Background / History
Childhood and Manga Career
Kaneki is a transmigrator who retains knowledge of Jujutsu Kaisen and an unfinished sequel. He presents these memories to others as visions of the future, concealing how much he actually remembers from Kenjaku. His information includes an alien arrival sixty-eight years later, but his knowledge ends where his previous-life reading stopped 2 26.
He and Yuji Itadori were neighbors from childhood until Itadori moved to Jujutsu High. Kaneki loved novels and manga, dreamed of obtaining superpowers, and helped pay Itadori’s grandfather’s medical bills. He created Tokyo Ghoul using himself as the protagonist’s model; its online success left him with substantial money to fund his plans 1 2 33.
Shibuya Incident
Before Shibuya, Kaneki sends his parents to China and arranges a family travel voucher for Yuko Ozawa. He gives Megumi and Nobara presents and leaves duplicate copies of a crucial gift for Itadori at locations he expects to survive the incident 1.
After obtaining his sorcerer awakening from Kenjaku, he uses Communication Puppets to warn Nanami and Nobara about approaching threats. He rescues Megumi, acquires Ten Shadows, and joins the battle against Kenjaku because his enormous cursed energy makes hiding impractical. Kenjaku’s Curtain also prevents him from leaving Shibuya 3 5 7 9.
Kenjaku destroys Kaneki’s left arm and part of his torso with a concentrated cursed energy blast. Arata stabilizes him, but Shoko’s Reverse Cursed Technique cannot heal him. Kaneki eventually learns to regenerate himself and credits Arata with keeping him alive long enough to do so 8 9 11 12.
Preparing Against Kenjaku
Kaneki gathers allies around Tengen and prioritizes keeping Yuki and Okkotsu alive over defending Tengen. His initial plan uses an untamed Mahoraga as a dangerous contingency, but he revises it when Choso points out that Uraume may accompany Kenjaku 14 15.
During the ensuing battles, he acquires Projection Sorcery, lands Black Flash on Kenjaku, and helps force a retreat. He then obtains Tengen’s Immortality, retrieves Sukuna’s Sokushinbutsu, and uses Equivalence to remove the limitation on Maki’s Heavenly Restriction without requiring Mai’s death 22 23 25.
He acquires Limitless at the Gojo Clan estate, protects acting clan head Gojo Yūkurō, and tames Mahoraga. He subsequently infiltrates Jujutsu Headquarters, kills the higher-ups, and spares Gakuganji because he remains useful 30 31.
Culling Game and the Tombs of the Star Corridor
Kaneki sends much of the group to Malaysia for safety and uses the remaining preparation period for technique acquisition and soul-exchange training. He enters Sendai with Okkotsu and Hakari to find Angel, despite recognizing that Kenjaku has likely arranged a trap 37 38 39.
In Sendai, he acquires Angel’s technique and unseals Gojo. After a crow signals danger at the Tombs of the Star Corridor, he accelerates the fighting, kills Mulong with Mahoraga, and reaches Tsumiki’s consciousness through attacks on Uro 44 45.
Returning to the Tombs, he confronts Kenjaku and Sukuna, now controlling Itadori. He fights beside Gojo, deploying prepared adaptations, Cursed Speech, and controlled Black Holes. His attempt to cut the boundary between Sukuna’s and Itadori’s souls fails; the latest documented battle leaves both him and Gojo under Malevolent Shrine’s continuous slashes 46 48 50.
Appearance
Kaneki has refined, handsome features, white hair, and black-framed glasses that give him a scholarly appearance 1.
- Hair: Initially brushed back into a small ponytail; releasing it makes him resemble the protagonist of his own Tokyo Ghoul manga 1.
- Clothing: Introduced wearing a black shirt 1.
- Kakugan-like eyes: While consuming Megumi’s flesh, the whites of his eyes darken and his pupils become red, resembling the Kakugan he drew in his manga 5.
- Finger-cracking habit: Kenjaku remarks on the similarity between Kaneki’s finger cracking and his manga counterpart’s behavior 46.
Personality
Kaneki’s stated goal is simply “to live without a care.” His pursuit of power serves both that desire and his efforts to keep those around him alive. He remains attentive to practical needs, arranging evacuations, funding operations, and personally buying food to reduce the risk of Kenjaku poisoning it 13 33 34 37.
He is calculating and willing to use incomplete truths. Against Kenjaku, he discloses enough accurate information to remain credible while withholding important details. He also revises plans when challenged and admits mistakes, including overlooking Uraume and overestimating Kenjaku’s ability to repair technique burnout 2 14 24.
His determination does not eliminate his disgust at eating human remains. Repeated consumption causes nightmares, retching, and difficulty eating ordinary food. He breaks his own fingers to suppress the gagging and continues despite the pain, relying on regeneration to repair his hand 33 34 36.
He can be ruthless toward perceived threats: he attacks Tachibana Mio despite her surrender and kills the Jujutsu Headquarters higher-ups. At the same time, he repeatedly protects allies and accepts their emotional support, particularly Nobara’s help with his nausea 23 31 34 36.
Abilities & Skills
Brain Devouring
Kaneki’s innate technique acquires other sorcerers’ cursed techniques through consumption 3 25.
- Brain consumption: Grants permanent acquisition. Different techniques impose different cooldowns, but the number acquired this way is not limited 3.
- Tissue consumption: Grants temporary access; eating more tissue extends the duration 5.
- Engraving: Repeated use can engrave a temporarily acquired technique directly into his brain 3 38.
- Storage strategy: Keeps Brain Devouring, Ten Shadows, and Star Rage directly engraved while using his innate technique to store other acquisitions 3 38.
- Control assistance: Can supply the control needed to operate an acquired technique, including Limitless without Six Eyes 24 30.
- Switching vulnerability: Switching techniques takes about one second after acquiring Limitless-level precision. Opponents deliberately attack during that opening 31 40.
Cursed Energy and Close Combat
Kaneki combines enormous reserves with years of preparation and rapidly improving control 6 7 17.
- His total cursed energy rivals Okkotsu’s, making him difficult to conceal from Kenjaku 7.
- Trained for more than a decade in Muay Thai, Sanda, and conventional weapons 6.
- Possesses medical knowledge concerning the brain and rehearsed cursed energy applications mentally tens of thousands of times before awakening 6.
- Uses Projection Sorcery’s twenty-four-frame movement and has landed Black Flash during its final frame 23 45.
- Remains substantially below Sukuna in direct combat; Sukuna temporarily disables him with a single reinforced punch 47 48.
Ten Shadows Technique
Ten Shadows provides shikigami, battlefield support, and shadow-based movement and storage 31 35.
- Offense: Divine Dogs’ claws, Nue’s lightning, and Max Elephant’s water provide attacks at different ranges 35.
- Healing: Round Deer heals allies and regenerates severed limbs, including those of Ui Ui and Hana Kurusu 36 44.
- Support: Rabbit Escape and tongue-bearing shikigami distract or restrain opponents 17 21 45.
- Storage and concealment: Stores supplies in his shadow and travels through shadows to infiltrate Headquarters 31.
- Limit: Shadows contain no oxygen; he must emerge to breathe, and Reverse Cursed Technique cannot remove that environmental limitation 19.
Mahoraga
Kaneki initially treats Mahoraga as a last-resort ritual hazard, then gains reliable control after taming it alone 14 30.
- Adapts to phenomena it survives; an overwhelming attack can kill it before adaptation develops 14.
- Prepared against Dismantle through training with Okkotsu 34.
- Prepared against Star Rage before the Black Hole operation 48.
- Removes Nishimura’s nail from Kaneki’s shadow and kills Mulong with the Sword of Extermination 41 44.
- Helps divide the battlefield and blocks Sukuna’s view while Kaneki prepares an Underworld Bead 47 48.
Star Rage and Black Hole
Star Rage adds virtual mass to the user and a cursed-tool shikigami, greatly increasing impact without proportionately increasing durability 13.
- Exorcises Elephant God with a kick and breaks through Uraume’s ice 17 22.
- Cannot freely apply virtual mass to ordinary surrounding objects 13.
- Kaneki’s Underworld Beads provide durable shikigami vessels for concentrating mass 35.
- Uses a bead to create a controlled Black Hole against Sukuna, requiring Gojo’s protection while preparing it 48 50.
Limitless
Kaneki permanently acquires Limitless through Brain Devouring rather than inheriting it naturally 30.
- Inviolability: Stops approaching attacks, including Mahoraga’s sword and the Eight-Headed Arrow 30 41.
- Blue: Uses attraction for rapid movement and to arrest his own knockback 39 47.
- Limit: Possessing the required precision does not make him Gojo’s equal. His Inviolability is weaker, and his Limitless offense is less effective than his Star Rage and Malevolent Shrine attacks 39 47.
Regeneration and Immortality
Kaneki possesses self-healing through Reverse Cursed Technique and a separate regenerative ability acquired from Tengen 11 25.
- Regrows the body parts destroyed by Kenjaku 11.
- Immortality regenerates his severed arm independently of Reverse Cursed Technique and lets him survive removal of his heart 25.
- Prevents disease from killing him, addressing the danger he associates with consuming human remains 28.
- Does not prevent visible injury: Sukuna’s domain still leaves him covered in cuts and blood 50.
Acquired Support and Soul Techniques
Kaneki supplements his principal techniques with abilities gathered from allies and enemies 36 44.
- Boogie Woogie: Swaps combatants and shikigami to coordinate attacks and rescue allies; uses an established binding vow to extend its range 41 44.
- Cursed Speech: Immobilizes Sukuna and Uraume to create an opening for Gojo’s Purple 50.
- Angel’s technique: Extinguishes cursed techniques and enables Gojo’s release from the Prison Realm 44.
- Equivalence: Exchanges Maki’s potential to develop a cursed technique for a fully realized Heavenly Restriction, with Mai accepting the contract 25.
- Soul Dismantle: Targets the separation between an incarnated sorcerer and the vessel’s soul. Helps reach Tsumiki, but fails to separate Sukuna from Itadori in the later battle 44 45 50.
- Barrier techniques: Learns from Tengen and later prepares to use New Shadow Style: Simple Domain defensively 35 44.
