Background / History
Family and childhood
The Lin Family’s connection to the Ji Family began with a friendship formed by Lin Shuyang’s great-grandfather. His grandfather maintained that relationship through courteous holiday visits and gifts. With the Ji Family’s backing, the Lins developed from a small real estate company into a major business enterprise; the Lin Group is later described as Capital City’s largest real estate company 18 104.
Lin Shuyang accompanied his father on yearly visits to Sucheng. At seven, he charmed Grandma Ji and openly announced that he wanted the handsome Ji Huaijin to replace his actual older brother. Grandma Ji arranged for him to spend every summer vacation with the family. He became Ji Huaijin’s constant shadow, playing beside him while he studied and even waiting outside the bathroom 18.
Early relationships
Since his teens, Lin Shuyang had exclusively dated women older than himself. During his sophomore year, he pursued a senior for three months and began planning to marry her after graduation. Before he could introduce her to his parents, she left him for another wealthy heir. She later discovered Lin Shuyang’s higher standing at a banquet and tried to return, but he refused 19.
The betrayal prompted him to test subsequent girlfriends by hiring someone to offer them five million to leave him. After repeated failures, he invented a poor-boy identity with a paralyzed father and an intellectually disabled brother. Maintaining the story meant pretending to search for work while actually spending his days gaming in Lin Yi’s office, sleeping in his father’s office, or accompanying his mother to mahjong gatherings 19.
Appearance
- Large, striking eyes — repeatedly compared to eyes in mascara advertisements and described as “Carslan eyes” 1 126.
- Expensive casual clothing — his clothes have no obvious labels, but their fabric and overall presentation reveal his wealth 1.
- Fashion-conscious — a longtime fashion enthusiast who nevertheless feels outclassed by Cheng Yue’s styling 46.
- Disguise wardrobe — wears inexpensive clothes bought through Pinduoduo when presenting himself to his girlfriend as poor 19.
Personality
Lin Shuyang is energetic, blunt, mischievous, and intensely curious about other people’s romances. He eagerly joins Cheng Yue’s attempt to catch a cheating boyfriend and repeatedly tries to uncover Ji Huaijin’s private life. His teasing often continues until Ji Huaijin threatens to involve Lin Yi or make him study 1 11 37 47.
Despite his privileged upbringing, he does not regard wealth as proof of superior character. His father taught him to enjoy his money without becoming arrogant and to recognize how hard ordinary people work for their livelihoods. He readily befriends Cheng Yue despite the difference in their circumstances 47.
In romance, he is affectionate but insecure. He insists that true love should be free of material considerations, yet his fear of abandonment leads him to deceive and test his partners. Ji Huaijin explicitly condemns his treatment of unsuspecting girlfriends as test subjects 18 19. After hurting Xue Baoyi, Lin Shuyang accepts responsibility and promises never to lie to her again 104.
