Background / History
Childhood in the Psychiatric Hospital
Liang Chen was born to Sun Yan and Liang Shi. According to Butler Qian, Liang Shi paid Sun Yan to terminate her pregnancy before his marriage to a woman of equal social standing. Sun Yan instead went abroad, gave birth, and later tried unsuccessfully to use Liang Chen’s parentage to secure a place in the Liang Family 144.
Sun Yan called her son a monster and placed him in a psychiatric hospital, where he grew up without attending school. Her infrequent visits concerned money or paternity tests rather than his welfare. A sympathetic nurse cared for him and regarded him as a polite, good-natured child; he spent time reading anatomy books beside the hospital’s flower bed 142 143 144.
When Sun Yan called to arrange his departure, Liang Chen recognized her fear of him and suspected that his value to her lay in his status as Liang Shi’s son. Nevertheless, he smiled and played the part of a child delighted to be going home 143.
Hospital Fire and the Liang Estate
A deliberately set fire engulfed the hospital before the planned pickup. Liang Chen watched a burning patient with fascination and considered allowing the flames to consume him too. The nurse pulled him to safety, but recoiled when he sincerely described the victims’ suffering as an exquisite experience 143 144.
Butler Qian collected him that night while pretending to have been sent by Sun Yan. Liang Chen correctly identified both the deception and Qian’s involvement in the fire. At the Liang estate, the mistress admitted arranging the blaze and specifically ordering Qian to spare his room 144 145.
The mistress abused Liang Chen and insisted that only her own son could inherit. He subsequently deduced that she and Liang Shi had no children. Qian confirmed that Liang Shi was gravely ill and that whoever controlled Liang Chen’s custody would effectively control the family 145 146.
Rescue by Moon Shadow
Moon Shadow entered Liang Chen’s bedroom disguised as a maid while investigating him for Sun Yan. Her explanation of private investigation immediately interested him—not because of wealth or prestige, but because the profession frequently involved mortal danger 146 147.
When armed attackers entered the estate, Moon Shadow hid him beneath the bed, explained firearms to him, and helped him escape through a window using an impact-absorbing device. She took him in afterward, leaving Sun Yan’s commission incomplete. Newspapers reported the family’s destruction and the arrest of a maid accused of assisting the attackers 147.
Appearance
- Build and face: Handsome and muscular; described as burly, with powerful biceps 50 133 139.
- Eyes: Slightly rounded, usually bright and moist, with light-brown irises resembling colored glass. Yin Chao compares them to a small animal’s eyes 26 145.
- Childhood appearance: Fluffy hair, a plump face, and large, watery eyes 143 145.
- Palace-maid disguise: Wears a lotus-pink skirt, two small braids at his temples, and carries a handkerchief during Peach Blossom on a Human Face 133 134.
Personality
Liang Chen’s cheerful, polite manner conceals an intense fascination with death, bodily injury, and violence. He praises the precision of a fatal gunshot wound, studies anatomy, and imagines how a human body would look under crushing pressure. He regards burning bodies as art rather than reacting with ordinary horror 19 143 144.
His fascination extends to his own potential death. As a child, he welcomes the prospect of dying in the hospital fire; later, he shows no visible fear when burned during judgment. His interest in becoming a private investigator likewise centers on the excitement of life-threatening danger 32 144 147.
Family rejection and insults rarely upset him. He treats revelations about his birth as interesting information and even welcomes Butler Qian’s attempt to shame him as a novel experience. His unconventional compliments can sound like deliberate mockery, although he genuinely considers the mistress’s malicious eyes beautiful 143 144 145 146.
Around friends, he is talkative, theatrical, and prone to teasing. He dramatically complains when Yin Chao pretends not to recognize him and exaggerates his palace-maid mannerisms. His reckless curiosity also prompts him to consider eating poisonous roots, but An Nian’s tearful warning makes him apologize and promise to stop eating random things 50 134 142.
