Background / History

Before the story’s academy events, Zhao Wuji had fought more than a dozen Spirit Hall experts of his own level and escaped unscathed. The Nether Grand Duke later recognizes this escape as evidence of his combat ability 126 136.

Tai Tan was another longstanding enemy who had hunted Zhao Wuji. After Qin Xiao killed Tai Tan, Zhao Wuji thanked him and pledged to repay the favor even at the risk of his life 66.

At Shrek Academy, Zhao Wuji served as vice dean and supervised the final entrance assessment. Dai Mubai initially described him as the academy’s second-strongest staff member, behind Flender 4 5.

Appearance

• Ordinary form: A short, exceptionally sturdy man with ordinary features, appearing to be in his fifties. His presence exudes pressure even before he activates his martial soul 4.
• Martial Soul Possession: His muscles nearly double in size, and his height increases by about a meter 5.
• Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms into an earthen-yellow Great Strength Vajra Bear over three meters tall 121.
• Soul rings as a Soul Douluo: Yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, black. His eighth ring carries a faint evil aura 126.

Personality

Zhao Wuji is hot-tempered, blunt, and intolerant of disrespect. He beats Ye Zhiqiu for bullying Shrek’s students and questioning Qin Xiao, loudly objects to Prince Xue Xing’s interference, and nearly attacks Dai Mubai after the latter insults the academy 19 50 97.

His teaching is authoritarian. After Qin Xiao defeats him during the entrance assessment, he orders the other applicants to take another test because they stood aside without contributing. He explicitly demands obedience rather than questions, and later students describe his temper and dislike of interruptions during training 6 90.

He enjoys boasting and teasing Flender. Even his humiliating defeat by Qin Xiao becomes, in his retelling, proof that he fought a Titled Douluo and survived. After reaching Soul Douluo, he delights in reminding Flender that his old friend can no longer beat him 8 16 127 152.

Despite his bluster, Zhao Wuji repeatedly risks himself for others. He refuses to abandon Flender before Yu Luomian, holds off ambushers while badly wounded so Zhu Zhuqing and Meng Yiran can escape, and breaks through enemy formations to shield Liu Erlong 122 127 187. He also knows when to retreat: faced with the danger of Qin Xiao’s battle against the Tang brothers, he prioritizes survival over the academy’s property 40.

Great Strength Vajra Bear

His beast martial soul gives him a powerful physique suited to close combat 5.

• Physical strength: Captures a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent by its tail and repeatedly slams it against the ground until it is nearly unconscious 20.
• Speed: Despite his bulky appearance, moves quickly enough to seize the serpent before it can evade him 20.
• Martial Soul Avatar — seventh soul skill: Assumes a giant bear form, used to battle Thousand Jun Ants and overpower the Nether Grand Duke 121 136.

Great Strength Vajra Palm

His second soul skill transforms his hands into enormous bear paws for heavy strikes 136.

• Knocks the Nether Grand Duke back more than a dozen steps after locating his true body 136.
• Sends the Fire Leopard Sect’s sect master and another Soul Douluo flying during the palace battle 187.
• Smashes a Hellhound to pieces after drawing it into striking range 209.

Gravity Manipulation

Zhao Wuji uses gravity both to control opponents and to distinguish real bodies from soul-power constructs.

• Gravity Enhancement — third soul skill: Increases gravity around him. Against Nether Hundred Shadows, he identifies the Nether Grand Duke because the real body responds to gravity while the soul-power afterimages do not 136.
• Gravity Compression — fifth soul skill: Pulls the mustached ambusher backward, preventing him from immediately pursuing Zhu Zhuqing and Meng Yiran. The technique is interrupted when vines wrench Zhao Wuji’s arm off course 122.
• Gravity Squeeze: The fifth-ring technique is also rendered under this name when he forces a Hellhound toward himself 209.

Position Tracking

• Enables him to pursue the Nether Grand Duke when the duke attempts to leave their battle 136.

Evil God’s Protection

His eighth soul skill comes from the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s approximately sixty-thousand-year ring. It forms a pale black barrier containing a trace of the Evil God’s power 126.

• Defense: Qin Xiao judges that, at rank eighty-two, Zhao Wuji can withstand a couple of attacks from a Titled Douluo; an ordinary Titled Douluo cannot immediately break the barrier 126.
• Endurance: Unlike brief invulnerability techniques, it can remain active for a long time if unbroken and supplied with enough soul power 126.
• Against Soul Douluos: The rank eighty-five Nether Grand Duke exhausts himself attacking it without breaking through 136.
• Against Tang Hao: With Thunder Academy’s support Soul Masters enhancing him, Zhao Wuji withstands a Clear Sky Hammer strike without even swaying 184.

• Qin Xiao — Initially his entrance-examination opponent, later his benefactor and trusted leader. Zhao Wuji’s fear develops into sincere admiration; Qin Xiao avenges his grievance with Tai Tan, heals him, helps obtain his eighth ring, and grants him godhood 5 6 24 66 125 126 270.
• Flender — Dean, old friend, and frequent target of his teasing. Both men instinctively protect one another when danger arises, even while competing and exchanging insults 8 127 152.
• Zhu Zhuqing — Student under his protection. He guards her during soul-ring absorption, risks his life to help her escape Dai Mubai’s ambush, and later defeats her father under Qin Xiao’s orders 120 122 135 136.
• Meng Yiran — Student and companion whom he protects alongside Zhu Zhuqing during the forest ambush 121 122.
