Background / History

Journey to the Eastern Kingdoms

Kienlo traveled from Kalimdor through several countries, experiencing different local customs along the way. Her desire to become a Balance Druid brought her to the Eastern Kingdoms, where she searched for a feather needed for Moonkin training 184 227.

Rhode and Lilia met her in a cave while she was in feline form. She had sneaked inside looking for a feather from a Moonlight Moonkin, but found none. Rhode offered to take her home and help with the search, and both she and Lilia enthusiastically accepted 135.

Her arrival in Southshore frightened residents who mistook her for a dangerous leopard. Transforming into a night elf calmed the confrontation. Her distinctive blue braid also prompted Rhode to recognize her as a druid NPC he remembered from the Arathi Highlands—though the capable, freely shapeshifting druid in his memory differed sharply from the inexperienced girl before him 136.

Joining Rhode’s Household

Kienlo settled into Rhode’s two-story home, staying upstairs with Sally while Rhode and Lilia occupied the downstairs rooms. She became an affectionate older-sister figure to Lilia 136 153.

Rhode took her and Lilia toward the Hinterlands to continue the feather search. Along the way, Kienlo helped eliminate a Syndicate patrol and rescue the Fang of the Uncrowned. She later joined the fighting against Oto, attacking his left flank while Sally protected her with Power Word: Shield 142 143 144 164.

She could not accompany Rhode and Lilia on the mission to protect Arthas and Calia because it was an internal Assassins Alliance operation 168.

Herbal Research and Cultivation

Kienlo’s knowledge of magical herbs became important after she identified the material used in a rune trap. Her explanation that herbs retained magical energy helped Rhode consider new uses for them 209.

She accompanied Rhode and Mayor Marebu on farmland inspections, diagnosed nutrient-starved peanut crops, and identified corpse-enriched soil in a healthy patch. That discovery supported the establishment of an herb research base. She subsequently worked with Marebu and Puzik’s goblins on fertilization, herb trials, and a soil-analysis laboratory 210 211.

Rhode entrusted her with distributing Dreamfoil seeds among local farming households and keeping Felweed seeds secret. Dreamfoil cultivation failed, but Ghost Mushrooms and Grave Moss flourished under her care, supplying ingredients for low-grade Necromantic Potions. Plague Flowers remained impossible to grow because she could not identify a necessary component of their native soil 220 226.

When Rhode sought to gather Plague Flowers from contaminated Alterac Keep, Kienlo could not cleanse the area: she had never learned Plague Cleansing and knew no other druids who could help. The group instead sought assistance from the Frostwolf shamans 227 230.

Moonlight Feather and Balance Training

During the fighting against the Witherbark trolls, Kienlo fought at the front in feline form. Afterward, she discovered the long-sought Moonlight Feather on an altar. She explained that only the strongest Hinterlands Moonkin possessed feathers carrying the magical energy needed for Balance training 235 237.

At the ensuing Wildhammer banquet, she detected poison in Rhode’s drink, stopping him from drinking it. Her warning led Rhode to expose Lord Flagar as the disguised dreadlord Balnazzar 237.

Learning the new form was slow. Two months later, she was still studying and could not yet become a Moonkin. By the Northrend campaign, however, she had mastered Moonkin Form and Starfire 242 325.

Northrend Campaign

Kienlo accompanied Rhode’s reconnaissance party toward En’Kilah. She received warnings from the vegetation in a corrupted forest and attempted to communicate with its animals, but found them consumed by hatred and distress. Despite her unease, she continued with the party and later removed a curse from an ally during the fighting at a Cult of the Damned base 310 311.

Against Ingvar, she transformed into a giant bear just in time to intercept an axe blow aimed at Uther. Although repeatedly wounded, she maintained the enemy’s attention and created an opening for the other fighters, culminating in Lilia’s attack from above 328 330.

Appearance

Kienlo’s humanoid form is a tall, slender night elf with a youthful face and softly glowing eyes 136.

  • Hair: Blue, woven into a thick braid resting against her chest; she says braiding it becomes quick with practice 136 153.
  • Facial features: Long blue eyebrows and a curved golden marking on each cheek 136.
  • Ears: Long and noticeably longer than Lilia’s 136.
  • Feline form: Bright, pale-glowing eyes, fur, retractable claws, and a visibly catlike manner 135 144.
  • Usual early clothing: Close-fitting leather armor exposing a ring of skin around her navel 136.

Personality

Kienlo is affectionate but expects others to respect her boundaries. She initially protests when Lilia pets her without warning, then readily permits it once asked. In feline form, she relaxes, stretches, and purrs contentedly under Lilia’s attention 135 143.

She is less eager for combat than Lilia and becomes nervous when investigating a suspicious cave. Nevertheless, she attacks decisively when threatened and later endures severe wounds to protect Uther 143 161 328.

Her ambition to become a Moonkin begins with a practical complaint: walking on all fours is tiring, and she wants to stand upright and cast spells. She initially rejects bear form as ugly and uncomfortable, but eventually uses it in battle 135 328.

Her connection to nature makes corruption especially distressing. The forest near En’Kilah feels twisted and painful to her, and the inability to communicate with its animals leaves her dispirited. She also worships Elune, whom she describes as guiding the night elves 223 310.

Abilities & Skills

Feline Shapeshifting and Stealth

Kienlo’s first known transformation is called Cheetah Form, although her feline appearance is also described as a leopard and, later, a panther 135 143 325.

  • Uses Stealth to approach enemies unseen; initially, it lasts only briefly 135 143.
  • Kills a Syndicate patrolman with a bite to the throat before he can raise an alarm 143.
  • Fights Witherbark trolls with close-range biting attacks 235.
  • Early transformations leave her unable to return to humanoid form for several days. This limitation still affects her during the coastal outing and Arthas’s travels with the group 136 184 223.
  • Initially knows fighting techniques only for cat form and is reluctant to transform even when asked to fight a tiger 142.

Moonkin Form and Starfire

Moonkin Form fulfills her goal of becoming a spellcasting Balance Druid 135 325.

  • Requires a magically charged Moonlight Feather as a training aid 237.
  • Takes extended study rather than becoming available immediately after obtaining the feather 237 242.
  • Allows her to cast Starfire from range 325.
  • Does not prevent her from choosing feline melee combat to support Lilia 325.

Bear Form and Survival Skills

Kienlo uses a giant bear transformation to hold Ingvar’s attention and shield her allies 328 330.

  • Intercepts an axe strike intended for Uther 328.
  • Activates Barkskin, Ironfur, Frenzied Regeneration, and Survival Instincts while enduring repeated attacks 328.
  • Remains vulnerable to injury; her bear form becomes covered in wounds 328.
  • Creates openings for the rest of the group rather than defeating Ingvar alone 328 330.

Herbalism and Soil Analysis

Kienlo understands magical herbs, crop nutrition, and the relationship between soil composition and herb growth 209 210 226.

  • Identifies magical herbs as materials that retain magical power, including varieties used for mage runes and evil magic 209.
  • Distinguishes insufficient nutrients from inadequate watering when examining failing crops 210.
  • Recognizes corpse-enriched soil and compares cultivation sites with the Arathi Tomb Chamber 210 226.
  • Oversees successful Ghost Mushroom and Grave Moss cultivation for potion production 226.
  • Cannot independently identify every growth requirement; some soil differences require specialist laboratory analysis, and Plague Flowers remain unresolved 218 226.

Nature Sensing and Poison Detection

Kienlo can receive information from plants and attempt communication with animals 310.

  • Reads warnings conveyed by grass and shrubs about evil creatures in a forest 310.
  • Finds communication impossible when corrupted animals convey only wailing and hatred of life 310.
  • Recognizes nature-derived power in Thrall after his shamanic awakening 228.
  • Detects poison in Rhode’s drink using her druidic sensitivity and feline sense of smell 237.

Curse Removal and Other Limits

  • Curse removal: Frees an allied fighter from a curse during the Northrend campaign 311.
  • Plague Cleansing: Has not learned the ability when asked to cleanse Alterac Keep 227 230.
  • Swimming: Cannot swim at the time of the ship-salvage episode; hopes learning seal form will change that 232.
