iron-Cutting Swordsmanship also makes him markedly more arrogant: he begins believing nobody except Chihane can match him, despite gaps in his experience and knowledge 183 200.
His loyalty can override professional obligations. Upon learning of Obito's defection, he abandons his current assignment to pursue him; during the resulting confrontation, he remains determined to bring Obito home while also protecting his companions 188 200 204.
Abilities & Skills
Hatake / White Fang Swordsmanship
Kakashi inherits his clan's sword tradition and combines the White Fang short sword with speed, chakra enhancement, and draw-slash techniques 35 182 204.
- Wind-chakra enhancement: Channels wind-nature chakra into White Fang during close combat 182.
- High-speed movement: Crosses dozens of meters almost instantly while attacking Chihane 182.
- Iai: Uses a lethal draw-slash stance whose offensive power comes at the cost of defense 204.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Twenty-Four Bridges Under the Moonlight | Produces multiple apparent slashes around the target; Chihane identifies only one as real during their spar 182. |
| Twenty-Four Bridges Under the Moonlight—Amateur Flute Player | Used when Akatsuki Jonin attack Kakashi and Might Guy with massed ninjutsu 201. |
| Silver Wolf Cart | Releases a Flying Slash that transforms into a giant silver wolf 202. |
| Silver Flash | A modified White Fang technique replicated from swordsmanship in Jiraiya's book. Breaks through Obito's Susanoo defense, but cannot hit his intangible body 204. |
Iron-Cutting Swordsmanship
By listening to the breathing of all things, Kakashi perceives weaknesses and gaps in bodies and techniques 200.
- Cuts through powerful ninjutsu and forbidden techniques during Root assassination missions 200.
- Makes the durable bodies of Might Guy and Chiriku vulnerable to his blade, allowing him to defeat them together in sparring 200.
- Greatly increases his offensive power, but does not bypass every defense: Obito's Susanoo blocks twenty-four Flying Slashes, and his intangibility defeats Silver Flash's attempted hit 203 204.
Five-Nature Ninjutsu and Chakra Reserves
Kakashi masters all five chakra natures, giving him a broad range of offensive options alongside swordsmanship 183.
- Earth-wall defense: Stops all sixteen shuriken in Itachi's coordinated attack 152.
- Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu: Hides underground, grabs Chihane's ankle, and pulls his apparent opponent beneath the earth 182.
- Shadow Clones: Allocates most of his chakra to a clone to disguise his real body's underground ambush 182.
- Chakra reserves: Because he never receives Obito's Sharingan, he retains reserves greater than those of most ninja, though below the Uzumaki Clan's 183.
- Resource limit: His heavily supplied Shadow Clone leaves him with no chakra to continue once Chihane reveals that his own combatant was also a clone 182.
Genjutsu and Taijutsu
Kakashi uses an illusion to make Itachi believe they are fighting at close range, despite Itachi's Two-Tomoe Sharingan 152.
- Genjutsu deception: Itachi attacks empty air while believing he is defeating Kakashi 152.
- Thousand Years of Death: Finishes their bout with the E-rank taijutsu attributed to Sakumo, sending Itachi flying out of sight 152.
- Genjutsu vulnerability: Earlier, Shinku Yuhi's Fox in the Heart Technique traps Kakashi overnight until its sustaining chakra runs out 16.
Tactical and Assassination Skills
Kakashi tailors plans to his opponents and gains practical assassination experience through Root 182 200 202.
- Uses clones, underground movement, and immediate follow-up attacks rather than pausing to assume victory 182.
- Cooperates with Might Guy against Nagato, contributing sword attacks while Guy pressures the Six Paths 202 203.
- Projects killing intent to demonstrate the danger facing Genma and Ebisu 200.
- Lacks the experience to recognize Nagato's rain-based surveillance, leaving his group's movements exposed 200.
- Attempts hand-signal coordination with Guy, who misinterprets his instructions 202.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang short sword — His father's signature weapon and Kakashi's principal blade. The sword apparently broken during his spar with Chihane belongs to a Shadow Clone; the real weapon remains intact 35 43 182.
- Wooden practice swords — Used in swordsmanship sparring with Chihane at the Hatake residence 24.
- Zoro's green bandana — Given to him by Chihane as a lucky bandana, with the claim that wearing it would ease sword training 49.
- Jiraiya's books — Gives The Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Shinobi to Obito, later returns Make Out Paradise to Chihane, and reproduces swordsmanship learned from Jiraiya's writing 35 184 204.
Relationships
- Chihane Hatake — Older brother, protector, and swordsmanship mentor. Their mutual concern coexists with teasing and punishing sparring; Kakashi eventually resolves to stop living in Chihane's shadow 5 24 49 182 183.
- Sakumo Hatake — Deceased father and model for Kakashi's ambition. Kakashi carries his blade and wants to restore his White Fang title and the clan's glory 5 30 43.
- Minato Namikaze — Teacher and later ANBU superior. Provides training, confirms Kakashi's alibi during the Mist scout investigation, and agrees to special training after his defeat by Chihane 10 11 44 134 183.
- Rin Nohara — Teammate and girlfriend. Their relationship develops with Chihane's encouragement; Kakashi becomes instinctively protective of her and comforts her at Obito's bedside 24 26 108 172.
- Obito Uchiha — Teammate, friend, and rival. Moves into the lonely Hatake residence after Chihane leaves; his later defection prompts Kakashi's determined but unsuccessful retrieval attempt 35 188 200 204.
- Might Guy — Friend, sparring rival, and partner in the Amegakure mission. Kakashi carries him out after the battle leaves him exhausted 200 202 204.
- Uchiha Itachi — Junior trainee and sparring opponent. Kakashi decisively defeats him through Earth Release, genjutsu, and Thousand Years of Death 149 152.
- Orochimaru — One of Kakashi's powerful instructors and a Hokage who trusts the Hatake brothers. Assigns Kakashi to supervise Hiruzen 144 182.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Protects Kakashi from Danzo's recruitment; later becomes the subject of Kakashi's oversight in the Hokage's Office 11 144.
- Shimura Danzō — Seeks to take control of Kakashi and train him beyond Sakumo. Hiruzen refuses, condemning the prospect of turning Sakumo's son into an emotionless weapon 11.
- Shinku Yuhi — Family acquaintance whose discipline Kakashi has experienced repeatedly. Accidentally leaves him trapped in genjutsu while searching for Chihane 16.

- Returns from the war steadier and visibly protective of Rin 108.
ANBU Service and Swordmaster Breakthrough
