Background / History

Childhood and Experiment Subject No. 002

Midnight grew up among unwanted children at an orphanage. Its director named him Midnight because he had been born at midnight. As a child, he met the silent No. 001—later known as Yin Chao—and affectionately thought of him as “Glutinous Rice Ball.” No. 001 accepted his offered hand, reassuring Midnight that the other child did not dislike him 102 106.

A common cold went untreated and developed into a fatal illness. Midnight died while holding No. 001’s hand. After an assistant explained death, No. 001 declared that Midnight could not die because he liked listening to him talk. The following morning, Midnight was alive again 103.

Midnight later became Experiment Subject No. 002. When they reunited in the experiment instance, he explained that he had initially mistaken Yin Chao for a clone: the professor had wanted to duplicate No. 001, and Yin Chao still appeared to be a child while Midnight had grown into an adult 104 106.

Removal from the Instance World

When Yin Rui adopted No. 001 and took him away, Midnight blocked her path and stared at the child in her arms. Shang Yi prepared to kill him, but Yin Rui intervened, suggesting that he might be their son’s friend. Yin Rui and Shang Yi subsequently erased Midnight’s memories and brought him out of that Instance World 109 110.

During the bride instance, Midnight introduced himself as the Tenth Player and attempted to kill Yin Chao without recognizing their childhood bond. These encounters returned to him as memories during the later experiment instance 107.

Midnight is tall and long-legged, with finely sculpted features and an upright bearing 14 30.

Personality

Midnight is introduced as a loner who dislikes conversation. His early exchanges with Yin Chao are threatening and guarded, but he also recognizes the danger of indiscriminate killing inside an instance. He readily intervenes against immediate violence, kicking Zhang Di away when the boy attacks a girl in the classroom 13 14 16.

Around Yin Chao, his reserve gives way to embarrassment, tenderness, and jealousy. Yin Chao’s teasing can leave him visibly flustered, while his concern extends to avoiding hurtful language when discussing the Miracle Guild’s investigation into Yin Chao’s family. He firmly rejects the suggestion that seeing nonhuman beings makes Yin Chao “crazy” 52 137.

His devotion is openly self-sacrificing. He offers to die so Yin Chao can complete the experiment instance, and later promises to remain on Yin Chao’s side even if sparing No. 028 proves to be a mistake. He wants their wedding to receive everyone’s blessings rather than resemble an escape 107 189.
