Background / History
Tang San grew up in the Tang Sect, where he developed the habit of avoiding unfamiliar mechanisms until he understood their dangers. He possesses the sect’s hidden-weapon techniques, Purple Demon Eye, and Mysterious Heaven Skill 2 3 4.
His parents are Tang Hao and Ah Yin. According to Qin Chuan’s account, Ah Yin sacrificed herself to protect Tang San when powerful enemies intercepted the family during their journey toward the Clear Sky Sect. Her Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone was subsequently hidden in the mountains behind Holy Soul Village 37 38.
Qin Chuan further alleges that Tang Hao deliberately delayed seeking the Clear Sky Sect’s protection, ignored surveillance, and only set out after Ah Yin became pregnant and physically vulnerable. Tang Hao’s later confession under the Honesty Lock confirms that he recognized the approaching danger but withheld the protection of the sect because he coveted the soul ring and soul bone her willing sacrifice could provide. Tang San is not present for that confession, and Tang Hao subsequently conceals the details of the confrontation from him 38 41 42.
Before the tournament revelations, Tang San was Xiao Wu’s closest confidant and knew her identity as a hundred-thousand-year soft bone rabbit. His apparently protective behavior included discouraging her from leaving, questioning her conversations with other boys, and watching for her return when she slipped away from the academy 5.
Appearance
Tang San first appears as a gray-robed youth standing in the arena with the Clear Sky Hammer 1.
- Violet pupils: Purple light swirls in his eyes when he activates Purple Demon Eye 3.
- Tournament injuries: Xiao Wu’s attack leaves him vomiting blood; he later struggles to stand with his face covered in blood 8 11.
- Recovery: After the tournament, he is bedridden, listless, and physically weak enough to struggle during the climb behind Holy Soul Village 38 39.
Personality
Tang San initially treats Qin Chuan with contempt, mocking Spirit Hall for sending an auxiliary Soul Master to challenge him. Once Qin Chuan reveals an unfamiliar skill, however, Tang San immediately studies its behavior and attacks before its effect can resolve 1 2.
His confidence in his analytical abilities becomes a weakness against Qin Chuan’s games. He refuses to choose between Truth and Dare because he believes nonparticipation might avoid the mechanism, despite an explicit warning. Later, he trusts Purple Demon Eye to secure a Rock-Paper-Scissors victory and falls for a deliberately misleading hand movement 4 7 8.
His relationship with Xiao Wu conceals a calculated desire for her sacrifice. When exposed, he first claims Qin Chuan is forcing him to lie, then tells Xiao Wu that he only obeyed his father out of fear. His later private thoughts describe losing her as losing a nearly secured Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring 5 6 8 38.
Public humiliation turns his anger into murderous fixation. He attacks Qin Chuan from behind, asks Tang Hao to kill him, and eventually insists on taking revenge personally 6 7 11 39.
Before leaving Holy Soul Village, he burns Xiao Wu’s gifts without shedding a tear, again privately lamenting the loss of her potential soul ring rather than their relationship. He resolves to abandon what he considers his former softness and indecision 42.
His subsequent condition troubles Tang Hao. Recalling their last meeting in Slaughter City, Tang Hao identifies hatred, resentment, and especially fear in his son’s eyes, and tells Yu Xiaogang that Tang San’s behavior shocked him enough to raise concerns about his self-control 47.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses both the Clear Sky Hammer and Blue Silver Grass 4.
- Clear Sky Hammer: Delivers powerful crushing attacks capable of cracking the arena floor and tearing up its tiles 7.
- Blue Silver Grass: Emerges from the ground to entangle Qin Chuan’s ankles 7.
- Domain limitation: Neither martial soul breaks Qin Chuan’s Game Domain. Hammer strikes rebound without disturbing its boundary, while Blue Silver Grass loses its power on contact with the membrane 4.
- Rule interference: Rock-Paper-Scissors freezes his hammer inches from Qin Chuan’s back and causes the surrounding grass to wilt 7.
Purple Demon Eye
An eye technique that uses mental power to examine targets and detect extremely small movements 3 7.
- Can discern movements finely enough for Tang San to count a mosquito’s wingbeats 7.
- Fails to penetrate the purple mist concealing Qin Chuan’s Clown Dwarf martial soul. Increasing its output briefly exposes the Clown Dwarf, but Tang San’s vision then goes black and his temples throb 3.
- Accurately observes Qin Chuan preparing an apparent paper gesture, but cannot prevent defeat when Qin Chuan switches to rock at the last instant 7 8.
Tang Sect Hidden-Weapon Techniques
Tang San uses small projectiles to attack Qin Chuan while Coin of Fate is still resolving 2.
- Throws three sharp fragments from the shattered Eight Spider Lances, striking Qin Chuan’s neck, ribs, and shoulder 2.
- The attack fails to stop the skill: Qin Chuan’s successful coin guess expels the fragments and restores him 2.
- Hidden-weapon techniques are among the abilities locked down by Truth or Dare 4.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
Tang San circulates Mysterious Heaven Skill in an attempt to resist Truth or Dare’s suppression 4.
- The summoned internal energy jams in his chest rather than overcoming the rules 4.
- He retains ordinary limb movement, but loses access to his Soul Skills and spiritual-power techniques until the questioning ends 4 6.
Slaughter City Tempering
Tang Hao selects Slaughter City as the next stage of Tang San’s development, intending him to accumulate killing aura and obtain the Divine Slaughter’s Domain. Tang San is subsequently brought there and left behind while Tang Hao returns to Heaven Dou City. No acquisition of the domain or new soul-power rank is confirmed in the supplied passages 39 42 47.
Power Progression
| Stage | Development / Condition | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament finals | Already possesses twin martial souls, Purple Demon Eye, Tang Sect hidden-weapon techniques, and Mysterious Heaven Skill. His exact soul-power rank is not stated in the supplied passages 2 3 4. | 2 3 4 |
| Loss of the Eight Spider Lances | Full Moon shatters his external soul bone. He uses its fragments as projectiles but can no longer summon the lances 2 6. | 2 6 |
| Truth or Dare suppression | Temporarily loses access to soul power and associated techniques; regains control after answering both compulsory questions 4 6. | 4 6 |
| Post-tournament recovery | Recovers from severe injuries under Tang Hao’s care. Tang Hao proposes a hidden gift and a route toward godhood through further tempering 38 39. | 38 39 |
| Lost soul-bone opportunity | Does not receive Ah Yin’s Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone because Qin Chuan and Bibi Dong take it first; Tang Hao fails to retrieve it 39 42. | 39 42 |
| Entry into Slaughter City | Leaves Holy Soul Village with Tang Hao and is later confirmed to have been left in Slaughter City. The intended Divine Slaughter’s Domain remains unconfirmed 42 47. | 42 47 |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Eight Spider Lances — An external soul bone shattered by Full Moon during the tournament. Tang San uses its fragments as projectiles but can no longer summon the lances afterward 2 6.
- Medicinal broth — Given to him by Tang Hao during his recovery; Tang San forces himself to drink it despite its bitterness 39.
- Xiao Wu’s keepsakes — A woven grass bracelet, a colorful stone she collected in the Star Dou Great Forest, and a drawing of the two of them holding hands. Tang San burns all three before departing Holy Soul Village 42.
- Ah Yin’s Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone — A planned inheritance rather than an acquired item. Qin Chuan and Bibi Dong remove it before Tang Hao can give it to him 38 39 42.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and protector. Arranged Xiao Wu’s confinement, intervened after Tang San’s humiliation, and later promised to guide him toward godhood. After failing to recover the hidden soul bone, he takes Tang San to Slaughter City. He subsequently seeks Yu Xiaogang’s help against Qin Chuan while expressing concern that his son may lose control 5 11 39 42 47.
- Ah Yin — Mother, who sacrificed herself to protect him. Her hidden soul bone was intended as a gift for his future development. Tang Hao’s later forced confession reveals his own role in allowing the danger that led to her sacrifice, but Tang San is not shown learning that truth 37 38 39 41 42.
- Xiao Wu — Longtime intimate companion and intended sacrifice target. After learning his plans, she strikes him with Waist Bow while he is unable to defend himself. Her subsequent work at Qin Chuan’s Game Hall intensifies his resentment. Before leaving for Slaughter City, he destroys her keepsakes and continues to regard her departure as the loss of a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring 5 6 8 38 42.
- Qin Chuan — Tournament opponent and target of revenge. Publicly exposes Tang San’s secrets, defeats him through rule-based games, and later takes the hidden resources Tang Hao intended for him. Qin Chuan eventually asks Liu Erlong to report any sighting of Tang San 4 5 6 8 39 42 77.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Recognizes the danger of Qin Chuan’s martial soul but is shocked by the motives revealed in his student’s confession. Later explicitly reaffirms his support for Tang San, arguing that humans hunting soul beasts for soul rings is natural, and shares his research on Qin Chuan’s abilities with Tang Hao. His subsequent cooperation with Qin Chuan through Shrek’s Game Hall provokes Tang Hao’s anger 6 7 47 48 66.
- Dai Mubai — Shrek teammate who continues defending him after the revelations, demanding that Qin Chuan release his “brother.” Tang San had previously known about Dai Mubai’s activities at the Rose Hotel and had fought with him over its couples’ suite when Shrek’s term began 8 9.
- Ma Hongjun — Teammate who calls him Third Brother and previously sought his advice on pursuing girls; struggles to reconcile that admiration with the confession 1 6.
- Oscar — Teammate who initially mocks Qin Chuan alongside him, but later tells Ma Hongjun to stop calling Tang San “Brother San” 1 6.
- Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing — Teammates who side with Xiao Wu after the exposure. Ning Rongrong condemns him openly, while Zhu Zhuqing places herself between him and Xiao Wu 5 6.
- Shrek Academy — Former academy and tournament affiliation. Students discard their badges after his confession, and Tang Hao later acknowledges that Shrek’s people no longer recognize him. The academy’s eventual partnership with Qin Chuan deepens Tang Hao’s sense of betrayal 6 47 66.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Soul Master Tournament Finals
Tang San initially dominates his encounter with Qin Chuan, knocking the auxiliary Soul Master to the ground with his hammer. Qin Chuan’s subsequent use of Coin of Fate reverses the situation: Tang San’s fragment attack succeeds physically but cannot prevent the game’s healing reward 1 2.
Attempts to analyze or break the Game Domain fail. Selected for Truth or Dare, Tang San lets the countdown expire rather than choosing, triggering a doubled penalty of two compulsory questions 3 4.
Exposure of the Xiao Wu Scheme
Under the Honesty Lock, Tang San reveals that Tang Hao recognized Xiao Wu’s soul-beast identity long ago and arranged for her to remain under confinement. He states that his father would dispose of her if she fled or became close to another boy 5.
The second question exposes why he brought her into the tournament: he expected the Lovesick Heartbreak Red concealing her aura to fall away, allowing powerful experts to recognize and pursue her. He planned to pretend to protect her with his life so that she would willingly sacrifice herself to him. The confession provokes widespread condemnation and breaks Xiao Wu’s trust 6.
The scandal also damages Shrek’s standing. Accompanying students remove and discard their academy badges, while former admirers openly reject Tang San. By the time Tang Hao later visits the academy, ordinary people across the continent know of the sacrifice scheme 6 47.
Defeat and Capture
After regaining his soul power, Tang San attempts to kill Qin Chuan. Qin Chuan evades the first attack and interrupts the next with Rock-Paper-Scissors. Tang San loses, becomes immobilized, and must receive an undefended attack; Qin Chuan appoints Xiao Wu to deliver it 6 7 8.
Tang Hao arrives, and Tang San immediately urges him to kill Qin Chuan. Instead, Tang Hao loses Destiny Roulette and has his soul power drained. Spirit Hall is declared the tournament winner, and Ghost Douluo carries Tang San away while Chrysanthemum Douluo takes Tang Hao into custody 11 13.
Recovery and Revenge Plans
Near Holy Soul Village, Tang San learns that Xiao Wu is working at Qin Chuan’s Game Hall. The news makes him vomit blood and intensifies his resentment over losing access to her potential soul ring 38.
He rejects Tang Hao’s offer to handle revenge, declaring that he will make Qin Chuan suffer himself. Tang Hao proposes giving him a hidden gift before taking him to Slaughter City to accumulate killing aura and obtain the Divine Slaughter’s Domain; obtaining the domain is not shown in the supplied passages 39.
When father and son reach the hidden clearing, they discover an empty excavation. Qin Chuan and Bibi Dong have already removed Ah Yin’s seed and the Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone. Tang Hao leaves to pursue them, ordering Tang San back to the cabin 38 39.
Several hours later, Tang Hao returns and admits that Qin Chuan and Bibi Dong took the hidden resources and that he could not recover them. He does not tell Tang San about the forced confession or his humiliation during the confrontation. Tang San’s anger grows as he connects the lost gift with his ruined reputation and Xiao Wu’s departure 41 42.
Departure for Slaughter City
Despite losing the soul bone, Tang Hao maintains that Tang San’s planned path remains open: the Divine Slaughter’s Domain requires killing intent and willpower rather than a soul bone. He instructs Tang San to prepare to leave 42.
Tang San burns Xiao Wu’s bracelet, stone, and drawing in a brazier. After watching them turn to ash without crying, he departs Holy Soul Village with his father and does not look back 42.
Tang Hao later confirms that he took Tang San to Slaughter City and left him there. His account indicates that Tang San is struggling emotionally, with fear accompanying his hatred and resentment, and that his behavior has raised concerns about whether he can control himself. No completed Slaughter City trial, new soul-power rank, or acquisition of the Divine Slaughter’s Domain is confirmed 47.
Continuing Conflict with Qin Chuan
While Tang San remains offstage, Tang Hao seeks Yu Xiaogang’s research into the God of Drama martial soul and its possible counters. Yu Xiaogang reaffirms that Tang San is his student and that he remains on his side despite the tournament revelations 47 48.
Shrek Academy’s subsequent opening of a Game Hall branch in partnership with Qin Chuan enrages Tang Hao, who views cooperation with his son’s enemy as betrayal. He later damages the branch and injures Yu Xiaogang, driving Shrek’s senior staff firmly toward Qin Chuan 66 77.
After learning of the attack, Qin Chuan asks Liu Erlong whether she knows where Tang San has gone. She reports that she has not seen him, and Qin Chuan instructs her to inform him if Tang San appears 77.
