Background / History

Karasuma family survivor

Vermouth is Renya Karasuma's direct granddaughter and a distant blood relative of Lin Xinyi. Renya's pursuit of immortality turned the Karasuma Zaibatsu into The Organization, whose human experiments consumed members of the Karasuma family as test subjects. Vermouth's parents and siblings died in those experiments; she was the sole survivor of the direct line. 531 532

Lin Xinyi's parents were likewise selected as distant Karasuma relatives. With almost every other discoverable family member gone, Vermouth came to regard Lin as her last remaining kin and adopted him, raising him as both family and student. 530 532

Return to Tokyo

Vermouth first appears at Matsumoto Sayuri's wedding, where Caesar immediately reacts to her presence. Rather than retreat, she calmly approaches the aggressive dog and subdues him through an intimidating, unshaken aura. 220

She subsequently assumes the identity of Miss Chris, publicly presenting herself as Lin Xinyi's girlfriend while living in his apartment. Her stated assignment is to monitor and protect Lin because Gin suspects his loyalty to The Organization. 221 230 231 273

Lin's apparent memory loss troubles Vermouth. She tests his knowledge of his past, examines identifying scars and a birthmark, and later has his DNA secretly tested before accepting that he truly is the boy she raised. 239 240 530

Break with The Organization

Though initially guarded about her motives, Vermouth repeatedly prevents Lin from pursuing Kudo Shinichi and refuses to let Mouri Ran be used as bait. Her willingness to risk herself for Ran, and Lin's sacrifice during their underwater entrapment, expose the depth of her attachment and begin to shift their alliance. 229 258

After realizing that Conan is Kudo Shinichi, Vermouth intervenes when Gin catches him tampering with Gin's car. She eventually raises her weapon against “Gin” to save Conan—only to discover that Lin had been impersonating Gin as a test of her loyalty. 268 270
