Background / History
Tang San has lived two lives and secretly learned the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record. Despite that accumulated experience, he initially does not understand his attraction to Xiao Wu; the narration describes his two lives as totaling roughly thirty years when they meet 7 18.
His father, Tang Hao, works as a blacksmith. Before martial soul awakening, Tang San and Ye Fan are only passing acquaintances who occasionally encounter one another in the mountains 1.
Martial Soul Awakening and Apprenticeship
Ye Fan begins transmitting fabricated inner thoughts into Tang San’s mind, posing as someone reliving a previous lifetime. When those thoughts correctly predict Tang San’s twin martial souls and innate full soul power, Tang San becomes convinced that Ye Fan truly knows the future 1 2.
At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang deduces that Tang San has twin martial souls from his awakening certificate. Impressed, Tang San immediately kneels and accepts him as his teacher. Ye Fan then supplies hostile “inner” commentary about Yu Xiaogang’s character and supposed future conduct, making Tang San regret the decision almost at once 3 4.
Dorm Seven
Tang San defeats Wang Sheng and the other dormitory residents, unaware that Ye Fan has compelled them to attack through Word Spirit. He conceals Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track during the group fight, wins only after several minutes, and loses both his clothes and provisions in the struggle 5.
Xiao Wu subsequently defeats him while he is trying to keep his torn clothing in place. His growing attraction to her is intensified—and repeatedly frustrated—by Ye Fan’s manufactured claims that she will ultimately choose Ye Fan instead 6 7.
First Soul Ring Hunt
Tang San accompanies Yu Xiaogang into the Soul Hunting Forest. Although he resents his teacher, he treats Yu Xiaogang’s injuries, carries him when he cannot move quickly, and later carries the injured Luo Sanpao as well 17 18 19 23.
Ye Fan persuades him to avoid the Mandala Snake that would have supplied his first ring in the original storyline. Tang San instead requests a plant-type beast and accepts a Demon Vine Tree, encouraged by both Yu Xiaogang’s recommendation and Ye Fan’s invented praise of its potential 20 21 23 24.
After completing his own absorption, Tang San helps Yu Xiaogang attempt to interrupt Ye Fan’s thousand-year ring absorption. He recognizes that Ye Fan appears stable, but resents the possibility that Ye Fan has withheld a method for exceeding ring-age limits. Tang San restrains Xiao Wu while Yu Xiaogang approaches Ye Fan 26.
Xiao Wu breaks free and blocks the attack. When Yu Xiaogang then threatens her, Tang San intervenes with his first soul skill. Afterward, he presents their actions as concern for Ye Fan and apologizes to Xiao Wu on his teacher’s behalf 27 28.
Six Years Later and the Journey to Shrek
Following the forest incident, Xiao Wu largely ignores Tang San. He repeatedly tries to apologize, becomes increasingly dependent on Ye Fan’s mediation, and is especially lonely after discovering that Tang Hao has disappeared. By the time they reach Suotuo City, he runs errands for both Ye Fan and Xiao Wu and addresses Ye Fan as “Brother Fan” 32.
In Suotuo, Tang San confronts Dai Mubai and defeats him despite a nine-level disadvantage. His draining martial soul lets him outlast Dai Mubai’s enhanced strength, while a combination of binding and an upward bamboo thrust breaks through his defenses 35 36.
Tang San later reaches Shrek Academy’s registration area with the group. By then, he has become resigned to the widening cultivation gap between himself and Ye Fan, reasoning that future opportunities will eventually appear if he continues following him 41.
Appearance
Tang San initially appears as a small, black-haired child who looks malnourished; after the six-year time skip, he is described as ordinary-looking 1 32.
- Hair: Black in his childhood appearance 1.
- Eyes: Become purple-tinged when he uses Purple Demon Eye 17 35.
- Overall impression: His ordinary appearance contrasts with the handsome men and beautiful women accompanying him to Shrek 41.
Personality
Tang San is secretive and calculating. He hides the Clear Sky Hammer at awakening and initially avoids showing his specialized footwork in front of Ye Fan. After seeing Ye Fan immobilize someone with speech, he considers preparing a poison that could render Ye Fan mute as a precaution 2 3 5.
He is quick to contemplate lethal retaliation. He prepares a Sleeve Arrow after an academy guard humiliates him and readies iron needles to kill concealed observers if they prove hostile. His sense of loyalty is conditional: once persuaded that Yu Xiaogang is morally unworthy, he decides that the obligations of a disciple need not apply to him 3 4 17.
His attraction to Xiao Wu makes him jealous, eager to please, and unusually dependent on approval. He tries to prevent her from spending time alone with Ye Fan, spends heavily on her, and accepts an increasingly subordinate role because it allows him to remain near her 12 32 37.
Despite his resentment toward Yu Xiaogang, the duty to respect his teacher still restrains him from openly defending Xiao Wu against some of the Grandmaster’s remarks. That restraint breaks when Yu Xiaogang directly threatens her 18 27.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
- Blue Silver Grass: His publicly revealed martial soul and primary combat tool 2 35.
- Clear Sky Hammer: His concealed second martial soul; Yu Xiaogang later learns its identity 2 13.
- No actual combat use or soul-ring development of the Clear Sky Hammer is shown in the supplied passages.
Mutated Blue Silver Grass
The Demon Vine Tree and Bloodthirsty Bamboo rings transform his grass into a tough, dark-attribute draining martial soul 26 29 36.
- Becomes thick, rough, and purple after the first ring; later appears dark purple and gives off black smoke 26 34 35.
- Can drain soul power and life force; nearby plants wither when its roots appear 28 29.
- Gains blood-draining properties through the second ring 36.
- Returns stolen soul power to Tang San, sustaining prolonged battles 36.
- Lacks the Mandala Snake venom associated with the original version of his first ring 29.
Ye Fan intends these changes to prevent Tang San from awakening his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline. That outcome remains unconfirmed in the supplied chapters 21 29 36.
First Soul Skill: Blue Silver Entanglement
- Produces thick, tough strands or roots that emerge from the ground and bind targets 27 28 35.
- Holds Dai Mubai despite his initial attempt to break free through strength alone 35.
- Continuously drains an opponent’s soul power, making it effective for attrition 36.
- Can be broken by sufficient enhanced force, as demonstrated by Dai Mubai’s White Tiger Vajra Transformation 36.
Second Soul Skill: Blue Silver Thrust
- Produces a dark-purple bamboo shoot with a reddish tip that thrusts upward from the ground 36.
- Works beneath the cover of Entanglement to attack an opponent from behind 36.
- Can lift a restrained target off the ground, denying them footing and leverage 36.
- Used in the humiliating Blue Silver Thousand-Year Kill tactic, learned from Ye Fan. Against Dai Mubai, the opposing forces of binding and upward thrust shatter his protective barrier 36.
Purple Demon Eye
- Detects anomalies and concealed observers in the forest 17.
- Provides exceptionally clear vision, including details Tang San would rather not see while treating Yu Xiaogang 18.
- Does not detect the unidentified observer outside the clinic, leaving Tang San uncertain whether the watcher is hidden or overwhelmingly powerful 30.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
- Enables rapid evasive movement and sudden changes of position 35.
- Lets Tang San avoid the strengthened Dai Mubai while repeatedly renewing Entanglement 36.
- Tang San can also use nimble ordinary footwork when concealing the technique 5 6.
Mysterious Heaven Skill and Hidden Weapons
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: Advances alongside his soul power after the first ring absorption 26.
- Hidden-weapon handling: Readies iron needles against possible attackers and uses a wrist-mounted Sleeve Arrow 3 17.
- Aim: His Sleeve Arrow is accurate enough at roughly a dozen meters to assist in burning the Demon Vine Tree 24.
- Close combat: Uses evasions, catches, shoulder throws, palm strikes, and punches alongside his soul skills 5 35.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
