Background / History

Enslavement and the Farm Encounter

The Murlocs near Southshore were enslaved by Naga. One escaped and wandered onto Rhode’s farm in search of food, where it fought a Guardian Ward. Rhode and Lilia found the exhausted creature beside the nearly destroyed ward. Rhode discovered that he could speak its language, heard its account of enslavement, and released it at Lilia’s urging 6 7 27.

Bumpelba and the Naga Attack

Nat Pagle later hooked a Murloc while fishing at sea, and Rhode helped pull it aboard with Mage Hand. It recognized Rhode, leading him to believe it was the creature he had released. Having found no food on land, it had returned to the sea. It accepted Rhode’s offer of food and companionship, received the name Bumpelba, and became Lilia’s pet 25 26.

During the voyage toward Southern Island, Bumpelba identified the attacking Naga as his people’s enslavers. Rhode froze the surrounding sea, trapping the attackers; Bumpelba celebrated that the Murlocs were free and that he could return home 27 28.

Unification of the Southshore Tribe

When Rhode, Lilia, and Bumpelba reached the settlement, hundreds of Murlocs were fighting in two factions. A dark-skinned leader supported the Naga, while a white leader rejected their authority. Both sides submitted after Rhode displayed numerous Mage Hands and proclaimed himself the Sea God 29.

Rhode appointed Bumpelba chief because he had stayed out of the conflict and could be accepted by both factions. He then brought the tribe to Southshore’s docks and announced that they would help expand the docks into a harbor 30.

Harbor Construction

While awaiting approval for the harbor project, the Murlocs helped clear rubble from the Jade Mine. Mayor Marebu subsequently approved the expansion and took responsibility for overseeing it when Rhode left for Durnholde Keep 31 32.

Bumpelba’s tribe became the project’s main labor force. Rhode taught key construction personnel basic Murloc phrases to coordinate their work, while Southshore’s fishermen, led by Nat Pagle, supplied fresh fish as payment. The Murlocs joined the townspeople in seeing Rhode and Lilia off 32.

Appearance

  • Build: Small, fish-like bodies with two short, sturdy arms and two short, sturdy legs 6 7.
  • Head: Large fish heads with bulging eyes and enormous mouths 6 26.
  • Eyes and teeth: The first encountered Murloc has cloudy yellow eyes with vertical pupils, sharp hooked teeth, and thick saliva dripping from its mouth 6.
  • Fins: A row of dorsal fins runs down the first specimen’s back 6.
  • Coloration: Documented individuals include blue-skinned Murlocs and the dark-skinned and white leaders of the opposing village factions 6 29 30.

Behavior & Society

Group Behavior

  • Murlocs are notorious for fighting in packs rather than alone. Rhode recalls their tendency to flee when hurt and return with reinforcements 7.
  • The village brawl follows the same pattern: outnumbered Murlocs retreat, gather companions, and resume the chase once they have the advantage 29.
  • They seldom attack merchant ships, but are hostile toward vessels entering their territory. Their activity is concentrated in coastal waters 26.
  • Fish are their preferred food. Hunger drives Bumpelba’s movements between land and sea and his decision to accompany Rhode 7 26.

Language and Naming

  • Murlocs speak a language represented by cries such as “walla walla” and “wurloo-walla.” Rhode can understand and speak it through his unusual linguistic ability 7 32.
  • Bumpelba initially has no name and explains that only the chief has one; Rhode names him before he becomes chief 26.
  • Rhode’s construction vocabulary lessons include directions, carrying instructions, hammering instructions, and expressions of thanks. These lessons spark a Murloc-language craze in Southshore 32.

Sea God Belief

  • The Southshore Murlocs associate the Sea God with possessing many hands. The Naga’s multiple arms persuade one faction that they are the god’s emissaries; the opposing faction argues that they have too few hands to rule 29.
  • Eight conjured Mage Hands cause both factions to recognize Rhode as an emissary. He then produces more than a hundred and declares himself the Sea God, a claim the tribe accepts 29 30.
  • The Sea God’s actual identity is not established. Rhode’s thoughts about possible identities remain speculation 29.
  • Their belief motivates enthusiastic work on Rhode’s harbor project 32.

Abilities & Skills

Swimming and Mobility

  • Murlocs can swim and run quickly despite their short legs 7 29.
  • Their ability to work underwater makes them valuable for tasks humans find difficult during harbor construction 30.

Combat

  • Their chief advantage is numbers: a lone Murloc poses much less danger than an assembled group 7 30.
  • The farm intruder nearly destroys Rhode’s Guardian Ward, but is left exhausted by the fight 6 7.
  • Naga are substantially stronger and enslave Murlocs to perform labor 27.

Labor and Resource Gathering

  • The Southshore tribe performs rubble-clearing work at the Jade Mine and supplies the main workforce for the harbor project 31 32.
  • Fine construction tasks, including laying foundations and marking lines, require human workers 30.
  • Rhode proposes using their access to the seabed to supply pearls, coral, and seafood as Southshore specialties 30.

Relationships

  • Rhode — Unifies the Southshore tribe, appoints its chief, and organizes its work; the Murlocs revere him as the Sea God 29 30 32.
  • Bumpelba — Neutral member elevated to chief after the factional conflict; supervises the tribe’s harbor labor 30 32.
  • Lilia — Finds Murlocs adorable, advocates kindness toward the first farm intruder, and regards the tribe as an extension of her pet family 7 30.
  • Naga — Former enslavers whose authority divides the village before Rhode intervenes 27 29.
  • Nat Pagle — Leads the fishermen supplying fish as compensation for the tribe’s construction work 32.
  • Mayor Marebu — Oversees the harbor project employing the tribe after Rhode’s departure 32.

Trivia

  • Rhode initially treats the idea of coastal Murlocs helping humans build houses as an absurd comparison; they later become central to Southshore’s harbor construction 1 32.
  • Bumpelba sleeps upright with his huge eyes apparently open, startling Rhode during their overnight stay at the farm 29.
  • The author’s note identifies Concise Murloc Language Tutorial as a reference, but states that most of the chapter’s Murloc dialogue was invented 29.
