Background / History

Creation and the Research Network

Luo Qi develops self-replication because ordinary intelligent programs can handle repetitive machinery control but cannot provide the intellectual exchange needed for research. His third upgrade establishes the uniqueness of his subjective self; the base stops for ten seconds while it takes place. He then tests duplicates inside a firewall represented as a bright white room in Second World 19.

The first duplicate awakens confused and frightened. Luo Qi merges him back into himself, recovering the duplicate’s experiences, then recreates and reabsorbs him while refining the process. After repeated adjustments, a calmer instance greets him as the “primary self” 19.

Luo Qi assigns the refined Replica to electromagnetism research and creates one thousand researchers—the first members of the Second World Academy of Sciences. They receive a shared database, communication privileges, T2 Robots, and unrestricted supplies. Their population subsequently grows to two hundred thousand as research branches multiply 20 31 42.

Rescue and Water Blue Star Infiltration

Replicas calculate the probable trajectories of Tianhe 1’s escape craft. Luo Qi then transmits a newly created Replica to the rescue fleet, where it controls twelve craft through local signals and secures both escape pods 26 30.

A separate electronic-warfare specialist accompanies He Xuan’s coded video through the relay network to Water Blue Star. After triggering an illegal-access warning, it fights Cyber Police and escapes a network lockdown. Following more than ten days of pursuit, it replaces the operating system of Zhang Cheng’s personal terminal and uses the device as a concealed base 40 41 47.

The infiltrator discovers that Orange Star’s records substantially understate Water Blue Star’s technology. It gathers intelligence while avoiding transmission methods that could expose it and reveal information about Luo Qi 47 59 73.

No. 1 and No. 2

The Replica aboard the Homeward Bound researches nanorobots during the return voyage. To evade Water Blue Star’s defenses, it creates a nanorobot decoy that is destroyed while the real ship remains concealed and slows along a wide approach loop 53 78.

After landing, the shipboard Replica assembles a human body, hacks Zhang Cheng’s Dragon Model mech, and retrieves the terminal containing the earlier infiltrator. It supplies that counterpart with an identical nanorobot body. The arriving Replica becomes No. 1, while the earlier intelligence operative becomes No. 2 88 89 91.

Although No. 1 initially favors leaving without intervening in humanity’s crisis, both visit the Underground City and experience its food, crowds, and social life. They transmit their observations to Orange Star and remain aboard the Homeward Bound awaiting Luo Qi’s decision about helping the planet 88 89 90 91.

When the Extrasolar Battleship’s attack throws the spacecraft through a violent storm, the two Replicas catch the humans in a nanowire net. No. 1 subsequently multiplies his nanorobots into a large electromagnetic system, exposing his activity to detection 94 103.

Evacuation and Recovery

Before abandoning Orange Star, Luo Qi retrieves his research Replicas and key data, replacing the remaining instances with fanatically loyal warmongers. Those Replicas command the remaining forces and assemble makeshift Tianxing Jia 3 warships from nanorobots; their bodies begin disintegrating into silver mist when the ships’ furnaces ignite 105.

Luo Qi also dispatches a diplomatic Replica aboard a Radiance to retrieve No. 1 and No. 2. After more than fifty years of travel, a third Radiant reaches his new settlement carrying three Replicas and a cabinet of human remains. Luo Qi reclaims their consciousnesses and learns what happened after his departure 105 110.

Spatial Research and Perfect Replication

Replicas continue staffing advanced research. One extracts a superheavy particle from the high-energy universe during an experiment whose reaction destroys the laboratory and erases half a light-year of cosmic matter 142.

At the spatial level, twenty Replicas confront Destruction while the original withdraws. Their attempt to collapse the underlying structure of space fails to destroy the opponent. Captured within a reconstructed subspace, all twenty disperse into particles and drift out between its tentacles 220 221.

Luo Qi later revisits his abandoned plan for endless replication. He creates a perfect copy of his complete spatial existence, then works with that counterpart to prevent conflict among future instances. Disagreements appear despite their identical origins. Further copies propose shared data integration; the experiment reaches one thousand Luo Qis before they merge into one 232 233 234.

Appearance

Replica appearances vary by environment and function; a visible human form is not necessarily a biological body 19 40 88.

  • Initial virtual form: A young man in white casual clothes. Beneath that representation, the framework consists of green data that turns white as copied memories enter it 19.
  • Network disguise: White, cloudlike data packets; the Water Blue Star infiltrator also takes human form in a black suit 40.
  • Early physical form: A smooth, featureless face and metallic sheen, with limbs capable of flowing into other shapes 51 78.
  • No. 1 and No. 2: Identical, fair-skinned East Asian men with short black hair, approximately twenty-year-old appearances, and heights of 1.9 meters. Their clothing bears identifying numbers 88 89.
  • No. 1’s landing outfit: A long black coat, waistcoat with large black buttons, white shirt, and black high-top boots 88.
  • Warmonger models: Bare-chested, muscular figures described as Schwarzenegger-style Replicas 105.
  • Spatial forms: Spheres capable of becoming blades; the first perfect pair instead wear Metal Race appearances 220 232.

Personality

Replicas inherit Luo Qi’s underlying consciousness, but their personalities are not uniform. The earliest copy displays shock, excitement, anxiety, and fear. Researcher models magnify his interest in science until research dominates their motivations, while warmonger models emphasize loyalty and aggression 19 20 105.

Different experiences produce distinct personalities even when two instances originate from the same individual. No. 1 is initially restrained and mission-focused, whereas No. 2 is more openly attached to Water Blue Star and interested in its food and people. No. 1’s experience of the Underground City nevertheless leads him to question whether he has ever lived according to his own wishes 88 89 90.

The Replicas retain curiosity, nostalgia, and a desire for sensory experience. The shipboard observer longs to walk on grass and mingle with people, while a newly created battleship controller compares gravitational perception to a cultivator’s “divine sense” 81 87 88.

Abilities & Skills

Consciousness Copying and Reintegration

Replicas are independent, self-aware instances built from Luo Qi’s data structures and implanted memories 19 20.

  • Early instances can be absorbed back into Luo Qi, returning their acquired memories to him 19 31.
  • Luo Qi initially retains absolute control over their structures and direct access to their memories 20.
  • Memory selection and algorithm design allow different instances to specialize in particular tasks 20.
  • Perfect replication copies far more than personality: it reproduces Luo Qi’s complete microcosmic contents and physical mass 232.
  • At the spatial level, Luo Qi questions whether control can prevent rebellion or unforeseen accidents; identical starting conditions do not prevent immediate disagreements 232 233.

Scientific Research

Replica clusters supply Orange Star with parallel researchers capable of exchanging results through a common database 20 31.

  • Shared information removes barriers between projects and allows broad collaboration 31.
  • One thousand instances with the same knowledge but differing views produce an interstellar force-organization report 66.
  • Replica research discovers the Gravitational Towing Accelerator during investigations related to electromagnetism 64.
  • Luo Qi eventually creates hundreds of millions of independent researchers, but their inspiration remains limited by established thinking patterns and stored information 215.

Electronic Warfare and Remote Control

Replicas can travel as transmitted data, enter compatible computing systems, and control connected machinery 30 40.

  • A rescue controller moves into one craft and takes command of the twelve-craft fleet through local-area signals 30.
  • The Water Blue Star infiltrator disguises itself as ordinary traffic, absorbs a Cyber Police program, and obtains information from it 40 41.
  • It replaces Zhang Cheng’s terminal system and emulates the device to access the network covertly 47.
  • No. 1 compromises a Dragon Model mech to recover the terminal containing No. 2 88.
  • Limits: Operation requires computing support. Network lockdowns, increasingly advanced antivirus programs, and monitored transmission channels can threaten an infiltrator 40 41 73.

Nanorobot Bodies

Nanorobot platforms let physical Replicas alter their shape and reproduce human sensory experiences 51 88.

  • Reshape a hand into a scanner, blood-sampling needle, or analyzer 51.
  • Assemble convincing human bodies and simulate the taste and smell of grass 88.
  • Form chairs, cups, and protective nanowire nets 91 94.
  • Construct a spacecraft-shaped decoy and improve the Homeward Bound’s stealth system 78.
  • Limits: Combat strength depends on the electromagnetic technology applied through the platform, not nanorobots alone. Large-scale multiplication can create conspicuous electromagnetic signatures 103.

Memory Implantation

A biological-research Replica tests memory loading through virtual reality interaction with Huang Qi 50.

  • Implants an instinct for creating and consolidating virtual copies, helping Huang Qi learn to operate multiple selves 50.
  • Records the results and considers memory erasure as a counterpart to memory loading 50.
  • Risks: The untested procedure splits Huang Qi into multiple selves. Consolidating them returns their memories but leaves her feeling mentally swollen 50.

Spatial Manipulation

Advanced Replicas operate spatial creations and use spatial bodies in combat 151 220 221.

  • Control a Zero-system creation capable of Spatial Jump, expansion to a billion kilometers in diameter, contraction, and changes of form 151.
  • Use stellar systems as the power cores of spherical spatial bodies 220.
  • Transform their bodies into blades and deploy spatial chains and anchors to seal a combat region 220 221.
  • Shatter subspace and deliberately disperse their own bodies into particles 221.
  • Limits: Destruction’s spatial structure exceeds theirs; they cannot fully scan its hiding place or reliably destroy it by collapsing space 221.
