Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Innate soul power: rank 0.5 24 Retrospectively disclosed by Yu Xiaogang as his starting aptitude.
Rank 29 — Soul Grandmaster 23 24 Displays two yellow soul rings. He credits reaching this rank to his talent and knowledge despite his martial soul’s limitations; no intermediate breakthroughs are documented.

Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan with considerable expectations placed upon him. His martial soul mutation instead made him a laughingstock, and the clan abandoned him. He later experienced two failed romantic relationships and increasingly invested his hopes of recognition in martial soul theory 25.

He published the “Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul” at around twenty years old. By his first on-page appearance, he had spent fourteen years at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy. His friendship with the headmaster gave him access to incoming students’ records, which he used to identify unusual talents for testing his theories. None of his former disciples had successfully validated his framework, and he had dismissed them all 15 25 69.

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is recognizable by his short crew cut and stiff facial expression 16 22 68.

  • Aging face: Repeatedly described as aged, especially during his confrontations and captivity 22 40 69.
  • Affected scholarly bearing: Often clasps his hands behind his back while presenting himself as Grandmaster 22 36 69.
  • Injuries after sentencing: A Spirit Hall cardinal’s vines knock out more than half his teeth and leave his face swollen and bloodied 40.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang places exceptional importance on his title and scholarly reputation. He insists on being addressed as Grandmaster, responds readily to praise, and treats criticism of his theories as an affront to his identity. Failed disciples, in his view, lacked the talent to fulfill his expectations rather than exposing weaknesses in his teaching 15 16 69.

His response to contrary evidence is defensive. After Tang Yin and Tang Sanniang disprove his first-ring absorption limit, he briefly breaks down, then reframes the result as a minor flaw in only one of his ten theories. He remains determined to win universal recognition and make his birth clan regret rejecting him 25.

His pride gives way when his survival is threatened. Confronted by Qian Renxue, he asks to be spared, accepts stable work, and reveals his history with Bibi Dong. Internally, he continues blaming Bibi Dong for his hardships 70.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao manifests outside Yu Xiaogang’s body as a pale-purple, pig-like creature with apparent independent awareness. He understands speech and shows affection toward his master 24.

  • Physical form: More than one and a half meters long and nearly two hundred kilograms in weight; capable of a forceful charge 24.
  • Dragon potential: Tang Yin identifies the bump on his head as the beginning of a dragon horn, indicating potential that Yu Xiaogang has not awakened 24.
  • Shared harm: Damage and disorientation inflicted on Luo Sanpao also affect Yu Xiaogang 24.
  • Recall: Yu Xiaogang can return him to his body as purple light 24.
  • Combat limitation: During the duel with Tang Yin, being suspended and spun in midair prevents Luo Sanpao from bracing himself and inhaling for another attack 24.

First Soul Skill — Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao

Activated with the command “Fart like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao!”, this attack follows Luo Sanpao inhaling air and swelling his belly 24.

  • Produces a yellow dome covering several meters, accompanied by an overwhelming stench 24.
  • Yu Xiaogang wears a mask when using it 24.
  • Tang Yin bypasses the stench by holding his breath through the Mysterious Heaven Skill and reaches Yu Xiaogang at close range 24.

Second Soul Skill

Yu Xiaogang prepares his second soul skill during Luo Sanpao’s charge against Tang Yin, but the attack is interrupted. Its name and effect are not shown 24.

Martial Soul Research

Yu Xiaogang’s central ambition is to prove his Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul through gifted disciples. He claims the work has guided countless soul masters, but his own unsuccessful students and the public criticism at Nuoding Academy contradict that claimed record 15 22 23.

Documented claim or research interest Challenge or outcome
A first soul ring has a maximum absorption age of 423 years. Tang Yin argues that talent, physique, and soul-power control prevent a universal limit. Both siblings later reveal thousand-year first rings directly to Yu Xiaogang 11 25.
His guidance can transform Tang Sanniang’s supposedly inferior Blue Silver Grass. He makes this offer without realizing she has already absorbed her first ring 24 25.
A beast-martial-soul user might absorb a plant soul ring to verify his theory. While assessing Dai Mubai, he worries that the student’s temperament would make him unwilling to follow such an experiment 37.
His framework remains valid unless someone proves it wrong. After the first-ring limit is disproved, he insists that the other nine theories remain correct 25.

Knowledge of Spirit Hall Secrets

Yu Xiaogang possesses confidential knowledge connected to Spirit Hall and its Angel lineage 69 70.

  • Describes a place outside Spirit Hall’s jurisdiction containing several Titled Douluos 69.
  • Knows of Angel God Armor and a soul bone capable of disguising voice, appearance, martial soul, and soul power 69.
  • Recognizes Qian Renxue’s identity and parentage after she abandons her Xue Qinghe disguise 70.
  • Misjudges his interrogator’s motives, revealing these secrets to the very person whose disguise he is describing 69 70.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twenty-four-jade storage belt — A black belt inlaid with twenty-four milky-white jade pieces, each providing a separate storage compartment. Yu Xiaogang stakes it in his wager with Tang Yin and loses it; Tang Yin subsequently gives it to Tang Sanniang 23 24 26.
  • Sapphire-decorated short sword — An ornate weapon measuring one foot and two inches, with seven sapphires on its scabbard. Added as the wager’s second prize and likewise passed to Tang Sanniang 23 26.
  • Pope Token — Obtained from Bibi Dong and confiscated during his captivity. It comes into Qian Renxue’s possession 68.
  • Mask — Used to protect himself while Luo Sanpao releases his first soul skill 24.

Relationships

  • Yu Yuanzhen — His father, identified in Tang Hao’s angry reflections on Yu Xiaogang’s conduct 11.
  • Bibi Dong — Former romantic partner and source of his Pope Token. Yu Xiaogang believes she abandoned him for power and owes him assistance; he later exposes their past relationship under interrogation 39 40 68 70.
  • Liu Erlong — His cousin and a romantic connection whom Flender had tried to bring together with him 37.
  • Flender — Close friend who welcomes him into Shrek Academy, defends his reputation, and offers him a choice of disciples. Yu Xiaogang later attempts to plead for him and hopes to secure his release 36 37 40 69.
  • Nuoding Academy’s headmaster — Personal friend who supplies him with student records, including the Tang siblings’ Spirit Hall certificates 15 23.
  • Tang Hao — Initially respects his published theories, then turns against him after Tang Yin’s critique. Visits him anonymously and administers a painful but deliberately nonlethal whipping 11 15 16.
  • Tang Yin — Desired disciple whom Yu Xiaogang hopes will validate his theories. Defeats him in their wager and disproves his first-ring limit 23 24 25.
  • Tang Sanniang — Another intended disciple; rejects him and reveals her thousand-year first ring to reinforce her brother’s demonstration 22 25.
  • Xiao Wu — Openly mocks his local reputation and condemns his habit of blaming Luo Sanpao for his own failures 22 23 24.
  • Qian Renxue / Xue Qinghe — Captor who considers using him as leverage against Bibi Dong, extracts information from him, and orders his tongue removed 40 68 69 70.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Tang Hao’s Retaliation

Tang Yin’s criticism of the 423-year first-ring limit destroys Tang Hao’s confidence in Yu Xiaogang’s teaching. Tang Hao subsequently visits his faculty apartment in disguise. Yu Xiaogang rejects responsibility for his students’ failures, prompting Tang Hao to whip him while carefully avoiding fatal injury. The arriving academy staff misunderstand the scene and ridicule his explanation 11 15 16.

Failed Recruitment of the Tang Siblings

After obtaining the siblings’ certificates, Yu Xiaogang suspects both possess twin martial souls and regards them as his destined disciples. He waits at Nuoding Academy’s gates, approaches Tang Sanniang, and attempts to impress the children with his title. When parents warn them against him, he releases his rank-29 soul power to silence the crowd 22 23.

Unable to secure their agreement, he offers a wager: if Tang Yin loses, both siblings must become his disciples. Tang Yin wins without using his soul ring, neutralizing Luo Sanpao’s charge and placing a blade against Yu Xiaogang’s throat. Yu Xiaogang loses both treasures but continues trying to recruit them 23 24.

The siblings then reveal their thousand-year first rings. This directly contradicts his stated absorption limit and leaves him distraught, though he soon retreats into insisting that his remaining theories are still correct 25.

Refuge at Shrek Academy

With his reputation ruined and new disciples unavailable in Nuoding City, Yu Xiaogang seeks refuge with Flender. At Shrek, he evaluates Dai Mubai, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun as possible disciples. All three refuse, and Flender attempts to override their objections 36 37.

Before Yu Xiaogang chooses anyone, Suotuo City and Spirit Hall forces attack the academy. He offers no effective resistance and is bound alongside the students. Shrek Academy is destroyed, and its captured members are publicly marched through Suotuo City in shackles 37 39.

Captivity under Qian Renxue

During judgment, Yu Xiaogang’s soul power is sealed. His attempt to defend Flender is rejected, and he is assigned to the crown prince’s stables. Demanding access to Bibi Dong earns him a brutal beating from the presiding cardinal 40.

At the Crown Prince’s Palace, he tries to obtain release through his clan identity, then attempts to bargain with Spirit Hall secrets. Qian Renxue reveals her true identity, promises not to kill him if he obeys, and confirms his assignment as a groom. After he recounts his relationship with Bibi Dong, she orders Pufferfish to cut out his tongue 68 69 70.
