Background / History
Yetius occupied a cave on Darrow Hill and attacked anyone passing through, seizing whatever interested him. His wanted poster advised adventurers to form a sufficiently large party before attempting to kill him. He had defeated countless adventurers, and the bounty remained unclaimed long enough for its poster to become worn and faded 14 36.
Lieutenant Orinel directed Rhode and Lilia to the bounty, which they formally accepted. On reaching the cave, they discovered that Yetius was not alone: ten smaller yetis served under him. Yetius ordered them to attack while remaining behind them, chewing a bone. Rhode immobilized the underlings with Frost Nova and brought Lilia forward to confront their leader 14 15 16.
Yetius initially attacked Lilia, but Rhode interrupted him with rapid fireballs. Lilia then struck the back of his head with a charged fireball, drawing his attention and giving Rhode time to blast a deep wound into his lower back. Yetius survived, circled Rhode, and eventually retreated as his injury worsened. Rhode pursued him outside and brought him down with a larger, long-range fireball 17.
Still alive, Yetius struggled as Rhode pinned him with Mage Hand and his own body weight. Lilia drove her shortsword through his eye into his brain, killing him. Rhode removed one horn for the bounty, and the pair recovered a box of Ruby Earrings from a concealed pouch beneath Yetius’s belly fur. His ten underlings survived the encounter 18.
Appearance
Yetius resembles an enormous, upright gorilla with a vaguely human face and prominent horns 14 16.
- Size: Probably over four meters tall, making him visibly larger than his underlings 16.
- Coloration: Reddish skin beneath thick fur 16 18.
- Horns: Two horns, thicker and more curved than those of the other yetis; their distinctive size makes them recognizable bounty evidence 15 16 21.
- Fangs: Sharp teeth as long as an adult’s fingers 17.
- Concealed pouch: A pocket-like space on the front of his belly, hidden by fur and capable of holding objects 18.
Personality
Yetius behaves arrogantly while protected by his pack, continuing to gnaw on a bone as his underlings charge the intruders. He initially treats Lilia as the easier target, but changes priorities when Rhode prevents him from reaching her 16 17.
His aggression gives way to self-preservation once he is seriously wounded. Rather than fight to the death, he attempts to escape; the narration connects this decision to his need to remain capable of hunting and strong enough to control his underlings 17.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Natural Weapons
- A single claw strike scatters all the small Mage Hands Rhode places in front of Lilia 17.
- Uses lunging claw attacks and attempts to bite Lilia’s neck 17.
- Even near death, claws out two pits in the earth while struggling against Rhode’s restraint 18.
Durability
- Blocks Rhode’s weak, instant-cast fireballs with his claws, sustaining little damage 17.
- Survives a charged fireball that blasts a deep wound into his lower back and returns to his feet 17.
- Remains alive after the larger fireball that brings him down outside the cave 17 18.
- His face and eyes remain vulnerable: burning facial fur obstructs his vision, and a sword thrust through the eye delivers the fatal injury 17 18.
Pack Leadership and Combat Tactics
- Commands ten yetis through roars, sending them into battle before engaging personally 16.
- Shields his face against repeated fireballs and changes targets in response to interference or injury 17.
- Circles Rhode in search of an opening before choosing to retreat 17.
- Fails to notice Lilia moving behind him while occupied with Rhode’s barrage 17.
Items
- Bone: Chews it while overseeing his underlings’ attack, then discards it when Rhode and Lilia reach him 16.
- Decorated box and Ruby Earrings: Carries the box in his concealed belly pouch. The earrings store mana and allow Rhode to recover enough magic to freeze the surviving yetis again 18.
- Earrings’ provenance: Audric identifies them as property that disappeared from his Magic Tower months earlier. He proposes that someone stole them and was subsequently robbed by Yetius; this explanation is not confirmed 35.
Relationships
- Ten yeti underlings — His pack follows his attack commands. After his death, Lieutenant Orinel plans new bounties to eliminate them 16 21.
- Rhode — Bounty hunter responsible for inflicting Yetius’s major wounds, pursuing him, and restraining him for the killing blow 17 18.
- Lilia — Initially singled out as the easier prey; helps distract him with magic and ultimately kills him with her shortsword 16 17 18.
- Lieutenant Orinel — Oversees the bounty and authenticates Yetius’s severed horn as proof of completion 14 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Recognition in Southshore: Yetius’s defeat earns Rhode the name “Abominable Snowman Bane,” and news of the victory spreads through town 21 22.
- Commercial opportunity: Hearing about the kill, tailor Bath’rah the Windwatcher approaches Rhode about supplying hides for Yeti Hide Cloaks 24.
- Standing at Audric’s Tower: Audric treats the victory as evidence of Rhode’s practical combat ability. Alex later announces it to the tower’s apprentices, prompting admiration and applause, although Lilia’s claims to have delivered the killing blow receive little attention 35 36.
- Unresolved Darrow Hill clue: Rhode later discovers that Alex hunted lesser yetis on Darrow Hill the previous month. The record suggests a connection among other clues, but Rhode has not yet identified it 49.
