Background / History
Childhood and Unrequited Love
Tong Yu grew up with a weak martial soul and secretly loved an older childhood friend, later referred to as his senior female student. She treated him dismissively, while his peers looked down on him. Seeing her with a wealthy, handsome blond man drove him to attempt suicide by taking poison. Instead of ending his life, the poison strengthened his martial soul 12.
He cultivated intensely and sought her out again, but her rejection sent him into seclusion at Monster Academy. His attachment remained central to his pursuit of strength, even after their relationship had failed 12 21.
Revenge and House Arrest
After becoming a Titled Douluo, Tong Yu returned to find his mother disabled and bedridden. The woman he loved had arranged for her legs to be broken. He tortured the woman to death in front of her child, then surrendered, accepting responsibility and expecting execution 12 164.
En Ci saved his life amid public outrage. Tong Yu instead spent decades under house arrest at Monster Academy, stripped of his Battle Armor and freedom. He regarded himself as a murderer and waited for death rather than seeking rehabilitation 12.
A Chance to Leave Confinement
En Ci arranged for Tong Yu to travel secretly with the Divine Realm Empire’s delegation. Tong Yu initially saw this as escape rather than atonement. Long Yue challenged his guilt by emphasizing his mother’s suffering and offered to restore his reputation 12.
Long Yue later proposed shaping public opinion around Tong Yu’s revenge for his mother, including allegations against the victim regardless of their truth. Tong Yu objected to abusing influence and damaging her reputation; no completed rehabilitation is documented in the supplied chapters 21.
Appearance
Tong Yu has a burly, broad-backed build and a frightening, scale-covered face. He commonly conceals himself when traveling among the continent’s inhabitants 22 167 182.
- Mismatched eyes: One blue and one red, described as suggesting freezing cold and burning flame respectively 12.
- Multicolored scales: Cover his face; his arms are also scale-covered 22 182.
- Sharp fangs and an enormous mouth: Visible when he smiles or eats 12 21.
- Concealing clothing: Usually wears a black robe and mask; Long Yue also lends him sunglasses during their Longxing City outing 22 24.
Personality
Tong Yu is guilt-ridden and strongly attached to personal responsibility. He surrendered after taking revenge and dislikes attempts to deny what he did. Even when Long Yue offers a path back to public acceptance, he remains uncomfortable with manipulating the victim’s reputation 12 21.
His concern for others coexists with his participation in violence. During the Defense Clan attack, he asks Long Yue to spare the women and children, then regrets learning that some were intercepted. Later, he openly condemns Long Yue’s malice while acknowledging his own involvement 25 26 164.
Decades of confinement leave him socially uncomfortable and politically inexperienced. He prefers staying indoors, dislikes being stared at, and initially fails to consider that Spirit Hall would record the delegation’s appearances. He readily turns to Long Yue for practical advice despite being vastly older and stronger 17 22 34.
His old romantic attachment remains a sensitive subject. Long Yue’s teasing can provoke sudden anger, but Tong Yu struggles to let go of the woman even after recognizing her cruelty. The suggestion that the Sea God might resurrect her is enough to make him reconsider refusing an assessment 12 155 167 179.
Abilities & Skills
Five-Element Qilin
Tong Yu’s martial soul imbues his attacks with the power of the five elements. Its manifested light is gold, green, blue, red, and yellow 23 26.
- Five Elements Divine Fire: Burns away Yue Guan’s fragrance, removing its suppression of Long Yue’s soul power 22.
- Five-Element Grip and Five-Element Collision: Used to kill Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan 26.
- Five-colored energy attack: Forms a sphere in his palm and drives it into the sea, overwhelming the Demon Soul Great White Shark King 169.
Qilin Arm
His arm swells and sprouts scales before releasing concentrated five-element force 26.
- Forms a five-colored qilin projection at the point of impact 26.
- Shatters Niu Gao’s Plate-Armored Giant Rhinoceros true form in less than half a second and kills him with the same strike 26.
Spatial Control
Tong Yu can seal the surrounding space and relocate an opponent almost instantly 23.
- Prevents a Titled Douluo’s aura from leaking out during his confrontation with Yue Guan 23.
- Carries Yue Guan from Longxing City into the wilderness despite his resistance 23.
- Yue Guan mistakes these techniques for evidence of a spatial martial soul; Tong Yu’s actual martial soul is the Five-Element Qilin 23 26.
Spiritual Power and Soul-Power Manipulation
Tong Yu can perceive his surroundings without relying on sight and manipulate soul power outside his body 24 59.
- Observes the world with spiritual power while wearing a mask that covers his eyes 24.
- Uses Sound Transmission for private conversation 24 156.
- Detects concealed observers, including Yue Guan, Dugu Bo, and someone watching through the Sea Demon Ship’s window 22 57 165.
- Creates a giant hand of soul power to try to catch Long Yue at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 59.
Limit Douluo Strength
Tong Yu’s cultivation and nine red soul rings make him one of the delegation’s strongest assets 149.
- His aura immobilizes the Sea Demon Ship’s crew 166.
- Displaying his rings persuades a Sea God Island patrol captain to escort him rather than expel him 178.
- His strength remains exceptional without Battle Armor. The narration identifies Bo Saixi, the Sea God, and the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King as opponents capable of providing a serious fight 181.
- His assessment requires him to fight Bo Saixi without losing; learning that she is a Quasi-God-level Peerless Douluo shocks him 182.

- Three-Word Battle Armor — former possession: Confiscated after his crime. He remains without Battle Armor during the Sea God Island mission 25 181.
- Black robe and mask: Conceal his scales, distinctive eyes, and identity 22 24 164.
- Sunglasses — temporarily borrowed: Long Yue lends them to him in Longxing City, although their fashion makes his imperial origin conspicuous 22.
Relationships
- En Ci — Teacher and benefactor. Supported his cultivation, saved him from execution, and continued privately acknowledging him as a disciple after his crime 12 21.
- Long Yue — Youngest junior brother, traveling companion, and prospective advocate. Tong Yu protects him but increasingly challenges his justifications for killing 12 21 59 156 164.
- Mother — Raised him through hardship and waited to see him despite her severe injuries. Her suffering prompted his revenge 12.
- Unnamed senior female student — Older childhood friend and unrequited love. He killed her for crippling his mother, yet remains emotionally attached to her memory 12 21 179.
- Yue Guan — Hostile Spirit Hall elder. Tong Yu first subdues him, helps pressure him into attacking the Defense Clan, and later kills him 22 23 24 26.
- Blood-Weeping Douluo — Temporarily replaces him as guardian of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well during the Sea God Island mission 149.
- Bo Saixi — Sea God Island’s Great Enshrined and the opponent specified in his assessment 179 182.
