Power Progression
The documented milestones concern Rhode’s mastery and expanded applications; no numbered level is assigned specifically to Mage Hand.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial casting and spell-model analysis | 10 | Quickly maps the textbook’s different applications and summons a tiny hand. Practice produces fewer failures and less discomfort than Fireball training. |
| Basic mastery and large-scale lifting | 11 | After two days of practice, can summon a hand about three meters wide to lift heavy rocks. Its mana cost forces him to interrupt mine-clearing work. |
| Combat adaptation | 12 | Develops uses absent from the textbook’s examples: blocking charges, sweeping attackers away, punching, and catching a falling person. |
| More efficient control | 22 | Clears the mine entrance much faster than before and assists with carrying a heavy sack of spider legs. |
| Ship-scale propulsion | 28 | Uses two enormous hands to gently push a merchant ship off frozen water. |
| Mass simultaneous summoning | 29 | Summons eight hands, then more than a hundred smaller hands by dividing his mana evenly among them. |
| Fine tool manipulation | 31 | Uses small hands to control kitchen tools, prepare apples, mix ingredients, and move a baking tray. |
| Destructive force and reshaping | 36 | Smashes a wooden dummy with a fist, transforms the hand into a spear, and crushes a stone dummy in its grip. |
Background / History
Rhode initially learns Mage Hand to repair damage caused by his Fireball. Mayor Marebu suggests using it to clear the collapsed Jade Mine entrance, reducing Rhode’s liability from compensation for the entire mine to the miners’ lost work. The prospect of avoiding a ruinous bill motivates him to set Fireball practice aside and study Lilia’s textbook 10.
Later, Rhode teaches Mage Hand at Audric’s Magic Tower. Alex improves considerably under his guidance, while the less advanced apprentices initially struggle with Rhode’s spell models. Through detailed explanations of individual circuits and nodes, practice advice, and instruction tailored to each student, Rhode eventually enables the apprentices to use the spell at the construction site 37 50.
Appearance
- Early manifestations are milky-white or white; later examples include translucent blue hands and white palms glowing blue 10 12 29 36.
- The ordinary spell is approximately the size of a human palm, while Rhode’s enlarged versions reach two or three meters across 48.
- The hand can open into a palm, clench into a fist, or contract into a spear 12 36.
- Rhode arranges more than a hundred hands into a pair of wings shimmering with azure arcane radiance 29.
Abilities & Skills
Object Manipulation
Mage Hand projects amplified physical strength through a controllable magical hand 10.
- Standard applications: Picking up and throwing objects, catching thrown objects, and squeezing soft materials into different shapes 10.
- Heavy labor: Lifts rubble and helps carry heavy loads. Rhode also proposes using it to hammer stakes and transport construction materials 11 22 45.
- Fishing assistance: Grips Nat Pagle’s fishing rod and helps haul a hooked Murloc onto the ship 25 26.
- Precision handling: Controls knives, dishes, mixing tools, and baking trays during food preparation 31.
- Apprentice use: Sally carefully transports a bucket of water to a worker, then dismisses the hand 50.
Combat and Protection
Although treated as a utility spell with limited lethality, Mage Hand becomes a powerful weapon through Rhode’s adaptations 12 36.
- Blocking and displacement: Stops Hackett’s charge and sweeps another attacker several meters away 12.
- Striking and crushing: Delivers punches, flattens a wooden dummy, and breaks a stone dummy into rubble 12 36.
- Piercing: Its spear-shaped form pierces a wooden dummy and pulverizes its upper half 36.
- Restraint: Helps Rhode pin the mortally wounded Yetius while Lilia delivers the killing blow 18.
- Protective positioning: Pulls Lilia out of an ambush and deploys several small hands around the pair as guards 16.
- Intimidation: Rhode places one giant hand between himself and Hearthglen and two overhead, prompting Hearthglen to abandon his threatened attack 43.
Rescue and Transport
- Controlled catching: Catches Lilia after Bondes is punched away and lowers her gently to the ground 12.
- Emergency transport: Carries the critically wounded Julie through the air as Rhode runs to Durnholde Monastery, then lays her on the treatment table 46.
- Propulsion: Two enormous hands push Captain Sander’s ship off the ice without the violent motion of the preceding storm 28.
Scaling and Multiple Hands
- Size, grip strength, grabbing distance, and mana consumption depend on the spell model’s circuits and nodes 10.
- Rhode enlarges spells by combining models; stable models can be linked through key nodes 48.
- Multiple hands can operate simultaneously. Dividing mana among more manifestations allows Rhode to prioritize quantity over individual size 29.
Limitations
- Continuous control: Unlike constructs that follow instructions independently, Mage Hand requires ongoing direction from its caster 44.
- Mana expenditure: Large hands consume substantial mana. Mine-clearing exhausts Rhode’s available reserves, and near depletion prevents him from summoning a larger hand against Yetius 11 18.
- Breakable defenses: Yetius scatters every small hand Rhode places in front of Lilia with a single claw strike 17.
- Unresolved miniaturization: By Chapter 48, Rhode can enlarge a palm-sized hand to several meters but does not know how to shrink one to finger size 48.
- Casting failure: Practice can still fail, though Rhode experiences much less pain from failed Mage Hand attempts than from failed Fireball attempts 10.
Story Role
- Southshore recognition: Rhode’s fight with the drunken miners demonstrates both offensive force and delicate rescue work, leading townspeople to praise his magical ability 12.
- Murloc allegiance: Eight conjured hands convince the village’s rival factions that Rhode is the Sea God’s emissary. His subsequent display of more than a hundred hands supports his declaration that he is the Sea God himself 29.
- Tower authority: Destroying wooden and stone dummies overturns the apprentices’ dismissal of Mage Hand as a flashy support spell and establishes Rhode’s practical combat credentials 36.
- Cooperative construction: Apprentices working alongside formerly homeless laborers gain opportunities to interact, gradually overcoming their discomfort with treating commoners as equals 50.
