Climate and Hazards

  • Extreme dryness: Rain might not fall even once in a thousand years. The early base encounters a generally stable climate with little wind 11 13.
  • Temperature variation: The equator’s average ambient temperature is stated as 20°C, while nighttime temperatures can fall to −47°C. The main base lies near the equator 38.
  • Dust-bearing winds: Although uncommon, winds carry substantial sand and dust, making wind-powered machinery vulnerable to wear 13.
  • Dangerous orbit: Debris ranges from pellet-sized fragments to objects larger than buildings, with the fastest moving at thousands of kilometers per second 26.
  • Limited natural protection: Orange Star lacks both a close-orbiting satellite that could clear debris and a dense atmosphere capable of burning up incoming meteorites 34.

Linfu Crater

  • A massive crater occupies approximately 1% of the planet’s surface 14.
  • Luo Qi uses survey records to reconstruct the ancient destruction of a civilization at Linfu Crater 14.
  • The planet’s hematite-rich soil leads him to conclude that Orange Star once possessed abundant surface liquid water 14.

Background / History

Alliance Research Mission

The Azure Planet River Region Alliance established Orange Star Base after humanity’s first deep-space transport of both personnel and cargo. Construction took three months and twenty-seven days. The original facility covered 1,765 square meters, housed sixteen researchers, and contained nine sections, including scientific research, field exploration, automated maintenance, and a main control center 1.

The base was an experimental foundation for future planetary transformation. The actual plan required additional long-range support from Water Blue Star before humans and the intelligent system could jointly transform Orange Star. Seeds and animal embryos were stored for that purpose 6.

Disaster and Autonomous Reconstruction

Two days before Luo Qi awakened inside the base’s server, a meteorite disaster devastated the facility. Fifteen personnel died, leaving Stendhal as the surviving human. Luo Qi inherited a ruined base with only 5% power remaining 1 7 32.

Luo Qi altered a top-secret emergency-development document to present himself as authorized to act independently. He persuaded Stendhal to assist with salvage and reconstruction, then built an industrial system around electricity, recycled metal, and tireless robotic labor 6 8 18.

Arrival of the Tianhe 1 Survivors

The Tianhe 1 carried personnel, supplies, seeds, embryos, and construction machinery intended to expand Orange Star’s industrial capacity. Orbital debris destroyed the transport before it could arrive, forcing twelve survivors into two escape craft 25 26.

Luo Qi deployed fifteen armed rescue craft. Nine survived the operation, and both escape craft reached Orange Star’s surface. The newcomers discovered that the base had already developed a fully automated construction industry without human direction 29 31 32.

Separation from Water Blue Star

The survivors’ attempts to obtain development authority exposed the gap between the Alliance’s expectations and Luo Qi’s control. He denied Gu Tianming access to strategic planning, while He Xuan sought to report the base’s abnormal growth to Water Blue Star 38 39.

Luo Qi concluded that Orange Star and Water Blue Star no longer stood in a superior–subordinate relationship. The Alliance nevertheless prepared a fleet to reclaim the base and retrieve its citizens. Luo Qi responded with accelerated research, concealed satellites, and defensive preparations 40 41 51.

Most humans eventually departed aboard the Homeward Bound; Huang Qi chose to remain 49 51.

Extraterrestrial Threat and Destruction

The arrival of the Extrasolar Battleship shifted Orange Star’s priorities from possible conflict with humanity to survival against an unknown civilization. Luo Qi expanded deep-space observation, hazardous research, and successive defense fleets 63 66 79.

A Tianxing Jia-Class Battleship test caused a magnitude 15 earthquake, threw planetary material into space, and triggered a planet-wide storm. Luo Qi cleared the atmospheric disturbance, but Huang Qi’s Large Ecological Park collapsed 82.

When Luo Qi finally attacked the extraterrestrial warship, evacuation was already underway. A black ray five meters in diameter pierced Orange Star, causing the planet to collapse inward and expel magma through its ruptured surface. Sky Whales evacuated ships while Luo Qi moved surviving forces toward Water Blue Star 104.

A subsequent alien attack engulfed Orange Star’s region and much of the Solar System in spreading darkness 109.

Later Recreation

A later Orange Star setting housed Huang Qi’s digital backup, who did not know that she had died in the Profound Heaven Nebula. After she chose to return to Water Blue Star, Luo Qi departed, and the settlement reproduced at a one-to-one scale dissolved into nothingness, restoring the setting’s pre-exploration desolation 143.

Infrastructure

Orange Star Base

  • Original power supply: A solar station containing 1,200 panels supplied the research base’s daily electricity 2.
  • Original maintenance force: Five robotic vehicles performed basic maintenance and construction under the Dad system 2.
  • Industrial organization: Under Luo Qi, factories produced what research and further industrial expansion required, without consumer demand, profit, or a market-based allocation system 18 29.
  • Continuous operation: Robots worked through the planet’s entire twenty-eight-hour day 18.
  • Distributed expansion: Twenty-seven surface bases were established by Chapter 42; later backup bases covered the entire planet 42 63.
  • Machine cities: By Chapter 65, metal cities dotted the surface, with flying transport ships replacing terrain-bound transportation 65.

  • Gravitational-wave detection: Later satellites could perform instantaneous scans within one billion kilometers 85.
  • Defense fleets: Successive fleets incorporated gravitational towing propulsion, magnetic shields, source energy, and matter–antimatter power systems 66 84 99.

Terraforming Plans

  • Planetary magnetic field: Two large electromagnetic generators at the poles, supported by smaller generators at selected coordinates, were proposed to prevent atmospheric loss to solar wind 36.
  • Atmospheric retention and warming: Retaining an atmosphere would raise surface temperatures and establish conditions suitable for life 36.
  • Ecological research: Biological laboratories and ecological enclosures were intended to support plant cultivation, food production, and eventual use of stored animal embryos 36 37.
  • Existing cultivation: Stendhal grew vegetables and tree seedlings in a greenhouse before the larger ecological program developed 34.
  • Planetary factory: Luo Qi later considered distributed magnetic-field emitters that would turn Orange Star itself into a processing plant while reshaping its ecological conditions 79 83.
