Arc 2The Road Through the Black Tide

Fan Shang joined Liu Tie’s convoy, helped defeat the Grudge-Crying Ghosts, and learned more about Little Black and the world’s dangers. After escaping a deadly rain calamity, the convoy chose to take the Provincial Highway so its Sequence Users could grow stronger.

  • Liu Tie invited Fan Shang into the convoy, and Fan Shang met his former classmates Tang Qingyu and Tang Qingxue, who guarded a handbook they hoped would awaken them.
  • The convoy entered Jinghuai Town to scavenge, where a blood-covered infant spirit killed survivors and forced everyone to flee.
  • When Grudge-Crying Ghosts attacked the convoy, Fan Shang gained Yin-Yang Eyes, helped Liu Tie and Lin Xue kill them, and earned Survival Points.
  • Fan Shang killed a survivor who demanded that Sequence Users compensate and protect the crowd, and Liu Tie warned others not to make the same demand.
  • Liu Tie told Fan Shang about Little Black, Sequence ranks, and the powerful Hope Convoy leader Li Cunxing, while Zhou Ping agreed to supply Fan Shang with Rune Meat Porridge in exchange for protection.
  • Fan Shang used 4,000 Survival Points to enhance Little Black’s bloodline, then escaped with the convoy when an unnatural rainstorm threatened to submerge the highway.
  • Liu Tie identified the storm as a calamity created by Rain Man, and the convoy drove beyond its range as the Black Tide engulfed Jiang City.
  • Fan Shang agreed to join Liu Tie’s plan to take the convoy onto the Provincial Highway, and Zhou Ping and Lin Xue chose to go with them.
Chapters 26–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 26The [House Guard] Sequence

Fan Shang officially joined Liu Tie’s convoy and told Liu Tie, Zhou Ping, and Lin Xue that he belonged to the [House Guard] Sequence, while keeping the details of his abilities vague. After sharing Rune Meat Porridge and discussing their sequences, the group settled in for the night.

  • Liu Tie invited Fan Shang to join the convoy, and Fan Shang accepted, prompting Zhou Ping to celebrate the addition of a fourth Sequence Transcendent.
  • Fan Shang discovered that only the first mouthful of each pot of Rune Meat Porridge increased constitution and wondered whether different ingredients could produce other benefits.
  • Fan Shang chose not to reveal his full abilities and described his [House Guard] Sequence as an offensive sequence that grew stronger against unauthorized intruders in his territory.
  • Zhou Ping reacted awkwardly to Fan Shang’s sequence, while Lin Xue and Liu Tie defended its usefulness.
  • The group finished the Rune Meat Porridge, and Fan Shang lay back down in the vehicle.

Ch. 27Tang Qingyu and Tang Qingxue

Fan Shang woke to find the convoy’s survivors preparing a sparse meal and recognized his former classmates, the twins Tang Qingyu and Tang Qingxue. Tang Qingyu feared that Fan Shang might learn their secret, while the handbook she guarded promised a path for the sisters to awaken as Sequence Transcendents.

  • Fan Shang woke after surviving the night and saw that the eerie moon had vanished, leaving the sun overhead.
  • Fan Shang noticed Fatty Cheng, the counselor’s family, and his former classmates Tang Qingyu and Tang Qingxue among the remaining convoy survivors.
  • Tang Qingyu and Tang Qingxue grew wary when Fan Shang looked their way, then recognized him as their former classmate and learned he had become a Sequence Transcendent.
  • Tang Qingyu warned Tang Qingxue not to reveal their secret handbook, recalling the danger they faced from other survivors and insisting they needed a Yin Object to awaken.
  • Tang Qingyu retrieved the glowing Corpse Stitcher’s Handbook and believed a Yin Object would let her understand it and awaken into the [Corpse Stitcher] Sequence.

Ch. 28A human city

Fan Shang ate instant noodles, learned that the convoy would pass a supply point, and traveled with the others toward a terrifying, ruined city. The convoy stopped before entering the city, where a sign revealed they had reached Jinghuai Town.

  • Fan Shang cooked instant noodles beside his car while Little Black neared the end of its assimilation.
  • Liu Tie told Fan Shang, Zhou Ping, and Lin Xue to prepare to gather supplies at a point the convoy would pass around two in the afternoon.
  • Fan Shang asked Zhou Ping how Liu Tie knew the supply point's location, and Zhou Ping guessed it might relate to Liu Tie's sequence or past.
  • The convoy traveled for nearly five hours and spotted a ruined city that filled Fan Shang and the other survivors with dread.
  • The convoy stopped before reaching the city, and the mist cleared to reveal a sign reading Jinghuai Town.

Ch. 29Laughter and handprints

Fan Shang and the convoy entered Jinghuai Town to scavenge supplies before leaving the area. After an invisible horror attacked a survivor, Fan Shang saw a blood-covered infant spirit and fled as screams erupted throughout the town.

  • Liu Tie explained the half-hour scavenging limit and told the group to prepare to enter Jinghuai Town.
  • Zhou Ping offered survivors stamina-boosting porridge in exchange for twenty percent of their supplies, while Liu Tie demanded the same share from those following the Sequence Users.
  • Fan Shang and the others searched the deserted town, and Fan Shang filled his bag with supplies from shops.
  • A survivor across the street begged Fan Shang for help against something he could not see, but Fan Shang ran toward his car.
  • Fan Shang saw a blood-red handprint appear on the man's back, then watched a blood-covered infant spirit drain him and turn toward Fan Shang.
  • Fan Shang escaped by car as the infant giggled and screams spread through the town.

Ch. 30Everyone showed their skills, an incorporeal horror

Fan Shang, Liu Tie, and the convoy escaped a town pursued by an incorporeal horror, but the danger followed them. Fan Shang’s symbiosis with the Heterochromatic Black Cat completed just as a scream erupted among the survivors.

  • Fan Shang and Liu Tie led the survivors out of town as horrors attacked those who fell behind.
  • Zhou Ping recognized the convoy’s frantic escape as a warning and fled, while the people waiting outside panicked too late.
  • After driving for hours, the survivors stopped and discovered that more than twenty people were missing or dead.
  • Zhou Ping and Liu Tie argued, and Liu Tie revealed that they had encountered an incorporeal horror.
  • Fan Shang’s symbiosis with the Heterochromatic Black Cat completed as someone screamed for help inside the convoy.

Ch. 31Grudge-Crying Ghost

A bluish-purple baby-like weird entity attacked survivors in the convoy, killing the Tattooed Man and then targeting a sleazy young man. When the young man begged Liu Tie for help and blocked his car, Liu Tie killed him with a punch as the entity remained behind him.

  • The Tattooed Man screamed as a bluish-purple hand grabbed his shoulder, and the survivors realized a weird entity was attacking when water hung in midair behind him.
  • The bluish-purple baby appeared on the Tattooed Man’s back, cried, and twisted his neck before vanishing.
  • The convoy panicked and scattered, while Fan Shang’s group prepared to flee from the head of the convoy.
  • The weird entity targeted a sleazy young man, who ran to Liu Tie’s car and begged him to save him in exchange for his supplies.
  • Liu Tie ordered the young man to move, then punched him and burst his head when he refused to get out of the way.

Ch. 32Coexistence Complete, Yin-Yang Eyes LV1

The convoy fell into chaos as an invisible uncanny creature killed survivors, while Fan Shang extracted Yin-Yang Eyes from Little Black. Fan Shang gained a blue-gold eye that changed his vision, leaving him poised to see what ordinary people could not.

  • Liu Tie killed a man after an uncanny child vanished, but another woman was chosen and blocked Zhou Ping's car.
  • The bluish-purple infant appeared behind the woman, tore off her head, and vanished as survivors fought over cars and escape routes.
  • Liu Tie and Fan Shang abandoned their cars as the convoy became too dangerous to flee through.
  • Fan Shang saw that his Edict of Coexistence had strengthened Little Black and offered him a choice between Evil-Repelling and Yin-Yang Eyes.
  • Fan Shang extracted Yin-Yang Eyes, and a blue-gold vertical pupil appeared in his left eye as his vision changed.

Ch. 33No escape, [Sacrificial Object] Bloodstained Rotten Incense

Fan Shang used his azure-gold eye to see the Grudge-Crying Ghosts marking survivors, while Liu Tie prepared to use a rotten incense Sacrificial Object against them. Fan Shang took the incense and agreed to guide Liu Tie’s attack, as the group faced the threat of being trapped and killed.

  • Fan Shang saw bluish-purple infants clinging to marked survivors and killed a man who ran toward him, but his axe passed through the infant on the man’s back.
  • The infant moved to mark another survivor, while Liu Tie and the others realized they could not escape the Grudge-Crying Ghost.
  • Liu Tie took out a half-rotten stick of incense and explained that its smoke drew weird entities in and revealed their locations.
  • Fan Shang stopped Liu Tie from lighting the incense, took it, and said his eye already let him see the ghost.
  • Fan Shang learned the incense was a consumable Sacrificial Object that attracted both weird entities and the person who lit it.
  • Liu Tie asked Fan Shang to direct his attack, and the temperature around them began to drop.

Ch. 34Marked, Another Announcement

The Grudge-Crying Ghost marked the convoy survivors and killed them despite Lin Xue’s ice attacks. Fan Shang’s death announcement revealed that the ghost became physical while killing, and he realized this offered a way to fight it as the ghost crawled toward Zhou Ping.

  • Lin Xue’s ice crystals passed through the Grudge-Crying Ghost, which continued killing survivors and marking them.
  • The ghost marked Zhou Ping, while Liu Tie prepared talismans and Zhou Ping handed out strength-boosting objects.
  • Fan Shang realized he and the others had been marked, triggering a death announcement that revealed the ghost took physical form while killing.
  • Fan Shang inferred that his announcements required him to be under threat and recognized a possible way to kill the ghost.
  • Zhou Ping warned that the Grudge-Crying Ghost was crawling toward him.

Ch. 35Pulling out all the stops

Fan Shang directed Liu Tie and Lin Xue to strike the Grudge-Crying Ghost when it revealed its physical form to kill Zhou Ping. They wounded it and saved Zhou Ping, but the ghost rapidly healed and overwhelmed Liu Tie, leaving the fight unresolved.

  • Fan Shang told the others that the Grudge-Crying Ghost became vulnerable when it revealed its true form, and Zhou Ping waited as it targeted him.
  • The Grudge-Crying Ghost appeared on Zhou Ping and reached for his head, but Liu Tie and Lin Xue attacked it.
  • Liu Tie smashed the ghost's skull with his hoe, forcing it into physical form and freeing Zhou Ping from its icy presence.
  • The Grudge-Crying Ghost survived, healed its wounds with black mist, and attacked Liu Tie as his strikes failed to stop it.
  • Liu Tie called on Lin Xue to attack while the ghost continued to regenerate.

Ch. 36Taking action: excuse me, Grudge-Crying Ghost

Liu Tie and the others defeated one Grudge-Crying Ghost, but a second one appeared on Liu Tie’s back and nearly killed him. Fan Shang intervened with the ghost road and his axe, then attacked the creature as the others watched.

  • Lin Xue froze the Grudge-Crying Ghost, and Liu Tie beat it down with his hoe until it dissolved, leaving an eyeball behind.
  • A second Grudge-Crying Ghost appeared on Liu Tie’s back, and he could not pull it off.
  • Liu Tie used a Lightness Talisman to hold back the creature’s hand and prepared to use his second talisman.
  • Fan Shang summoned the ghost road, rushed in with his Fire Axe, and chopped the Grudge-Crying Ghost off Liu Tie’s back.
  • Fan Shang advanced on the wounded creature and lunged at its forehead with his axe.

Ch. 37Danger averted, borrowing a Yin Object

Fan Shang overwhelmed and killed the Grudge-Crying Ghost, using his Ghost Road to prevent it from escaping. He picked up the skull it left behind and received Survival Points for assisting in and completing the kill.

  • Fan Shang pinned the Grudge-Crying Ghost down and repeatedly hacked at it while eerie blue flames burned away its black mist.
  • The weakened ghost feigned an attack, then tried to flee, but Fan Shang extended a Ghost Road to trap it.
  • Fan Shang caught up with the ghost and chopped it apart, killing it and leaving behind a small skull.
  • Liu Tie explained that the skull could be used by certain Sequences to make Sacrificial Objects, while Little Black came to Fan Shang's side.
  • Fan Shang received 500 Survival Points for assisting in the kill and 2,000 for killing the Grudge-Crying Ghost.

Ch. 38You can't take this punch-excuse me, kindhearted fairy (part one)

Fan Shang and Little Black killed the Grudge-Crying Ghosts, but the attack left nearly twenty convoy members dead. As Liu Tie organized the survivors, a woman blamed Fan Shang and the sequence users for failing to protect them sooner.

  • Fan Shang checked his survival points, and Liu Tie explained that his injuries came from using a talisman.
  • Zhou Ping questioned Fan Shang about the Ghost Road and Little Black, and Fan Shang claimed they were part of his House Guard abilities.
  • Liu Tie led the group back to the convoy, where they found that the two Grudge-Crying Ghosts had killed nearly twenty people.
  • A woman grieving beside her man's body accused Fan Shang of acting too late and getting the victims killed.
  • Zhou Ping defended Fan Shang, but the woman insisted that the sequence users should have protected everyone, and Zhou Ping angrily challenged her.

Ch. 39You can't take this punch-excuse me, helpful fairy (part 2)

Fan Shang confronted a woman who blamed him for the survivors’ deaths and demanded supplies and future protection. After she continued making demands, Fan Shang killed her with an axe.

  • The woman claimed Sequence Users were responsible for protecting ordinary people, and some survivors agreed with her.
  • Fan Shang stopped Zhou Ping from attacking and asked the woman what compensation she wanted.
  • The woman demanded supplies for herself and the crowd, blaming Fan Shang for deaths during the monster attack.
  • Fan Shang challenged the crowd to explain why their losses were his fault, but the woman insisted he owed them supplies and protection.
  • Fan Shang asked whether she was finished, then killed her with an axe.

Ch. 40Liu Tie's warning: this was the apocalypse!

Fan Shang killed a woman who had provoked him, and Liu Tie warned the survivors that Sequence transcendents had no duty to protect them. The convoy cleared the road and continued until nightfall, where it stopped to rest.

  • Fan Shang killed the woman with his axe as Jiang Yu watched with resentment.
  • Zhou Ping called Fan Shang badass, and Liu Tie and Lin Xue approved of his actions.
  • Liu Tie told the survivors that he would kill anyone who demanded protection from Sequence transcendents.
  • The convoy cleaned up and removed the bodies, then set off again without delay.
  • The convoy traveled until nightfall, stopped to rest, and the survivors resumed talking and laughing.

Ch. 41Brother Shang and Little Black

Fan Shang joined Liu Tie, Zhou Ping, and Lin Xue for a meal after they invited him to the front of the convoy. Liu Tie recognized Little Black as a rare Heterochromatic Black Cat, leaving Fan Shang curious about what made the cat special.

  • Fan Shang prepared instant noodles and extra food for Little Black, then went to meet Liu Tie after the Tall, Thin Man delivered the invitation.
  • Zhou Ping explained that the convoy had adopted the nickname Brother Shang because Fan Shang had helped save them, and Liu Tie thanked him for his role in defeating the Grudge-Crying Ghost.
  • Lin Xue used her ability to make ice, replenishing the water in the pot as the group cooked noodles.
  • Liu Tie identified Little Black as a Heterochromatic Black Cat and said he had believed the rare cat was only a rumor.
  • Fan Shang asked Liu Tie what he meant, eager to learn more about Little Black.

Ch. 42Strange Tales, Making Way for the First A-Rank Sequence [Wandering Immortal]

Liu Tie explained to Fan Shang and the others that folk objects such as black dog blood could harm weird entities, recounting how the Hope Convoy survived an encounter with them. He also described Li Cunxing’s A-Rank Wandering Immortal Sequence and suggested a Beast Tamer could awaken Little Black’s bloodline, while Fan Shang knew he could do so by other means.

  • Liu Tie told Fan Shang that black dog blood, Peachwood Swords, and other objects from Dragon Nation folklore really worked against weird entities.
  • Liu Tie recalled that the Hope Convoy had over five thousand members and was led by Li Cunxing, an A-Rank Sequence User who had reached Sequence Two.
  • Liu Tie recounted how Li Cunxin used black dog blood and an Ink Line Reel to make bodiless weird entities physical, saving the convoy.
  • Liu Tie suggested that Little Black might have helped the convoy avoid danger and said a Beast Tamer could awaken its bloodline.
  • Fan Shang smiled without answering, knowing he could awaken Little Black’s bloodline without the Beast Tamer Sequence.

Ch. 43Sequence rankings: not on the same level

Fan Shang asked Liu Tie how sequence ranks were determined, and Liu Tie explained that they measured how effectively sequences could harm anomalies. He described the power gap between the ranks and recalled seeing Li Cunxing’s A-rank strength, leaving Fan Shang with a striking example of how far above other sequences A-rank abilities could be.

  • Fan Shang asked Liu Tie how sequences received their ranks, and Liu Tie explained that the ranks were standards established by people based on sequences’ effects on anomalies.
  • Liu Tie described D-rank sequences as unable to threaten anomalies and C-rank sequences as capable of some harm, though the anomalies’ black mist made them difficult to kill.
  • Liu Tie explained that B-rank sequences could counter the black mist effectively, while A-rank sequences were uniquely powerful and on another level.
  • Liu Tie recalled that, at sequence two, Li Cunxing had flown into a revolt and defeated a hundred people, including several sequence transcendents, with little injury.
  • Liu Tie told Fan Shang that witnessing Li Cunxing’s fight had convinced him A-rank sequences were incomparable to the others.

Ch. 44Brother Shang, Your Sequence Has to Be B-Rank, Right? Taking You as My Adoptive Father

Liu Tie explained the power rankings and admitted that even an A-rank Sequence might not survive the Weird World, while an S-rank Sequence was only a rumor he chose to believe in. After Zhou Ping tried to make Fan Shang his adoptive father in exchange for protection, Fan Shang offered a practical deal: he would protect Zhou Ping as best he could in return for Rune Meat Porridge.

  • Liu Tie told Zhou Ping that powerful Sequence Transcendents could fly and kill more than a hundred people in an hour, and that even Captain Li’s A-rank Sequence might not be enough to survive.
  • Liu Tie said he had heard of a legendary S-rank Sequence from Captain Li, though he did not know whether it existed.
  • Fan Shang served noodles to Little Black and noticed Zhou Ping watching him curiously.
  • Zhou Ping asked whether Fan Shang had a B-rank Sequence, then offered to become his lackey or adopted son in exchange for protection.
  • Fan Shang kicked Zhou Ping when he tried to kneel, then offered to protect him within his abilities if Zhou Ping supplied him with Rune Meat Porridge.
  • Zhou Ping solemnly accepted Fan Shang’s deal.

Ch. 45Dividing the Yin Objects

Liu Tie gathered Fan Shang, Lin Xue, and Zhou Ping to divide the Yin Object obtained from an eerie creature, while Fan Shang offered up another Yin Object of his own. After agreeing on shares, the group decided to let Zhou Ping use the object to make Rune Meat Porridge, and he asked for a share of the result.

  • Liu Tie teased Zhou Ping for siding with Fan Shang, then let him go after briefly squeezing him in a mock punishment.
  • Liu Tie explained that convoy rules required them to discuss dividing the Yin Object from the eerie creature they had killed.
  • Fan Shang declined a share because he had not helped with Liu Tie's kill, then revealed the Yin Object left by the other eerie creature he had killed.
  • Liu Tie and Lin Xue refused to take shares of Fan Shang's object, while Fan Shang argued Liu Tie had helped him by holding the creature down.
  • Liu Tie divided the first Yin Object among himself, Lin Xue, and Fan Shang, giving Fan Shang an extra share for saving his life.
  • The group chose to have Zhou Ping use the Yin Object to make Rune Meat Porridge, and Zhou Ping asked to receive a share too.

Ch. 46Bloodline Awakening, Rain

Fan Shang spent 4,000 survival points to begin awakening Little Black’s bloodline while resting in his car during a storm. Liu Tie warned him that the rain was abnormal and threatened to submerge the convoy, so Fan Shang and the other survivors hurried to escape.

  • After eating Rune Meat Porridge, Fan Shang felt stronger and got into his car with Little Black as heavy rain began.
  • Fan Shang decided Little Black could become a major source of strength and used 4,000 survival points to start enhancing its bloodline, leaving it to sleep in the back seat.
  • Four hours later, Liu Tie called Fan Shang over the vehicle radio and warned that the rain was abnormal and the convoy would soon be submerged.
  • Fan Shang saw pools of water outside and heard the rain grow thunderously loud as Liu Tie ordered everyone to leave immediately.
  • Liu Tie drove off and used a loudspeaker to wake the survivors, who started their vehicles and raced after his SUV.

Ch. 47Natural disaster, calamity?

Fan Shang and the convoy escaped the flooded highway, and Liu Tie explained that the rainstorm was a natural disaster caused by the weird entity Rain Man after a city was swallowed by the black tide. The chapter left Fan Shang staring at a waterspout where he glimpsed a towering, umbrella-bearing figure with many heads around its neck.

  • Fan Shang and the others watched the highway flood and followed Liu Tie's convoy out of the danger zone.
  • Liu Tie identified the storm as a natural disaster, while Zhou Ping recognized it and Lin Xue watched the waterspout in silence.
  • Fan Shang realized the rain's sound had lulled him into relaxing and falling asleep, and Liu Tie described how he had noticed his own reluctance to look outside.
  • Liu Tie said natural disasters appeared when the black tide swallowed part of the world and explained that Rain Man had created the rainstorm.
  • Fan Shang saw a huge, thin silhouette holding an umbrella inside the waterspout, with dozens of bulges around its neck.

Ch. 48Safe for now, the lucky ones

Fan Shang and Liu Tie’s convoy escaped the Person in the Rain’s calamity and stopped to rest, while the Black Tide devastated Jiang City. Outside the city, Cheng Qian led a group of survivors onto a mysterious highway to escape.

  • Liu Tie sped up the convoy after seeing the terrifying figure in the tornado, and the group kept driving until the calamity faded.
  • Liu Tie led the convoy beyond the calamity’s range, where the survivors saw the Weird Moon and agreed to rest for the night.
  • The Black Tide engulfed Jiang City as monsters and a deadly rain disaster killed nearly all of its inhabitants.
  • Cheng Qian rejected the blond young man’s doubts and led a thousand survivors onto the fog-surrounded highway outside Jiang City.

Ch. 49Human Nature and the Differences Between Roads

Fan Shang noticed Jiang Yu’s apparent hatred toward him but dismissed it, then heard Liu Tie’s plan to take the convoy onto a provincial road. Zhou Ping reacted with terror because the more crowded road could expose the convoy to more frequent attacks from weird entities.

  • Fan Shang saw a middle-aged man drag Jiang Yu into his vehicle, and briefly sensed malice and resentment when she looked at him.
  • Fan Shang heard other survivors say Jiang Yu glared at everyone and stopped wondering whether she specifically resented him.
  • Fan Shang asked Liu Tie where the convoy would go next.
  • Liu Tie announced that he planned to take the convoy onto a provincial road.
  • Zhou Ping was alarmed because more people on the provincial road could make the convoy easier for weird entities to detect.

Ch. 50Liu Tie: There's no better opportunity than this!

Liu Tie argued that the convoy needed to risk traveling to the Provincial Highway to grow stronger as the world became more dangerous. Fan Shang agreed, and Zhou Ping and Lin Xue committed to going with them.

  • Liu Tie told Zhou Ping and Lin Xue that increasing encounters with Weirds showed the world was becoming more dangerous.
  • Liu Tie explained that the convoy needed to fight Weirds and obtain Yin Objects to advance their sequences, and that Fan Shang’s House Guard sequence made the Provincial Highway less dangerous than before.
  • Liu Tie asked Fan Shang whether he would support the plan, and Fan Shang agreed because the Provincial Highway offered chances to grow stronger.
  • Liu Tie asked Zhou Ping to join them, and Zhou Ping resigned himself to staying with the convoy rather than leaving alone.
  • Lin Xue declared that she would go with Fan Shang and Liu Tie.
