Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Finger-fed incarnation in Yuji Itadori 5 Nanako feeds Itadori a Sukuna finger. Sukuna subsequently acts through Itadori’s body, fights Jogo, and defeats Mahoraga; his exact finger count is not established in these passages 5 47.
Nineteen-finger incarnation with full vessel control 46 47 Kenjaku and Tachibana Mio enable Sukuna to imprison Itadori within his own body. Gojo confirms that Sukuna has consumed nineteen fingers, explaining his increased cursed energy.

Background

According to Kaneki’s account of a future conversation between Sukuna and Uraume, Sukuna’s mother suffered starvation while pregnant with twins. Sukuna absorbed his brother before birth, producing his unusual two-faced, four-armed body. His brother later reincarnated as Yuji Itadori’s grandfather, making Sukuna Itadori’s paternal great-uncle 28.

Sukuna’s original body survived as a Sokushinbutsu, an imperishable mummy preserved through special methods. Tengen identified its location as the Flying Spirit Mountain Pure Realm 24.

His original cause of death remains unconfirmed. Kaneki speculates that Sukuna’s cannibalism caused a prion disease; this is presented as a hypothesis, not an established explanation 28.

Appearance

Sukuna’s original body combines extra limbs and mouths that allow him to perform jujutsu without interrupting physical combat 11.

  • Four arms and two faces, attributed to absorbing his twin before birth 11 28.
  • A large mouth on his abdomen, allowing continuous incantations without straining his heart or lungs 11.
  • Facial markings while controlling Itadori; these begin fading when Itadori regains control in Shibuya 5.
  • Four eyes are described during his confrontation with Gojo in Itadori’s body 46.
  • Monk’s robes clothe his preserved original body when Kaneki retrieves it 25.

Personality

Sukuna is proud, vindictive, and particularly angered by disrespect from someone he considers weaker. Kaneki’s refusal to fear him provokes a promise to kill Kaneki immediately after Gojo. He also exploits Kaneki’s attachment to Itadori, taunting him that hiding Megumi forced Sukuna to take full control of Itadori instead 31 46.

His cruelty does not prevent disciplined analysis. Under a combined assault, he remains composed, recognizes Mahoraga’s adaptation to his slashes, and identifies Furnace as the appropriate counter. He also detects changes in Kaneki’s tactics and techniques, then attacks when Kaneki becomes vulnerable 47 48 50.

Sukuna withholds information that could help his opponents. After surviving soul-targeting Dismantle, he admits that the attack should threaten an incarnated sorcerer but conceals his uncertainty about why it failed 50.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Energy and Jujutsu Mastery

Kaneki’s notes describe Sukuna as possessing more than twice Yuta Okkotsu’s cursed energy, with control second only to Gojo’s Six Eyes 11.

  • Can master cursed-energy-related skills after seeing them once 11.
  • Has extensive knowledge of jujutsu and binding vows 11.
  • His original body’s four hands and two mouths allow continuous chanting during combat, maintaining output at 120% 11.
  • Itadori’s physical strength, combined with Sukuna’s reinforcement and healing, gives his current incarnation exceptional endurance 47 49.

Malevolent Shrine: Innate Technique

Kaneki’s records divide Sukuna’s technique into Dismantle, Cleave, and Open 11.

Component Function Applications / Limits
Dismantle Standard slashing attack 11. Splits Choso’s Piercing Blood along its length and breaks apart a slash fired by Mahoraga 46 47.
Cleave Adjusts to the target’s jujutsu and toughness to deliver a potentially fatal single strike 11. Its adaptive cutting power distinguishes it from the standard Dismantle 11.
Open / Furnace Produces high-output flames with explosive cursed energy 11 47. Normally has low speed and narrow range. Sukuna identifies it as capable of destroying Mahoraga before adaptation, though Furnace has additional restrictions 11 31 47.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

Malevolent Shrine is an open-barrier domain. A binding vow permitting free entry and exit increases its sure-hit range to a maximum radius of 200 meters 11.

  • Subjects living and nonliving targets with cursed energy to repeated slashes 11.
  • Attacks the exterior of closed domains, breaking their shells and forcing their users into cursed technique burnout 11 48.
  • Can imbue dust with Open’s explosive cursed energy and ignite the domain through a binding vow 11.
  • Sukuna shrinks it to basketball size to increase technique output during his clashes with Gojo 48 49.
  • Counters Kaneki’s tightly restricted Black Hole after Sukuna stops using Domain Amplification 50.
  • Can concentrate its sure-hit effect on selected enemies: Sukuna targets only Gojo and Kaneki while Kenjaku and Uraume are also inside 50.

Domain Amplification and Anti-Domain Techniques

Sukuna uses Domain Amplification in close combat against Gojo and Kaneki’s Limitless 47.

  • Can maintain Domain Amplification while his expanded domain carries his innate technique. The narration identifies him as the only demonstrated user of this combination at that point 48.
  • Knows Hollow Wicker Basket, which neutralizes a domain’s sure-hit effect 11 49.
  • Also uses Simple Domain, switching to it before expanding Malevolent Shrine against Kaneki’s domain 49.
  • His original four-armed body can maintain Hollow Wicker Basket throughout a fight, including during cursed technique burnout 11.

Reverse Cursed Technique and Recovery

Sukuna possesses exceptionally powerful Reverse Cursed Technique and can continue fighting without a heart 11.

  • Rapidly heals the broad injuries inflicted by Kaneki’s first controlled Black Hole 49.
  • Combines efficient healing with cursed-energy defenses to endure repeated Blue and Red attacks 49.
  • Lands Black Flash on Kaneki and recovers from cursed technique burnout first, allowing him to reopen Malevolent Shrine 50.

Incarnation and Vessel Control

An incarnated Sukuna has one opportunity to completely transform his vessel, removing physical injuries and restoring his bodily condition 11.

  • This transformation does not repair soul, brain, or other mental damage, and does not replenish cursed energy 11.
  • Itadori initially suppresses him, but Kenjaku and Tachibana Mio reverse their positions, leaving Itadori imprisoned within the body 10 46.
  • Sukuna confirms that Megumi’s body can withstand his power 32.
  • Kaneki fears that Sukuna could use Enchain to seize his body as well, but explicitly lacks concrete proof 32.

Techniques Recorded in Kaneki’s Foreseen Future

These abilities belong to the future described by Kaneki, not Sukuna’s documented incarnation in Itadori during the current battle 10 11 35 38.

  • Ten Shadows Technique: Acquired after taking Megumi’s body; Sukuna uses it to kill Megumi’s sister and sink Megumi’s soul 10.
  • Chimera Beast–Agito: Created by having Nue inherit Great Serpent, Tiger Funeral, and Round Deer’s techniques, including regeneration 35.
  • Unmanifested shikigami abilities: Uses their powers without fully summoning the shikigami 35.
  • Dharma Wheel adaptation: Bears damage himself while Mahoraga adapts, including adaptation to Gojo’s Blue 38.
  • World-Cutting Slash: Learned after possessing Megumi and used to cut Gojo in half 11.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

Vulnerability / Counter Documented Effect
Separation from his vessel Yuki’s soul-targeting method can teach Itadori to sever the boundary between Sukuna and his host. However, Kaneki’s soul-targeting Dismantle fails during the current battle for an unexplained reason associated with Tachibana Mio 11 50.
Angel’s Jacob’s Ladder Identified in Kaneki’s notes as capable of extinguishing techniques and directly striking the target’s soul 11.
Reinforced closed-domain barriers Reversing internal and external conditions buys time; Gojo’s basketball-sized domain withstands Malevolent Shrine’s exterior attacks for roughly three minutes 11 48.
Mahoraga’s adaptation Kaneki’s Mahoraga fully adapts to Sukuna’s slashes, forcing Sukuna to consider Furnace instead 47.
Cursed Speech Kaneki temporarily immobilizes Sukuna, enabling Gojo’s Purple, but suffers severe bodily backlash 50.

Equipment / Items

  • Sukuna’s Fingers — Consumed through Itadori to strengthen Sukuna’s incarnation; Gojo confirms nineteen inside him during the Tombs battle 5 47.
  • Sokushinbutsu — His preserved original body. Kaneki retrieves it, removes its head and one arm, and lets Rika consume the remainder for Okkotsu’s Copy. Kaneki eats the arm to acquire Sukuna’s technique 24 25.
    • The mummy could replace approximately one finger’s worth of cursed energy. Losing it therefore deprives Sukuna of a modest potential supplement rather than crippling his existing strength 25.

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — Vessel and paternal great-nephew. Itadori initially suppresses Sukuna; Kenjaku and Mio later enable Sukuna to gain complete control 10 28 46.
  • Sukuna’s twin brother / Itadori’s grandfather — Absorbed before birth; later reincarnated as Itadori’s grandfather, according to Kaneki 28.
  • Uraume — Devoted subordinate who kneels before Sukuna and supports him with Ice Formation against Mahoraga and Gojo 46 47 50.
  • Kenjaku — Ally responsible for helping turn Itadori’s body from Sukuna’s prison into Itadori’s prison 46.
  • Tachibana Mio — Essential collaborator in securing vessel control; also connected to the unexplained failure of Kaneki’s soul-separating attack 46 50.
  • Satoru Gojo — Principal opponent and the first person Sukuna promises to kill after gaining control of his vessel 46.
  • Ken Kaneki — Enemy targeted for his disrespect and interference with Sukuna’s vessel plans 31 46.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Intended replacement vessel. Kaneki keeps him away from Itadori to prevent possession 32 46.
  • Uro — Identifies Sukuna as her husband and attacks Kaneki after recognizing his use of Malevolent Shrine 43.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shibuya Incident

After Itadori is fed a finger, Sukuna fights Jogo and defeats Mahoraga. He brings the unconscious Megumi to Kaneki and Shoko, calling Kaneki “the brat who can see the future.” When Kaneki tells Itadori to wake up, Sukuna’s facial markings fade; he leaves Megumi behind and returns to the battlefield, prioritizing making Itadori suffer over attacking Kaneki 5 47.

Preparations for the Culling Game

Kaneki’s notebook warns that Sukuna will possess Megumi and kill Gojo in the foreseen future. These warnings lead the sorcerers to isolate Itadori and Megumi, train in soul attacks, and prepare counters to open-barrier domains 10 11 28 32.

Kaneki also retrieves Sukuna’s mummy, enabling himself and Okkotsu to acquire Sukuna’s technique. Sukuna remains hostile while confined within Itadori and promises to kill Kaneki second once he escapes suppression 25 31.

Battle at the Tombs of the Star Corridor

Sukuna enters the Emptiness Barrier with full control of Itadori, made possible by Kenjaku and Mio. He intercepts Gojo’s attack on Kenjaku and renews his threats against Gojo and Kaneki 46.

Gojo, Kaneki, and Mahoraga force him through successive barrier layers, but Uraume’s intervention reduces the pressure. Gojo confirms his nineteen-finger strength, and Sukuna clashes with Unlimited Void using Malevolent Shrine 47 48.

Sukuna survives two controlled Black Holes and Gojo’s Purple. Kaneki then attempts to separate him from Itadori with Dismantle, but the attack fails. Sukuna retaliates with Black Flash, restores his technique first, and opens Malevolent Shrine against Gojo and Kaneki. The documented battle ends with both opponents being repeatedly slashed; Sukuna has not been defeated 48 49 50.
