Background / History
Family and social standing
Qian Yu belongs to one of Cang City’s four rising great families, alongside the Song, Jiang, and Zhu families. Their influence is growing rapidly, though they remain less powerful than established families such as the Ye and Wu families. His family’s standing helps him and his friends obtain access to school records while searching for Ye Fan 7 15.
The graveyard incident
Qian Yu and his friends become interested in the occult after trying activities such as bungee jumping, rock climbing, and sky surfing. He suggests visiting a remote graveyard at midnight to see a singing female ghost in red. The excursion ends with Song Bohui possessed, earning Qian Yu the Song Family’s intense resentment 7.
After Jiang Hailin discovers that Ye Fan’s talismans work, Qian Yu delivers them to Song Bohui. The ghost apparently reacts to their use by attacking him, leaving him with strong ghostly energy. Although initially doubtful that the disgraced Ye Fan could be a genuine master, Qian Yu joins the search for him and offers ten million yuan to exorcise the ghost 7 8.
Ye Fan successfully seals the ghost, and Qian Yu transfers the remaining nine million yuan of the agreed fee. Jiang Hailin separately sends three million as a thank-you gift. Concerned about his own exposure, Qian Yu later learns that he has lost approximately six months of his lifespan. Ye Fan authorizes him to use Jiang Hailin’s restorative prescription, explaining that his body cannot tolerate a stronger formula and advising him to restrain his sex life during recovery 8 9 10.
Ye Fan’s courtship and the banquet gossip
On Medicinal Herb Street, Qian Yu identifies Bai Yunxi for Ye Fan and warns him about Bai’s powerful background. When Ye Fan announces his romantic interest, Qian Yu claims that Bai prefers people with wealth and ability. His examples include a fortune of tens of billions and the ability to fight ten thousand men—standards he invents on the spot, but which Ye Fan takes seriously 10.
At the Wu Family banquet, Qian Yu asks about rumors that Ye Fan has taken liberties with Bai Yunxi; Ye Fan insists that he merely wants to court him. Qian Yu subsequently witnesses Ye Fan propose sleeping with Bai as a treatment for his condition, leaving Zhou Jinzhi furious 15 16.
After getting drunk at another dinner party, Qian Yu publicly praises Ye Fan as a concealed master and repeats derogatory remarks about Liao Tingting. His words spread through Cang City’s wealthy circles, inflaming the controversy surrounding her relationship with Ye Zhize 17.
Wu Haoqiang’s rescue
Qian Yu visits Ye Fan after locating requested medicinal herbs and refuses reimbursement. While he is there, Tang Nuan arrives seeking help for the kidnapped Wu Haoqiang. With Ye Fan’s car out of fuel, Qian Yu drives them, following the directions of a magical paper figure made using Wu Haoqiang’s comic book 17 18.
He accompanies Ye Fan into the abandoned factory and witnesses him incapacitate the armed kidnappers with knockout smoke before dislocating their limbs. Qian Yu holds a Mind-Clearing Talisman during the operation, then returns it so Ye Fan can use its remaining power on Wu Haoqiang 19.
After buying additional food for the group at KFC, Qian Yu takes Wu Haoqiang home. He reluctantly repeats Ye Fan’s explanation that the kidnappers suffered food poisoning, despite worrying that the implausible account might make the Wu Family suspect him of involvement 20.
Continued association with Ye Fan
Seeing Ye Fan leave with Tang Yongjin and Zhou Jinzhi, Qian Yu recognizes how quickly his acquaintance has gained influence. He connects Ye Fan’s involvement to the Tang Group’s decision to partner with the Wu Family rather than the Liao Family 30.
Qian Yu later seeks more talismans and learns that Ye Fan has sold his existing stock to Realman Zhang of Dragon Tiger Mountain. Ye Fan promises to make him Peace Talismans when time permits. Qian Yu also suggests finding Xiao Chi’s contact information through his college, inadvertently enabling Ye Fan’s embarrassing attempt to obtain Bai Yunxi’s number 33.
Personality
Qian Yu is adventurous but deeply shaken when supernatural danger becomes real. His urgency in finding help for Song Bohui, willingness to pay the exorcism fee, and insistence on obtaining treatment for himself show both loyalty to his friends and anxiety about the consequences of the graveyard visit 7 8 10.
He is an avid gossip with little discretion, especially when drinking. His curiosity about Ye Fan’s courtship develops into public commentary that he cannot retract once sober 15 17.
Although he comes to respect Ye Fan’s abilities, Qian Yu remains sensitive to social propriety. He objects to Ye Fan hitting a woman, feels embarrassed by his overt pursuit of Bai Yunxi, and frequently reacts with disbelief to his extravagant claims 10 16. His growing respect nevertheless translates into practical assistance, including sourcing herbs, driving during the rescue, and following Ye Fan’s instructions 17 18 19 20.
