Background / History

Bai Yunxi grew up frail and sickly. His family sought help from doctors and occult practitioners, but received conflicting explanations for his condition. One practitioner identified his birth in a yin year, month, and hour as the source of a Heavenly Yin Constitution and advised concealing his true birth date to protect him from malicious practitioners 13 24.

An academic prodigy, he skipped grades throughout childhood and returned from abroad with a doctorate by eighteen. He also owned the Morning and Evening Group and held considerable standing among Capital City’s elite young heirs 10.

His childhood included encounters with ghosts that he initially understood as dreams. His grandfather obtained a Buddha Amulet intended to protect him for ten years; by the time Ye Fan visited him in Capital City, that protection was nearly exhausted 38.

At work, he is a perfectionist who demands practical, high-quality results. He sharply reprimands managers for infeasible proposals and habitually works overtime. Nevertheless, he defends the receptionist who follows company procedure in refusing Ye Fan entry, rather than punishing her to satisfy him 37 38.

His skepticism toward supernatural explanations coexists with an enthusiasm for the occult. Although he dismisses Ye Fan’s warnings as superstitious nonsense, he enjoys learning about unusual phenomena such as the heartbond gu 38 39.

Ye Fan gradually draws out a more tolerant and cheerful side of him.
