Background / History
Xi Yan’s consolidation of power
The Interstellar Human Military Junta was nominally a military dictatorship, but the young Marshal initially lacked effective control. Five regent generals held actual authority, and military orders had to pass through them before reaching their recipients 2 5.
Xi Yan broke this arrangement by crushing the Shoigu-Gerasimov military clique. He ordered Prigozhin to investigate the remaining rebels and confiscate their property, then instructed Beta to design a Cabinet and governing institutions that would remain functional even without him. Supreme decision-making authority and the right to intervene in any matter remained his 24.
Despite possessing a Ring World and an Ancient Intelligent AI, the state suffered from neglected research and shortages of food, minerals, and other resources. Xi Yan redirected development toward scientific research, public ownership, and expansion 24 30.
Expansion and regional ascendancy
The Empire’s early expansion treated less-developed civilizations as resources for humanity’s rise. Its first-colony log explicitly described crushing the Plant People’s civilization and making it a foundation for human prosperity 53.
After defeating the M'tok Union, the Empire accepted the surrender of its remaining fleet and the allegiance of its colonies. A ceremony six months later formally ended M'tok sovereignty. Xi Yan abolished its governing institutions, dispersed senior officials among the colonies, and divided agreed portions of its territory with the Zirick Cooperative and Nier Guardians 228.
The M'tok Sector was declared fully incorporated after unrest in the Faus System was suppressed. Subsequent development expanded the Empire’s colonies and turned Cybrex Alpha into a major scientific center 257 269.
Imperial transformation
By the Great Awakening, the Empire had annexed the Human Federation and Minamar Specialized Industries and controlled one-seventh of the Milky Way. Psionic ascension transformed its entire human population and elevated Xi Yan from Grand Marshal to Most Holy Emperor 421 423.
The Heavenly People Holy Guardian Empire later accepted Xi Yan’s leadership. Its preserved technologies accelerated imperial construction, while nanotech ascension and the Synaptic Lathe pushed development beyond the technological knowledge inherited from the previous era 455 456 457.
Government & Society
Central authority
- Supreme ruler: Xi Yan decides major affairs and delegates implementation to trusted leaders; no independent institution outranks him 24 243.
- Administrative planning: Colony districts, buildings, jobs, and development programs are arranged to serve the state’s overall strategy 421.
- Early discipline: Officials were threatened with collective punishment extending to relatives and colleagues, encouraging mutual supervision 38.
- Secret police: Ashes Agents infiltrated every aspect of imperial society. Their presence helped prevent alien bribery from creating independent networks of influence 150 154.
- Post-ascension surveillance: Citizens’ words and actions remained subject to strict monitoring by the coercive apparatus 421.
- Agent recruitment: Ashes candidates underwent code and psionic screening, loyalty education, and Thought Imprinting 469.
Citizenship and ideology
- State provision: Ordinary citizens receive education, protection, and employment under centralized administration 29 243.
- Human-centered nationalism: Public faith in Xi Yan and intense pride in military victory provide exceptional internal cohesion 228.
- Xenophobia: The Bloodline Sanctuary advocated violently expelling aliens considered threats to public safety; its manifesto received a favorable public response 150.
- Unequal treatment of outsiders: Xi Yan’s allies admired his care for imperial citizens but feared his fixation on racial purity and his treatment of alien colonies 243.
- Synthetic citizens: Manufactured robots received personality matrices and loyalty to the Empire and Marshal in their cognitive cores 315.
- Family abolition: After ascension was completed, the concept of family was abolished, leaving individuals without familial vulnerabilities 469.
- Psionic faith: Following the Great Awakening, citizens placed their faith in themselves rather than the Shroud 423.
Economy & Production
Public ownership
Xi Yan replaced the private economy with centralized public ownership, using comprehensive resource statistics to organize production and distribution 24 29 38.
- Money and wages: The reform abolished the existing monetary system and assigned citizens jobs without ordinary pay 29.
- Basic necessities: Food, housing, consumer goods, and employment were allocated free of charge 29.
- Labor Points: Additional output earned points that could be exchanged for better goods 29.
- Automated logistics: Data centers calculated factories’ raw-material needs and contacted the Logistics System to arrange delivery 121.
- Research priority: The Academy of Sciences received priority access to imperial resources 102.
Production changes
| Period | Economic Conditions |
|---|---|
| Early public-ownership reforms | Monthly energy production approached triple digits, but consumer goods and minerals remained in single digits; alloys barely exceeded ten units, and food ran a net deficit 38. |
| War against the XT-489 Extermination Unit | Almost all alloys went into fleet construction and energy credits into upkeep; consumer goods supported continued labor, while food could be sold or exchanged 198. |
| Cruiser-era mobilization | Xi Yan could direct 90% of resource income toward military development; droid labor increasingly replaced humans in basic production 309. |
| Nanotech economy | Nanites replaced minerals, alloys, food, and consumer goods. Energy credits and nanites became the only required physical resources 457. |
- Nanomachines Ideal Cities: Colonies were reconstructed as nanite machine worlds that also functioned as ecumenopolises 457.
- Population manufacture: Three specialized worlds assembled conscious populations for placement in the Synaptic Lathe 457.
- Reduced territorial dependence: The ability to transform barren worlds into Nanomachines Ideal Cities removed much of the Empire’s need for further territory 465.
Technology & Capabilities
Scientific Research
- Parallel development: Unlike the game’s research limits, sufficient scientists could investigate many technologies simultaneously 24.
- Foreign acquisition: A Human Federation agreement supplied practical technologies for 300 energy credits per month 100.
- Synaptic Lathe: Extracted knowledge from brains, generated Omega Theory, and eventually researched technologies absent from the Time Worm’s memories 443 457.
- Human innovation: Xi Yan retained conventional researchers because imagination remained valuable beyond the Lathe’s computational output 473.
Composite Ascension
- Psionics: Every human gained Medium traits and could wield psionic power; telepathy largely replaced speech 423.
- Distributed consciousness: Citizens’ consciousnesses existed simultaneously in psionics and virtual servers 457.
- Remote embodiment: Those consciousnesses controlled living-metal bodies composed of nanites 457.
- Self-maintenance: Nanites repaired bodies and maintained servers, while psionic power stabilized consciousness in a self-sufficient cycle 457.
Nanite Warfare
- Rapid fleet assembly: Nanites could directly form warships, including Whisper Escorts, without conventional shipbuilding materials or ammunition replenishment 457.
- Assimilation: Nanite storms converted planets, organic inhabitants, aliens, and robots 525.
- Improved Energy Arc: Derived from Dessanu mothership technology; it was no longer restricted to Titan-sized weapon slots and could partially bypass shield and armor hardening 475.
- Body Battleship attacks: Any part of its nanite matter could release Energy Arc strikes; nanite storms could corrode and assimilate enemy hulls 475.
Subspace Navigation
- Miracle Sphere: Its beams safely guided ships through subspace, bypassing hyperlanes and defensive lines 473.
- Secrecy: Xi Yan announced the megastructure publicly but withheld its navigation capability from the Sea of Stars Community 473.
